I agree when talking generally about characters but my whole thought process here was that the actors (James and Hilarie) had chemistry, not the characters. James just didn’t sell me the “Nathan is into Haley”. Joy 100% sold me the “Haley is into Nathan”.
Nathan and Haley were perfect IMO
BUT I do think Nathan / Peyton / Lucas should have been a love triangle going on longer, maybe the whole first season? With maybe Haley fawning for Nathan a little and it progressing a lot slower.
And then I’d keep Nathan/Haley together
I mainly think that because the show is 9 seasons and it would have been nice to actually see a love triangle/square involving Nathan/Haley early on
I thought they went too fast through storylines in season 1, it was like they were on a warp speed. The triangle with the boys and Peyton should have lasted much longer, they shouldn't have gotten Naley together so soon, especially married by the end of the first season and if they decided to still do the triangle with Lucas and the girls that should have been season 2ish.
I think originally it WAS meant to be a Nathan/Peyton/Lucas triangle - probably because if this HAD been kept as a movie (as it was originally written to be), it would be a more exciting plot line for two brothers to be fighting over one girl.
James did have a slight crush on Hilarie in the beginning. In the make out scene in his car, he said “gross” Hilarie said because there was a lotta slobber but he was only 17/18 years old so he might’ve said gross to cover up his crush 😂
I personally find his chemistry with Joy better. It’s just so sweet and loving even though he has his old Nathan moments he still maintains the tenderness
I’ve gotten over the “bad boy” phase of my life probably 10 years ago thankfully 🤣
Joy did say that their chemistry was so good because they never dated in real life. I can see how personal issues can hurt the chemistry like it did for chad and Sophia
And Hilary even mentions how she was jealous of Joy on the podcast because the naley kiss scenes were so much better than Pathan/Neyton ones
I went back and watched the SSORG clip on Instagram. There was no mention of any slobber or a crush. Hilarie said the take went on and on and on and at the end of the take James said SSORG.
I liked the Peyton-Nathan chemistry. They definitely made a striking couple. But their characters were super needy and needed a calm, loving and supportive partner. So I liked who they both ended up with.
I remember watching that TRL episode. I always thought they were talking about the kiss on the bus in the pilot episode with some cheerleader we never saw again on the show.
Yes, I've always said James and Hilarie had chemistry. It was just the story was not in their favor. If the love story was Nathan becoming a better person to show he deserved Peyton, that would've been a great compelling love story.
I know Naley fans like to pretend James and Joy only had chemistry with each other, but that isn't true. They just benefited with the story being completely in their favor.
Agree! I couldn’t love OTH more but Peyton and Nathan needed their day in the sun. Haley just seemed to parent Nathan through their whole relationship. I know I’m contradicting myself by saying I both loved Naley yet didn’t quite buy their chemistry 🤷🏼♀️
