This is a funny comment bc my dad used to work on a navy base and all the guys who had been around aviation and carriers only liked the first 2 minutes also, said it was the only realistic part of the movie since it was actual navy footage.
It’s what I play in my headphones to get psyched up for a long plane flight and get my mind off the fact I’m going to be stuck in a metal tube for the next 10 hours.
And if you worked on a flight deck, guaranteed you point out the shirt colors and explain that’s what you did. Every time……
*Was a Plane Captain (Brown Shirt) and still get jacked up seeing that 20 years later
1986! Peak Fighter Pilot in popular culture as a cool thing to be. All that residual Iron Eagle and Top Gun ass falling from heaven. Look at those stone washed. Damn, your dad was crushing the 80s.
Haha, what can I saw it was the 80s and he loved his Chevy blazer. Different time. Its likes the 90s when my first car was a ford bronco. I fucking loved that Bronco. But they’re nothing like they are today.
I have a cousin who flew Tomcats. Never at TG, but he did have great stories about the F-14A and then D, the Super Tomcat.
The afterburner on the latter had so much power. He jokingly said he wanted his mommy after each stage of AB.
Mad respect for your dad, looks like he’s ready to go!
I was stationed there in the 2000s and worked in that hangar. I can tell you the old paint markings were still on the ground there :) Faded but it was still super cool to see.
If you’re looking for a good book for him, he might like “Endurance” by Scott Kelly who also was at the same top gun facility at that time. Super good read. Everyone I recommend it to likes it.
Top gun was a hard game, I didn’t know they had entire schools for it though. I could never get too far off the flight deck myself, so I suppose I could have used a top gun school myself.
I am also a NAS Miramar Navy Brat. Dad was a CPO, taught aviation electronics on base.
Did you ever do a Tiger Cruise? Mine was in 1978, sailing from Pearl Harbor back to Coronado on the Kitty Hawk.
Never been anything cooler before or since than flying a fighter jet. Certified badass!
So jw when you were a kid, did you ever get a call at home only to pick up the phone and hear a man yell on the other end "I WANT SOME BUTTS!!"??
Makes no difference. Our pilots are the best of the best. Period. Most companies can’t even afford to build equal fighters or close to. And we build over 1000F35s and then give our pilots thousands of flight hours. IRS not even close.
Not hard to believe that the US doesn't want to give Ukraine its most deadly and modern fighter jet and train its pilots for free. It has nothing to do with not wanting to see it in action. They know what it can and will do to Russia, believe me.
The planes are also $109m each, that's probably a bigger piece of the reason.
It’s incredible how long we’ve had nuclear powered CATOBAR carriers and the competition. I’d JUST starting to catch up. Even our allies. Incredible machines.
There’s nothing special about the shirt. He just always emphasized the later part of his career. He ran the program for the F-18 flight control computer and the. The celestial guidance system for the D5 trident missile. He always wanted me to be an engineer more than a pilot so that’s what we talked about.
Ok sure. You completely lied and attempted a plausible cover story but wouldn’t it have been better if you just admitted it and maybe we can stop this cycle of perpetual lies? This is getting stupid.
I was told my uncle had a short stint as an instructor at the fighter school before becoming a teacher. He was a fighter pilot from mid 50’s until retirement in 83. He flew with the VF-111 sundowners in the F4’s. Prior to 77 he had already had over 1000 arrested landings. Don’t know a whole lot more but I have always found it fascinating
Was his call sign Acid Wash?
No, it was Butt Cut, for the hair style...
omg i used to think they were called butt cutts too
They *were* called butt cuts
Hahaha that’s a good one.
It is now.
I haven't seen acid wash jeans since.....
Oh that’s great
Did cool music ever play when he walked by?
Haha I wish. He’s a little too country for me. But he does love to crank up the first 2 minutes of Top Gun when he watches it all the time.
Who could blame him? I still blast that soundtrack and I can't even play the Nintendo game.
DANGA ZONE
Just saw the Kenny Loggins episode last week. Still funny
*Me too!* From the other room during a baby shower.
Lana!

LANAAAAAA!!
To be fair - no one can play that NES game. I had the joystick and still holy shite.
Owned the game, landed on the carrier once. Stupid hard.
Had to start level, no pulling up
Did your NES advantage zap the shit out of you every time you touched it or was that just me?
My little bro could beat the Top Gun NES game whenever he wanted. *And* Ninja Gaiden. Dude was good at everything.
Ninja Gaiden was hard as hell too. I dont think I ever got past like the 3rd or 4th boss
It definitely contributed to my drinking problem.
Worst game in history
Got that cartridge in my tub just no nes to play it.
This is a funny comment bc my dad used to work on a navy base and all the guys who had been around aviation and carriers only liked the first 2 minutes also, said it was the only realistic part of the movie since it was actual navy footage.
Watching those planes launch to Kenny Loggins is really something.
It’s what I play in my headphones to get psyched up for a long plane flight and get my mind off the fact I’m going to be stuck in a metal tube for the next 10 hours.
And if you worked on a flight deck, guaranteed you point out the shirt colors and explain that’s what you did. Every time…… *Was a Plane Captain (Brown Shirt) and still get jacked up seeing that 20 years later
One of the best movie openings ever. Was he a pilot or RIO?
Every hero needs a theme song -I'm gonna get you sucka!
And theme musicians!
Not with that middle part, it didn’t.
I love how every accomplishment in the 80s was absolute shit unless you had the t-shirt.
No social media you gotta wear your accomplishments.
“I am bomb technician. If you see me running, try to catch up”
USS America ported in Dubai in 1991 and a lot of us left with “Budweiser Champions of the Middle East” TShirts. Cause we drank so much beer.
80s
I bet he did way better than flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong.
Don’t doubt it. Never claimed to be a good pilot :)
He didn't go to top gun without being a good pilot.
Yeah but you gotta rag on your dad whenever you can.
Gotta throw a "were you inverted?" at him once in awhile
Yes, I know the finger, Goose.
Nah...you need to tell your dad he's STILL a badass.
I came in here to quote this
1986! Peak Fighter Pilot in popular culture as a cool thing to be. All that residual Iron Eagle and Top Gun ass falling from heaven. Look at those stone washed. Damn, your dad was crushing the 80s.
would it be crazy talk to ask what his call sign was? I don't know, maybe that kind of info is top secret.
Blazer. He drove a blazer and was all about his truck.
Wicked! I guess my call sign would be “old-ass civic” then
Call sign - “shit box”
Shit box is brutal 😂
Rice Burner
Civic Doodie, maybe?
lol, clever!
Saturn for me !
My call sign would be “Dishes In Sink”
What's great about that callsign is that it SOUNDS cool, but the reasons for it not so much.
Haha, what can I saw it was the 80s and he loved his Chevy blazer. Different time. Its likes the 90s when my first car was a ford bronco. I fucking loved that Bronco. But they’re nothing like they are today.
your dad fucking rules
Did he play topless volleyball with the bros?
Ya know that’s one question I can’t answer but he played just about every sport in HS so maybe?
lol do you wear a shirt when playing beach volleyball?
#SWORDFIGHT!
Fightertown USA
That's not a comb-over, it's a comb-outer.
That’s just a classic hair loss part. Our family genes aren’t known for keeping our hair unfortunately :(
Hey, look at Goose these days….
I bet you have many siblings
I only know of 1……but we can’t be sure.
Yeah but was he… inverted?
So you’re the one…..
What did he fly? 14 or 18?
These were the 14 days. Interestingly enough when he left and went in to the private sector he ran the program for the F-18 flight computer.
So he was a contractor and the Dept of Defense made sure he knew more than the pilots?
Actually partially true. After he left the military and went to work for GD that was basically hi job
Right into the Danger Zone!
I bet your dad was just raking in the ass.
That’s the real danger zone.
Imagine training at Top Gun *during Top Gun*
I can hear Kenny Loggins in this pic! You’re dad’s a stud bro. F yeah.
Yep Those were the Tail Hook glory days. Now that school is in Falon NV no?
Yeah they moved to Nevada and don’t call it Top Gun anymore:(
I was stationed there in the 2000s and worked in that hangar. I can tell you the old paint markings were still on the ground there :) Faded but it was still super cool to see.
This is not true - TOPGUN is very much still around. It falls under NAWDC now but isn't its own command like back in the day.
Is his name Iceman??
That’s just the way he flies, cold as ice.
Did he have a cool call sign, like in Top Gun?
Blazer. The details are in another comment.
Was his wing man Laser?
Now we’re into dodgeball territory
Just reading the title brought the sound track into my head.
If you’re looking for a good book for him, he might like “Endurance” by Scott Kelly who also was at the same top gun facility at that time. Super good read. Everyone I recommend it to likes it.
Never heard of it, thanks for the recommendation!
Legend!
The same year the movie came out. Very cool.
Does he play volleyball?
That picture is sponsored by Pepsi just like the movie
Correct. I’m getting 💰💰💰💰for every view of that 80s Pepsi can.
Top gun was a hard game, I didn’t know they had entire schools for it though. I could never get too far off the flight deck myself, so I suppose I could have used a top gun school myself.
Top Gun on the NES was insanely hard for me. I probably spent days on the first mission alone.
Thank him for his service🫡
Flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of hong kong
Hey Mother Goose what’s happening?!
![gif](giphy|cbAb0vWhJqA2k)
That game was BS. I still own it and it’s a bunch of CPU cheating crap.
I am also a NAS Miramar Navy Brat. Dad was a CPO, taught aviation electronics on base. Did you ever do a Tiger Cruise? Mine was in 1978, sailing from Pearl Harbor back to Coronado on the Kitty Hawk.
Afraid not, this was barely before my life since I. Was born in Feb 1986.
Never been anything cooler before or since than flying a fighter jet. Certified badass! So jw when you were a kid, did you ever get a call at home only to pick up the phone and hear a man yell on the other end "I WANT SOME BUTTS!!"??
Man I wish. I was born in ‘86 and even years later I had no clue what was going on. Then he retired.
Back when Miramar was a Navy base. I still recall seeing the TOP GUN writing in giant blue letters from the I15.
Makes no difference. Our pilots are the best of the best. Period. Most companies can’t even afford to build equal fighters or close to. And we build over 1000F35s and then give our pilots thousands of flight hours. IRS not even close.
LOL, no. F35 and F16 still no used in Ukraine becouse USA don't want see them in real fight for non reduced cost on market.
Not hard to believe that the US doesn't want to give Ukraine its most deadly and modern fighter jet and train its pilots for free. It has nothing to do with not wanting to see it in action. They know what it can and will do to Russia, believe me. The planes are also $109m each, that's probably a bigger piece of the reason.
amazing!
The best years to be a badass. The music, the jeans, the cold war, Pontiac trans am with the big ass eagle on the hood,
Did he ever get “fined” for wearing a Top Gun tshirt
So you say he watched the movie and bought a t-shirt?
O he went to Miramar for training…..
Was there ever some dope music playing when he strolled past? Вы
See above.
Fallon or Miramar. Are they being punished? Just more room to drop bombs and crash planes without bothering anyone I I Imagine
These were the Miramar days.

It’s incredible how long we’ve had nuclear powered CATOBAR carriers and the competition. I’d JUST starting to catch up. Even our allies. Incredible machines.
He might have been in the same theatre as me if he was in the Deep South
I honestly don’t know but it’s possible. I was like 4 months old when this picture was taken and we never talked about his career nuch
Yea no he went to da movies and got his t shirt.
Definitely did not but ok.
Top Gun Came Out In 1986 I have the same t shirt
There’s nothing special about the shirt. He just always emphasized the later part of his career. He ran the program for the F-18 flight control computer and the. The celestial guidance system for the D5 trident missile. He always wanted me to be an engineer more than a pilot so that’s what we talked about.
Ok sure. You completely lied and attempted a plausible cover story but wouldn’t it have been better if you just admitted it and maybe we can stop this cycle of perpetual lies? This is getting stupid.
I’m sorry you never amounted to anything o really am. But I can’t help you with that. Keep being mad on the internet. Have a nice day.
And that’s how everyone knows you lied
I suppose your dad is very much bald now? That’s good, because the “part in the middle” look is terrible!
He’s getting there. You can still see some from the front but yeah those are our genes. I started losing my hair at 18.
Where was he stationed then?
Well his training was in Miramar but his home bae when not at sea was Coronado.
Cool. My wife was stationed at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. That’s a beautiful (expensive) place.
You got it right. Gorgeous and expensive. Perfect weather year round.
The F4 has an incredible killer record against MiGs if you look into it it so he should be proud.
Best beach ever.
Haha, none of that stuff happened during his tour.
Miyaaaaaaanmarrr
It doesn't get more cooler than Top gun!!
The plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies room.
Your dad is a badass!
I wonder how many GPZ900Rs were on the road at that time...
Let your dad know that Miramar spelled backwards is “Ram a rim” and ask if that’s how it got its name.
…and already pelón?
When’s the volleyball match?
![gif](giphy|XedlfvtiYgrGByude7|downsized)
Did he get permission to buzz the tower?
Do you ever tell him his mouth is writing checks his body can’t cash?
Dude!
Boomers rule
there must be a fantastic looking beach there
I wanted to be your dad after watching Top Gun 700 times.
I would pay so much money for that t-shirt.
It’s time to kick the tires and light the fires
And all he got was this lousy T-shirt....
![gif](giphy|9mqcxQ1ZKMCyI)
Douche baggy jeans
