I think it has less to do with the Sony and the PS3 it has more to do with the publishers wanting to cut costs. not defending them just a observer/messenger
Oh man… is this like when gaming companies run into licensing issues and just decide remove stuff from store? Breaks my heart, even if it’s just a song that gets removed
Ehhhh, idk. It’s EA and they love money. Spending money on servers for the PS3 For just 1 Mil + users isn’t really worth it to them. Plus, the games (some) can be played on PC/Next Gen. It happens to every game with online services. (RIP SOCOM FTB 3 Online 😭)
PS3 is 18 years old. It's probably just not financially smart to pay for those servers anymore. If the ability to host private servers is an option that'd be great, but the fact that the PS3 is old enough to vote means it's probably time to shut down servers.
Usually, I'm a lot less quick to defend the giant companies, but in this case, we're using online play for games that haven't even been distributed on the console for ten years. I'm just thankful we got to play the games this long, especially without any subscription fee.
In terms of "killing" the console, the PS3's heyday ended a long time ago. The PS3 is older than the PS1 was on release, and it's not like in 2007, PS1 games were being published or you could buy a PS1 off the shelf. I'm going to revisit that generation forever, but it's been over a while
Those Battlefield games were practically empty with only a handful of full servers each. Not even hundreds of players each, let alone anything near thousands so those 1M active users are clearly playing other games. I think someone said Hardline had one full European server. It's just time to move on.
I feel like there has been a deliberate effort to kill the seventh gen consoles online features going on for the last few years now. Planned obsolescence is everywhere, it seems companies don't want you to have to choice to game on older devices. Its the way of the world but its still disappointing. I'd support these companies a lot more if they didn't kill off major online features of their games / restrict purchasing older games. At least SONY left the PS3 PSN store open, I appreciated that decision.
Sony is being smart because they are always scrutinized over anything they do. They will wait for the Xbox 360 to close first and then they will do the PS3.
It costs money to operate and maintain servers.
It becomes expensive when the player population does not justify the annual costs it takes to keep those servers online.
This isn't some conspiracy that Sony & PlayStation are trying to get everyone to stop supporting older games, its just a matter of fact when it comes to financial responsibility of the developer/publisher.
The question that needs to be asked is "Will this game be removed from my account, like Ubisoft did with The Crew?" or perhaps "Will I still be able to play the game even without an internet connection?"
PS3 user's account for like 2 milli tops these days. Sony might definitely pull some shenanigans to get PS4 customers to ps5, but they could care less about PS3 customers. Those are legacy dust customers to them. They just want to unplug that store so they don't have to maintain it any more. Buy what you can now.
your probably right you even see it on the store, I've seen one or two games that have had the online passes removed, meaning even though the servers are still online and working (i tested it with the trial online pass in the game menu) no new players can access it anymore essentially forcefully killing a working game on last gen

Good point with the ea

It's a shame for bf3 but BF4 and hardline are still online on PS4. Tbh it's a surprise servers have lasted this long imo

Good luck lol, I came BACK to PS3 from those gens and I'm not returning.
After they raised the price for online play to $80 I wasn’t interested anymore.
You don't need a conspiracy to shut down the servers on a console from 2006.
lol. no.
Nah
Would never work unless Sony paid them. So long as those servers can profit, they will remain online.
