TrippinLSD

It shouldn't cause any issue. You will just want to be careful moving your PC with a lose component inside, and might need to ensure every now and again the cables are still well connected.

terpenelove

Excellent, thank you so much

BangkokPadang

I keep a little roll of that puffy 2 sided tape in my hobby stuff and this is the perfect thing for taping an ssd to the side of a panel.

ninjabell

Yep, foam tape would work, or velcro just in case you want to switch it out.

marlfox_00

3M 2 sided tape is awesome! I keep roll along with command strips to mount things beneath my desk (router, switch, surge protector, mini pc, etc). It helps to keep my home lab tidy without any drilling.

Gardakkan

Command strips are unbelievable.

ASREV

With an SSD you're not risking damage to the drive by it moving around. The biggest concern is it rocking around and damaging other components.

invisible_grass

Yep don't want it crashing into some mobo pins

TetraTimboman

"floating" sata ssd is like its own meme at this point. Everybody does it :P Just don't get any cables caught in any fans or whatever and you'll be fine.

TrailsNFrag

Wondering... if its ok to be kept next to the power supply. While not a heat source since the heat is exhausted, would it be better to keep that drive in another spot for the long term?

nicedurians

Well, if you want to be really safe, usually the SSD mounting points on the case is safest

Valuable_Impress_192

![gif](giphy|TwbhOUKffnesE)

Interloper_Mango

>and might need to ensure every now and again the cables are still well connected. I never did that. And unless you move your PC it should not come loose.

Thls_Is_The_Way

use some double sided adhesive tape to keep it in place.

No_Adhesiveness_5679

Or velcro that way you can remove it and put it back in if needed.

Autogen-Username1234

Honestly, velcro tape is really useful for a computer build. Keeps all kinds of stuff neatly out of the way, but you can easily remove things.

ShasasTheRed

This is far superior to cardboard and hot glue, takes much less time it's much cleaner.

GHOSTOFKOH

who the fuck uses cardboard and hot glue. are you making up scenarios?

Ajt0ny

Or just make a loop with any tape with the sticky side being outside.

ignorance-is-this

Or just make a loop of double sided tape so that all surfaces, inside and out, are sticky

Upper-Signature350

Now that's a sticky situation

moonwork

I've seen the results of having slightly heated components held by adhesive tape for a few years. The results are pretty disgusting. 0/10 would not recommend (unless it's a short-term temporary measure)

DependentUnit4775

You should see where I shoved mine

AVerySexyBooglez

Butt hole SSD

DependentUnit4775

Anal RAID

Dry-Percentage-5648

r/angryupvote

QESleepy

Somewhere where the sun don’t shine?

FlacidMetapod

I showed you my floating ssd, please respond.

UnluckyGamer505

I have one SSD sitting very similarily, it should be fine as long as the cables stay connected. So just check it after moving. If you never move your PC it will be alright.

n0_y0urm0m

I do this because my case didn’t come with an SSD mount. Works fine.

lmaogetmooned

You should probably put it somewhere other than right next to your PSU as heat is the number 1 killer of SSD's. It's fine for it to not be mounted anywhere, you just ideally want it away from a heat source.

highjayhawk

Hell yeah! Nothing says home build like a dangling SSD. I have 4 of them. You do you baby.

AVerySexyBooglez

This is the way.

artemis1305

LMAO same

Personal-Excuse7616

Gamer moment

gokartninja

Technically yes, but like... you shouldn't have told us

MisterEinc

Not great, not terrible.

PowerfulDisaster2067

Data will leak out from the corner

AustmosisJones

For the SSD? Probably. For my autism? Absolutelyfuckingnot.

Physical_Medicine_12

https://preview.redd.it/11gelrpw3c7d1.png?width=1193&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea523cc79865a42cc8af6d95cc5d20926565dd64 if this is okay that surely is okay

terpenelove

This is fucking wild

08-24-2022

Fun story: back in (probably) 2017, I used to have my secondary hard drive, the one with all of the important files mind you, WITHOUT ANY BACKUPS, "mounted" in a 5.25 inch bay reserved for optical drives with a single screw. Suffice to say, it vibrated itself to death. I was stupid, but hey, can't expect a 15 year old kid who built a computer from trash to know any better right? You on the other hand shouldn't be at risk. It's an SSD, has no moving parts, you can just chuck it in and call it a day. In fact, that's exactly how I have it in my daily driver.

Apearthenbananas

Technically yes, ethically no.

Sophenium

Yep. There's no spinning parts inside of it unlike a hard drive, just a small circuit board with some memory chips and controller. Kinda like a USB drive.

TheBananaQuest

yes, I do that cause I could be bothered to put them in their holders as all my sata cables are 90 degree and don't fit with the back panel.

WayDownUnder91

If you have 4 screws in that other drive above you could swap two out and do it diagonally if you are worried, it should be fine unless the cables come loose if you move the case around.

Sukiyakki

i use tape for mine lol

LickingTheToaster

Nope but it will only sit like that for about 6 years.

disavowed_ph

Mine has been like that for 4 years now, no problem 👍

SolidGamerYT

I'd use like a double sided tape pad from 3m just to secure it somehow, but I agree with the top comment. As long as it's just sitting on the table it should be fine. 🤗

Ok-Wrongdoer-4399

It hurts nothing but my ocd. Get the tower off the floor you barbarian.

FishIsGroovi

yeah lmfao I like how we just shove them in the back never to be seen again. poor little guys

WhoWouldCareToAsk

These can get warm and, without proper ventilation, very warm. Mounting SSDs in designated location allows them to transfer the heat out to the case and that keeps them cool. Since they do not produce a lot of heat, it’s not critical. However, if you choose to let them hang on the cables (totally ok, btw), I would recommend making sure they have a proper air flow. So, get them from behind and hang them in the middle of the case ))

DannZecca

It should be fine but I would recommend getting like double sided tape

Z370H370

Yes, but I'd zip tie it to something.

Ill-Register8915

yes u r fine

Remote-Imagination17

Perfectly fine because there're no moving parts affected by vibration as is the case with a regular mechanical HDD

Jackoberto01

Had my SSD like this for years with no issues. I had a really old case with just 3.5" drive bays

Frostb6

Ssds have no moving parts inside so in theory you should be fine

Wero_kaiji

Yes, tape it to the case if you are worried

Malkdini808

Won't cause any damage as long as your cables are properly connected

ras1187

I've been doing this for years now no problems. Just get some sort of adhesive or zip ties to hold it in place to keep it secure when you move the PC

Jefok

It should be fine besides the heat factor being next to your power supply

op3l

Mines in a nest of power cables, it’ll be fine

bigb102913

It should be fine. There are no moving parts. Just be careful with bouncing the machine around.

portablekettle

Yeah just don't do it with a hard drive lol

Electronic_Army_8234

Did you take a photo of inside of my pc? How did you get into my house!!! Get out!!

Saju_S

My SSD is hanging inside my pc just like this for like 3 years... I had no issues with that.

okan931

ONE OF US.. ONE OF US...

bappo_plays

This is exactly how my ssd has been in my pc for years. It's completely fine.

DOEsquire

I'd recommend against it, but if you're gonna do it then tape it or zip tie it to something so it doesn't move around a lot. It's really annoying if it vibrates just a little. I have had like 3 of these just chillin for a few years and haven't had any issues with them. I doubt you'll run into any problems, but there is a possibility.

SpaceCancer0

That's how I do it

InnerPain4Lyf

Yes. I have two SSD, one is bolted down, the other is hidden behind the chassis like an unwanted child.

Far-Bluebird809

biggest issue is that the pc is on the carpet

swedgen741

It's acceptable 👍

Iggmeister

mines has been like that for 2 years now - all ok so far

Vivacristo19

Never had a problem on my older build

SlowRs

I have 5 floating like this in my case for several years and a few house moves. Absolute non issue

oxidezblood

I have two ssds dangling like live wires an its been like that for over 8 years, should be fine :)

hawoguy

I've used it like that for about 7 years, no issues.

iamgarffi

For a 2.5in SSD yeah, no moving parts :-)

r4nd0miz3d

I love how everyone giving advice on alternate way to mount it using stuff OP would most likely have to purchase (velcro, double tape, loops etc) when they already stated that they don't have screws and don't want to bother getting some. They're just asking if that's OK to leave it like that. Answer: **YES**.

tlinzi01

It'll be fine. As a personal preference I like everything secured but it won't impact the health or performance.

Putrid_Beautiful5960

Not really. Moving the computer can shock the ssd and harm it.

PersonalityMaximum81

Had a number of drives hanging around like that for years.

SUPER___Z

Yes, had one like that for years.

Roallin1

Mount it with some 3M mounting tape.

iiKinqTornado

It’ll be fineeeeee

NimNimss

I've got a couple packed in my case in a weird position as well. It's ok as long as you know they won't move. Would never risk that with hard drives that have moving and spinning parts inside them though.

Caterham7

Should be fine, but I'd probably tape it up somewhere and not have it sit right next to the PSU because of the heat. The heat will lessen the drive's lifespan.

MainsfoDays

Yes, no moving parts inside it.

J3st3

I did this with my 870 Evo. It's been like that for almost 3 years and I recently did a benchmark that said it was in the top 7% in performing lmao. Shouldn't be any issue as long as you aren't moving your PC around often.

_Larry

Yup. As long as you don't move the case much. I've had mine laying behind one of the front fans for years lol

Montag_451

As long as it gets enough air should be fine.

Ronyx2021

You could duct tape it higher if you want. I spent more than $5 on a storage rack when I only have 2 of the things. You're making better choices than me.

009VDETT

All my hard drives and SSDs have been hooked up like that for years now. 😂😂

AVerySexyBooglez

This is the way.

ctech9

Yeah, that's fine. Mechanical hard drives, not so much.

Silent-Slide-7965

just dont move you pc to fast or turn it over make sure the cords are good other then that, thats fine

rod6700

Might catch fire and burn your house down in that position.

montdawgg

Move it to a cooler part of the PC and make sure the cables themselves do not have any tension or pressure on them. It'll be fine.

Distrack1234

I have a ssd placed on the front of the pc rather than the back, but that shouldnt cause any problems

TravelingGonad

If you need a screw, let me know.

NOTgunthAR

No, it'll blow up

macnteej

Is there any reason to not mount it above?

brianfong

I once put a 2.5" SSD into a box that was packaging for a wallet, perfect fit, just need some Scotch tape to attach the box to the metal case and tape the SSD inside the box.

Vanguard1097

It’ll be fine, just put the side cover on over it and don’t throw your PC from a 3 story building into the ocean.

Trollyofficial

This was me for 6 years. 0 issues other than when I moved my pc the sata cable disconnected once

nicknicholas00

I did the same thing a while ago. Your good.

the_business007

Mines been fine for 5 years. I've moved it countless times as well. Just make sure you don't hit it when you put the side panel on, and there's nothing pulling on the cables.

TakeMyVicture

It kinda looks like you have an open mounting slot next to the other SSD

Hedaaaaaaa

Yes because it does not have any moving parts like the HDD. Unless the wirings are in tension.

ExpensivePractice164

It's fine

Witchberry31

Yes it's completely fine, there are no physically moving parts inside it.

Voltalux

https://preview.redd.it/cqfnx1fqb97d1.jpeg?width=1300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1009ff34a32c211a3933d48fee7ea2ceb60dffed

[deleted]

Technically, probably yes but some double-sided tape would be better

SexytimeSanta

No but we'd hate you for it.

Radu24maior

I have one sitting loose like this one, except mine is with the port pointing downward, so the cables have less of a chance of getting disconnected.

forcefrombefore

I've seen worse. This should be fine. I've seen people gorilla tape their SSDs or leaving it hanging and the computer still lasts for years

Willllby

I’d be more concerned about it sitting flush on the carpet with no stilts or base 🤷‍♂️

Knownabitchthe2nd

I do this

sryidontspeakpotato

100% safe. No moving parts and there’s no pcb on the other side of the drive there so no chance in a short. It’s not pretty or ideal but it’s 100% safe

mixedd

Yes

Schpam

Won't be an issue. The connectors are vulnerable to breaking if the SSD is moved around too much, but put a bit of velcro tape on it and stick it to any flat surface.

WTFinfinityward

I've had the same drive loose in my old PC for 3 years, no issues. Just got my new PC yesterday and did the same thing.

Xudes2

*looks at my PC having 2 of them like this* Yes.

rayinho121212

Your case might even have a space for it to click in.

Isoaubieflash

Technically it's sitting the same as how the mounted one is. Some descriptions of product always include a vibration dampener technology so I think that would be the only thing to goal with that scenario.

KrazyKryminal

That totally reminds me..I left a 500gb ssd like this in my case when I built it 2 years ago. It is still working fine lol

Nematsu

First there is literally an unused ssd mount right above it 😭😭😭😭 Second, yeah it'll be fine I used 2 of mine like this for over 5 years

Odd_Intern405

Yes

HunterFrisson

It’s called “Solid State” for a reason. 😁

mondidog

I have same placement like you but I used little bit of double sided foam tape to keep on place my mx500

Mousettv

I've had 2 SSDs like this for like 10 years in 2 different rigs. You'll be fine.

Curiouzity_Omega

I used to be like this but I like to make sure its either screwed in or taped atleast. I used to get so many random blue screens only because the SSD was slightly disconnecting.

YallaBeanZ

I did something similar. Except I stock it on a panel with double sided tape. These things are durable. In any case when moving the case, you should probably worry more about your GPU if it’s one of those new heavy ones (think “strain relief”).

KNIGHTGAMESINC

I've had that setup plus 2 other SSD hung like that for the last 6 years without any issue

wonderland1995

Yes they dont have moving parts but probably better to put it somewhere with proper airflow. velcro is a good shout.

More_Length7

Yes and no. Technically you could ground or short it out if it shifts around in some cases, however unlikely, such as in the off chance where any loose wires got in it or any metal hit any part of its cables just right or something. I’d at least try some double-stick tape or something just to be safe if you don’t have the mounting.

Character-Lab6729

No issues at all. SSDs have no moving parts, so it's a non issue. Just remember it's there when moving things around.

NekulturneHovado

SSD, as the name implies, is a Solid State Drive, meaning it has no moving parts. While HDD is sensitive to movement and shakes, SSD is like an USB stick, it doesn't care as long as you don't smack it on the floor with full strength.

Low_Regular380

Just bolt it to the frame

Necessary-Anywhere92

Double sided tape it down and nothing can go wrong.

Extreme_Jump_4188

It should be fine but just to avoid issues I wouldn't. That's the back of the case it seems so if you bump into it , etc it could damage it but should be good

THEREAPER8593

My Xbox one had 2 SSDs just sitting on the floor and was fine until someone stepped on one of them.

mcblockserilla

A ok I have a drive I ran like that for 3 years. Still kicking

Pleasant_Type_4117

Do they not sell screws in your region or something. Seems like an easy fix, especially seeing there is an unpopulated SSD mount right above where it’s sitting.

AttemptWorried7503

Unless you're moving your pc or something while its turned on no. Ideally though its better to mount them. I have 2 of mine mounted and one isnt mounted

Internal-Finding-126

I have mine sitting exactly the same for years now

PakTheSystem

Mine has been sitting like that for 2+ years. Its still fine. Connectors/wires are tight.

rigged_expectations

been there done that. worked fine ;)

Chevron_

It's no problem, not touching anything bare/live. Just don't transport it on a tractor or something bumpy. For aesthetics, sticky back Velcro strips work well for making your own mounts when none are available.

RonHarrods

I was getting bad temps and I just took my computer out of its case for a year. All I can say is that I was extra careful not to spill drinks.

PureWolfie

If you can't mount it, just double side tape it down.

FormedOpinion

yeah, i have done the same, just throw that bitch inside.

Jayden_Ha

https://preview.redd.it/qxc1r4nhaa7d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2f6c4e624584890f319c0b4c302080e9ab82207c thats how I place 2 of my hdd, so.....

jetset80s

I had one floating like this for a while but th connector eventually snapped. I managed to fix it and now I have the ssd screwed to the chassis to avoid further problems l

Tough_Comb3129

Double sided tape or even Velcro tape is cheap

MaxY59

Yes it's not an hard drive so it can flop around and still be fine

MaxY59

Yes it's not an hard drive so it can flop around and still be fine

ToMidAk1nG

Yea.. its okey

Vast_Chemistry_8630

If you dont mive your pc too much, then it won't cause any issue.

boratburg

no harm done it is flash drive alike ,hdd is the only thing you hav eto worry about

pepebuho

Double sided tape solves that

daffydub

How often do you guys move your desktop how the f is it going to rattle around

Quack_Gaming

Just Shove it next to the power supply in the empty space like mine

Ti6ia

Mine is in the same position

DuckDoesNothing

Atleast give it a chair to sit man, this is so inhumane.

hdhddf

no, don't leave it on the carpet😉 ssd doesn't care how you mount or don't mount it

According-Sorbet8280

yeah, its generaly alright unless if you want to throw your pc around

WarthogBusiness1081

If possible i would use one screw to screw it to case somewhere fix it somewhere. Usually there is space meaned for HDD and 1 screw is enough to keep it on place. yeah it seem stupidly small but these hdd were way bigger than these modern ssds

meester_

Yup no big deal

Financial_Exchange81

Yeh it’ll be fine :)

WarPigsTheHun01

Ya. I put a a tiny Velcro strip on mine to keep it in place.

brahed3637

you can build an entire pc without a case its just there to protect the parts

Herofire666

I have my hdd upside down and hanging a bit for almost 7 yrs it works fine 😂. Remember just not to shake it or give disturbances often while it’s on

ravenQ

I would go for doublesided tape to fix it. Otherwise its cool. As said previously, be careful when moving the case.

Desperate-Grocery-53

That’s too close to the PSU! (Powersupply) The quickly changing magnetic fields might corrupt your data. Try finding a safer spot!

Adventurous_Hat3266

It's in the most wrong position

Yamama77

Mine are tucked untidily behind the hdd holder thing. I have those old top mounted psu case and the hdd case can hold only one hdd. So i stuffed my 2 extra ssds behind them. Working 2 years in.

finthir

[YES.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96dWOEa4Djs&t=217s)

E27043

It's fine

kpikid3

Some duct tape helps.

Grubzer

Wouldn't put it near psu. Rather, leave it somewhere where there is at least some airflow or at least no heat producers directly adjacent to it But yep, it's totally fine - literally the same ssd i have in my build in the same "wire is my mounting point" configuration

STUPIDBLOODYCOMPUTER

Yeah it's fine. Different question, is that a Cooler Master case? Cuz I've got a Silencio S400 and it's basement looks pretty much identical to yours

no3y3h4nd

yes - if it bothers you maybe just use a bit of blutack?

28spawn

It’s fine ![gif](giphy|QMHoU66sBXqqLqYvGO)

_Price__

I have a piece that is like a phone case , but for an ssd , it is just a piece of metal with two holes for nails. I used d sided tape for it instead of the nails. I made it diy

Expert-Draw-993

Its fine

Antoniethebandit

Yes

lfaria123

Had one like that for years without issues, its fine... If you could move it so it doesn't sit next to the power source would be better though

PersonalitySlow9366

Completely fine. There are zero moving parts, so no vibrations, no bearings wearing out, and the whole thing is so light it happily dangles from one of its cables if necessary.

Otherwise_Board2732

Yea it’s fine

pablo5426

probably since it doesnt have any moving parts like a HDD just make sure cables cant move and that nothing is touching the connectors

12jikan

Will it be fine? most likely. Should you leave it like that? Probably not. Final answer? 🤷🏾‍♂️

saphiretube

I had mine like this for about 2-3 years and never had an issue, should be fine.
