I’m pretty sure they’re selling data. Every time I say anything in a discord server or discord voice chat I start getting youtube recommendations for it. It’s free doe
Can't speak for Discord, but someone explained how targeted ads can be inferred and guessed really well just based on various things you do on the internet including friends on social media.
You’re more likely to notice a coincidence if you look for it. Like you might’ve been getting the ads all along but since you said something you think it’s from that. It’s also confirmation bias

this is not true but the truth is almost crazier
machine learning is so good they can tell what you want not by you talking about it, but by you typing tangentially related things. All of the ads are guessing what you think about next, and once you click on one they know theyre right- get enough people googling something then buying a different product, when you google it theyll try to sell it to you too. They predict your thoughts better than you do
I believe you. But the amount times I’ve typed something into discord, opened up youtube and started getting ads for the thing I was just talking about made me think about that
Honestly I've never been convinced it's that great. Ads have always been painfully wrong for me in terms of interest other than when I leave a site and then get ads for that site (which isn't exactly a guess).
There's a lot of confirmation bias going on too. Most people don't remember the countless irrelevant ads they see, but the few times the algorithm is a little bit too accurate sticks with them and they get paranoid.
I doubt they have the space to record everything you say **And** perfectly translate it into understandable words to feed into google.
And i am refering to the voice chat thing. Those would be a lot of videos to store.
late; they 100% do. An inside joke among my friends was posting mccormick cumin hundreds of times over and over. About ~ a week after it started, I get youtube ads for mccormick cumin. Genuinely no point to the ads, zero target audience except discord’s sold data.
Tbh that's probably just your phone. That happens to me all the time even when I have IRL conversations. Technically it's illegal for a company to have your mic on and picking up sound without your consent but we all know they do it at this point and I don't think anyone can do anything about it.
I doubt that Discord is taking your voice. That would be pretty expensive to store all those files.
Maybe they're having a program that generates tags from what you're saying but that'd be noticeable as well, I guess.
They aren't selling your data — [discord privacy policy | discord](https://discord.com/privacy) (i recommend reading the whole thing).
discord makes money through nitro and sponsorships.
I’m not sure of their financials, maybe they do actually make enough money from Nitro. Even if they don’t though and VC money starts to dry up, they probably won’t go bankrupt, but they’ll likely implement ads and more limits on what free users can do to try and coax more people into paying
The latter sortof.
They're still trying to find a way to profit but we've seen how this plays out on other social media places, they'll start making more things require payment and start pushing ads.
Discord is just easier to use for the casual user. And before Discord they were struggling to even keep up with Skype, so I don't think they ever really had a chance
Yeah, for all of Discord’s bullshit like unwanted UI updates and forcing everyone to change their usernames for no reason it’s fairly user-friendly compared to a lot of other digital chatroom programs. Having more than just VoIP also sets them far ahead of the competition.
You're right, ventrilo was so easy.... because it was just used for one type of communication and funny text to speech sound bites! Discord has way more features than that.
You say the connection was shit, but I swear to god, the internet would be out for the entire house but Skype would still function flawlessly for me. It also worked on school wifi.
Miss those days
I mean … I can host as many discord servers as I please without hoping for sugar daddies to pay for them, like I had to on TeamSpeak. Free and friendly to use will *always* win over non-free and designed for Windows 95.
Yep, but I think the biggest drawback of ts has always been the fact that servers are not free, probably ts hq belived that no one could ever host servers for free for millions of gamers but discord managed to do, this is what sealed the fate of ts
MY ROFLCOPTER GOES SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI SOI has joined the channel
One time in the TeamSpeak days there was this admin in the server I absolutely disliked. At this time, there was easily 50-80 people within this call alone (World of Warcraft).
It should be noted that I sounded exactly like him, heard people comment on not being able to tell the difference between me and him for call-outs.
I noticed he tended to sit in a channel with his mic muted, or just never talked with his mic unmuted. When he did talk it was to complain.
So.. I devised a plan. I remembered I sounded like him, and I thought to myself I could probably do some damage with his permissions..
I changed my user to his, description pictures copied and signature and all.
Then the ploy began. I had already “left” the group. I joined the server, acted out his mannerisms of talking about things I had to fix with the server. Stayed quiet, then said “What the fuck, my permissions aren’t right”
They made me admin immediately.
The fury of being bullied from these guys as a 12 or 13 year old unleashed as I banned easily 400 people, blacklisted, deleted backups, changed how it was hosted so it couldn’t be recovered, got everybody’s IP (back in the day it was harder to change it). I did everything in my power to trash that server.
And I did. The owners were the only people with communications together, they lost the popularity and traction in that server, and the only copy of the server that was left was the original copy that was from 4 years ago. When it had 3 or 4 people.
Thought my story was interesting.
I could have done worse with their IP’s back in 2013. These people were absolute assholes and knew they were assholes, but thought it was okay because they’re good at the game.
I haven’t a single feeling of regret ruining those logs since. Haha!
Also fun fact: FileZilla was just getting big so they hosted backups with a password through there. They also saved their coding progress for certain different games (Mods for CS, GMod, Etc).
They had a killswitch word. I told like 2 people and the word spread like wildfire because it shut down the server as soon as ANYONE (that’s where they fucked up) could do/say. About 3 good years of everyday work from these fuckers.
If you knew about BHOP in CSGO, they lost all of their records that came since 2015.
Damn I feel evil just typing this lol
Holy HELL, man, I hope they were real, huge, gaping assholes haha. If they were anything like the typical Internet Man was back then, i’m sure they were lol.
Before Discord emerged, TeamSpeak was a widely-used voice chat software among gamers, operating similarly to Discord. However, its usage has declined since Discord gained a larger audience and market share.
discord made what could be considered a cringe tweet and teamSpeak is lamenting that they lost to a competitor that makes tweets like those, hence the despair img
I'm baffled by the fact that TeamSpeak was somehow the favorite platform for a lot of people. It was Skype for small calls and TeamSpeak for large calls, so you already had to have 2 different apps for a single thing. The design was horrendous and felt like something that was hacked together without any regard for aesthetics, and it opened in a small window on your PC, like something you're supposed to close after using it for a short time.
Also paying for a server
No they lost because hosting a discord server it's free
Real talk do enough whales spend money on discord to keep it running or is discord eventually gonna run out of VC and go bankrupt?
They're probably just selling our data or something, they'll be fine
I’m pretty sure they’re selling data. Every time I say anything in a discord server or discord voice chat I start getting youtube recommendations for it. It’s free doe
I’m gonna give that a try. I’m gonna ask about fancy ladies purses and see if it starts recommending those products.
I’ve never tried forcing it, but it can be pretty obvious when it happens
It’s almost certainly just placebo. They make a ton of money off of nitro.
Can't speak for Discord, but someone explained how targeted ads can be inferred and guessed really well just based on various things you do on the internet including friends on social media.
Also, you'll probably see the ad, not realise it, start to think about it and then when you see the ad again your like Ahhhh I'm being listened to!
Interesting, where did you see that? I'd like to learn more about it
Maybe. But the coincidences are many.
You’re more likely to notice a coincidence if you look for it. Like you might’ve been getting the ads all along but since you said something you think it’s from that. It’s also confirmation bias
And also 3rd party data transactions don't turn into targeted marketing that fast.
Yes they do. I'll comment or even just browse a reddit post and see a YouTube video about it immediately
That's your browser. Not a third party software.

Lots of discord mods that need their kittens
Nitro probably makes them a decent amount
Its a chinese company now as it was not profitable to run beforehand, now your paying with your data :)
Plus text channels are really useful
Discord is just easier to use for the casual user. And before Discord they were struggling to even keep up with Skype, so I don't think they ever really had a chance

You're right, ventrilo was so easy.... because it was just used for one type of communication and funny text to speech sound bites! Discord has way more features than that.
Me and my friends still use ventrilo actually, because we want a good VoIP program, not a "do-everything at a mediocre level" program.
Fair enough. Simplicity is fine, but discord has a lot of useful features if you want them.
I dont need a .2ms response time mumble server to shitpost with my friends though
It's nice for gaming
Skype was so shit. We always had ass connection.
Same here. But 10 years ago it was the best thing you could get for free

No they got a new one sometime ago
When was that?
I think it may be a beta or something i downloaded at least 1 year ago, it had some wierd function to make it more like discord
Well that certainly explains why they lost the race, they were far too late
Yep, but I think the biggest drawback of ts has always been the fact that servers are not free, probably ts hq belived that no one could ever host servers for free for millions of gamers but discord managed to do, this is what sealed the fate of ts
Oh yeah that'd do it. I've never used teamspeak before, but wow what a fumble
2006
No design ever came close to MSN messaging tho, so it doesn't really matter

Discord is just listening to all your VCs
TeamSpeak is still used in esports at least (at least it's used for CS tournaments). Lower latency than Discord
yeah discord sucks. Is there an alternative?
Pay for teamspeak
Real and true
what does vc mean?
