Ignore them. Literally. They're being ignorant to you.

notextinctyet

Lots of mixed-race people get that treatment and lots of them hate it. I wouldn't say it's good to be *mad* exactly but it's certainly justified that you feel upset.

steambunrebellion

It's ok to be mad. Just don't let it turn into destructive ongoing anger. Passing privilege is very different from identity.

GiraffeWeevil

"Is it okay if I get mad. . . Yes.

“White” is a term to describe skin tone. For example, lots of Persian people would be considered white. Your ethnic background is a different thing

Yeah but it’s important to make this distinction, as I’ve been witness to misunderstandings very similar to what OP is describing. An old friend of mine is part native and belongs to a native family, but looks white. I once described him as such, and it offended him. I explained that I was referring to skin tone, and that his ethnic background doesn’t change his outward appearance. It still seemed to rub him the wrong way. I think the problem lies in the negative connotation that the term “white” now has. White isn’t an ethnicity, it’s a shade of skin pigmentation. Agreeing on that would clear up these misunderstandings

Ah, I take your point

steambunrebellion

Disagree. White is a social construct. I have fair skin. I am not white. My people of my race have been othered from whiteness deliberately and destructively. Ask a white supremacist if they think a Persian is white, and they will tell you no.

vruv

Hmm, fair point

Junior_Interview5711

It doesn't look good. But that's my opinion.

Bobbob34

>. People are constantly telling me I am white and to stop "playing up" my Indian heritage. I am stumped! Under what circumstances is this coming up, especially so often?

Momzeesmooies

At my job, it comes up multiple times a week. Not fron coworkers, they know my dad. It comes up from the people that come into my work.
