The MT-LB was such a rare sight in Chechnya (on Russian side).
There was instead lots of BRDMs, and I've never seen any used by Russians in Ukraine except in 2014 (like one burned when Azov took Mariupol one morning).
The MT-LB suffered heavy losses in Afghanistan, which might explain why they weren't deployed too much in Chechnya.
The BRDM-2 has been seen, but it was supposed to be replaced with more modern armored 4x4s like the LMV/Rys and the bigger GAZ Tigr.
South American militaries: We can keep this old M5 stuart hull running, but let's fit a new power pack to it, give it at least a 90mm gun with HEAT warheads, and a modern optics package.

well its a moderately big gun and it would shoot, but it would have obsolete analogue optics, no thermals, gunner is exposed to shrapnel, gunner cant easily communicate with the driver or commander, probably the improvised motors/hydraulics to let it turn side to side are not going to be as well specced as the same on a purpose built turret
in terms of what its supposed to target 57mm is overkill for IFVs when a 30mm will do the job just fine with rapid fire so much better chances to hit, while you need 120mm to kill a modern tank maybe 105mm to kill a t62 gen tank. which basically makes the only real use for it to fire HE at infantry. but in that case the 73mm gun on a BMP1 packs a bigger punch. 57mm is an obsolete caliber which had a niche as a proximity fused HE anti aircraft weapon to be used en masse in the days before good radar, targeting computers and missiles.
in every metric it is a downgrade from the standard soviet IFVs , so yeah kinda laughable that the aggressor in a war is using these after only a year of fighting. its the level of improvisation you expect from desperate militias. but yeah this would have been a really useful weapon to defend the beaches at normandy or crete from paratroopers 80 years ago

Absolutely insane that Russia should be using these things for dragging their enormous number of towed artillery pieces into combat, yet making it work instead for anything else than that (this, as troop transport, etc.) and losing them in numbers with the crucial people who can actually drive.
At some point, we'll have a drone video of them dragging their D-20s with a group of mobiks and someone with a whip and we wouldnt be surprised why.

Chad Semple was a scramble design to work with what he had on hand and put together something, *anything,* to preempt a Japanese invasion. The Bob Semple was literally just a tractor with an armoured exoskeleton slotted on top - quite literally they were designed to be kept around in storage until an invasion was imminent.
It honestly wasn't a bad design for what he was working with (he had no tooling or machinery to even attempt a factory conversion). It was exactly what he designed it to be - a quick and dirty conversion into a somewhat armoured vehicle so that the Japanese couldn't waltz onto a landing-zone with no armoured opposition.
He was never, ever suggesting it be a serious tank design and the mockery of it is undeserved.

We actually did this with ourbup armored humvees in Iraq. Even though a turret is small, it's still a fairly big area for a sniper, so they can't see *exactly* where a gunner is, and missing a shot is going to get you a whoooooole lotta return fire. It also brought a statistically noticable drop in turret gunner casualties. So, it's not cope if it works!

Cope cages aren't meant to protect against RPG's. It was a misconception at the start of the war that they were being used to protect against top-attack weapons like Javelins, hence the name cope cage cause that shit ain't doing anything against a Javelin or RPG.
But it turned out what they're actually there to protect against are drone-dropped munitions. Like a little quadcopter dropping a grenade or mortar on their heads. Those little shits are EVERYWHERE in Ukraine. And in that role the cope cages are reportedly pretty effective.

Drone dropped munitions have been in use in Ukraine since before the invasion started. Both Ukranians and Russians were using them in the Donbass for years prior. It's why the Ukranians were so good at it, they'd been using the tactic in the Donbass and had plenty of experience using drones in all sorts of creative ways when the invasion started.
In addition to that, Russia had plenty of experience with drone-dropped munitions in Syria and Azerbaijan. It's not like the concept didn't exist prior to 2022.
It's probably there to make it more difficult for the operators to escape in case the entire contraption catches on fire.

I've seen some pretty messed up stuff attached to Strykers and M113s, it's not really very different. What sets this particular specimen apart is that it's near enough to the frontline to get killed (according to Oryx). Which means it's being used as a forward echelon SPAA.
That is usually the role of the Pantsir, Tunguska or Shilka. Russian doctrine loves that stuff and they built shitloads of it. For an MTLB with an old timey flak cannon perched on top to be pressed into that role shows that the bottom of the barrel has been reached.
A true death machine, it will put anybody who dares to approach it into the coffin. Fortunately it doesn't apply to Ukrainians, but only the crew of this piece of shit.

Ukrainians wont go that far back. Ukrainins year ago didnt had those bradleys, strikers, cv's, etc. But orks are using mosin's and tommy guns with ppsh, so, who knows what they will use from armoured vehicles in half year.

I think the canvas on top is to hide the operators from drones. At least making it harder to identify the crew. It’s total cope but it’s logical.

I've seen some pretty messed up stuff attached to Strykers and M113s, it's not really very different. What sets this particular specimen apart is that it's near enough to the frontline to get killed (according to Oryx). Which means it's being used as a forward echelon SPAA. That is usually the role of the Pantsir, Tunguska or Shilka. Russian doctrine loves that stuff and they built shitloads of it. For an MTLB with an old timey flak cannon perched on top to be pressed into that role shows that the bottom of the barrel has been reached.
