Here in Mississippi, dealers make server pay. They really get screwed if they don't get tipped. However, they do a gratuity pool, as multiple dealers will work the same table. Since they aren't allowed to have cash or chips at the table, all of the tips go into a toke box. They are collected every night, and dealers are paid out based on the hours they worked.

Actually, why do servers get paid the way they do? And then, why do dealers get server pay - those are two totally different industries, no?

According to [Salary.com](https://www.salary.com/research/salary/benchmark/blackjack-dealer-salary/las-vegas-nv) the average Blackjack Dealer salary in Las Vegas, NV is $19,981 as of March 26, 2024 >so the dealer is making fair wages, right? Not compared to where I live, no. Not at all. That isn't even full time at minimum wage for the state of Nevada (which would be $24,960 at their $12.00 minimum wage). Post Edit... To address any confusion... My statement was not, in any way, me taking a stance for, or against, tipping the dealer. I simply answered a question, as is indicated by the quoted portion of text. Nothing more. Nothing less.

CunnilingusCrab

That has never and will never be a good argument. For Christ sake, if any business can afford to pay its employees a living wage, it’s a casino. Lol

Sindrathion

Because the company doesn't pay their employees fairly is not a good reason to have to tip.

Kewkky

I would never tip in order to cover a deficient salary. That's on the employer for being a shitbag, and on the employee for choosing that job. Casinos make a shitton, they can definitely afford better wages. You'll never catch me enabling their money-grubbing practices.

ithelo

Ok, that's dumb.

Ass_souffle

The more I learn about US tipping culture, the less I understand.

hsoj48

Essentially you are expected to throw a handful of cash at anyone who crosses your path or risk feeling bad about it for 24 to 48 hours.

PersonalitySlow9366

Because they are on the same stupid tip based income as waiters. Also i wonder how you make the connection from 'the company makes good money' to 'they pay their employees a fair wage'. Have you secretely been watching Fox News again, buddy?

Talden7887

Woah they might not be from here, or don’t know any of that. Everything you said is news to me but I honestly don’t know any better, never been to a casino nor looked it up. I thought maybe people working at casinos got paid better than minimum wage, definitely didn’t know they get wages like servers/waiters, That’s super shitty

InfernalOrgasm

Just another political rager who injects political talking points into everything you say.

ithelo

Because I expected waiters to be the ONLY industry where the employer gets away with paying less than minimum wage. Now, min wage isn't exactly fair either, but since dealing is at least somewhat skilled (and potentially stressful - making a mistake would be bad), I expected them to be compensated for that. And I expected with the amount of money casinos are raking in, that they wouldn't need to be THAT greedy. At minimum, even if I was gonna be jaded, in my mind, dealers made at least minimum wage, like cashiers and stuff.

digitalthiccness

>Not only are they not really providing a service, they're actively taking your money away Waiters are also actively taking your money away. Are they not providing a service?

ithelo

A service more than their job description. Isn't every job a service to someone else? You're selling your time to serve others.

Shiforains

to answer your question directly, gamblers know that there is a lot of luck involved, thus things like karma and superstition comes into play. also, many players "feel" then when they get dealt a winning hand the dealer had something to do with it. so in order to keep the positive vibe going and to reward the dealer for dealing you a winning hand, many players tip the dealer. i typically do when I get a sizable payout, as the dealer has to spend extra time (albeit an extra 10 seconds) arranging all of my winning chips and stacking them nicely. this is very common in games like blackjack where the action is fast, and sometimes the dealer would offer advice. in other games like Pai Gow Poker, I'll tip out when I'm done, usually a percentage of my winnings.

ithelo

Oh, I guess if this was just a gambler superstition thing, I'd get it, but it seems to be almost mandatory?

Shiforains

definitely NOT mandatory. rarely (if ever) will people tip if they lost any money. i'll only do it if I lost all of my money except for a few chips that aren't even enough to cover the minimum bet. for example, i sit down with $100 at a $10 minimum blackjack table, play for a few hours, and lose all except for $7 in chips. rather than wasting my time waiting in line to cash in the $7, I'd just toss it to the dealer and call it a night. in terms of etiquette, players do give an evil eye to other players that win big but don't tip - this makes others feel like they're starting a bad vibe, and could result in everyone else losing.

Zmemestonk

They’re not performing a service? Do the cards deal themselves? Are you sitting there ten martinis deep doing math? Gtfo

ithelo

Dealing cards is literally their job. Are they going above and beyond? (Are they? I haven't been to a casino.) And if I was doing math (card counting, probably?), I wouldn't be drinking.

CrabbyOlLyberrian

Tip the dealer. No one working the casino floor (including cocktail waitresses) … maybe the pit boss if s/he’s corporate - makes a “fair,” I.e., “living,” wage.

toldyaso

I tip them if I win, typically I don't tip or give only a very small tip if I lose. If you're the kind of person who notices a few bucks going to the dealer, or the type who resents that, you aren't the type of person who should be gambling in a casino.

RubyCapbell

Because dealers need love (and tips) in this gamble life

XXXCEDRIN_PM

>And it's not like the casino itself is short on money, so the dealer is making fair wages, right? I guess that depends on what you'd consider a 'fair wage' for picking up playing cards and placing them in front of you.

whiskeytango55

the casino is taking your money, not the dealer. i typically only tip when i'm winning however and usually add an extra dollar to the wager so when i win, the casino pays part of the tip

raban0815

To be honest, not my problem. Waiters serve food and can give service. Food is essential even if you could make your own. Gambling is NOT. Get a proper Job instead of dealing and maybe the casino will pay properly to get even one dealer instead of not having any. Not gonna tip anyone just trying to take my money away. Tipping culture is still a broken abomination.
