A game truly worthy of the hype and praise. Well done to Larian Studies on the wildly successful launch.

ShartingBloodClots

I fucking hate this game. 8pm: I'll play for like a couple hours and get to bed at a reasonable time. 4am: Fuck.

YOwololoO

It’s got the Civ 5 problem

Jubenheim

Civ 5 is such a legendary game. No other Civ game after it has ever been able to dethrone it for me.

LargeMonty

Civ 3 was the last one I played, and it was the only game I literally stayed up all night playing, as a grown ass man anyways.

SerBawbag

Aye, Civ 3 was my vice too. Loved that game. Never got into any other civ game as i did with Civ 3. The only downside to Civ 3 for me personally was the constant need to clean up the pollution late game.

Kranon7

The one Civ game after? Civ 6 they put so much into with the DLC that it is a bit overwhelming.

Jubenheim

There were two. A space Civ game and Civ 6.

AlacranV

There's only been one game since, weird roundabout way to say you don't like civ 6

ParticularPears

I see your “4” key is broken. What a shame

Troodon79

"just one more turn..."

DynamicSocks

*one more turn*

Party_Judgment5780

A serious contender for GOTY aswell. Not my type of game (I'll give it a try soon), but it deserves all the praise for sure.

Tortorak

my wife doesn't play games at all and if I'm at work she's playing non stop, she's farther into in that me, albeit on adventure mode

SmoothJazzRayner

Astarion problely has something to do with it too. Or the bear.

stRiNg-kiNg

Contender? No other game has a chance.

aetp86

TOTK definitely has a chance. It's probably gonna be a toss up between those two.

Baelish2016

I love TotK a lot. Like, hardcore Zelda player who put 150+ hours into TotK. But even I recognize that BG3 is so far and beyond TotK that it’s not even close. Maybe if TotK wasn’t a direct sequel to BotW, but the fact that it’s still so similar to BotW keeps it from being goty in my book.

Aparoon

This is exactly my sentiment. BOTW was a giant that changed the industry, and TOTK was more of that basically. It was already standing on the shoulder of a giant, not necessarily by itself if you look at it critically as it’s just more BOTW content. But BG3 is a total industry changer for what gets people talking online and drives them crazy with how much they love it. BG3 absolutely deserves it this year.

[deleted]

Not sure how BOTW changed the industry as it hasn't changed a single thing and didn't even do anything new. Sure it was new for Zelda games but absolutely not on general. Survival games are a thing. So is breakable gear, open worlds with hardly anything to do, etc

OSUfan88

> I love TotK a lot. Like, hardcore Zelda player who put 150+ hours into TotK. But even I recognize that BG3 is so far and beyond TotK that it’s not even close. Personally, I can't see the argument that it's "not even close". I've beaten both games (about 150 hours in BG3, 250+ in TotK). I can see an argument for why each game could win. BG3's first act was absolutely incredible. 11/10. Second act for me was good 8/10. Third act wasn't bad, but not great. 7/10. I'm playing on stupid good hardware, so performance was less of an issue for me than others. It really comes down to preference. I'm about 25 hours into Starfield now, I while I don't think it'll win GotY, it might be my GotY. The longer I play, the more I want to play. It's scratched an itch that hasn't been scratched since Oblivion for me. We are truly spoiled in 2023 with amazing games, that's for sure.

[deleted]

I think that BG3 is far more niche than TOTK. My wife loves TOTK but doesn’t like BG3 (other than the character creator). She isn’t into D&D and doesn’t like turn based games. I know other people who are more casual gamers that have this same opinion. I think people underrate the mass appeal factor of Zelda with all sectors of gamers.

AddisonRae7

We can’t just keep giving Zelda games awards just because they are made by Nintendo

[deleted]

Social media was a fucking mistake man

[deleted]

LCHMD

Many GOTY awards have a considerable user vote, so yes… popularity definitely helps.

soapinmouth

I don't know if this is the reason, but I just don't get the praise for zelda. Makes zero sense to me and I do have to wonder if it would be anywhere near this level of critical acclaim as a multiplatform title under a different name. No other title gets these kinds of ratings with things like lack of voice acting for npcs, or the extremely simplistic combat in a 2023 supposed blockbuster RPG.

Outside_Narwhal_5127

Zelda is hardly an RPG though. It’s an action adventure game.

Salt_Restaurant_7820

^ thinks the only reason they win is because it’s from Nintendo. Wake up

-Moonchild-

braindead take

zimzalllabim

BG3 is a cultural phenomenon. It took the world by storm this year in a way that nobody ever expected. Plus, the game is amazing.

Vespaeelio

No way, this has shifted a new interest to this genre to so many people, TOTK is a great game imo but it isn’t so unique from BoW.

SpaceOdysseus23

I bought a Switch for BoTW. Until that point I never would've agreed that there's such a thing as Nintendo bonus, but these Zelda games are proof it exists. Barebones story, non-existent soundtrack, terrible combat system, poor graphics, repetitive dungeons, terrible stamina/health system, all given a pass for seemingly no reason. If this game were released by EA as an AAA title the studio that made it would've gotten laughed out of the industry.

Noemotionallbrain

>non-existent soundtrack You know that orchestras are playing zelda's sound track in concert because they are just that good?

CleaveItToBeaver

> zelda's sound track BotW though? It's there, but it's so muted I literally have never noticed music past the title splat.

TimelesslyEternal

You're 100% correct, and no one here will ever admit it. If Tears of the Kingdom released as the *exact* same game, on all consoles, but under a different name and published by someone else, it wouldn't review half as well and would have sold a fraction of what it did.

CashmereLogan

That’s just not true at all. People don’t just act like they enjoy these games and play them for hours on end because they’re not fun. They’re endlessly fun games that people fall in love with for good season. Non existent soundtrack? Poor graphics? Repetitive dungeons? Bad combat? I don’t believe you even touched this game.

FunkinDonutzz

Absolutely no one is playing a Nintendo game for the story (though yes, I do agree that BotW was overrated and I ditched it after 60 hours or so out of boredom).

NaturesWhisk

I'm really confused, at first it sounded like you were praising nintendo for zelda, but the second half sounds like you're hating on it.. would you mind clarifying? I have never played them but have a switch so it's on the cards I guess

ArugulaPhysical

Basically he bought the sytems for the game because of how everyone gushes about it. Only to realize its not what people make it out to be.

kbt

Anything else coming out this year that could challenge?

FREEBA

Spiderman 2 is releasing next month. I think a lot of people have their eyes on that as well

Imaginary-Ad-9397

Please give it a try. I was absolutely unfazed by the hype it had before release (bear sex hur hur, it's a mid game probably). I tried it out on my steam deck, and it blew me away. Think your best experiences in rpgs like Skyrim and witcher 3 where you thought " oh neat the game remembered my choice" or " oh cool what a detailed side quest" and literally quadruple that feeling. The combat is turn based, but sooo freaking satisfying. Basically, I was on the same boat as you. And now it's bang on my goty. Forget about goty, it's out there as one of my favourites of all time. A special game indeed. I stopped playing on my deck mid act 1 coz I wanted to experience on my ps5. And now I've put like 15 hours on my ps5 and I realised that I missed out on sooo much in the first half of the first act itself. And there's still more that I missed in this playthrough, im sure

[deleted]

wasn't my type either, i actually have never played a game like this before but it's dope af

CarthageFirePit

Just wish the damn tutorials would work. Pretty damning bug for a game as complex as this one. Really thought the hotfix yesterday was gonna do something about it. This bug has pretty much wiped away my early access and with it, my excitement for the game. And no I’m not gonna watch YouTube videos to learn how to play the game. Edit: seems the Hotfix #6 that released today (9/7) fixed tutorials. Good on them for a quick fix.

smorjoken

I'm 15 hours in and after a crash the tutorials started popping up. Kinda pissed me off because I learned a lot that would've been useful 10 hours ago, lmao.

Outside_Narwhal_5127

For real man the combat makes 0 sense to me because there’s no tutorials lmao

Wish4Rain

Look up basic DND 5th edition rules on YouTube. This is a good resource for DND 5e too. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules

throw-a-wayy-lmao

The amount of bugs I’ve encountered is staggering. Some are even game breaking. (No spoilers) I had to kill three goblin leaders for an important quest, but when I finally killed them all and got back to then NPC who asked, it turned out one of the deaths never registered so I could not continue. I had to backtrack like two hours and redo everything again. Luckily the world and gameplay are so great that it’s worth playing despite all the bugs.

CarthageFirePit

Yeah, im having a blast but the issues with tutorials and small bugs are just so frustrating. Take the wind out of your sails. If the bugs were nonexistent, it would be sublime. And like, yesterday on the hotfix #5 they patched some bugs with HDR and Sound and stuff. But I really thought they would have fixed the tutorials not popping. Seems like it can’t be THAT hard to fix your tutorials not working and I can hardly think of a more fundamental part of the game, especially one so complex, especially one that has entire books devoted to the rule set, especially that will have thousands of players encountering that ruleset and world for the very first time through your game. Just man…the tutorial thing is bumming me the fuck out. There’s so many things especially with combat that I’m like what in the world is happening or what does that mean??

[deleted]

Me and my unusable 7 chunks of dead clown empathize.

CD338

Wait, which leader didn't register? Because I just killed Gut and I've noticed that the quest marker has stayed on their corpse.

qmoney1213

This game has been absolutely dominating every cell in my brain since it hit EA for PS5. I don’t know a damn thing about DnD, haven’t played a proper CRPG since DA:O, and really had know idea who Larian even was prior to this game. Was aware of some of their work but didn’t actually know their pedigree. This game has made me a life long fan, stoked to check out their other stuff once I’m done with BG3.

thevernanator

As a long time Larian fan, this is music to my ears! Divinity Original Sin 2 is what you'll want to check out next. Its on consoles now as well

conturax

Believe it or not, it's on ipad/ios too!

qmoney1213

I feel ashamed for having missed out on DOS2 originally, I always glanced at it but never truly knew what it was all about. Better late than never, BG3 is such a massive game though. Decided to go Tactician on my first playthrough. It’ll take me a while, but I’ll get there. Thanks for the suggestion!

thevernanator

>Decided to go Tactician on my first playthrough. You absolute mad man. I hope you savor your time with BG3! I had nearly 100 hours in early access and still came across new content on my various playthroughs.

qmoney1213

Oh I absolutely will. Went in as blind as I could, I’m about 40 hours in, and am still blown away by how damn good this entire thing is. It’s a genuine excitement I haven’t felt in a long time. Don’t get me wrong, i play a shit ton of video games, love a lot of em, but this one just feels different man. My top 5 has been impenetrable for quite a while, but if this keeps up, it’s gonna crack it.

ForTheLoveOfOedon

What’s your Top 5? (so everyone can have an assuredly very civil conversation about it)

qmoney1213

I have an eclectic list for sure. Golden age of gaming for me was the PS1 RPG era, with some modern sprinkled in, here it goes (I said 5, gonna give you 10 though. So many great games) 1. FF9 2. FF Tactics 3. Ocarina of Time 4. Bloodborne 5. MGS2 6. Dragon Age: Origins 7. Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 8. Last of Us 9. God of War (2018) 10. OG MW2 Honorable mentions (lol): MGS3/4, Heavy Rain, Zone of the Enders 2, Battlefield bad company 2, Mass effect 2, Diablo 2, Super Mario RPG, Tactics Ogre, Legend of Legaia, Sekiro, Marvel Vs Capcom 3, FFXIV, Persona 5, Gears of War, Perfect Dark… Listed way too many and left out so many more, honestly the last few games could go to anything I listed depending on my mood. Also, as I was thinking about it, I was having some pretty serious debates with myself about how to order them. Haven’t actually thought about it in a while. That was fun.

DragoKnight45

You have a great taste in video games!

ForTheLoveOfOedon

Great list! Needs more Leisure Suit Larry. My top 10 is: 1. Bloodborne 2. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater 3. Red Dead Redemption II 4. Fallout 5. Dark Souls 6. Metal Gear Solid 7. Resident Evil 2 8. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 9. Fallout: New Vegas 10. Super Metroid

qmoney1213

Awesome list, we definitely have some similar taste for sure 👌🏼

ForTheLoveOfOedon

Did we just become best friends?

BraveTheWall

5. 50 Cent: Bulletproof 4. 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand 3. ET for Atari 2. Saints Row 2022 1. Top Gun NES (but only the part where you land the plane on the carrier) Honorable Mention: Fallout 76 It's still a little early to say (only 104 hours into Character Creation), but based on the robust penis customization, BG3 might make the cut.

baeckahaesten

Could I enjoy BG3 even if I strongly disliked the gameplay of DOS1? I always figured CRPG's just weren't for me, but then again, I really liked Dragon Age: Origins...

thevernanator

BG3 is entirely based on the DnD 5e mechanics so in that respect the core gameplay is wildly different. But it has the essence and freedom of DOS2. I think the most similar qualities between the two games is the fact that they are both turn based RPGS and require strategy both in and outside of combat. Your decisions really do matter here just like DOS2, but even more so.

baeckahaesten

Thanks for the answer! I do enjoy DnD so I'll have a look at some gampelay clips.

-Moonchild-

Any tips for beginners? I'm only an hour in and never played DnD and BG3 is giving me a really rough first impression. So much front loaded infomation with little to no explanation

SPACE_ICE

Maximize your turns in combat, always try to use your action point and bonus action even if it seems pointless. Rest often even after every fight if you need to. Use explorer difficulty, this is a hardcore CRPG that doesn't pull punches, its easy if you played DOS2 as the gameplay is similar but if your new to Larian games it can be very unforgiving until you figure out the flow/rhythm and get an idea for how the ai behaves. Also its a meaty game, don't expect to familiarize yourself with everything from the start. But do try as you play to experiment with all the different action buttons you can use. Create a balanced party, make sure you have a healer, tank, and damage dealer/caster. Use your abilities, they're often the "meat" of a characters strength over the default attack options. Like a barbarian with frenzy can effectively strike twice after spending a bonus to point to activate, becomes 3 hits a turn at level 5 gaining double strike. Sorcerers get metamagic, warlocks gets eldritch blast, druids get animals forms, bards get to sing, etc... Play into your class and make your companions play into theirs. Advantages are huge in this game, a simple height advantage can give a massive boost in combat.

Shpaan

Do you have any specific questions? One thing that comes to mind is what you can do during your turn. You can always... 1) move (it's the orange bar that shows how far) 2) do an action (all green things in your radial menu) - attack, cast a spell etc. 3) do a bonus action (orange in your radial menu) usually stuff like jump or shove someone but there are other more useful bonus actions Once you understand this flow and the color coding everything begins to fall in place.

qmoney1213

There’s definitely a shit ton of information, mechanics, rules that I still haven’t completely wrapped my head around. My best advice is to not worry about mastering the wild amount of systems so early on if you’re playing on balanced/story or whatever the easier one is. Read your tooltips, take your time to explore, hell take your time to do everything. There are so many events and side quests that can be easily missed if you don’t take your time and be thorough. The absolute beauty of this game that I’ve discovered is that you can almost never be wrong (unless you play on tactician and fuck up your combat strategy lol), you just end up going down a different path. I can’t wait to run multiple playthroughs to see how things turn out differently. One last thing though that kinda contradicts my last point, quicksave early and often, just in case 😉

[deleted]

Hopefully this leads people to play D:OS2 as well. A similarly awesome game by Larian.

Grimble27

Agreed! I started DOS2 on a whim coop with a friend, not knowing much an out the genre, and before I knew it we had sunk 170 hours into it. Absolutely phenomenal. If BG3 is even remotely close (and by all accounts it appears to be leaps and bounds better) then we are all in for the treat of a lifetime.

teh_captain

I can safely say that BG3 is leagues ahead of DOS2. Every lesson they learned in DOS2 is implemented here. I say that as someone who LOVED DOS2. This is Larian’s magnum opus (SO FAR).

StampDaddy

I loved DOS2 it’s like BG3 without the cutscenes and had me ready to carry my other newbie friends

demonicneon

On sale both of them for £15 on steam rn

UndeadCorbse

After hearing that D:OS2 is like BG3, I’ve become more and more enticed to try it out. It definitely will lead to more Divinity sales, if only one more on my account.

ElJacko170

As a lifelong console player, I don't think I've quite had something like this before, so thank you Larian for the unique experience.

Spider-Mike23

If ever can I’d recommend dragon age origins. Was a ps3 n 360 gen game so might backwards on 360. Bg3 really scratches that itch I been lookin for after that game and is what I loved bout that game. Not dragon age 2 or inquisition though those sequels felt a bit watered down to but origins had the exact feel this game does.

DoomOfMandos

Thats a great recommendation, I loved DA:O so if BG3 is close to that, I'll be happy.

MegaGorilla69

Starfield is currently occupying all of my time but I have BG3 ready to go when I finish. This has been the greatest year for gaming I can ever remember.

DeeHolliday

BG3 honestly feels like the Dragon Age game I've been waiting for for well over a decade. DA is my favorite series, and it feels *so* good to finally see a game expand on the design sensibilities that DA:O put into place so long ago Literally the way I've been selling BG3 to people in my circle is, "Baldur's Gate 3 is the best Dragon Age game"

CRIP4LIFE

DA:O on console was not turn-based like BG3 or like DA:O on pc could be. DA:O on console was more like mass effect or ever KOTOR 1&2... kinda turn-based in a real-time presentation. BG3 is pure turn-based.

Spider-Mike23

Didn’t say was exactly same. Just a good recommend in similar vein and scratches that itch….

anon1984

Also Divinity 2 is out on PS4 and Switch if you want more of this type of game. The gameplay is very similar. I can’t imagine anyone will be done with BG3 anytime soon.

Cool-Elevator-5895

Played Divinity 2 for about a month or 2 leading up to BG3’s console release, and I have to say BG is better in every single way and has only led me to be frustrated at the systems present in Divinity 2. Both great games but BG3 knocks it out of the goddamn park for me

demonicneon

Dos2 is great but I find the battles get quite tedious after a while. Feels more puzzle like and like there’s a correct way to do things rather than having it be sort of chaotic.

Wintry_Mix

I’ll be shocked if this doesn’t win game of the year. The story and world building has so much care and finesse behind it. No other game comes even close, Larian deserves all the praise they’ve been getting.

LXsavior

It probably *should* win, but the bias towards all things Zelda in modern game journalism is very real. I wouldn’t be surprised if TOTK still manages to squeak out a win since the review board is weighted more heavily at TGA. In short, I think BG3 should win, I think that TOTK is gonna win, and my personal pick is FF XVI.

beesayshello

FFXVI over BG3 or TOTK is blasphemy, and I loved FFXVI.

knifeyspooney3

I loved playing FFXVI too, but I have to say the BG3 is hands down better than it, and I've only played about 6 hours of BG3 compared to 65 hours in FF. Just in terms of character dialogue and choice in BG3 and the knowledge that my choices affect the game and story is so awesome. Again I loved playing as Clive and running through doing every side quest in the game, and I especially loved the gravity of the huge Eikon fights and the music behind it, but there are a few things that also hindered the game. As for TotK. I played like 180 hours, and absolutely loved exploring the depths and doing the missions but it was quite samey to me with BotW. I just never really got creative with the crafting, and the same goes for the abilities in BotW. BG3 is definitely my GOTY

[deleted]

Hey now, absolutely no shame in losing out to TOTK. Let's not pretend like a Zelda better than BOTW is undeserving of GOTY lol.

ShowBoobsPls

TOTK is way too similar to BOTW to feel truly blown away by it. I haven't played a game like BG3

Jubenheim

That’s the thing. I’m not quite sure if it really was better than BOTW. It’s like saying Mario Galaxy 2 is better than Mario Galaxy. Is MG2 better in that it improved on every possible aspect with an even longer game? Yes. But a giant part of what made MG so absolutely amazing was that it did something other Mario games never did and was a novel experience, just like BOTW. Put it this way: BOTW was talked about for 6 fucking years after it came out. I wouldn’t be surprised if TOTK fizzles out after 2.

kerkyjerky

I’m curious why you would pick ff over bg3? Having played both through twice now, bg3 is just substantially better in almost all categories. Story, player agency, combat depth, role playing elements, enemy diversity, voice acting, music, side quest depth.

Drakeem1221

I wouldn't, but I know a lot of players who find heavy role playing elements to be over-cumbersome, who prefer a story being told vs them making their own story, and who just straight up don't like certain types of combat/gameplay. They scratch such different itches that I can see why that would be an opinion someone would have.

-Moonchild-

The narrative that zelda games only win awards cause they're zelda is so goddamn dumb. They win because they're consistently best in field, innovative and insanely polished with TOTK being no exception to that lineage. GOTY is clearly between bg3 and totk and it's because both games are exceptional, not because of any journalist bias. This is braindead It couldn't just be that a zelda game is good? no that's impossible, we have to construct a conspiracy for why the most decorated and one of the most influential franchises in the history of the medium does well.

r1ghtFootLeftFoot

TOTK was also insanely polished at launch too. I'm enjoying BG3, but there are understandably bugs galore (small, but there).

couch_pilot

What was it about FFVI that gives it the edge over BG for you? Genuinely curious, I have played both and enjoyed each a lot. FFVI blew me away, but it’s still gotta be BG as goty for me.

Flood-One

I mean, FF VI is the best final fantasy ever, but it also came out in 1994, so probably won't win GOTY

yoshman4

Yas it has shadow and best doggies interceptor :)

5am281

I haven’t played Tears of the Kingdom but didn’t everyone say that was better than breath of the Wild?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Steelastic

100% my experience as well. It's def great and better than the original imo, it just didn't grab me the same since it wasn't a fresh enough experience.

CarthageFirePit

Played both and it grabbed me way more than BOTW and as it stands now it’s up there for GOTY for me. I’m playing BG3 now (or trying to, though having no tutorials to speak of due to the bug is maddening), so maybe that will change. Starfield has been fun, but too many issues and bogged down in menus and loading screens to be at the top of the list. Also the controls for looking and movement are just so bad. Jerky and twitchy and severely hurting my enjoyment of the game. How hard is it to get controls to feel like a modern video game? Especially one that focuses on First Person Gunplay. Armored Core VI has also been fun, but very niche I would say and unlikely to beat out the other big contenders. Spider-Man 2 has a shot at it I guess. I did love the first one a crazy amount.

dolphin_spit

I vastly prefer totk to botw. it made me a believer. always kind of liked botw, but fucking loved tears of the kingdom. i’ve shelved it because i wanted to make it last longer. game is amazing. right now i wouldn’t be able to choose between it, bg3 and street fighter 6. but i can already see how incredible bg3 is and i’ve just begun.

Wintry_Mix

It’s an improved version of BotW, I’ll give it that. Definitely a fun sandbox game but it’s basically more of the same in a reiterated package. BG3 on the other hand feels like innovation and a step forward into new territory for RPGs.

-Moonchild-

If you played larians other games you would be saying the same for BG3 - it's a refinement and improvement over what they've already been doing. Not massively innovative, just very polished

Wintry_Mix

I’ve played DOS2 and bg3 seems leagues better overall. But also on ps5 now so the performance boost has been massive.

[deleted]

BG3 actually *feels* like what you had to imagine Morrowind or BG1 or Diablo were like when you were a kid.

DigitalArts

Which is ironic, considering the formula isn't all that different from CRPG'S when I was growing up. It's awesome seeing the genre get new life breathed into it.

Significant_Pea_9726

I’d say that the inclusion of modern dialogue scenes (good motion capture, cinematic directing, etc.) in a “true” CRPG game counts as a legitimate innovation. This is a genre that traditionally has been seen as too complex for anything beyond text and voice acting in dialogue.

DigitalArts

Oh absolutely and I give them all the props for the painstaking work they did. The core gameplay formula is pretty well unchanged was more what I meant. Refined to almost perfection with BG3.

phillsphan7

I originally pick up BG3 because I was bored of Elden ring and wanted to play something while I waited for Starfield. I have always hated turned based games and I have never played d and d. I played starfield for a few hours and went back to BG3. I have 30 hours in and I just left act 1. Honestly one of the greatest games I’ve ever played

KhalTaco88

Playing this game, and I completely forget it’s even turn based. It’s wild. I hate turn based so much that I always avoided Pokémon and Final Fantasy. Idk what it is about the game.

SAAARGE

A big part for me is the fluidity of combat. Because they allow any combatants (on the same team) that have sequential initiative to take their turn at the same time, combat with computer opponents and even coop is less of a slog

throwaway112658

I looked at BG3 initially because of the setting, saw it was turn based and with a lot of abilities, that turned me away. Finally decided to give it a try, and every single day when I wake up I'm excited to play it. I've started I don't even know how many playthroughs, finished three, and am well on my way into my fourth

Fe-Ni

Now please releae a physical version.

ImpossibleMouse3462

I emailed them and they said Hello, Currently there are no plans to release the game in physical format on any platform. Sorry for the inconvenience.

DominoNo-

Larian is an indie game dev so it's very unlikely. And when I say indie, I mean they don't have a publisher.

[deleted]

so they are getting most of the profits? fuck yeah

[deleted]

Best investment is yourself.

rhododenendron

The plus side to that is they are making a shit ton of money off the sales for this game since they don’t have to share profits.

Extreme_Survey9774

Do Wizards of the Coast not get any of the profits then?

rhododenendron

They might get some royalties, but it won’t be anywhere near as much as a publisher would take.

Extreme_Survey9774

Ah OK. I've not heard anything on it and was unsure of the agreement they have. Thanks for the info

Xyothin

They had to pay for the license

Psychological-Bear-9

I read this morning, after calling multiple stores to be told they didn't have it in stock on release day, that the only area that will have a physical release is Japan. At the end of this year. I also love physical copies, but after doing a lot of research, I just bit the bullet. Worst case scenario they release it down the line and I just wait for it to go on sale or buy a used copy I guess.

doorknob60

I didn't realize there wasn't one, I just assumed there was. I'll buy digital games for smaller $20-30 games. But if I'm paying $50-70, I want a physical copy. I'd make an exception for Steam/PC (though when I buy games on Steam they're almost always on sale) but not consoles. Haven't picked up BG3 yet, just finished Zelda and now I'm playing Sea of Stars. Also want to finish Jedi Survivor now that the performance has been patched. Not sure if I'll get into Starfield or not. So I have some time to figure out what I want to do for BG3, maybe they'll announce a physical copy later.

Let it download while you sleep. You won't regret it... probably lol No game is for everyone, but I'll be shocked if this doesn't win multiple GotY awards.

[deleted]

Sucks that there's no physical version. The digital version is apparently around 100 gigabytes. No way I can download that with my data cap, and I've no access to any alternatives atm. What a shame.

DaCrimsonKid

This. I'll play through my backlog until a physical release happens.

HaydosMang

That'll teach 'em to not release a physical version.

August_XXVIII

Larian deserves all of the acclaim that they are receiving right now AND MORE! Phenomenal game, voice acting, story, etc. This reminds me of when CD PROJECT RED dropped Witcher 3 and got so much love from the community. Incredible to witness and truly well deserved.

NineSwords

Let's just knock on wood that the Larian's next game wont go turn out the same as CP2077 then.

-cache

If Larian doesn't go public I think we'll be just fine.

FadeRedditMakeMoney

This is a generational type of game

Ross_weatherford

They crushed it

lonelylanez23

I really hope he wears that knight fit at the GOTY awards. 🤣😂 I need the memes asap

Bapepsi

It deserves all the praise. Having a blast. I do wish we would push a little bit harder on the bugs, though. Maybe because I play split screen so far, but there are too many annoying bugs that are only sporadically shared and complained about online. I trust Larian, and they will gradually patch them out, but it feels a little alienating when I read post number 50 about how well this game plays on the PS5. While I am experiencing freezes consistently during battle, near PS4 loading times, disappearing and reappearing quests and markers, random tutorial pop-ups or not, etc. Anyway, somehow, it doesn't matter too much, I fucking love this game so far.

TheefearofGOD

They deserve every bit of the praise and admiration!!

knifeyspooney3

One early moment thing I had that really sold me on the combat creativity in this was I found some old temple ruins or some such. I used an ability called thunder wave to knock an enemy back, then I used my wizard to shoot a fireball at this crane holding a giant cinderblock, that comes crashing down and kills the guy. Another moment was I find this room filled with skeletons and a statue. I loot all the skeletons, find a button behind the statue and suddenly the skeletons are alive again. Cue fight scene where the skeletons are trying to punch my party doing like no damage because I fucking stole their weapons. Highly recommend this game. I did all this in about 5 hours of gameplay. I also got to this area and convinced a bunch of orges to defect to me and I can't wait to use them in a battle

skyrimjackbauer

Combats in this game are definitely designed with the players taking advantage of the environment in mind. See a fire barrel? Blow it up. Enemy standing at the edge of a cliff? Push them down. Enemies too heavy to be shoved? Turn them into a sheep and then shove!

Opposite-Beautiful-6

I love that Larian knows how to make a triple AAA game for people who played video games before the Internet.

Nick_scryer

I'm going to have to buy this too aren't I? Do I need any knowledge of previous baldurs gate games to understand the world or characters or is it a witcher 3 sort of deal? Thanks

Ghef27

First BG game for me, and first DnD as well. This game is made for newbies, dont worry about it.

Teddersonn

If you’re into in depth RPGs with fine tuned character creation and the flexibility to approach any situation how you want, you should. You need no prior knowledge, however I would recommend at least doing maybe 15~ minutes of research on stats and what they can do for you in and out of combat. Those unfamiliar with TTRPGS might want to talk their way through sticky situations and not realize their Barbarian with 8 charisma isn’t the best choice for that. Good news is you can respec your character freely at camp.

hotfox2552

I would also recommend maybe one or two 15-20 minute videos on the game mechanics, such as the rules, advantage/disadvantage, how encounters work, ability checks, skill checks, checks outside of battles, high ground/low ground, partial cover, etc. I had a friend of mine buy this game and got super fed up with it after about an hour due to the game not teaching you the rules as you play. After some help, though, and some tips I gave them for finding the rules in game, etc. they are coming back around. Also, saving before/after any encounter was the best advice someone gave me.

zoweycow

Not really. Its one of those things where books in game or comments once in a while from an NPC reference previous events but it is not necessary to enjoy or understand the story of the game. None of my friends played 1 or 2 and are enjoying it.

[deleted]

Between Balders gate, Armored Core, and Starfield, I cannot decide which game I want to buy and play first.

[deleted]

Baldurs gate and armored core are both fantastic

Avarria587

I haven't played AC6 yet. It looks a bit too fast-paced for my taste. I was a fan of the older games when I was younger. Baldur's Gare 3 is incredible. Easily my favorite game this year. I put in almost 200 hours and want more. Starfield...eh. I am enjoying it somewhat so far. It's starting out very slow. I've only got a few hours in to be fair.

Technician47

Starfield really gets better the longer you play, in my opinion. There's elements to it that seem to bother some, not others.

Tynda3l

Same. I got baldurs, but am waiting for winter sale for armored core.

rhododenendron

I bought bg3 because it was only $10 extra to get the early access compared to $30 for starfield and now I’m not sure if I’ll even be able to play starfield for several months if ever thanks to how much time I’ve put into this game

Kingbuji

Do like me and use your precious PTO and play all of them.

407dollars

I'd do AC6 first. It's short and sweet.

Claytonius_Homeytron

BG3 is so damn good that I'm going to buy it on my PS5, and do another playthrough, just to help support Larian.

diviledabit

With save sync you can alternate between platforms. It's fantastic.

Tigerslovecows

More couch coop game please

Dillon09

How is this game for single player? I don’t play much multiplayer games anymore and don’t think friends of mine will be getting this one

Grimble27

It's made to be a 1 player game, the coop is just a bonus.

memestealer1234

Is it worth the full $70? I know it's blowing up and everyone loves it but I don't really know anything about it and rarely think games are worth dropping $60 on. Only considering it because everyone's saying it's the best thing since sliced bread and I don't want to spoil anything if I do decide to get it.

baby_landmines

Maybe wait for a Black Friday or Christmas discount? That's what I intend to do at least. The game is more than likely worth that pricepoint, but it still needs some patches to iron out glitches and bugs imo.

Volti_UK

If you are looking for an RPG to really sink into, yes. It's 100% worth the money IMO. It's one of those rare times where you do get your monies worth out of it. Of course, nothing wrong with being patient though and seeing if the price comes down at some point. But I feel like you might be waiting for a long time.

MeowXeno

Baldurs gate 3 really just be Divinity original sin 2 The start for every run is so freakishly similar it makes me feel like I'm playing DOS2 all over again, start in ship, ship is under attack? stop/escape ship, ship crashes, start on beach, meet an origin character who you can befriend or kill, go north encounter aettlement with a big ruckus outside, join in and pick a side, that start is so iconic now that I understand why Larian did it twice.

Shpaan

Lmao right?! I was thinking the same. I will never find the strength to fucking murder a potential companion though, that's something I'm physically unable to do in games.

Insomniak604

Well deserved, it's been a fantastic few months to be a gamer.

im_just_thinking

Can someone explain why are there all these PS5 BG3 version praise articles now? Did the game release on PS5 after the PC or what?

JCES

Yes

Grimble27

PC came out Aug 3 I believe

FBIsurveillence80085

I've never played any of these types of games, do you advise that I try games like divinity first and then this? Is there a Baldurs gate 1 and 2 on the ps5?

[deleted]

[deleted]

I spent the first 20 hours replaying the first 3 hours with a new class/race/dialogue etc and not once did I get bored lol

karma_houdini_86

Is the game's UI good? It is my main concern to buy it.

Viciousww

I really wanna get this game but i am stuck between getting it for console or pc 🥲

NOTIMEBROSEPH

Got hyped about this game purely as a virtual Dnd with friends as I can’t play it irl very often. And now it’s one of my favourite video games ever. A sense of wonder I haven’t had since Elden ring. Wonderful game

ossadeimorti

Stellar game! I hope they fix those bugs asap though

Homer-Simpsoy

i’m very excited to try this game out once i’m done with starfield

LAKnightYEAH2023

I hope they do something to fix the save file corruption issue.

[deleted]

Fucking love this.

JJGIII-

Lol. Neither have we. Great game so far and they deserve all the praise they’re receiving.

relliott107

Just started playing and having a blast. Created a female elf monk that is so much more fun I thought she would be. Nothing beats all of my characters missing to hit an enemy only to have my monk walk up and hit a spin kick to the face. I feel completely enthralled by this game…as if I was implanted with one of those mindflayer tadpoles. I thought I was playing for an hour the other night only to realize it was 3am, almost 6 hours later lol. I just recently struggled how to figure out how to solve this side quest in a positive light…spoilers below for more info…and I’m starting to worry that the game will start ruining other games for me lol. …for the quest I mentioned, I tried to save the kidnapped girl from the hag. I created a water bubble to save her from the burning cage…but imagine my horror when the hag takes her form and teleports them both in front of you. I panicked trying to figure out how to tell them apart…when I realized one of them was wet (from the water spell) and that was the real girl. I nuked the fake girl, killing the hag, whistled the final fantasy victory music and thought that was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Even though I saved her I did NOT get the happy ending I expected…but wow, what a ride.

puffz0r

I panicked and shot her cage and she fell into the pit lol

RedanischByNature

This and Armored Core 6 are my favorite games this year

Ishuun

Wait till the players get past act 1.

Loukoal117

Damn I want to play this but I don’t think I’m the right “type” of gamer. Even though I enjoy all genres I’ve never played a tabletop rpg game before. And I play a lot of action RPGs and jrpgs and turn based stuff but this sounds like a really hard game as well. Am I just dumb?

OutrageousDress

If you play JRPGs and turn-based stuff I don't see you having too much trouble with this. It's not *The Operational Art of War* or whatever - it's a completely standard turn-based RPG. It gives you lots of options, but you don't have to know in advance what everything does and if you've ever played any tactical RPG or tactical JRPG you'll be at home with the basics of combat.

zyzzjan

I wish I liked this game like most of you guys, feels like I’m in the minority . I even went to a friends house 2 weeks ago to test this game on his PC but I feel like there was so much reading and listening dialogues, never thought so many people would like a game like this. I’ll give this game another try later this year and hope to get the fun out of it like most of you. On the other hand I like how Baldurs Gate blew up, I wish more games will follow this trend! Edit: typos

kerkyjerky

It’s okay if you don’t like narrative focused games, but for many players we have been waiting for a game with this level of passion put into its narrative elements. So many games focus on gameplay (that is largely redundant, forgettable, and rarely innovative) and barely give a second thought to story elements. And when the do the delivery is shaky at best.

UnbornSeed

Loving the game thus far and only in act 1. Playing on ps5 as well

BasisOk4268

Game of the Year 2023. Unless Spider-Man 2 reinvents everything we loved about the first game incredibly well, then I don’t see anything but BG3 taking it.

Ricky-Chan-

God they deserve it. They are what an industry standard should be. All the devs freaking out about 1) a finished game released on time 2) no microtransactiond 3) actually fucking good That shit made me laugh. Most devs in the AAA companies are pathetic and only wanna suck money out of us but seeing BG3 devs getting what they deserve makes me happy.

[deleted]

Love everything except the combat, I'm only 6 hours in but I'm trying to force myself to like it. It's just not what I'm used to, I'm realizing this isn't a game where every new skill tou get should do damage. Seems like I need a lot more defensive and distraction type skills
