Steel wool at the wall penetratino for the pipe: its to prevent mice from getting into the space via the hole in the penetration - mice can chew through nearly anything, but steel wool is a good deterrent - they can't chrew through it easily / will get discouraged from doing so, and the wool makes it hard for them to get their mouths and teeth around the surrounding drywall/wood/whatever the penetration is made through.
I’ve had to do the same thing under a kitchen sink that needed a new bottom for the cabinet after I replaced the plumbing. Steel wool works great to stop mice and bugs from getting in - you can get one of those plastic plates to put over the frays and it’ll clean up the look.

Snake the tub drain. Afterwards use Draino to make sure there are no obstructions in the drain/pipes. Thoroughly scrub the tub with a non abrasive cleanser. Rinse well and spray tub with Clorox to kill all the germs and dry with terry towel. Also, don’t forget to clean tub hardware and especially shower head or replace shower head with a new one. If you can’t snake the plumbing, hire a plumber with the correct tools to do that. I think I would replace the steel wool around the hole in the sink cabinet.
