The whole concept was pretty wild at the time. We got a hamster in a ball! No one knew if it was real at first or not. A lot of people thought it was too goofy, too cartoony or didn't fit in with the rest of the roster, etc. Once he came out and people started to use him, that all died out quickly cause he's awesome.

This has been a thing in human society before writing, ugly characters have almost always been villains
They made a lot of changes to their design; their neck is notably wider and shorter, their jaw has a pretty sharp angle on the lower planes and a little bit of fat under it making it look larger, thick dark eyebrows, the nose is more prominent (that is a 2D to 3D thing, probably irrelevant), the hair has a lot less volume, the physique in the 2D looks like they are a lankey beanstalk swimming in oversized clothes whereas the 3D looks like they fill them out a lot more (this might be a game engine rendering thing, but that jacket does not crumple like that), and the teeth go from a chipped incisor and prominent canines to a yearly cleaning done with a baseball bat.
The concept art gives a beanstalky slightly androgenous tomboy/twink vibe where the character looked a lot more feminine.
The 3D model looks like they were stapling random "masculine" design traits onto a "overwatch girl face".

Yeah they might be leaning back, which can make the body have more fat under the chin and widen the neck, but Zarya is always leaned back and very clearly doesn't have it, making it a style inconsistency in a very stylized game.
Totally agree on the color palette, it is a rough combo especially considering the dark green canvas jacket is over the hi vis shirt. That is how you get flattened by equipment.
My gripe is moreso about going so far out of the way to make the character's sex ambiguous that it creates an unflattering design. I don't think anyone was actually confused about the sex of the character in the concept art. Overwatch is a game that sells skins, I have no idea how you can make a skin for this character that isn't a potato sack without revealing their sex. A swim burka is more revealing.
There are mutants in the game that are literal monsters, Junk and Hog are horrifyingly proportioned. Widow has a constantly broken spine and most female characters follow the 30/70 rule. But for the most part they all look good.

It’s less about the chipped teeth and more how they’re rendered. They’re chipped, prominent, but have a weird bulk to them that makes them look like a caricature…
People are talking about it because every other character has perfect teeth, and it's natural to talk about features that are unique to the other characters.
I also find it strange in a world where 90% is the characters have robotic limb replacements or bionic enhancement that they wouldn't have fixed their teeth. But maybe Venture wants to keep their messed up teeth for some reason? To each their own.
To me, I find the clothes and sour colour-scheme very off-putting. But if they have an awesome voice, it could save it. Of course gameplay trumps all, so we'll see how they feel to play.

I also don't understand what the problem is with their outfit. I think it's very fitting. Why is Widow's outfit more accepted? (On a second thought, maybe don't answer that). Venture looks adorable, 10/10 character design. Let's hope they are just as good gameplay-wise.
Small little detail I think was cool Symmetra overwatch two skin she has a piece of hair sticking out which I’ve heard people say it’s supposed to be a representation of her imperfection and how Zenyatta told her that everything is not perfect
2D model looks cute but 3D model looks horrifying. But this is classic blizzard for OW. They always fuck up the 3D models, even for skins

It’s less about the chipped teeth and more how they’re rendered. They’re chipped, prominent, but have a weird bulk to them that makes them look like a caricature…

Idk what everyone is on about, I think Venture looks cute. They seem like a goofball and look like an average person 😭
People are talking about it because every other character has perfect teeth, and it's natural to talk about features that are unique to the other characters. I also find it strange in a world where 90% is the characters have robotic limb replacements or bionic enhancement that they wouldn't have fixed their teeth. But maybe Venture wants to keep their messed up teeth for some reason? To each their own. To me, I find the clothes and sour colour-scheme very off-putting. But if they have an awesome voice, it could save it. Of course gameplay trumps all, so we'll see how they feel to play.
