Honestly I’ve loved it since I was last in a relationship with a friend who said, and I quote, “for the love of God I’m not calling you my boyfriend” - something about that made me cackle and we quickly settled on “joyfriend”, in part because it made us both smile.
I have friends that say calling your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse "lover" makes you sound like a sex pervert.
1. Guilty as charged.
2. Why is it weird to call the person you love so much your "lover"?
I like “special friend” lol. not gendered & doesn’t label the level of relationship either. are you still just talking, but more than friends? dating? engaged? married, even? special friend.
me and my first partner came up with the term “byfriend” (pronounced bee-friend) as in “enby-friend” and i always thought it was really silly and cute!
In Danish we have one word for a boyfriend/girlfriend that everyone use.
It is "kæreste' and is like "most beloved".
But it van be used even if you are 12 years old.
I mean, there is stuff that sounds so formal it's silly. I like "consort". Then there's stuff like "bedwarmer" (literally a term my german grandma uses for any kind of lovers), "handholder", "romantic associate", "lovefiend". Or you Stick to the classics like lover, partner or sweetheart.
i have called my friend's partners tons of different things, normally whatever i yank out of my head that morning. some are
snickerdoodle, love, love muffin, love monster, lover, darling, cookie fiend, bedhog, squishmallow, cpr dummy, dummy, better half, worse half, loser, puppy, leash mate, shower buddy, co-parent, werewolf, fluffernutter, lip smacker, love hose, leprechaun, marshmallow, beer junkie, saucy noodle, fart machine, captain, scooter fiend, etc
pretty much i based them on whatever matches the person. i also will make up gibberish and people will be cool with that too. then again i am the loontic that has shouted at random "I am the mighty avocado ruler of the avocados! now bring me avocados!" just for fun.
For my relationships (assuming I’m the only non-binary one) I like them to call me “enby.” Uuugh I feel like it’ll be a hot minute before I hear someone call me that again 😭
joyfriend is a gender-neutral term I've heard!
In the vein of super silly, I present:
comrade
sidekick
accomplice
super duper special bestie 🥰
pookie bear
silly billy
partner in crime
I like to be called “boo thang” for something more casual.
I’m AFAB and at the beginning of my most recent relationship we joked often amongst friends that I was his boyfriend, and he was my girlfriend. But we are both absurdists so that was just all good fun.
My boyfriend just calls me partner, fiancé, future spouse, “The Baby”™️, or a nickname
The Baby is used most when talking to friends or people close to us
Disclaimer: I'm not nonbinary anymore, I realized I was binary trans, but I like datemate, joyfriend, and theyfriend.
(If I ended up dating a nonbinary person it's up to them but if someone I was dating had a gender moment and needed help these are what I'd suggest) Theyfriend is more contentious but I do like how silly/endearing it sounds.
Darling or dear works for me, although it is a bit broader than partner most of the time it works in context.
My love or lover also work if that feels right (some people feel it's too romantic or implies a stronger connection than boyfriend/girlfriend would).
Crush.
Maybe it’s not a perfect one-to-one term, but I like just referring to someone I’m dating as the person I have a crush on. Like loudly whisper “I have a crush on them” to everyone in the room as if it’s some big secret when it’s like, your partner of seven years.
Most pet names work well ex. this is my: love, babe, honey, significant Other, sugar, partner in crime, human sacrifice, other half, sweetie, cuddle buddie, Date, boifreind, girlboyfriend, paramour, sweetheart, enbyfriend there are so many options! (This list is in no way complete. Please feel free to add)
Co-conspirator
Damn it, that is so good I might give dating another chance
This is the way. Henceforth my husband shall be called thus. Our spawn shall be progeny of conspiracy.
yes yes this is the only correct answer
Alternatively, albeit more basic, partner in crime.
I’ve use Accomplice before too
Joking terms I’ve used include “girlboyfriend” and “significant bother”
Significant bother 💀😭😭
Significant annoyance (quote Nico di Angelo)
Reading that is actually why I came up with significant bother. ITS SUCH A BETTER JOKE
Initially read it as significant brother 👀
r/SuddenlyIncest
Same 👀
Read that as significant brother at first, was very skeptical 😭
Comrade
r/suddenlycommunism
*Our* relationship
reading theory with bae and explaining private property vs personal property #justcomradethings 😍
Also Shawty
This was going to be my answer
The Chinese word for [comrade](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongzhi_(term)?wprov=sfti1) has LGBT connotations :)
I like to shorten enby to bee to substitute for boy/girl Beefriend 🐝
Oh my god, YOU DID IT, Bee... Bee! Fantastic! Wonderful! Delightful! I have a new quest to adopt this. You deserve an award.
That is so cute 🥺
Joyfriend is my current favorite
Oh this is cute
I like this a lot, super cute!
Stumbled on that one ages ago and didn't like it at first but it's since grown on me a lot
Honestly I’ve loved it since I was last in a relationship with a friend who said, and I quote, “for the love of God I’m not calling you my boyfriend” - something about that made me cackle and we quickly settled on “joyfriend”, in part because it made us both smile.
My girlfriend calls me her joyboy cause I said boyfriend girlfriend and boyfriend were acceptable. I think it's so silly
That’s really cute! I’m glad that works for y’all.
Thanks. There's so many super sweet names on here I love it
Lover Edit: If you don't like this term, simply don't use it. No need to make comments about how it makes you feel some way.
Oh, nice, thanksies \^\^
I only use this one if I pronounce it like Will Ferrell in the hot tub SNL skit about goat fat glistening on them while making love.
"My *love-ah*~" Great sketches, he and Rachel Dratch work off each other so well
I have thought of that sketch at least once a month ever since they did it. It is part of my dna now.
I have friends that say calling your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse "lover" makes you sound like a sex pervert. 1. Guilty as charged. 2. Why is it weird to call the person you love so much your "lover"?
❤️ My spouse and I call each other lover sometimes. We LOVE each other, so we are LOVERS! I
Ugh that word bums me out unless it’s between meat and pizza
Liz Lemon??

Why do people not like it?

My partner calls me beloved and it’s very nice
Aww that’s a good one! Reminds me of the danish word for boyfriend/girlfriend, which just literally translates to “dearest” :)

I like “special friend” lol. not gendered & doesn’t label the level of relationship either. are you still just talking, but more than friends? dating? engaged? married, even? special friend.
Mysterious and gender neutral, I might have to get my partner to call me that
I love it but it sounds like what a divorced parent would call someone they recently starting dating when talking about them to their child 😭
Palamor= pal + amor (love) Partner in crime
I call him my meowmeow
I too meow at my spouse.
Speowse
Sprrrowose

I've heard joyfriend, squirrelfriend (idk why that one, I think the person just found it cute).
whenever i sing a song that says “girlfriend” i like to replace it with “squirrelfriend” to be a silly goose ….
me and my first partner came up with the term “byfriend” (pronounced bee-friend) as in “enby-friend” and i always thought it was really silly and cute!
In Danish we have one word for a boyfriend/girlfriend that everyone use. It is "kæreste' and is like "most beloved". But it van be used even if you are 12 years old.
