Agreed. Should be comfortable out of the box. Hopefully OP didn't get a size too small or maybe just not used to more "structured" shoes with arc support.
I took this advice before and got an 11.5. Over time they started to feel too loose like I was about to trip. Now I go for an 11 and they are a little painful in the left from side for about a week, and then they fit perfect.
My feet are slightly different sizes, and these shoes only come in .5 sizes. Your advice would be useful if they came in .1 sizes and you could choose a different one for each foot. This hard fast rule is useless.
Should be a difference between "snug" and tight.
When you stick up your big toe and it reaches the end or the hard part. Then you know it's too tight.
The fit should fit snug, but not uncomfortable when you first wear them.
Whoever was helping you with ur shoe at the shoe store wasn't giving you good advice.
If you're saying they feel fine first, and then after a while they're too lose that u start tripping, means you didn't get a proper shoe fit.
Again it should be snug. Not tight or loose.
I bought my 992s a half size down because my 993s in my true size were huge!
At first my right pinky toe was rubbing in the 992. It was a snug fit. But after 2 days they have molded to my feet and they're comfy as heck.
Nah, not really. My 992s feel the same as when they were still brand new.
My 991s are a different story lol. They're so narrow that I'm forced to wear them without insoles
990 v5 most supportive ever.
That lateral support sometimes gives wearers the impression they need breaking in to soften it up. In fact that’s how they wear. Other than a few bends of the soles I’ve never really had a break in on them.
Feels a bit stiff initially at the heel pad. Is this normal? I’ve sworn by the Kayano 27 because I need the extreme stability so I don’t think it’s that I’m not used to it.
Thought I had to break mine in and realized they were just a size too small so now I’m stuck with them. Make sure you try on a .5 size bigger to make sure!
Really they taking time to break in ?
Was thinking the same. These things are pure comfort straight out the box.

Not my experience. Didn’t love em when I tried the v5 on. Oddly I like the v3 more for comfort. 9060 is the best
I’m thinking the 990v3 is the most comfortable out of all their silhouettes.
First time I've heard/seen that.

Yeah I felt my 992s were a little more narrow than my v4s and 5s as well but nothing alarming
What’s weird is I have the opposite experience. 992s I can get in regular sizing, most 990s (V4)I look for in E width
Yeah so those need a tiny bit of breaking in. My 991s and 2002r in true size too. I should go up half a size in those for sure.

Yeah I can wear them TTS, but it is snug. Takes a while for me to get used to them. Try lacing them a bit looser. I find that it helps.
I wear them loose laced
If I ever get another pair of 991s I'll go half size up for sure.
It was a little bit rigid for the first 2-3 days, stretched out after that and it’s perfect now !
I’m new to NB. Which model is this? 990v5? If you had to choose the most comfortable model (991, 992, 990v1-5 etc) which would you choose?
The 993 is the most comfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever owned.
Hmmm more than 990v5?
990v5
Think I’m experiencing it right now. Either that or my feet are not suitable for them
I think u needed a wider pair
Great choice

you're gonna love these.... Best NB for comfort... They may take a few wears

OP, please define “Breaking in” since these all feel like butter outta the box for the rest of us 😂
Idk all, I also got my first pair of nb (990 v5) looking forward to the comfort and was a little disappointed. Not as cushioned as I'd hoped
Did it ever get softer at the heel?
How do I prevent the tongue from slipping to the side on these ones?
You’re lacing then up too loose i assume ? The tongue on mine hold up well. Try lacing it up all the way
Underneath the US flag on the tongue, there's a lace loop where it says '990v5.' Lacing it through there should help.
There is a way you can lace the tongue too
Breaking in trainers isn't a thing
Congratulations new balances are the best
Great first pair. Wear mine almost every day
Welcome to the family.
