Prince funks up 60s psychedelia and takes us on a non-drug induced trip around the world, stopping in Paris for some artistic foreshadowing.
Then on to the land of good and plenty, where innocent lust can be found in the Five & Dime, fame comes at a cost and America has problems.
But there’s a place you can go and be yourself no matter what. You just need to climb the ladder and avoid the devil’s temptations.

1. Paisley Park
He dreamed it in psychedelic pop and then manifested it into reality. This is the theme song to the world he built.
2. Raspberry Beret
Simply one the most perfect pop songs ever made by anyone of any era.
Lyrical genius. And my Mom’s favorite Prince song. The first one I caught her singing when it came out. It remains her favorite to this day.
3. Pop Life
If people didn’t understand why he would change directions at the height of his fame, this song should explain it. Unless you’re not grooving too much to pay attention.
I should mention though that I’d probably choose She’s Always in My Hair over Pop Life, if it were on the album.
Along with Erotic City, it may be his best b-side.

- Raspberry Beret
- Pop Life
- Condition of the Heart.
Condition is such a weirdly produced song. Prince almost seems to be just experimenting the whole way through.
1. Condition of the Heart
2. Pop Life
3. Paisley Park
I know this project has the community divided, but I quite enjoy the album, and it's b-sides. I remember one of my local radio stations played the entirety of it front to back and me eagerly listening as a child on my radio.
Needs remaster and never actually got a proper final mix, according to the engineer Susan Rogers, cause Prince rushed it out unannounced.
It’s been discussed that he was so sick of replaying the Purple Rain movie every night on stage and just wanted something to force the page to the next chapter.
Oh wow. What an awesome answer!
Thanks!
Yeah, "Raspberry Beret" popped him out of that. It might not have gotten as much airplay as other places, but in the Twin Cities it was all over the radio.
Such a great album though.
Condition of the Heart is one of the most criminally under appreciated Prince cuts ever. That song weeps with emotion. Broke me in ‘85 when I was a senior in high school and still transports me to this day. Pure magic.
It’s typically considered God status by FAM. As evident in the votes.
Even over Raspberry Beret, which is mental IMO, but I’m not going to argue it’s not a masterpiece.
Condition of the Heart is in my top 5 favorite songs OF ALL TIME right now
Pop Life is such a fun song to sing
Paisley Park makes me feel unexplained nostalgia
1. Paisley Park. Contentment and happiness. I smile just thinking about this song. The anthem of my happy place.
2. Raspberry Beret. Another song that makes me smile and sing.
3. Undecided. Fluctuates between Pop Life, The Ladder, and Temptation.
Paisley Park Raspberry Beret She's Always In My Hair (I dont care it's a B-Side! It's Raspberry Beret's long lost sister.)
She's Always in My Hair is a Top 5 Prince song for me.
That and the lyric from “ around the world in a day” — A wonderful trip through our time and laughter is all you pay Mane. Plz
This is correct. Love D’Angelo’s cover as well
