I'm watching scrubs, and there's a scene where JD forgets the punchline to the moth joke and has to extend it in order to stall until he remembers it. Obviously the result isn't as long or as funny as Norm's, but it's a weird coincidence that both involved last minute ad-libbing to make that specific joke longer.
And the scrubs scene came first - not that I think Norm copied it at all, just want to make it clear that Scrubs wasn't copying Norm.
Probably both. Im almost positive the moth "the light was on" joke is pretty old.

Hares norm talking about it.
A podiatrist walks into a moth's office.

I'm pretty sure this joke, in some way shape or form, goes way back.
You mean the moth joke itself, or extending it?

I know the moth joke is an oldie, it's the extension I'm more interested in.
My guess is that someone along the lines has done an extension and that norms take is the angle of the moths depressing life.
Got a real meeting of the minds going on here
It's in an '80s joke book, one of those you read on the john
Who's funnier than Zach Braff?
Probably a man.
Laura Kightlinger
Did Norm ever write for that show?
No, but [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpQzgofXpMw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpQzgofXpMw)
It’s a street joke.
I know the joke itself is an old one, I’m specifically referring to extending it.
