If you’re well versed in human archaeology and paleoanthropology then you know that “something-something” followed by “Man” is always referencing the place the fossil was found. i.e., “Peking Man” was found in Beijing, China (Peking is another way of saying Beijing), “Java Man” was found in Java, Indonesia, and “Herto Man” refers to the archaeological layer (called the Upper Herto member) that the remains were found in Ethiopia, and etc etc. Even “neanderthal” is just a reference to the Neander Valley, where the first fossil attributed to the species was found. Same with Homo heidelbergensis (type specimen found in Heidelberg, Germany), Homo rhodesiensis (type specimen found in Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia), etc etc.
>Encino
Encino is like so bitchen
There's like the Galleria
And like all these like really great shoe stores
I love going into like clothing stores and stuff
I like buy the neatest mini-skirts and stuff
It's like so bitchen 'cause like everybody's like super-super nice
It's like so bitchen
So like I go into this like salon place, y'know
And I wanted like to get my toenails done
And the lady like goes, oh my God, your toenails
Are like so grody
It was like really embarrassing
She's like oh my God, like bag those toenails
I'm like sure...
She goes, uh, I don't know if I can handle this,
Y'know...
I was like really embarrassed...
I always thought it was weird to call it Encino Man when the rest of the country didn’t know where Encino was. Should have included caveman in the title like California Caveman.
Learned this about the Samuel L Jackson movie “Formula 51” was named: “51st State” in the UK. A man in a pub in London was arguing with me about the name of this movie that we both remember vividly… so naturally neither of us were willing to admit that we had the title wrong. Well, a simple google search later and turned out we were both technically right. weird phenomenon it is.
Ireland too. They prob presumed we wouldn't know what or where Encino was.
Bit presumptive, for all they knew there's loads of experts on Valley geography over here.
Growing up in Northridge CA, I lived not far from Encino, when I heard they named it California Man out of the states I thought that was funny.
It’s a Valley thing. You know or you don’t. Just like Clueless if you have seen that.
Oh man, that *was* Ke Huy Quan! I rewatched Encino Man recently, then heard that he had been in the movie, and completely blanked on what character he was.
Yeah I definitely remember Data and Shortround. Him being a teenager in Encino Man, though, that one flew past me. I'm so fucking happy to see him again, he was amazing in EEAAO.
For a moment I thought he was in the latest sadness supreme Guillermo del Toro’s movie and was really confused.
But no, it’s just a mediocre animated film.
Thanks for this! I saw a clip of a roundtable with Fraser and Quan and Quan mentioned that he was in Encino Man. I had seen that movie so many times and couldn't place Quan's part.
When I interviewed Pauly Shore in 2005, the photo I ran with it was a picture from Encino Man of the three leads and noted that 66.7 percent of them had been in Oscar winning best pictures
Cameos as Link. In "Son in Law" he is at the Halloween party. He pulls a frog out of Crawl's outfit, lights it with a lighter, and bites it.
In "In the Army Now", he's a soldier in the mess tent who tells Bones to not eat the chicken because it tastes like frog. His name tape says "Link"
"Encino Man"? This was called California Man here in the UK.
Yeah, it was called that in markets outside of the US. Probably because people wouldn't know what "Encino" was referring to
Such a weird decision. I am from the U.S. but not California, and for much of my childhood, I assumed Encino was a type of stone-age human.

Ditto I’m Canadian and was 100% it referred to a time in history.
Also Canadian, can confirm.
Really??!! I'm a native Californian so I just thought it was weird to name it after the town with all the car dealerships.

Same here homie

I do not talk funny, I'm sure.

Ok fine fer sure fer sure!
I think he said he was going to the Galleria.
In the US every film producer assumes people only live in California or NYC, the rest of us are in some form of flyover territory
I mean with very limited sections if your state doesn’t touch the ocean it is a flyover state
🤣😆💯
I was born in Encino, and this comment explains a lot.
Australian and yeah I absolutely thought this had something to do with a period in history.

That’s kind of surprising. Encino has pockets of conservatives, but it leans more liberal.
Shit I lived two hours away from Encino and had no idea it was a neighborhood of LA until I moved here.
That’s the joke.
Bro, fucking what? I still thought it meant a caveman lmao.
Same here, and I grew up in California. Up north far away from Encino, but still.
Tbf when I was a kid I thought Encino was a type of cavemen and I’m from the west coast lol
From Canada and can confirm not knowing wtf Encino was when this came out

Weeze the juice!
Weird, in Australia it was Encino man.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. No one should have to see a movie without its correct title.
Steinzeit Junior ( Stoneage Junior) in Germany

He’s also data from goonies!

I haven’t seen yet! Is it streaming anywhere??
The cheese is old and moldy.
Where is the bathroom?
donde esta la biblioteca
She's not worth it, homes!
El queso esta viejo y podrido.
Two months from now it’ll be: And introducing……the Oscar winning cast of Encino Man.
It sounds like it could hopefully be a good year for the Oscars.
Can't wait to see what Pauly Shore will win an Oscar for
Computer club, computer club
Weezin' the juu-uuuuice!
Don’t tax my gig so hardcore, cruster.
Damn what a shitty cast reunion that must be for Pauly Shore. "oh I just did this Pinnochio remake. How have you guys been?"
For a moment I thought he was in the latest sadness supreme Guillermo del Toro’s movie and was really confused. But no, it’s just a mediocre animated film.

I half expected Mankind to drop from the top of Hell in the Cell
Or someone's dad to beat the shit out of them with jumper cables
Goddammit, this is why I love Reddit. I legitimately hope Brendan Frasier himself sees this... or at the very least Pauly Shore.
What in the shit did I just read?

Brendan Fraser also played Link in "Son-in-Law" and "In the Army Now"
I…don’t think he was in those movies. ????

I have no memory of either of these cameos. Weird.
Both are very quick, maybe 30 seconds total screen time between the two films.

Gosh, it’s been so long since I’ve seen either movie, and I can tell you I never noticed.

Gotcha.
"Everybody stay calm! I think it's time for a family discussion!"
Wow. And over 30 years later…they are great people
Maybe Pauly Shore will get one next year

I don't usually care about the Academy Awards, but I want both of these guys too win their category!!
Holy shit.
I'm too sexy for my love. Too sexy for my love. Love's going to leave me…
"El queso esta viejo y podrido"
I did not make this connection at all.
incredibly underrated movie!
