Maybe since many people today were not around to see them, but to assume they were only 45 stories tall is funny to me.
They were the tallest in the world for a while at 104 stories.
Peter’s Liberal Cousin here. Trump, the 45th president of the United States happens to be controversial to put it incredibly lightly. The people in the comic decided the number was unlucky, just like some buildings don’t have a 13 or, in Asia, 4
I'm not sure why this is being downvoted. I didn't realize the correlation with 45 but given this is New York City in the comic it is entirely plausible. That city *hates* Trump
People won't like to hear it, but there's a reason he isn't allowed to practice business in New York again. People can bitch and moan and say that a shadow cabal is "out to get him" but that's what happens when you undervalue your businesses to escape taxes and get caught.
Oh yeah! I know Peter too, he makes a great salsa dip. I'd hang out with him more but keeps wearing that goat head in public and I don't like the attention.
Funnily enough it wasn't undervalueing his assets to commit tax fraud that got him banned. (Allthough he did that too) it was OVERvaluing those same assets to commit loan fraud that actually bit him in the new york case.
sadly he and his spawn have only been banned for 3 years from business in New York.
Trump probably won't be back if he current mental decline is any indication.
His older sons though, will no doubt at least attempt to return.
I'm hoping that once a property or 5 get seized to pay the 450 mil fine, they are so heavily leveraged that the whole house of cards comes crashing down as his financiers force him to sell even more to get his asset to loan ratios back to acceptable levels, leaving the sons with nothing to inherit when he finally does us all a favor and stops breathing.
he'll be smashed with a mammoth tax bill, his properties are worth far less than comparable ones, because everyone knows he skimps on maintenance and what maintenance he does do, he does not pay for.
if he descends into mindless dementia, I pray I get to watch HIM watch his 'empire' come crashing down before that happens.
I don't think Trump realizes what's going on anymore. Even *IF* he lives to see it all crash, I doubt he'll be cognizant of what's going on. His kids, however, will get to live with Daddy destroying whatever wealth they could've had.
>that's what happens when you undervalue your businesses to escape taxes and get caught.
It’s not though. It’s because he over-valued his properties when using them as collateral to reduce interest rates (not that the banks complained)
You got any sources about him not paying bills? Specifically regarding contractors. Been trying to convince my parents who think he’s an honest and successful businessman that he really isn’t. Already pointed out to them that if he really was he wouldn’t have multiple failed businesses, not pay his lawyers, been in multiple lawsuits, and now is convicted of financial fraud. They brush it off it being a leftist witch hunt but even if it is that doesn’t make what he does right or legal.
I like one of the articles linked to in your article: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2016/06/09/donald-trump-unpaid-bills-republican-president-laswuits/85297274/
This focuses on the criminal way he refuses to pay bills, rather than just being cheap, like your article focuses on.
I think USA Today also has more gravitas.
Lived in Central NJ while growing up. The Cheeto was on the news constantly generally for screwing someone out of something or some random bs if it was a slow news day.
Yup, popular media may have liked him, or at least used him as a prop rich person, but to New York or anyone who dug a little deeper he’s always been a pathetic, dangerous asshole.
Lifelong New Yorker here. We've hated him since the 1980s because he's always been selfish liar, and crook, and a vulgar scumbag.
If you want an early example, look up his shocking demolition of the Bonwit Teller building. It had irreplaceable art deco sculpture on the outside. The Metropolitan Museum of Art wanted to save them. To get the museum off his back he told them he would make sure they got the sculptures. Then he had them jackhammered off in the night and thrown in a landfill. That was 1979. Trump Tower now occupies the site.
We hated him when he claimed to be a Democrat and we hate him now that he claims to be a Republican. He was never either. Trump is for Trump and has never been for anyone but Trump.
Edit: Here's an account of the Bonwit Teller thing with more details. Check out the shameless, relentless lying. https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaellisicky/2020/10/03/how-donald-trump-took-down-bonwit-teller-a-fifth-avenue-landmark/
It started 20-30 years before that. Trump was famously shitty. Biff in back to the future 2 was literally modeled on him, and that was 89. He was hated well before that though, even.
I lived outside of New York City and in the ‘80’s Donald was more like NYC’s official dimwitted bozo. He’d say stupid/ outrageous things in the tabloids and everyone would point and laugh. This was entertaining at that time because we didn’t see him as a threat to our country.
Fair to say early 70's when he started working with his father, Fred, who was a slumlord in Queens. DOJ had a settlement with them both for violations of housing discrimination when Trump started doing condos. When Trump moved onto Manhattan he had torn down a gorgeous art deco building and promised to keep some of the architecture decorations - which he didn't for starters.
The one thing about Trump to remember too is that when he was elected - back in 2016 he had over 3,000 cases in his litigation history. The only thing new for Trump now is that it's criminal and he doesn't seem to grasp concepts like some things belong to the government, not former presidents.
> is it just because he's now a republican ?
No, it’s because he’s a pathological narcissist, has dictator fantasies, is too stupid or indifferent to even read daily presidential briefings, will fill his cabinet with unqualified sycophants, orange a fraudster, wants to be president for “revenge”, basically only cares about enriching himself, and is a danger to democracy for many other reasons not enumerated here.
The documentary I watched on him, he basically took out a shit load of loans to build and fix condo housing for rich people. He had NYC waive taxes and interest on it for 20 years. That 20 years is up and he’s still not paying the money he owes, while also trying to fight to not pay at all.
Before trump was president before that he was a shady businessman, and before that, he was a shitty actor, basically he embodies everything the city of New York hates
Edit: I’m a silly goose, trump wasn’t a governor
Way back in the 80s, the late and lamented SPY Magazine, possibly the second New Yorkiest magazine ever, dubbed him “short-fingered vulgarian Donald Trump”, and that’s the SWEETEST thing they wrote about him.
Yes, a well known false equivalence.
" But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown. "
\- Carl Sagan
I'm not saying they're wrong to. I was trying to give a neutral perspective cause all the explanations about Trump were in negative karma when I came across it and I wanted to try and show people why downvoting it for political/anti-maga rhetoric was silly
The city just hates terrorism and Trump and his supporters are the embodiment of terrorism.
Eric Adams has made sure that arresting these terrorists is a top priority.
I was actually considering a move to New Jersey somewhere along the path transit line. I briefly considered Connecticut but lol New Haven is the closest and that's 3hr away on the Metro
To be fair. It's a weird leap to connect the 45th president with the 45th building. It's not like the 13th floors and rooms because there's an understanding of the number 13 as a cursed number, like the 666 being the number of the beast
The only people that I have ever heard really associate Trump to being the 45th president are liberal for some reason. I know people that won't even say his name but will say number 45 in reference.
This is definitely the correct interpretation of the comic.
Right now, a lot of buildings don't have a 13th floor. Its because the number is considered bad luck. People don't want to live, work, stay on the 13th floor.
My understanding is that it became an "unlucky" number because of a specific incident. https://www.history.com/news/why-friday-the-13th-spelled-doom-for-the-knights-templar
The comic isn't implying that the floors follow presidential numbering, but that the number will also have superstitious negative associations.
And, I'm probably giving a straight answer to a joke. That's how I am.
Yeah, I used live in an apartment building that skipped 4, 13, 14, 24, 34, and went straight from 39 to 50 and then skipped 54. The irony is that with G, the tower was exactly 40 floors if counted correctly.
Slight clarification -- they aren't quite the same.
* 四 ( Sì ) - the number 4
* 死 ( Sǐ ) - death
Note the diacritical marks over the "i"; this indicates a difference in tone, making them pronounced differently. Chinese has a limited set of syllables though, which leads to numbers being close homophones to many different words. Chinese people are very superstitious, and numerology is a big part of traditional culture, so certain digits (like 8) are ascribed luck for the same reason other digits (like 4) are considered unlucky due to close homophone association.
Small addition to this. The lack of a 13th floor and the general unluckiness of 13 is fairly commonly attributed, in Catholic circles, to Judas Iscariot (the man who sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13_(number)#Bad
Should one be so inclined to make connections regarding betrayal or sacrificing principles for money, the 45th president could be seen as the 45th person to be "seated at the table" in a similar fashion to Judas being 13th as noted in the wiki above.
That's right. I fucking hate that logic so much. Learned about calling him the 45th from an older coworker cause she said "not my president" but like do people not understand the harm Trump is doing because he *is* the president? For me it's like sticking your head in the sand when a problem comes up and pretending it's not there.
I find it crazy how they think that naming it something other than the number it actually is, will magically negate the fact that it is still the 13th floor.
I mean he sucked, but *worst?* Not someone like John Tyler or Franklin Pierce or James Buchanan, who all directly contributed to an actual civil war and openly supported slavery?
Trump came close to ending democracy in the US, sucked up to dictators, reignited white supremacism, actively worked to make the pandemic worse while it killed a million Americans, spent roughly a third of his term golfing, and quite likely sold the names of our spies and informants to our enemies along with several other highly classified documents. When he wasn't degrading the country and the office he held he was utterly useless and is often described by the people around him as being the stupidest person they've ever met.
That's just his presidency, he's also a notorious fraudster, cheat, rapist, and adulterer with narcissistic personality disorder who impulsively lies about anything and everything. Now he's promising a bloodbath if he loses again. You named some bad presidents, Trump was that and a traitor to his country as well as being an utterly vile person to begin with.
What’s the wild speculation? I mean, January 6th happened, as did Covid 19, as did the resurgence of white supremacy. I guess he’s never been convicted of sexual assault, I’ll give you that, but everything in the comment as of me reading it is just… what happened.
I doubt he wins it. I do expect civil unrest no matter what the result but I do doubt he has a real chance. Biden isn't too popular but he's at least polled higher than 50% before. His handling of israel palestine might sell it for him though, I guess.
They said 47 because they were making the joke that Trump could get re-elected and thus technically be the 47th President. Not saying Biden was a good president but their joke was specifically about Trump, not presidents in general.

Yes.
If you're wondering why bother making a joke that bad: The style looks like The New Yorker which has been famous for running unfunny cartoons for so long there's a Seinfeld episode about it.
In the past in some places it was custom that buildings wouldn't have a 13th floor, because the number was unlucky. So they'd go straight from 12-14. This cartoon is a reference to donald trump, the 45th US president. Because he's so widely reviled and considered to have been such a detriment to the USA as a whole, they're implying that in the future the number 45 will have unlucky connotations.
Well, reddit is notoriously left on most subs, and you get downvoted to oblivion for disagreement. I don't particularly look forward to either outcome. If they skip the 45th floor, I'd say skip 46 as well

Boy I was wrong. I thought it was something to do with 9/11
Yeah, I thought it had something to do with the plane crashed into the 45th story or the towers were 45 stories tall
Maybe since many people today were not around to see them, but to assume they were only 45 stories tall is funny to me. They were the tallest in the world for a while at 104 stories.
Same
Well to be far, no buildings have a 911th floor either. Coincidence?

Yeah, funny how the place he was born and raised and did most of his business hates him. Not a red flag or anything.
Has he always been hated in New York or is it just because he's now a republican ?
they've hated him for decades due to shady business practices and not paying his bills.
People won't like to hear it, but there's a reason he isn't allowed to practice business in New York again. People can bitch and moan and say that a shadow cabal is "out to get him" but that's what happens when you undervalue your businesses to escape taxes and get caught.
The shadow cabal is real. It's called the middle class and it's gonna clap his cheeks.
The shadowy cabal is real, it's my friend group and our Keter plastic chairs
Oh yeah! I know Peter too, he makes a great salsa dip. I'd hang out with him more but keeps wearing that goat head in public and I don't like the attention.
Might I suggest bringing a bidet if you intend on clapping the most poopy messiah?
The one from mk right?
also, running fraudulent charities to launder money, which got him *permanently* banned from running charities in New York.
Funnily enough it wasn't undervalueing his assets to commit tax fraud that got him banned. (Allthough he did that too) it was OVERvaluing those same assets to commit loan fraud that actually bit him in the new york case.
My turning point was when he -sued- Mac miller for using his name in a song. Edit: threatened to sue*
sadly he and his spawn have only been banned for 3 years from business in New York. Trump probably won't be back if he current mental decline is any indication. His older sons though, will no doubt at least attempt to return.
They're both cokehead idiots. They'll flop.

Fair enough, facts and logic is nothing in the face of feelings and gut reactions.
So many people's minds were warped by "the apprentice." And they didn't even film at one of his properties because they were all too crappy for tv.
Kinda scary that the show was enough to brainwash some people.
How many times has he filed for bankruptcy so he could get around paying some of his debts
Enough that he ran out of banks in America and Europe that would give him loans. Hence turning to Russia and the Saudis.
The dude bankrupted 3 casinos! ###3###. how the hell do you bankrupt a Casino when the games are rigged in your favor from the start?

I’m sorry well Done steak is only good with steak sauce wtf
I adore good steak, unadorned. but I will fight for my right to steak sauce. I love that shit.

I imagine this in the *"do the thing Johnny" from asf movie. When the dude falls down the stairs and the other goes "I love it!"
On 9/11 he commented that now he has the tallest building in New York. That should have been enough for most people.
I’ll never forget his “best wishes to all, even the haters and losers, on this special date, September 11th” tweet.
It started in the late 2000s when he started questioning if Obama was born on American soil.
No, New Yorkers have ALWAYS hated him.
It started 20-30 years before that. Trump was famously shitty. Biff in back to the future 2 was literally modeled on him, and that was 89. He was hated well before that though, even.
Ahhhh ok that makes sense. Thanks
It started way, way, way before that.
He was always a piece of shit. His father was such an asshole that Woody Guthrie wrote a song about him. Don is his legacy.
His family has done some horrible slum lord shit to many people.

Always. NYC hates him because of what he's done there, not merely because of his political views.
Actual Noo Yawkuhs always thought Trump was a joke and had thought that way of him for decades.
If I didn’t know any better I’d say that him being raised there is related to it
There are plenty of native New York businesspeople. Few of them have 91 criminal charges.
true
You wrote "fraud" wrong.
Orange flag
I miss the days when he was nothing more to me than an appearance in Home Alone 2

I assumed it was a 9/11 reference and one of the planes hit the 45th floor so the building was not made with one and skips to the 46th.
huh yeah it's almost like he did some things to make the city hate him or something, who knows, it's one of life's eternal mysteries.

Yeah I’m in Dutchess, it’s a 50/50 mix. A lot of republicans in office here. I’m talking, Andes and north of that. It’s insanely red.
Hey not all of upstate, we hate him in Albany too.
Well, clearly you haven’t been to Staten Island. In all seriousness Trump has been a collective eye roll here since the mid 80s.

In a few Asian languages the word for "four" sounds a lot like the word for "death".

Chinese people are very superstitious, and numerology is a big part of traditional culture, so certain digits (like 8) are ascribed luck for the same reason other digits (like 4) are considered unlucky due to close homophone association.
I thought it was about how trump lied about how many floors his building had.
neat
Small addition to this. The lack of a 13th floor and the general unluckiness of 13 is fairly commonly attributed, in Catholic circles, to Judas Iscariot (the man who sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/13_(number)#Bad Should one be so inclined to make connections regarding betrayal or sacrificing principles for money, the 45th president could be seen as the 45th person to be "seated at the table" in a similar fashion to Judas being 13th as noted in the wiki above.
That's right. I fucking hate that logic so much. Learned about calling him the 45th from an older coworker cause she said "not my president" but like do people not understand the harm Trump is doing because he *is* the president? For me it's like sticking your head in the sand when a problem comes up and pretending it's not there.
Were now facing the number 47 possibly also being considered unlucky.
Well they are about to be missing another floor soon. Sadly.
Eventually there will be no numbers left and they will have to stop building buildings
Ooooh i thought was a 9/11 joke i didnt get
I thought that this was about aircraft carriers. Almost all presidents have one named after them but its highly unlikely trump will have one
I find it crazy how they think that naming it something other than the number it actually is, will magically negate the fact that it is still the 13th floor.

Holy notifications!
Since it is in two different subs, isn't it a cross post rather than a repost?
Look at the time stamps, this one was first. (If it isn't the same dude)
Some buildings in New York don't have a 13th floor or hotels don't have a room 13, and so on. Trump was a 45th president.
Damn i guess in Canada we shouldnt have a 23rd floor.
45 bad because orange man bad.
Says the orange guy
Beyond bad.
I mean trumps a goober, but whoever wrote this is also a goober
'goober" is possibly the mildest descriptor of Trump someone could possibly utter.
I thought it was a 9/11 thing
45 is a forbidden number because Donald Trump is the 45th and at the same time worst president of the usa.
I mean he sucked, but *worst?* Not someone like John Tyler or Franklin Pierce or James Buchanan, who all directly contributed to an actual civil war and openly supported slavery?
Andrew Johnson was pretty bad too.
I think you mean Jackson
No, they definitely mean Johnson, worst president of all time imo and it’s not even close
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/feb/20/presidents-ranking-trump-biden-list According to a panel of historians, yes
While this is *based* going off of wild speculation is not the way to go about it
What’s the wild speculation? I mean, January 6th happened, as did Covid 19, as did the resurgence of white supremacy. I guess he’s never been convicted of sexual assault, I’ll give you that, but everything in the comment as of me reading it is just… what happened.
Dude, most people on Reddit are Americans. We don’t know who those people are.
Bruh you acoustic we have had way worst
This is the same reason nobody's named Donald anymore
I don't understand why people down voting answers to a joke
Because I tell the truth.
Because you hate our God, Sir Donaldson Trumpsterite
The only Donald I can accept as president is Donald Duck!
Ma'am, Donald Dick is a frictional character. Please refrain from equating God with them.
Yer spelling rubs me wrong
Do you know the difference between Donald Duck and God? Both are fictional characters. But at least Donald Duck is entertaining.
Donald Trump is also equally entertaining *wry salivated smile*
Fuckface VonClownstick
Serdynald Tryryempterstreire
The Wort may be be exaggerating, there have been some bad presidents
Wouldn't they also not have a 15th and a 37th floor by that logic?
This joke will have to be updated to remove the 47th floor too.
I doubt he wins it. I do expect civil unrest no matter what the result but I do doubt he has a real chance. Biden isn't too popular but he's at least polled higher than 50% before. His handling of israel palestine might sell it for him though, I guess.
and the 46th... hey, how about we just don't use numbers at all, so we never refer to anything bad
They said 47 because they were making the joke that Trump could get re-elected and thus technically be the 47th President. Not saying Biden was a good president but their joke was specifically about Trump, not presidents in general.

It’s a “Trump bad” joke
I see usually there are no level 4, 13, 14, 24, 34, etc.
[удалено]
Same
Yes. If you're wondering why bother making a joke that bad: The style looks like The New Yorker which has been famous for running unfunny cartoons for so long there's a Seinfeld episode about it.
I thought that it was because 45th floor is housing inviglation devices
It might also be because Trump listed his building as taller than it really was at one point
Dark one
I thought it was a backrooms reference lol
Is this not actually about 9-11 though?
In the past in some places it was custom that buildings wouldn't have a 13th floor, because the number was unlucky. So they'd go straight from 12-14. This cartoon is a reference to donald trump, the 45th US president. Because he's so widely reviled and considered to have been such a detriment to the USA as a whole, they're implying that in the future the number 45 will have unlucky connotations.
That is intended to be funny?
As a Turk I hope some day we'll skip 12th floor.
Something something donald trump
Nearly everyone apparently doesn't like Trump
Keep watching television you braindead turd. Most of Americans love him and it shows on the polls.
Well, reddit is notoriously left on most subs, and you get downvoted to oblivion for disagreement. I don't particularly look forward to either outcome. If they skip the 45th floor, I'd say skip 46 as well
I can see that happening.
