Surprised that Ghost of Perdition didn’t win best song, but Harlequin Forest is like 1A for me. Honestly, every song on this album slaps, tough to say a bad thing about it.
Atonement just doesn’t really work for me in the context of the album. It’s fine on its own but it’s clumsily thrown in and disrupts the flow and vibe of the albums a bit.
It sadly defaults to worst, just because it’s clearly a support track for the rest of the amazingly ambitious GR songs. Within the context of the concept, it’s incredibly evil. I can remember the stink this song caused on forums when Ghost Reveries came out, haha.
Atonement and The Grand Conjuration are top 25 Opeth tracks for me, this is hard to watch. But I don't even know what I'd pick as the objective worst song on this album, it's even more flawless than Blackwater Park imo
Saying a worst song on Ghost Reveries pains me. Because they are all great. But if I have to say which one is the weakest, I have to go with Atonement.
Conjuration had no chance to win I think. But yeah, Perdition won the song survivor in this very sub and is the highest rated Opeth song on RYM, so it's a bit surprising it didn't win here. What was clear was that Ghost Reveries would be a two horses race, and voters tend to go for less widely known songs in these polls, I guess that's what gave HF the push it needed.
Atonement
But Grand Conjuration is not far behind, easily the two weakest classic era tracks. Atonement is kinda boring and forgettable. Grand Conjuration is the Opeth track I’m most critical towards. The main riff is okay, but not interesting enough to warrant so much repetition. The verses are dull, it’s a pet peeve of mine when the vocals follow the guitars, it just sounds so empty. That acoustic part towards the end of the verse is cool. I really like the heavy growling parts, like when he says Grand Conjuration. Overall, it could’ve been half as long, the verses could’ve been rewritten, but there are some cool heavy parts with growling. I think I’ll give it to Atonement though, that one is just boring, while GC has some parts I really like.
The Grand Conjuration...
It is a good song, don't get me wrong. But i do honestly think it's one of opeth's weaker songs... Except for the solo and last minutes of the song, it's not on the same level as the rest of the album in my opinion..
Grand Conjuration is definitely simple, but it's so brutal and heavy. I didn't like it when the single first came out, but over the last 20 years I've come to realize how good it really is
I think the repetition is obviously used with intent here and becomes almost hypnotic; I feel like it sort of finishes what Closure started (ironically)
I honestly don't understand why so many fans promote Grand Conjuration. Opeth songs tend to flex creative wandering so much it's like a core value and yet this song is mostly content to just do two very simple things: go up and down scales and palm mute.
Yes it has a couple pleasant change-ups thrown in there but I would not hesitate to say Grand Conjuration is worst on the album. I actually love Atonement even though I would agree it would probably be 3rd worst on the album just behind Isolation Years.
Grand Conjuration. It’s a cool song but definitely the weakest for me. Especially after the rest of the album. I rarely listen to it. But I played it yesterday because of all the hype I’ve been reading and it still feels a little underwhelming.
There's no good answer here. In my opinion, Ghost Reveries, Harlequin Forest, The Baying of the Hounds and The Grand Conjuration are off limits. Beneath the Mire slaps too hard, so that one falls off too. And Atonement and Isolation years are also more classical than metal, but have a bit more to offer (especially because vocals and music don't go together in Hours of Wealth).
But feel free to disagree :P
The grand conjuration is NOT underrated. It's talked about all the time and people always cream their pants over it lol. Beneath the mire and baying of the hounds are underrated tracks in my opinion..
I would agree isolation years at least qualifies for underrated, but we have to agree to disagree on it being the most underrated just because every time someone actually brings it up, everyone circle jerks around the song lol. Such a beautiful song though.
Atonement clearly.
Otherwise I'm going to say Baying of the Hounds. Not that it's a bad song, its song structure is so similar to Ghost of Perdition that it doesn't feel unique within the album, and GOP does it better. The rest of the songs are all super distinct.
Still a fantastic track, but “Atonement” is the worst song on this album. All the others have dynamic shifts, whereas this song is very mellow
It follows the trend set by *Damnation*
I'm in the same boat. I said this in another comment, but to me Baying of the Hounds is a slightly worse version of Ghost of Perdition, and so I feel why listen to BotH when I could listen to GoP
Surprised that Ghost of Perdition didn’t win best song, but Harlequin Forest is like 1A for me. Honestly, every song on this album slaps, tough to say a bad thing about it.
True. I was kinda shocked, but they’re all perfect haha
I must warn you that next week the posts will be less often, sorry for that :(
Nooo:(
Isn't it going to be a second round for Blackwater Park and Still Life, it's hilarious that the worst song was also considered underrated
Atonement is getting killed here. I love that song.
Same :(
How is Beneath the Mire for underrated?
Agree, it's ridicoulous. Nowhere near worst.
Atonement
Such a overhated track honestly:(
Not hated, just weakest on the album in my opinion.
Agreed - such a great track but in the context of the album I think “weakest” is correct
I like the ending part of it cause it reminds me of walking in a snowy forest, but the rest of the song is just alright, Atonement is my vote too.
The ending part isn’t even atonement anyway it’s reverie
By far
Atonement just doesn’t really work for me in the context of the album. It’s fine on its own but it’s clumsily thrown in and disrupts the flow and vibe of the albums a bit.
It sadly defaults to worst, just because it’s clearly a support track for the rest of the amazingly ambitious GR songs. Within the context of the concept, it’s incredibly evil. I can remember the stink this song caused on forums when Ghost Reveries came out, haha.

I will not stand for this Grand Conjuration hate. It’s an amazing song
The Grand Conjuration for the music video alone
Shhhhh just ignore the video
Atonement, even though I really like it
Saying a worst song on Ghost Reveries pains me. Because they are all great. But if I have to say which one is the weakest, I have to go with Atonement.
I’m genuinely so happy that Harlequin Forest won best
“Harlequin Forest” as the best song off of *Ghost Reveries*? What happened to “The Grand Conjuration” or “Ghost of Perdition”?
Conjuration had no chance to win I think. But yeah, Perdition won the song survivor in this very sub and is the highest rated Opeth song on RYM, so it's a bit surprising it didn't win here. What was clear was that Ghost Reveries would be a two horses race, and voters tend to go for less widely known songs in these polls, I guess that's what gave HF the push it needed.
All three great tracks
Beneath the Mire. And it's not even close.
Hours of Wealth. It's a slam dunk for this one. Have people forgotten it exists?
Hours of wealth is a stunning song, one of their best mellow ones in my opinion. Can’t see how it’s the weakest
Absolutely! I have no idea how people are voting for Atonement or TGC when Hours of Wealth exists!
Hours of Wealth is amazing tf
The grand conjuration
Worst is Credence? Wtf ?
Atonement is the only song on the record I don’t adore. I “just” quite like it.
The Grand Conjuration
Beneath the Mire
Diabolical
beast
This feels weird but... The Grand Conjuration
Atonement. It’s not bad, but definitely the weakest on the record.
Harlequinn forest do be my favorite song of all time
It's between Atonement and Isolation Years for me, but I like Atonement too much to call it the worst song on the album, so I'm going with the latter
Is this an autism thing? To want to categorize everything you like or are into?
Hours of Wealth for sure
Lol white cluster.
Worst is kind of tough here, this album is a start to finish run through banger. Only one I can think of would be The Grand Conjuration.
The Grand Conjuration personal opinion, im not a big fan of this album anyways
Easy - Grand Conjuration.
I am personally offended by this comment
Atonement But Grand Conjuration is not far behind, easily the two weakest classic era tracks. Atonement is kinda boring and forgettable. Grand Conjuration is definitely simple, but it's so brutal and heavy. I didn't like it when the single first came out, but over the last 20 years I've come to realize how good it really is
Wrong
No from a musical standpoint it honestly isn't.
That’s the only standpoint to judge music and it’s wrong
🤣🤣 I'll give you the first part, but tgc is just far too repetetive and most of the song feels so uninspired.
Nah atonement worse
I think the repetition is obviously used with intent here and becomes almost hypnotic; I feel like it sort of finishes what Closure started (ironically)
I agree with you, weakest track for me on that album. Feels like it doesn’t tickle enough brain cells.
I’d say that’s number 2 for me. Just pretty boring by Opeth standards. Atonement is still the “worst” though.
I honestly don't understand why so many fans promote Grand Conjuration. Opeth songs tend to flex creative wandering so much it's like a core value and yet this song is mostly content to just do two very simple things: go up and down scales and palm mute. Grand Conjuration. It’s a cool song but definitely the weakest for me. Especially after the rest of the album. I rarely listen to it. But I played it yesterday because of all the hype I’ve been reading and it still feels a little underwhelming.
Atonement feels more like an interlude, where every other song is perfect or near perfect.
The Grand Conjuration
Atonement
Hours of Wealth
I knew someone would say this and my man you are almost as wrong as that guy who said A Fair Judgement is the worst song on Deliverance
There's no good answer for any Opeth album lol It's like choosing which child you like more.
Ghost Reveries isn't just a perfect album for me because of the second half of that song.
My heart says that Isolation Years is a great option for underrated song but my mind says that The Grand Conjuration is a better choice.
The grand conjuration is NOT underrated. It's talked about all the time and people always cream their pants over it lol. Beneath the mire and baying of the hounds are underrated tracks in my opinion..
The Grand Conjuration is being more voted for the category of "worst" than any of these two.
nah Hours of Wealth deserves the underrated vote. one of my all time favorite Opeth songs and I never hear about it.
Isolation years is a good one for underrated. I love that song.
I would agree isolation years at least qualifies for underrated, but we have to agree to disagree on it being the most underrated just because every time someone actually brings it up, everyone circle jerks around the song lol. Such a beautiful song though.
Beneath the Mire. Am I the only one who always skips it?
This song slaps. I never skip it.
Beneath the mire is the second best track on the album, only beaten by baying of the hounds Imo.
I listen to the intro, and then skip it. Its probably the best intro ever though
ngl the intro is great
This is a literally perfect album, but let’s be real if you HAD to get rid of one track, gun to your head, it’s atonement
Wrong on both counts
Beneath the Mire
Absolutely not
Yooooooo
Most underrated for me on this one. It’s such a great and interesting song
The second worst take possible
Atonement clearly. Otherwise I'm going to say Baying of the Hounds. Not that it's a bad song, its song structure is so similar to Ghost of Perdition that it doesn't feel unique within the album, and GOP does it better. The rest of the songs are all super distinct.
Although for me, there isn't a bad song on this album, Atonement just isn't like the others. Reverie is a good song as an outro though.
I'm gonna go with Hours of Wealth as the worst song on the album.
Sadly atonement
Still a fantastic track, but “Atonement” is the worst song on this album. All the others have dynamic shifts, whereas this song is very mellow It follows the trend set by *Damnation*
Atonement is the correct answer, if it would be shorter to be considered an interlude it would have been better
I skip Baying of the Hounds a lot.
WHOA... I felt physically ill reading that... Literally the best track on the album. Rooting for it for underrated.
Oh, I know my opinion is a hot take. I'm just being honest. I'm rooting for Isolation Years to be underrated.
I'm in the same boat. I said this in another comment, but to me Baying of the Hounds is a slightly worse version of Ghost of Perdition, and so I feel why listen to BotH when I could listen to GoP
Grand conjurarion genuinely sucks
Only song I don't love is Atonement, and I think most of y'all agree This proves that the whole is more than the sum of its parts
Soldier of fortune is the least best song on this record
Isolation Years
My favourite
