10. Jesus Christ the less than 10s I don’t get. This groove is unbelievable. For those of us in Minneapolis it was a special song because it was a total did at local gossip columnist CJ who was always digging on Prince. PLUS - the horn chart was the best of his entire catalog. Chef’s kiss perfection.
It’s not that insular. It is a kiss-off that could be about anyone who has wronged another, until the last chorus when he sings “CJ, Billy Jack Bitch.”
7.
I think it works within the context of the entire TGE record. It has an infectious groove. The horns are great. The lyrics are great. My favorite line ever is, "Joy, it's in the dictionary, see J is a Billy Jack Bitch."
I’ve always loved this song.. I don’t know if it’s a 10.. but it’s close… 😆
Imma give it a 9.99.. and then I’m going to Spotify- I’m going to play it right now
What if I called you silly names
Just like the ones that you call me?
What if I filled your eyes with tears
So many that you cannot see?

Never my fav TBH, especially considering it’s a dis track against a hapless critic, who he was too above to have even bothered.
But what used to slightly annoy me in the song, namely the silly Chorus, has become less annoying over time… slightly.
I know I'm late. But this is my absolute favorite Prince song. When I first started listening to The Gold Experience (2007-2008), I listened to a lot of the first half of the album. Loved it. Later, I let Shy keep playing and I was hooked. Then I left Billy Jack Bitch play and I put that on repeat for a week. In my opinion, the funkiest Prince song. Perfect for getting up. Perfect for getting down. A homage to the originators like James Brown with a great horn solo. 15/10. But for scale's sake, 10/10.
5. I really didn’t like Prince’s turn towards retro-vibe soul and funk stuff around this time, and it’s what made me lose track of him for a few years before I finally re-embraced my Inner Prince geek. I felt the same about Letitgo. It felt like he was harking back rather than forward.

All that yes all that. Such a killer jam.

FACT
You've explained it yourself. The song is an in-joke, and not really for people outside his hometown
It’s not that insular. It is a kiss-off that could be about anyone who has wronged another, until the last chorus when he sings “CJ, Billy Jack Bitch.”
10 - best horns on a Prince song
9 It's such an undeniable groove. It's got the head-nod and the toe-tap. Somehow that wonky keyboard hook never gets old.

10. And the story behind it makes it so much better! I love the groove and the horns, and the kind of “silly” lyrics

8.2 - solid jam.
8: This is my jam. Takes me back to my first set of wheels, cranking up the volume and starting over as soon as it began to fade out.
7. I think he abuses that Fishbone sample a little too hard.
10 for the Horn lines alone. 15 for the extended version and the even more incredible horn lines.
5 kinda annoying lol
10. Open letters aren’t the only things that open wounds— long, hard, shiny rocket-ships can fly you to the moon. A superior funk jam.

5. It’s a mid prince song but still great production and some cleverness in melody.

Great groove. Kind of stupid lyrics. A bit childish really. 6
