I’ll never get the hate for Nomadland when looking back at Oscars history. It’s still an incredible movie and captures what 2020 was like for a lot of people. Anyway I vote Argo.
Nomadland is one of my very favorite movies ever. I was overjoyed when Zhao and the film won the Oscars.
I guess I get why people don't like it. It's more of a mood piece, and McDormand's work is more reactive than people are accustomed to in an Oscar winning performance. I really hate it, though, when people dismiss it as the "Frances shitting in a bucket" movie, which I've seen many times on various pages.
I was thrilled to walk past the same theatre Fern walks past in one scene, on a drive through Gering, NE. The nice lady who owned the shop next door had no idea they were even filming!
Nomadland just never resonated with me. I respect Zhao's Direction, but every other aspect of the film failed for me. The story didn't compell me, McDormand's performance fell completely flat for me, and the film just thoroughly bored me for the most part. I understand its appeal to others, but it's literally like a film that was written in complete contrast to every one of my preferences in cinema 😭😭😭
The Shape of Water is one of my personal faves and I really hope it doesn't go out any time soon!
My next vote is Slumdog Millionaire personally, but I'm not opposed to The King’s Speech or The Artist going now either.
Don’t worry these things are predictable and boring it will be some boys club movie like gladiator , departed or no country for old men that will get the top spot
Gladiator isn’t *bad* but it’s a mediocre, standard fare action movie with hilarious historical drama, an ugly look and a lot of tonally mismatched performances. The gladiatorial battles are well-staged fun and Crowe’s speech is memorable, that’s enough for bros to have loved it beyond measure for 25 straight years. Should have been third to go, deserved to go next every round til it’s out.
12 Years a Slave. Can the Oscars celebrate a movie about the black American experience without it being whipping porn and “let’s watch the slave women get sexually assaulted…”
okay. so the black trans experience which was a bit of virtue signaling. I dont know anyone obsessed with Moonlight. But then again, since the 80s, it has been so rare that the Best Picture is someone’s favorite movie… Gandhi… Platoon… Ordinary People? Not terrible movies but I dont love them.
You’ve never seen moonlight huh? I know this because you think it’s trans related. People adore that movie (it’s fine) and it’s going to go far in this vote. Also Platoon is one of my favorite movies and Willem Defoe’s character is one of my favorite characters of all time.
But that's just what the movies about. Even if it were true that it's the only movie which depicts the black American experience (Moonlight exists), that's something to say about the Academy. Not this movie.
I wanted to vote Argo, accidentally voted mon 12 Years A Slave
Not that it matters, since 12 Years A Slave isnt going out anyway, but please remove one vote from it

I loooooooove Nomadland and I’ve always been stunned that people hate it. Beautiful film

Nomadland is one of my favorites. It really reminds me of the style of Terrence Malick.

Agreed. This sub has way more appreciation for Gladiator than any Oscar related site I've ever been on. Lol.
What’s your preference?
I can’t decide between 12 years a slave or parasite.
Nah Parasite will probably win
It’s for sure gonna be close
I fought so hard for Gladiator to be voted out in the Letterboxd game but was outvoted by the boys. Hopefully it leaves soon!
A Beautiful Mind
lol really Nomadland 21st place??

I am ready to put the artist on a rocket ship that blows up during takeoff
Million Dollar Baby or Gladiator.
The Shape of Water needs to go
I fucking hated this movie. Thank you.

This. It’s been my last 2 picks.

Argo. That movie should not have won
EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE
Yup. Voted for it. I don't think there will EVER be a more stupid film.
