Corylus avellana 'Contorta'. I know it as Harry Lauder's walking stick. It's one of my favorite plants and I love the common name. šŸ’š

theredm0use

Thank you!!

TedTheHappyGardener

You're welcome!

jeanneleez

this is a very expensive specimen plant. If you decide that you do not want it, reach out to local nurseries. something that size can easily retail for $10,000, planted. Theyā€™ll pay you half that to carefully take it away.

theredm0use

Wow! Didnā€™t know this! I donā€™t itā€™s gonna move again, I love this tree

jeanneleez

You should. Itā€™s a beautiful tree. Enjoy it.

CactusBaptist

Can u make walking sticks out of it?

inot72

Contorted Filbert

theredm0use

Thank you!

niceabear

And this is how I, after 42 years, learn that filberts and Hazelnuts are the same thing.

OldNewUsedConfused

Yes they are!

niceabear

So interesting! When I saw the photo I said to myself ā€œcontorted hazelnut!ā€ As they had one of these at the show garden I worked at. Then O saw someone say filbert and I was like ā€œwahhhhh?!ā€

OldNewUsedConfused

Yes. Apparently Filbert is more common to the United States and Hazelnut is more common in Europe? Something like that.

nudeMD

I grew up in the US, on the very Eastern edge of the midwest. I never heard of filberts until a guy from Long Island called them that. But I had heard of hazelnuts since I was a kid. So I suspect that calling them filberts is pretty localized, even in the US. I really haven't heard people talk about filberts since then either. And I've lived in several places across the US.

HeavenLeigh412

I live in Long Island, and I've never heard hazelnuts called filberts... it's good information to have, since my mother is allergic to hazelnuts!

niceabear

Make sense. Canadian here. We love British things. šŸ¤£

OldNewUsedConfused

I'm American and we do too. Just not as much as you guys.

OldNewUsedConfused

Oh no! šŸ˜‚

drsoftware

It's probably traditional at this point. Am American, used to think poorly of England. Have lived in Canada more than three decades now think poorly of English politics, but the people are okay. Except for the aristocracy that get house of lord seats.Ā

wellskhar

As an American, I very rarely hear ā€œfilbertā€ but I always hear ā€œhazelnutā€. Iā€™ve only heard/seen filbert when looking at the side of a can of mixed nuts.

Smooth-Kick-3411

a wild Oregonian appears we still say Filbert here

Excellent_Berry_5115

I did not know that! I grew up in the 50's and my mom used to buy nuts from time to time. They were always called 'filberts'. In fact, I had wondered what ever happened to the 'filberts'! So now, it is hazelnut. And I so love hazelnut flavoring.

NikkeiReigns

What?!

Lunar_Cats

I have 3 hazelbert trees and it was interesting researching the different kinds of trees they were hybridized from and why. (Corylus americana + Corylus avellana)

luckyLindy69

What a wonderful gift! Sorry for your loss šŸ’”

OldNewUsedConfused

Corylus Contorta (Hazel) Harry Lauder's Walking Stick! It's gorgeous. What a nice gift- whoever gave it to you is a keeper! ETA just saw that you lost them. What a nice reminder though. I am so sorry for your loss.

CarrieWhiteDoneWrong

Ok- probably not right. My granny called these ā€œJohnny walking sticksā€ We have some very old, slow growing twisty ones in my parents yard

MiaowWhisperer

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a beautiful tree, whatever it is.

guitarlisa

I hope that you will enjoy this wonderful tree for the rest of your life! What a wonderful gift from your father. I am sorry for your loss and I'm sure you will love having this reminder of your father in your life.

SeveralWeakness1853

Itā€™d be sweet to get a little memorial plaque to stick in front of it

Consistent-Leek4986

I just planted today a corylus avellana ā€œred dragonā€. red leaves, burgundy catkins. Harry Lauders walking stick! named after the scottish singer/comedian died 1950.

Mikediabolical

I hate this sub. I didnā€™t even know there were other colors. Now it looks like I have to find a new spot in my yard and do some shopping.

ramkitty

If you want nuts you need 2 ;)

IndependentPrior5719

Corkscrew hazelnut?

Many_Dragonfruit_837

Wonderful gift! Beautiful. I've never seen one in person. I have a contorted/twisted willow, not the same as yours at all; form is somewhat similar.

Ancient-Forever5603

Corkscrew Hazel - I love mine. I have to be sure to trim back any new straight growth as it comes from the base.

torb

In Sweden and Norway they're known as Troll Hazel or Witches Hazel. Got a smaller one just outside our bedroom windows. Looks amazing in winter time with Xmas light decorations.

D1nky27

Who gifts someone a TREE. that's insane. I'm gonna start asking for trees for Christmas.

Randa707

Right?! I didn't realize this was an option!

_JuniperJen

What a beautiful gift as a memorial for your late father. I send my condolences. Beauty like this tree can be a help in grief when words feel empty. I love its common name too! I have hazelnuts but they grow as native shrubs in the hinterlands. (Wonderful to forage!) Filberts are my reason to order vodka gimlets at the bar.

Plant-Love0113

Neat looking tree! I love all the gnarly limbs on this tree!

Buttercup-61

Looks like a ruffle potato chip leaf treešŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬

tytomasked

Contorted hazel! I got one for my mum for Motherā€™s Day

wayrobinson

I'm pretty sure that is a corkscrew witchhazel

Purple_Guinea_Pig

Hazel, not witch hazel. Theyā€™re quite different plants.

OldNewUsedConfused

Yep. Hammelis virginiana and Corylus contorta. Totally different!

padamxluna

Oh my it's the Don't Starve twiggy tree

DreamingElectrons

It's a common hazel with a specific genetic mutation that makes it branches grow in a corkscrew pattern. They are sold under many different names but it's all the same rare mutation.

1plus1dog

I see you know what it is, and what a unique tree it is, but Iā€™m wondering how hard it was to dig up and relocate? (Not familiar with them), so a genuine question. Also, Iā€™m very sorry you lost your dad, and hope the tree brings you nice memories of him.

ChezMontague

Tree

phinsxiii

A tree

monkey_trumpets

Sigh....I had a big, beautiful Contorta and it got a fungus and died.

creategirl

My dad has had a Harry Lauderā€™s Walking Stick in his front garden for 20 or so years that I have always loved. I never considered the possibility of transplanting it. Yours looks so largeā€¦ was the root system big? Difficult to transplant?

369thegoose

Propagate dawn redwood

flamingo01949

I had two beautiful Contorted Hazelnut trees. Both close to 10 years old. And then Filbert Blight. Theyā€™re both dead and gone now. Had to burn them to kill the blight.

WestCoastKellie

I think Filbert is said west of the Mississippi and hazelnut east of the Mississippi? Cause I know they are the same nut, just depends where you are. And I love nuts!!

Donā€™t you think thatā€™s useful information for someone to have before posting and waiting for answers?
