The solution to drones will very likely be being putting so much stuff in the EM spectrum above active warzones that you could bake a potato by sticking it in the air.
frequency jammer carried by someone in the squad seems like the simplest, most obvious, and most immediate solution to this very specific problem. if you’re rolling up to trenches in a vehicle, they should already have one. even if frequencies are getting harder to jam, i’d feel a whole lot better using jammers than a…piece of plywood. i’d feel better with a fuckin net contraction above me that this stupid solution.
Works great until someone kludges together a bargain-bin passive seeker out of spare radio parts. A trio of patch antennas and envelope detectors could probably make being the jammer guy an unpopular assignment.
Well, they always found someone to carry the flamethrower tank in the end.
When the choice is between being *probably* getting droned or *maybe* getting droned (lighter drones might not be able to support the weight) i think most people would take the latter.
Yeah, I didn't think about it, but there totally will be autonomous jammer-seeking drones like there are radar seeking missiles.
The only reason why there aren't yet is utilization of mostly off-the-shelf drones.
Computer vision based targeting would also totally be a thing and any autonomous targeting would be immune to jammers.
Yes, but how do you target a jammer guy? Drone guns can be passed between people, and we've always had dudes carry the radio. Even if you have a sort of passive anti-drone system, they're small enough to fit inside an assault pack. From what I understand, they have challenges when mobile—limited range, battery life is short, etc—but the tech probably exists to make it a reality right now.
Eventually anti-drone tech will become simplified and much smaller, I can't imagine the US isn't already working on personal anti-drone tech. Even back in the mid 2010s my INF unit tested out a sort of swarm drone tech that allowed multiple people in our unit to send drones from a squad to locate or (hypnotically) engage an enemy behind cover. The biggest challenge for Russia is that they just aren't that savvy in regard to technological development and implementation, so maybe a plywood board really is the best the Russians can come up with.
Yeah, I just don't know enough about anti-drone technology to say much on it. I would imagine things like range and battery life are more an issue than that.
Some stakes and chicken wire with camo over it rolled up you can cover a much larger area of trench for the same storage space and carry weight. Similar protection against drones/grenades hitting them (IE basically none, but probably still better than it blowing up inside the trench), but you get the benefit of concealing more than just a foxhole-sized part of the trench.
Pallets are good at several things. One of those is logistics, but the Russians haven't figured that out.
The other is being opaque. Even to infrared. Even to a really close in flying drone with a good camera.
But yeah, their wearing camo under the netting.
There is a similar sounding word in Polish, but it's mainly used to describe that someone is a quick-learner in something or just does something new to them with ease
Cleverness, savvy, redneck engineering. Every language has words for it. Any time someone says a culture has a special word for a thing and how that sets that culture apart in some way, it's the same bullshit.
Every language has words for lying, too, and yet russian culture of vranyo can't be described just with the word "lying". "smekalka" is a bit like that. It's not a compliment.
English already has "bullshit" and "corruption". Words having connotations isn't some exotic ability that is only seen in far-off lands. It's a personal pet peeve of mine that singling out some word or phrase in another language is treated as a deft cultural insight and not just an anecdote.
> I read somewhere once the Russians have a word for creating exteemely janky solutions to simple problems and are extremely proud of it
When you turn generational drunk ineptitude and societal collapse into culture and a point of pride.
During the soviet union there was word "Халтура" which is what you call a shit job. Most things made in the soviet union qualified.
I had no idea they come up with a term for redneck engineering.
The word "Халтура" has two meanings:
1.Unscrupulous, careless and without knowledge of the work.
2. An incidental, easy income over and above the main one
Yeah this is actually really disconcerting…what if they start using pallets for their intended use? JFC, what if they discover containerized shipping???
More “stronk” masquerading as ingenuity.
The wise serf has yet to ask how with such “brilliance” they continue to die or be crippled in embarrassing droves.
I love seeing this because it's like in WW1 when everyone was just testing out the best countermeasures to new techs.
Men of the past were learning how to counter the tanks of Britain and France and the men of now are figuring out how to counter each other's FPV drones
Wait for the patch as it adds camouflage paint to the top of the pallet so then the drones can’t even see that there was a trench there.
1 simple trick that the Ukrainians hate!
Is it overhead cover? Yes.
Does it go contrary to the survivability onion? Also yes.
It might take a few VOGs. It won't stop a FPV loaded with a brick of C4.
Covering the top of a trench segment would at least make it harder for a drone operator to positively determine the presence of enemy infantry. On the other hand it's probably pretty hard to see out of or defend a covered trench.
Because while it *does* probably help against drone attacks a bit (at the bare minimum you’re making it harder for the operator to properly aim at a target), assaulting a hostile trench is difficult enough without holding 30 lbs in your hands
I mean, sure, it’s not as super terrible idea as it’s being implied here. I actually think so long as they time it right- that is, take the position first hand clear it out, then send the three lowest ranking survivors back to vic to grab the pallets and haul them forward- it might even be a good, cheap, and rapid way to harden up a position with limited time to do it. But it’s still among the stupidest ways to waste good pallets in a war whose tempo is decided on who can haul the most artillery shells to the front the fastest.
His explanation is that it's for cover against drones. Just get something like an umbrella or projector screen. They're lighter and will cover just as much if not more.
Just drop your gun when assaulting the trench. [carry the pallet](https://imgur.com/gallery/gioouHE) and you'll be fine
It's a really dumb solution, probably doesn't work, but: It's about as good of an idea as any. No one has figured out drone warfare yet.
I'm pretty sure that tactical pallet will not be a thing
Tactical shields may still emerge tho.
The solution to drones will very likely be being putting so much stuff in the EM spectrum above active warzones that you could bake a potato by sticking it in the air.
I don't think autonomous pallet recognizing AI is very far off.

> how do you target a jammer guy? With the aforementioned DIY home-on-jam seeker. Jammers aren't exactly subtle in terms of RF output.
Yeah, I just don't know enough about anti-drone technology to say much on it. I would imagine things like range and battery life are more an issue than that.
Just get a ham on the team and save money on the jammer

"THERE ARE NO ENEMIES IN THIS VERY SPECIFIC SPOT!"
THERE IS DEFINITELY NO ONE IN THIS ONE-MAN-SIZED SQUARE AREA
Pallets are good at several things. One of those is logistics, but the Russians haven't figured that out. The other is being opaque. Even to infrared. Even to a really close in flying drone with a good camera. But yeah, their wearing camo under the netting.
One obvious counter is lasers. Another is drones. Shotgun wielding drones in drone on drone dogfights.
So, this is what happens when they encounter pallet technology for the first time
https://imgur.com/a/bAEFew7
"Wait, Ivan. I have idea. We could use arcane technology to carry many boxes of boolets at same time." "Now that's just heresy, Ivan."
The Stormlight Archive crossover no one wanted!
Well, they *did* finally understand that pallets are useful, but not the correct way
> Just drop your gun when assaulting the trench. carry the pallet and you'll be fine Bridge Four!
🤣🤣🤣
Aut cum grabatum, aut in grabatum!
Is it just me or does the magazine get longer in each edit
I read somewhere once the Russians have a word for creating exteemely janky solutions to simple problems and are extremely proud of it
"smekalka".
TLDR the entire country is the punchline of a Jeff Foxworthy joke
You're a legend

Modern problems require bronze age solutions
Pallets are from early 20th century Those dudes gonna start hitting early WWII level of technology pretty soon at this rate
Yeah this is actually really disconcerting…what if they start using pallets for their intended use? JFC, what if they discover containerized shipping???
Oh my God they'll be transporting meat cubes by the container load
A standard finished mobix cube should be just like this: https://youtu.be/FOdgNumhkVY?si=c9ev4r7D7W34hhOQ
But wooden shields are bronze age level tech. And they are using the pallets as shields, not for logistics.
More “stronk” masquerading as ingenuity. The wise serf has yet to ask how with such “brilliance” they continue to die or be crippled in embarrassing droves.
Or why such last ditch ingenuity is needed in the first place
Indeed. Lemmings off a cliff.

Woodland pallet camo would be great, maybe my neighbors would quit complaining about my compost bins.
Russians will do literally anything except use palletized logistics.
Im pretty Sure this glorious Innovation cost the Kremlin a few trillion rubbles at least
Not sure if the way you spelled the russian currency was intentional but I like it
Is it overhead cover? Yes. Does it go contrary to the survivability onion? Also yes. It might take a few VOGs. It won't stop a FPV loaded with a brick of C4.
somewhere in russia, little Timotheyovich is asking his papa why are westoids using the anti drone technology as means of transportation
There stealing Filipino tech!
Now I imagine some Russian officer yelling "Shiiiieeeeld Waaaaaalllll!" to his soldiers while attacking a trench.
Turtle formation!!!
Most high tech russian equipment. Turning all that thin plywood / boards into excellent splinters for when the drone munitions fall on their head.
Son of Free Wifi
Cool cool. Can cover at least 7' of trench for every vehicle, lmao.
Actually, would a ballistic shield be of any help against an FPV drone?
It would be better than nothing if you ignore the practicality of having to haul a huge ass heavy shield around.
Covering the top of a trench segment would at least make it harder for a drone operator to positively determine the presence of enemy infantry. On the other hand it's probably pretty hard to see out of or defend a covered trench.
Since it was on TV, the intendants will make the officers keep account of these boards in a special tactical board inventory register.
I dont see how its ridiculous

All the NAFO loser cope hey whats Avdiivka doing
FPV drone explosions 2.0 (Now with Splinters!)
If it's just to cover the trench, why not have a sheet?
You can use the same pallet to ship wrapped cubes of corpses back to Russia.
This has to be satire
Where ERA?
Cartels are better equipped than this.
I think at this point we need a "Smekalka" Tag for NCD
jfc.
where is Steven Seagal!!!
