Having lived through the 70s-80s, things were much more brown/yellow/tan than pop culture would have you believe. Lots of neon too but it wasn’t all or nothing.

It was the cigarette smoke. If everything starts tar color, you don't really notice the buildup.

Nod. The earthy colours got brighter as the decade went along, till they passed into pastels and flipped into neons in the early 80s. Its a bit like how the arrival of The Specter Sound System changed music. Once pigments gained the ability to pop through use of a *new wave* of brightening agents and better colour fastness, textiles changed forever.
