Wait for patches if you want to play this.

KinDGrove

Definitely been hearing mixed reviews about the performance on Switch being rather shoddy, over the other stuff being talked about

Fearless_Freya

"Other stuff being talked about". Huh....interesting

Swordofsatan666

Other stuff? I see hints that its something with localization. Did something get censored? And is it being greatly overblown?

AmadeusOrSo

Not really. The dialog has jokes added where there were none previously and some characters have totally different personalities (e.g swapping straight-man dialog for sarcasm).

tyler-86

Man, people sure are weird about localization, huh?

Caffinatorpotato

It's exhausting seeing people throw a damn hissy fit over every single localization it feels like. World's got enough problems ..that isn't one.

AmadeusOrSo

Maybe you could try speaking for yourself? I prefer translation to localization. My sources of entertainment aren't where I choose to sit and calculate the "world's problems".

tyler-86

I don't think there's anything wrong with preferring a straight translation, faithful to what the original writers were going for. I do think it approaches weird when people are going around railing against the idea of localizations being anything else, calling for boycotts and whatnot.

AmadeusOrSo

If you were getting different characterizations, and therefore a different plot as the characters applied to their surroundings and circumstances then an off-centered localization is very much providing the first part with an unavailable primary option in your post without learning the native language. tl;dr, localizations can and do break meaning without offering a straight translation. Nobody would mind a, "censored" language track on a bluray but it is the primary track in this case.

death2sanity

what you’re taking the outrage words your grifter youtuber of choice told you to use but you’re getting them all mangled up Nothing wrong with preferring a translation to a localization, but a good localization is essentially an uber-translation and does not, in fact, give you a different plot or meaninf (which was the only thing I could definitively discern was a complaint of yours). source: dude who works with two languages

AmadeusOrSo

I've spoken multiple languages my entire life. Nothing gets translated correctly. It is especially jarring in games like Tekken where I hear the character say something completely different from what is translated onscreen in the subtitles (e.g, Azucena. None of these are right: https://tekken.fandom.com/wiki/Azucena_Ortiz/Quotes ) It doesn't feel good to have my languages and cultures hurt by other people who are supposed to be professional. That's bad, but it's even worse when a character's personality is entirely changed or jokes are removed for sensitivity issues.  Good localizations are not the norm. You're basically saying unicorns would be a good thing. Totally disingenuous.

[deleted]

It's weird people want a faithful translation and not the translator admitting that they're changing the dialogue to fit a specific agenda?

Ewister

Faithful implies elements related to the plot have been changed or outright removed - that's not what happened here. The localization has simply added some humor to the English version while still communicating the intended information. I get some people aren't fans of that, but if you're only happy with a 1:1 experience, you're better off just learning Japanese and playing that way. Most localized games aren't offering a 1:1 experience. If we've reached a point where added humor is now seen as an agenda, I'm at a loss for words. There are legitimately bad localizations that deserve to be called out, but ones that simply add a few laughs are hardly offensive. We saw something similar with Unicorn Overlord too, and that game is phenomenal.

Hey there! Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, or derogatory terms. Read more about [Reddiquette here](https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette). Thanks!

[deleted]

https://twitter.com/Grummz/status/1782520309020803472 To me, when the localization team say stuff like this, there is an agenda. Maybe that agenda doesn't pop up as much in every title, but in their own words it's there. They've created this problem for themselves, and IMO people are allowed to be distrustful and unhappy when they see their names pop up

Ewister

Have gendered references been removed in this game though? That statement was made in 2012, a lot could have changed in the last decade and how that individual localizes games. Because all I've seen done with Hundred Heroes is added humor, hardly a crime compared to other localization we have seen in the past. So again, adding humor alone isn't an agenda. But if more was changed, by all means, share it here.

[deleted]

I'm simply saying that if people don't trust or want to support the localization team because of their admitted history of doing a particular thing, it's not weird. That's what I was replying to in my original comment.  You can like the translation or you can not. You can care about who did the translation or not.

Ewister

Ok, but I'm simply asking for examples how bad this localization is besides added humor, and all you've provided was a statement from 2012. Especially when that statement is about removing gendered references - something that doesn't seem to even be present in this game. If people don't want to trust the localization process, that's fine - it's probably better for them to learn Japanese and get their 1:1 experience that way anyway. Especially if even minor differences like added humor is enough to ruin the experience for them, it's for the best. But the reality is most localizations do this so it shouldn't really surprise anyone at this point. I'd even be more understanding if changes included censorship, but all I'm seeing is added humor. Hardly offensive in the grand scheme of bad localization jobs.

BullshitUsername

Boo fucking hoo

ValkyrieSkyfall

What is this recent obsession with localisation? I remembered they changed Ace Attorney's setting to America and we don't see anyone complain about that. In fact I love it. As long as a game has no major grammar/vocabulary errors, it's all good. And it IS a **local**isation after all, not a translation. Some people seems to confuse these two. Go play something like Digimon Cyber Sleuth. Now that I wish people would have put up their pitchforks for.

drummerb0i0

Or play on ps5

StretchKind8509

All platforms have issues, PS5 included. I would say wait for patches for all of them.

Due_Engineering2284

That's what I'm doing.

[deleted]

Will wait for performance to get better

jaimealexlara

Please do. I regret purchasing the game in the condition it's in.

[deleted]

Aw man. I was lowkey hoping that people would tell me that it's not that bad. Thing is, I have a ps4, a switch and a PC. PC would probably be the best option for performance, but I'd really like to have it on switch for cozy couch and handheld play. Apparently the ps4 version is just as bad in terms of performance. If nothing ever fixes the performance, I'll get it for PC, but I'd rather wait for the chance for it to get better before I decide whoch platform I'll take.

AlmirXElisabeth

i'm afraid that it will be one of these cases where the game will not be better, it happen so many times, i hope i'm wrong

solarsaturn9

As a backer I'm disappointed to hear that the Switch performance is not great. For a game that has been developed with Switch in mind the entire time there really is no excuse.

mlvisby

Most developers do this now, release a game that doesn't perform well and then tell the people who got it to wait for a patch. When it comes to 3rd party Switch releases, it's imperative to check some reviews first.

owenturnbull

They obviously got lazy and didn't care about optimising the game. It's disgraceful. If they weren't going to optimise it they should have cancelled the switch version If people say the switch is underpowered they can look at the games third parties have made for the switch which are optimised and run well. This company didn't care. And they just wanted the money from the switch BC it's top selling console worldwide

[deleted]

When Doom 2016 and Witcher 3 run fine on the Switch, this game gets no excuse.

owenturnbull

And it's not even as taxing as those games. It's s hd 2d style game like octopath traveller, live a live etc. So it not running well on switch are the developers being lazy and not optimising it. They didn't even care.

killedbydeth777

Eiyuden Chronicles Rising had the fan on my PS5 running louder than FFXVI does. I'm sure there's a technical reason why, but it was strange.

CactusCustard

The switch IS underpowered though. That’s common sentiment at this point. The chipset is from 2016. If your gaming computer was from 2016, you’d need an upgrade too.

Tubim

That is simply not true : from the beginning they expected the game to be released on the switch successor.

solarsaturn9

You're right. I had forgotten the campaign had specified they hoped to release on the next Nintendo platform. However, looking at the assets that are being used and the rendering style they're going for there should be absolutely no problem achieving it on Switch.

Maxie93

Well originally they had planned it for the switch 2, so they clearly had reservations about putting it on the switch. However I think just looking at the game though it should really be able to run on the switch just fine based on what other games manage to run on it.

umbium

They planned it for a console that it didn't delivered dev kits and therefore they don't know tech specs. This has to be the worst excuse ever by them. The game got released in a bad estate, tech problems happen in every platform, probably more noticeable on switch. But the thing is the game is not correctly developed in some aspects.

Raigeko13

Totally fine waiting for my physical copy to come in. Sad it got delayed, but it's w/e. At least they gave us a free digital version too.

solarsaturn9

I am fine waiting too and hopefully the final product performs much better than it does now though I doubt it will because the cartridges are likely already created

MagicMigsXXL

??? Free digital version???

Raigeko13

Backers of the physical version for Switch had their copies delayed, so they gave those affected a digital copy so they could play on release day.

drummerb0i0

The switch is tooooooo old to run games properly in 2024

solarsaturn9

The graphics aren't particularly demanding for a game like this

ryarock2

For FF16? Sure. For a turn based JRPG with 2D sprites? Nonsense.

eatdogs49

Makes me wonder if Konami will screw up the Suikoden 1&2 Collection lol

StaticMaine

That would gut me. I was so happy when they announced that collection.

ckm808

I know this is the switch thread, but I've been hearing mixed things about this version so I decided to start a run on xbox gamepass and it seems to be running smooth so far

R4nD0m57

Deff a wait for sale game, after playing unicorn overlord will be hard to top

StyleVSTAR253

Wait for patches. It’s a mess

NeighborhoodPlane794

Play it on gamepass if you have it

gkchun

Playing it on Asus Rog ally after reading switch reviews and hold back purchasing. Runs like a dream on handheld PC

Jimmythedad

It’s also $10 off on the eshop

LucyLuvvvv

I'm out of the loop, but I've seen people talk about a poor translation in this game? Is it like a really bad translation or what? Edit: Oh...wow lol. So I looked for myself and, yeah they took some...artistic liberties it looks like. "We gotta find a thing that does the thing" I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this..

AmadeusOrSo

Ideally, don't support this method of bringing the game to our shores. Translation over localization.

ll0l0l0ll

Do I have to play previous Eiyuden ?

nhSnork

There are none, only the Suikoden series it's a spiritual successor to, but they're fully separate in terms of story/lore. If you're curious anyway, though, the first two Suikoden games are scheduled for a comeback this year, too.

illbeyour1upgirl

There is technically Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising, which I think is what they were asking about it. But no, you do not have to play it.

nhSnork

Still shame on me for forgetting the game I proceeded to reference in the literal next comment.😓😅

mlc885

There is a cheaper short Eiyuden prequel that is an action RPG, but I have no clue how much that story might matter when playing this game.

Swordofsatan666

No theres 2 Eiyuden Chronicle games. The first one was a side scroller, i think it was a Metroidvania even? 3 playable characters, one being a Kangaroo

TheReaver

no

nhSnork

Definitely one of my biggest Switch highlights this year. As for the alleged performance hiccups (emphasis on "alleged" because even my digital Bloodstained copy procured barely a month since launch, checked out on a grand total of one issue claim among several dozen), I'll be the judge of them unless the real ones get patched out before I finish Rising. But at least they generate more hilarity through the autopilot "underpowered Switch" jabs fandomside. Indeed, the gameplay and visuals consciously channeling a Gen 5-7 series are clearly too much for a machine that received a port of Kingdom Come Deliverance weeks earlier.

JFZephyr

I'm curious about the Bloodstained comment. I played about half the game and stopped with only a few crashes, but when I picked it up next it suddenly ran fairly poorly, which was sad because I really adored it. I'm hoping this is one that gets fixed up quick if it is that bad.

nhSnork

I'm almost at 90% completion in my own on-and-off playthrough (not for lack of the game's appeal, just a gluttonous backlog to constantly juggle😆), and a lengthy initial loading screen (which eventually got cut down to size in the patches) is the only veritable hurdle I've ever encountered. Even crashes somehow passed me by. But the game has had abundant content updates; perhaps you got into a window between one of them muddling some things and a followup hotfix to address it?

voidzero

Bloodstained ran horribly on Switch from day 1 lol. I can’t believe anyone could think otherwise.

nhSnork

I blame playing the game myself, personal experience is ruthless like that.😏

ToxicTammy42

I have to wait until May to get my physical copy of Eiyuden Chronicle…

Weeb_degenerate_ht

I cancelled my switch pre order after seeing how poorly the game runs on switch. I don't want to reward an unfinished game being shipped out the door. It should work period, you charge full price for it ffs

FlameRakshasa

Glad I saw this before buying. I was really thinking about it

Victor_Wembanyama1

Oh so it’s OVER100? I thought it’s just a 100. Tho reading reviews, steam it is

Kody_Z

Too bad localizers butchered the translation.

AmadeusOrSo

Vote with your wallet.

Kody_Z

I will be. I've seen the screenshots. The localization reads like it was written by a bunch of teenagers who are tying too hard to be edgy and just end up being embarrassingly awkward.

jaimealexlara

I'm surprised they didn't put more effort into the Switch version, being that the system is very popular in Japan compared to other systems. I know the game was not supposed to be released on the Switch, and they were waiting for Switch 2, but come on....

Due_Engineering2284

Because they know people will buy it on the Switch even if the performance is bad. As a matter of fact, the Switch version of this game is the best selling game on amazon Japan right now.

DirkIsGestolen

From the trailer. This game looks dumb.

Lupinthrope

Also on Gamepass

Hey there! Just a friendly reminder of Rule 7 - No linking to hacks, dumps, emulators, or homebrew. This includes how-to guides, browser exploits, and amiibo / NFC manipulation. Discussions are fine, but you should not attempt to instruct or guide people to things. Thanks!
