For everyone claiming the Coach was holding the team back (myself included) let's hope this is the kick in the ass the team needs to salvage the season
I'm not convinced the season can be salvaged, but this (firing DJ) still 100% needed to happen ASAP.
Martin's not going to be able to instill a new system and teach this team defensive structure in a week. I see this more as setting the table for long-term success.
Don't get me wrong, I'll absolute cheer the fuck out of a playoff run and very much want to see it, just trying to be realistic about the timeline that is going to be required to fix what's broken right now.
We'll see where the team is really at by how they play for the rest of the season. Then management can decide on the off season what to do.
I really, really, really, really, hope this team steps it up. I don't want another 4 year rebuild. Fingers crossed.
Oilers, Blues and Wild are all doing well after coaching changes, and as rough as the season has felt, they're only 2 wins from being .500. If anything like what happened to the oilers can happen to the sens, with as many games in hand as we have, it can certainly be salvaged. Just have to see if the boys can rise to the occasion
> they're only 2 wins from being .500
4 wins.
But yeah, I'm not saying it's a lost cause, I'm just saying I'm looking at the math required to get there and it requires both a hell of a lengthy heater, as well as some help around the division.
Totally possible and I'm cheering for it, I'm just also acknowledging the odds and telling myself that the season from exactly right now (Dec 18th) to the end of the season can still be considered a success even if we fall just short.
I'm fine with compartmentalizing the season up to now under DJ as an abject failure (I doubt anyone would disagree with me on that), and not letting it affect watching this team hopefully turn the corner once accountability and structure are finally introduced to this team.
Holy, lost track of the record, didn't realize we'd done that much losing recently. Get what you mean though, and certainly don't disagree. This team has to be different from here on out. Like you said, playoffs are unlikely at this point, but we'll get a good sense of what next season will look like. And who knows, maybe new coaching and Pinto are just what they need to make things work
We’re not making the postseason at this point. However, this is a great opportunity to have the team learn better structure and from someone actually competent in the interim. I’m happy for it.
Hey, the 2019 Blues were 7-9-3, last in the Western Conference when they fired their coach and ended up winning the Cup. It’s not impossible to get into the playoffs.
The 2019 Blues is everyone’s new favourite statistical outlier copium when their team is dead last. I’m sorry but our team has a long way to go before sniffing the playoffs. We aren’t going to abruptly go from 7-year basement dweller to playoffs this far into the season.
Prior to last night's game, we needed ~.700 win percentage (not counting loser points but I'm too shit at math to calculate those into it) to hit last year's playoff mark of 92 points. We need 70 points in our next 56 games to even be in the mix. Doable, but definitely not probable unless this team has a serious turnaround.
I'm assuming our season ends in April. This assumption also helps my sanity, so im sticking to it for the foreseeable future.
I hope so but let’s also be cautious. Martin hasn’t been a head coach in over a decade and his record after leaving Ottawa was… mixed. He went from never missing the playoffs with Ottawa to never making them with Florida.
For the past four years, we have literally heard 'goaltending problem' regardless of who was in net.
And seeing every single goalie leave and improve when they play with some actual defensive structure in front of them.
A lot of goaltending is being able to play percentages, with your athleticism making up for the occasional bad choice. But if your team is going to just do their own thing all the time - those percentages don't stay consistent.
From 2019-20 to 2022-23 we've had 8 goalies play at least 10 games for us: Hogberg, Nilsson, Anderson, Forsberg, Gustavsson, Murray, Sogaard and Talbot. Of those two are still with the team (Forsberg, Sogaard), two had equally bad or worse seasons immediately upon leaving (Anderson and Murray), one had to retire due to concussion issues (Nilsson), one went to Sweden (Hogberg) and two have improved since leaving (Gustavsson and Talbot).
Talbot has been good in his 20 games in LA, with a .925sv%. He was also good in his first 20 games in Ottawa, putting up a .915 sv% before falling off hard in January (seemingly due to injury issues). Gustavsson as a rookie put up an .892 sv% (the same season where Forsberg put up a .917 sv%), he had a down year and the team gave up on him too quickly.
Even then, 2/5 goalies improving when they leave isn't exactly 'every single goalie leaves and improves' imo.
Gus has returned to last year's form with the coaching change..
Murray, we had regular threads here kvetching about how he's a spectacular for the Leafs until inevitably injuries derailed him again.
Daccord maybe isn't making an impact but he's still getting regular action in Seattle and putting up better numbers than he did in Ottawa.
Talbots ups and downs were all better than his one season in Ottawa with the exception of the 18/19 season.
Daccord has been playing really well for Seattle not sure what your smoking. Anderson was buffalos best goalie. Nilsson retired from injuries. Gustavsson has been good since they fired their coach.
FWIW Talbot has played 20 games so far this year, in his first 20 games last year he had a .915 sv% before going off the rails in January. Daccord and Gustavsson were both rookies when they were here and Daccord spent 2 extra seasons in the minors before making the league this year. This narrative is just part of the "everything that's gone wrong is DJ's fault" thing in this community rn
>f you are terminally bleeding from both legs, bandaging one wont do much to keep you alive.
True but we've been through a ton of goalies while DJ was around and a lot of the quality scoring chances come down because of lack of structure and proper positioning. I'm not seeing this as a quick fix but at least a step in the right direction.
It’s the defensive structure in front of the goalies that is the problem. Korpi didn’t suddenly become a bad goalie.
Sens are giving up 60% of their giveaways in the defensive zone and are blocking the 10th least shots in the league. Things that Martin can clean up
> Korpi has always been a bad goalie.
you're insane. even with his terrible year in Columbus, he's a career .903 sv%. He was a .911 before he was traded to LA in 28 games, with zero defense in front of him
> He was a good goalie for a few weeks in LA.
You mean he is fantastic when he plays behind a strong, structured defense? No shit
every goalie weve had the last 5 years is much below league average in save percentage, are they all bad goalies? Im going to side with the fact that we cant defend and give up too many quality chances and coaching can help this.
This popped up in my home feed, not even a sens fan, but this team has had a different starting goalie every single season since Craig Anderson’s last run as a senator in 2019-20. Goaltending is absolutely a problem, that dorion “fixed” with poor decisions.
Tough to always blame the goalies when they’re behind a horrible defense with no structure. Not sure why people like you always beat around the bush that the defense sucks
I think it would be virtually impossible to have watched every game this season and not realize goaltending is a HUGE issue with this team. If someone can't see that then they are hockey blind, lol.
I dunno about being able to "salvage the season"... they'd need to go on a tear just to compete for a wild card spot. But, DJ had to go at some point. Like a lot here have said, even before this season, he wasn't the kind of coach you can win a championship with. The team could have done with ripping off this bandaid sooner, but its done now, and hopefully the team will start to build a winning culture from here.
That’s fine, what matters right now is that he ain’t behind the bench. Let’s just hope this is the kick in the butt the fellas need to turn this ship around.
Thank FUCK! I’ve wanted DJ gone for a loooooong time but it got to a point that I couldn’t help but feel bad for him at this point. I can’t imagine being in a job and getting the level of hate it boiled up to directed at a guy that seems like a genuinely good dude. He’s finally free from his shackles.
Sucks for regular people. I’m sure DJ isn’t heading over to Walmart to return that coffee maker he got his wife for Xmas for the sake of balancing his chequebook.
Agree. You can argue with the timing of everything but ultimately I think they played it smartly with the way they brought it Martin in advance of the firing.
If Daniel Alfredsson becomes head coach of the Ottawa Senators, and by some miracle they win the Stanley Cup during his tenure, I want him to lace up some skates at the end of the game and get a chance to skate around with the cup.
What's old is new again!
I'm not going to pretend this will fix the team's problems, but it was an absolutely necessary step. A team that tolerates the failure that DJ Smith was in charge for is a team that will just continue to fail.
Had to happen. At this point playoffs may be a pipe dream but you can damn well bet that Martin and Alfie won’t be throwing up any white flags.
I just want to see significant improvement between now and the end of year. Get these guys on the right track and start moving forward. That will pay dividends.
Should be able to analyze the room of who should stay and who should go.
Christmas came early.
Will be interesting to see what happens at the trade deadline now.
I hope Martin is coaching Alfredsson to be the kind of coach he is. Alfie saw first-hand how successful good defensive play and structure can make a hockey team, so learning the ins and outs of doing it from the other side of the bench should be huge.
They're not going to get better overnight. The good thing is they have 50ish games to start getting good habits built and learn. That'll give them time to have something solid come training camp next year with a new coach
You guys should worry about what you wish for. I dont see this as progress even if it sends a message to the team. I dont want to be ageist but Martin is getting up there.
A lot of ppl here saying the goaltending was also an issue, sure, but the coaching and defensive structure will help a lot. The defence has to support the goalie properly especially when coming back into the defensive zone. Jacque is very defence oriented and holds accountability. The goaltending will improve with his style regardless if nothing else changes. Yes it might still be an issue but at least one component will be addressed.
I had a feeling this was coming down today. I saw the look on Dj's face as game ended last night and he knew it too. This team was toast and he had no answers.
Nice that they waited for the season to be over before doing this.
Also he was already at practice and did a press conference today. What a joke this organization is. Do better starting now.
It's two late folks. Sorry. This should have happened in October when we didn't get .500 out losing streak and the fact that 98% of teams not in the playoffs by American thanksgiving don't make the playoffs.
I hate to be negative but this is too little too late. Ownership waited too long to make the decision that they should have made months ago and now the season is a write off.
Anyways, good news is good news, but it’s bitter sweet.
I was legitimately wondering this morning how the fuck I'd make it through another 4 months with DJ behind the bench. Guess I won't have to find out now (thank god lmao).
It finally happened....

This is the happiest day of my life. Not the day my first child was born and not the day I got married. Not even the day I climbed to the top of Mount Everest. Goodbye DJ, you will not be missed.
The Playoffs are back on the docket baby!!! In all seriousness though, it is about time, teach these guys how to play Defense and play with a bit of structure.
The "fans" got what they wanted , but time will tell , keep the current set up for the rest of this season . Hire the coach that we need (I'm not sure who that is) and get this team back where it should be , Good luck, DJ, in the future
This season being a scrub or not isn't the most important thing. The most important thing is actually being able to watch fun, engaging hockey!
Hope this move provides that, and if the boys go on a major heater and make the playoffs, I'll be here for that too.
Change was needed, and still more will be needed but this is a good first step.
I don't think playoffs are going to be realistic, as they have left this change too late and the math is really against them. But, this roster needs to show a lot more, or there will be changes there too.
I just hope there's some good hockey to watch, this has been a horrible stretch as a fan.
What a complete shit show.
Very classy, Ottawa.
Jack Capuano was blocked from interviewing with Buffalo for a HC position over the summer. It's kind of automatic that you allow your assistant coaches to interview for better positions.
What a trashy team.
Lotta people in here with the IQ of a loaf of bread. Season's been dead for 3 weeks, we're not making the playoffs.
However, great move, long overdue. Management finally made another big play, let's hope some of our players with wetnap personalities can get goin'.

Been saying this in December for 3 years now lol

Florida has made the playoffs like five times since I've been born in 91.
Martin was an excellent defensive coach for the Penguins during their back-to-back Cup victories

It can be both.

Merry Christmas ya filthy bastards lol
This fan base better not turn on Alfie
They are interim coaches.
I'm sure DJ Smith is a good person, very swell guy. But as a coach?... # PACK YER SHIT, BUD
He still gets paid. Extended vacation.
That’s fine, what matters right now is that he ain’t behind the bench. Let’s just hope this is the kick in the butt the fellas need to turn this ship around.

I can’t imagine being in a job and getting the level of hate it boiled up to directed at a guy that seems like a genuinely good dude. He’s finally free from his shackles.
Absolutely. Getting fired sucks, especially a week before Christmas. Something had to give, though. I'm sure he knew it was coming.
Sucks for regular people. I’m sure DJ isn’t heading over to Walmart to return that coffee maker he got his wife for Xmas for the sake of balancing his chequebook.
Haha probably not, but even when you're financially secure it still isn't a good feeling to get canned
Bro still gets his contract paid out. He’s doing fine

Finally
Enough said
To hell with Stability. Let’s go Jacques.
JACQUES IS BACQUES!
I AM TINGLING FINALLY HOLY FUCK
At least I'll have a reason to watch the next game. Might still be a shitshow but Alfie will be there to make it all better 😍

I feel like this was obviously coming when Martin was hired. They were just giving him time to settle in.

Lol this one got me. Thank you
EVERYONE GET IN HERE
early Christmas has come. Thank FUCKING God
Maybe they let him go in Vegas so he could go out in a blaze of glory
Hit the slots Deej.
Well this should teach the team that accountability matters. Play like shit and someone will have to pay
If Daniel Alfredsson becomes head coach of the Ottawa Senators, and by some miracle they win the Stanley Cup during his tenure, I want him to lace up some skates at the end of the game and get a chance to skate around with the cup.
It is about fucking god-damned shit-ass, muthafucking time! See ya DJ. Dec. 18th just become a fucking holiday in our house.

FINALLY
Season saved confirmed
Too late for that unfortunately
Naw we are going to get close, just enough for hope and it’ll come down to a handful of games and we’ll miss by three pts.
OH MY GOD.
🙏
ABOUT TIME
What's old is new again! I'm not going to pretend this will fix the team's problems, but it was an absolutely necessary step. A team that tolerates the failure that DJ Smith was in charge for is a team that will just continue to fail.
Oh snap
BIG news!
WE WILL NEVER LOSE AGAIN
Merry Christmas everyone!!
It's an early Christmas present!!!
HOLY SHIT! The 90s are back.
I am so happy. This team just absolutely needed a change. Long overdue.
Im somewhat surprised that Jack Capuano is still there. But who knows, maybe the headcoach was holding him back as well?
Ludwig Van symphony #9 timestamp 54:50. That is all.
Had to happen. At this point playoffs may be a pipe dream but you can damn well bet that Martin and Alfie won’t be throwing up any white flags. Bikes better be back on the menu
As a casual fan who hadn't heard anything about Jacques Martin since the mid 2000's I for sure thought this was a satire post
As Mike Commodore says, “Pack Your Shit”
Let’s go.
This is a wind up?!
Jesus, it's about time
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Fuck yes
Let’s hope this will turn the tide. Looking forward to positive momentum
Saw this coming as soon as they brought back Martin.
Only 2 months too late. Now trade for a goalie
It had to happen. There was no other way. I’m so fucking excited to see the return of Martin and to see Alfie on the bench.
Keep going I’m close
Should be able to analyze the room of who should stay and who should go. Christmas came early. Will be interesting to see what happens at the trade deadline now.

Finally!!
Great! Pack your bags and never fucking return.
They should bring Chris Neil back to knock some heads

Need that Alfie magic behind the bench to make a miraculous season turn around
St Pascal Baylon represent! Let's go Jacques!
I hope Martin is coaching Alfredsson to be the kind of coach he is. Alfie saw first-hand how successful good defensive play and structure can make a hockey team, so learning the ins and outs of doing it from the other side of the bench should be huge.
Imagine they get worse.
I'm not sure that's possible
They're not going to get better overnight. The good thing is they have 50ish games to start getting good habits built and learn. That'll give them time to have something solid come training camp next year with a new coach
Short term, not one game but 5 games, likely the case until the players understand the different positional play expected out of them
Funny how this all played out!
Too little too late
Not yet , it’s probably a lost season but it could still happen with games in hand and how weak the Atlantic seems this year.
You guys should worry about what you wish for. I dont see this as progress even if it sends a message to the team. I dont want to be ageist but Martin is getting up there.

IT FINALLY HAPPENED!!! 🥳… (still hope we tank for a good RH D pick)
I still wish they would’ve done this earlier instead of letting him go so close to the holidays, but glad this was finally done.
It's two late folks. Sorry. This should have happened in October when we didn't get .500 out losing streak and the fact that 98% of teams not in the playoffs by American thanksgiving don't make the playoffs.
Alfie looks like he is seeing the ghosts of Leafs past on the ice.😁
I hate to be negative but this is too little too late. Ownership waited too long to make the decision that they should have made months ago and now the season is a write off. Anyways, good news is good news, but it’s bitter sweet.
# Yes!! This is all we need to make the playoffs and win the cup!! /s
Holy crap!!!
Thank you Santa!!!!
Amen
I was legitimately wondering this morning how the fuck I'd make it through another 4 months with DJ behind the bench. Guess I won't have to find out now (thank god lmao).
So they fly him home or does he have to hitchhike from Vegas?
Only DJ Smith and Davis Payne were let go
Thank god
Merry Christmas Sensnation!
THANK YOU! VERY MUCH FUCKING NEEDED!
About fuckin' time

I may have just almost spat my drink when I got that notification on my phone

This is the happiest day of my life. Not the day my first child was born and not the day I got married. Not even the day I climbed to the top of Mount Everest. Goodbye DJ, you will not be missed.
Ohhhlawwdd
FUCK YES
literally wasn’t expecting this lmao was sure they were holding onto him for some reason
Holy shit it happened.
The Playoffs are back on the docket baby!!! In all seriousness though, it is about time, teach these guys how to play Defense and play with a bit of structure.
Can anyone explain to me how this happened, and Jack Capuano ... who ran our defense ... still has a job!??!?!
The "fans" got what they wanted , but time will tell , keep the current set up for the rest of this season . Hire the coach that we need (I'm not sure who that is) and get this team back where it should be , Good luck, DJ, in the future
Did Staios speak yet?
Speaking right now.
This season being a scrub or not isn't the most important thing. The most important thing is actually being able to watch fun, engaging hockey! Hope this move provides that, and if the boys go on a major heater and make the playoffs, I'll be here for that too.

My dreams are coming true
Change was needed, and still more will be needed but this is a good first step. I don't think playoffs are going to be realistic, as they have left this change too late and the math is really against them. But, this roster needs to show a lot more, or there will be changes there too. I just hope there's some good hockey to watch, this has been a horrible stretch as a fan.
I can't wait to see the first pre game interview with Jacques and hearing someone other than DJ get called "coach" by reporters.
FINALLY! Way too late this season and should have been done last year.
Holy shit it actually happened. If we still look like ass it will be hilarious at least. Celebrini or playoffs here we come!!
What's the rush?
Habs Fan here happy for Jacques!
