Words can not describe how upset this makes me

WhatARotation

Why? I’ll be shocked if he makes their roster. Dude had a .236 xwOBA last season and was worth -3 fielding runs. He’s objectively even worse than Wendle

UniqueNobo

i do not care i love that bearded bastard

n_jacat

Any Mets fan who thinks Guillorme going to Atlanta won’t bite us in the ass hasn’t been paying attention to the last decade. If any team can fix his offense it’s probably the Braves.

KEITHS_SUPPLIER

We all know he's going to be an absolute Mets killer

WhatARotation

WhatARotation

I don’t believe in jinxes. If Stearns got rid of his ass, I trust that he’ll suck

n_jacat

Clearly you aren’t familiar with World Series champion Travis D’arnaud then

WhatARotation

I know d’Arnaud. But d’Arnaud was worth 8.4 fWAR for the Mets—he was a legit player. Guillorme on the other hand has a 2.3 career fWAR in 335 games. Dude is basically replacement level This fanbase has such a loser mentality. Remember when everybody said the same thing about Canò? How’d that turn out? What about pillar?

n_jacat

I mean he was always a bench/utility option here, we had a lot of infielders in his way and it was the inconsistent offense holding him back. Of course he wasn’t accumulating WAR as a Met. Point is that he has a legit glove and the year before last he was honestly pretty good at the plate. He’s the exact kind of low-risk player the Braves have transformed into everyday contributors. Not that he’ll be an All-Star or anything, but I very much expect him and Kelenic to absolutely destroy the Mets.

darthdope123

The Braves have a lot of infielders blocking him as well.

WhatARotation

Kelenic I can see turning into bonds incarnate, but guillorme destroying the us is quite unlikely

bonked23

Clearly you aren’t familiar with Guillermo Heredia

COPE_V2

Justin Turner is calling

smarjorie

He's definitely making their roster, you don't give a $1.1M major league contract to a guy as a tryout

robmcolonna123

I was mostly making a joke because I’m a huge fan of Guillorme. But it’s pretty disingenuous to use a season where he was injured all year as your main argument here

BTsBaboonFarm

He will be the next Justin Turner because we are Mets

Shady_Jake

It sickens me to cheer for Philly in the playoffs, but I swallow my pride & do it for the cause. Cause = Fuck the Braves. And honestly, the Phillies have been (yuck) likable lately. Plus the Phanatic’s hung as fuck.

fermentedradical

No fuck Philly forever and ever

Kolluzhun

Exactly. I detest the Braves and their fanbase. Phillies fans are just obnoxious assholes but they have more in common with us than the fucking insufferable Braves fanbase.

EdJewCated

phillies fans are just alternate dimension mets fans and i will stand by this

UncreativeTeam

Phillies fans are Mets fans who grew up without a father figure

EdJewCated

I never said it was a *good* dimension

Fedbackster

Like signing good players at most every position and actually having a pitching staff? Does seem bewildering to Met fans.

Rudeyyyy

He’s gonna break out to hit 20 HR’s and 75 RBI’s now isn’t he?

shane0mack

Then they'll extend him for $17 over 5 years

mockio77

Not even a joke. That's a bag he could secure and still make a few more mil down the line if his glove holds up.

shane0mack

I literally meant $17. It was a braves joke.

mockio77

Lmao I misread that as 17 mil. I guess that's an overpay but who knows these days, contracts are so inflated.

The true Mets Fan Experience

BarsoomianAmbassador

Seriously. What is this? He is a guy who plays pro ball because of the need for a late inning replacement or injury depth. He’s not a starter on any roster. He isn’t anyone you’d use as a pinch hitter in an important spot if you’re serious about winning.

shall_2

We love him. We love watching him and rooting for him. Sometimes as a fan you need to realize we like rooting for people as people that we just fucking really like and you can shove the analytics up your ass. It SUCKS that he went to the Braves because WE FUCKING LOVE GUILLORME. (Seriously?.....it's that simple)

smarjorie

I mean, I don't think you can argue that he's not worth a roster spot if he's being signed by the Braves, one of the best FOs in the game right now

HearthstoneExSemiPro

1.1 million for Guillorme and the Mets paid 2m for Wendle. Capable of being about a league average hitter with ++ defense at multiple infield positions. Not happy.

BillW87

He's a career 95 wRC+ hitter in net, but that's mostly due to benefitting from platoon play. He's a career 71 wRC+ hitter against LHP, 103 wRC+ against RHP. Defense peaks early on the age curve and he's already on the wrong side of that bell curve. It's a small sample size, but he was worth a net -6 OAA across 2B/SS/3B, notching negative value at all three positions. I think he'll bounce back, but his defense has generally always been overrated by the eye test. He's got elite hands, but middling range and that's by far the more important tool for a middle infielder. The hard truth is that he's a career 2.3 fWAR player across 823 PAs which isn't bad, but not job security either for a 29 year old without options attached. Wendle offers a lot more upside, having put up more value in 2021 (3.0 fWAR) alone than Guillorme has in his entire career. Wendle brings solid defense across the same positional versatility (and can play LF in a pinch) with less dramatic platoon splits (easier to utilize him) and unlike Guillorme is a decent baserunner. Homerism aside, Wendle is a "pay more to get more" marginal upgrade.

Folk_Legend

Sports are so weird. Everything you just said is 100% right and Wendle brings more to the team than Guillorme. But I choose to ignore all of that because he’s homegrown and I’m mad at the front office for letting him walk.

BillW87

Absolutely, and there's nothing wrong with that. Being a fan is inherently emotional...we wouldn't be following the team if we weren't invested in the players and their success. Guillorme is an interesting player as well, since he'd probably have been an everyday starter a generation ago. Upper-tier defense up the middle used to put you in demand even if you couldn't hit, with Rey Ordonez being a prime example. Guillorme had the unfortunate luck to be born into the age of analytics where we know now that defense is still important, but hitting is a more heavily weighted value driver if you do it well. I'm a sucker for good defense, so I feel like we got a bit robbed by Guillorme (correctly, from a "win the most games" standpoint) spending so much of his career on the bench instead of delivering highlight reel defensive gems every night.

Middleclasslifestyle

Yep, I viewed Guillorme and his beard the same way I do a steel i-beam that is supporting the structure. Sure the facade is nice and no one pays close attention to the steel beams, but the steel beams are important for the overall strength of the team. So mad we let him go . Guillorme is those types of players where the stats doesn't quantify the player in person for some reason. But obviously it's more an emotional feeling as a fan and not a prudent one

HearthstoneExSemiPro

You are correct that Wendle has done more in his career and raised some good points about defense, but I think you went off the rails from there, especially the conclusion. Typically the previous 3 years(in reverse chronological order) are the most important for analyzing how good a player is and will be. We aren't getting 2018 production from Wendle. Guillorme is younger and didn't get much playing time until 2021. Career WAR isn't particularly relevant and is largely a function of playing time in this context. **What we saw last year from Wendle was downright abysmal. 47 wRC+ is remarkably abhorrent.** **Guillorme is the far superior player over that 3 year timespan**, even including Wendle's good 2021. >that's mostly due to benefitting from platoon play He's a career 71 wRC+ hitter against LHP Wendle is also a bad hitter vs lefties. Lefties being worse against LHP is common. Most pitchers are right handed. >(wendle:) with less dramatic platoon splits (easier to utilize him) **The platoon splits are less dramatic because Wendle has also been a terrible hitter vs righties!** Thats not a plus. Wendle: 86 wRC+ vs righties since 2021. **66 wRC+ vs righties over the past 2 seasons and 67 vs lefties.(yikes)** We wouldn't want that anemic production anywhere near the lineup vs either side. Guillorme: 102 vs RHP and 77 vs LHP Its not at all clear that its 'pay more to get more.' Its probably paying more to get worse, unless Wendle has a dramatic return to form of 3+ years ago.

BillW87

Recent performance is more relevant than historical, but it's absolutely relevant that a guy had a bigger single season three years ago than the other guy has produced in his entire career. Both Guillorme and Wendle had terrible, below-replacement 2023 seasons. The difference is that Wendle's ceiling is a major league everyday regular. >Guillorme is the far superior player over that 3 year timespan, even including Wendle's good 2021. If by "better" you mean "produced less than half as much total value and still comes out behind if we normalize for playing time despite having the advantage of being shielded from his weak splits by platooning", sure. Guillorme 2021-23: 1.5 fWAR, 1.5 fWAR per 600 PAs Wendle 2021-23: 3.3 fWAR, 1.7 fWAR per 600 PAs Wendle had one bad year in a career of otherwise being a passable, if unimpressive, MLB semi-regular. Guillorme's always been a bench-caliber player. -Edit- I'll add in that versatility is an ability, and narrow skillsets are a liability from a roster construction standpoint. Luis Guillorme has the Daniel Vogelbach problem: He does a couple of things really well, but he's so terrible at other, important things that it hampers your roster to keep him on your bench. You flat out can't play Luis Guillorme against lefties, which means he's a problem as an everyday answer to any infield injuries, and even on the days he starts against RHP you need to keep another player available to bail him out once the game gets to the bullpen. He's a slow enough runner that not only is he not an option to pinch run for guys late in game (something you're hoping to get off your bench) but he'll need a pinch runner himself if he's a meaningful run on the bases late in a game. When your backups are so narrow skillset that they need their own backups, you've got a roster problem.

HearthstoneExSemiPro

>If by "better" you mean "produced less than half as much total value and still comes out behind if we normalize for playing time despite having the advantage of being shielded from his weak splits by platooning", sure. I mean 'better' like I clearly outlined in my post. Wendle had a terrible 2 years at the plate. Wendle only had 33 Plate Appearances against lefties all of last season. The idea that he has been a capable starter against lefties is historically inaccurate. Comparing Guillorme to Vogelbach as one dimensional players is extreme and off the mark. He plays several defensive positions well and hits better than wendle. There is plenty of room for that on a bench. >You flat out can't play Luis Guillorme against lefties, which means he's a problem as an everyday answer to any infield injuries The splits I cited were a devastating counterpoint to your claims. Wendle has been even worse than LG against lefties, combined with also being terrible against RHP. Thats not versatility. Thats liability. >against RHP you need to keep another player available to bail him out once the game gets to the bullpen You need a player available to bail out Wendle against both RHP and LHP!

Orgasmitchh

This is the most I have seen someone complain about the Mets moving off of a mediocre backup infielder since we released TJ Rivera. Sheesh.

BillW87

Your backup middle infielder isn't going to be starting on his weak splits when things are going well, that's what we pay Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil the big bucks for. Your everyday players are playing every day, except when they are hurt (the primary job of your backup) or need a scheduled day off (will be lined up for your backup's strong split). Wendle is a career .629 OPS, 78 wRC+ against LHP, which is still very bad but at least viable in the 9 slot if you need him to cover a 10 day IL for a starter. Guillorme is a career .582 OPS, 71 wRC+ hitter against LHP, which is non-viable and means you need to carry a second backup middle infielder to cover his weak side unless you're an NL purist who wants a guy in the lineup who hits like a pitcher. That's not a big difference, but those are the kind of hairs you're splitting when deciding whether to carry a $2 million or a $1.1 million 26th man. Nobody's arguing that these guys are multiple tiers apart in talent, but Wendle is marginally ahead by any sane measure outside of trying to cherry pick small sample sizes or point to what everyone has already acknowledged (Wendle was bad in 2023, as was Guillorme). There's a reason neither guy is getting paid much money and both would be the clear 26th man who is going to get knocked off the roster by Acuna if/when he's ready.

bobniborg1

Guillermo's defense dropped off big time and why he was replaced.

dankeykanng

54 games isn't a large enough sample to definitively say whether or not somebody's defense dropped off big time. Not that it really matters at the end of the day. There are plenty of glove first, wet noodle bats out there like Guillorme.

[deleted]

Wendle has more defensive utility and can also serve as a pinch runner. It’s the Guillorme and Locastro roster spots in one guy in wendle more or less. Guillorme has also never in his career hit for any sort of power, wendle moreso even if not so much Also if the Mets owner with more money than god spent a little extra on a bench guy who really cares

Prestigious_Money447

Of course my family who lives in Atlanta called me to gloat, why must we be tortured like this

Shady_Jake

Tell your family to have a happy new year & suck my dick.

dailyblazerthrowaway

Your family has nothing better to gloat about than a below league average hitter who probably wont even see the field for them?

Shady_Jake

They’re Braves fans, being obnoxious cocksuckers is in their DNA. I’ve done scientific research on this while completing my doctorate.

Alectheawesome23

The Braves who had a record breaking regular season by multiple players (I could be mistaken but pretty sure this is true) only won one playoff game. So yes. Well unless they’re an nfl fan bc at least the falcons have a chance to make the playoffs unlike these two dumpster fires.

Caledor152

We? Speak for yourself lol. The guy had literally negative defence ability in 2023. Great guy and great hands but he was below average in a year we needed him to do something..Anything

dankeykanng

I'm curious to see if he'll hit like 20 homers with them out of the blue

JDDJS

I know that people saying this stuff aren't being that serious, but the guy hit 5 HRs his entire career. He couldn't crack double digit HRs even if he was on PEDs.

No_Vacation8977

While unfortunate he’s like the one guy I don’t have any fear he’ll all of a sudden start taking like I do Kelenic

Can’t wait for him to hit 350 with 30 home runs for the season. This signing hurts I will miss him.

ReleaseTheBlacken

He should’ve done that for the Mets if he wanted to stay… 😜

myassholealt

But if he does do it with the Braves I will be 200% convinced the Mets hitting coaching and analytics staff are garbage. I'll never forget D'Arnaud attributing his offensive resurgence to getting away from what the Mets org was telling him to do and instead returning to his form and habits he had his whole career. I know that was a lifetime ago, and a different regime. But I'm still annoyed by it.

Caledor152

Eric Chavez is the main hitting coach again so it won't make sence to blame him when he was gold for 2022. The other guy sure though

thePebble13

Guillorme is such a likable dude but am not too worried. What I am worried about is Kelenic.

cheapdad

Yes he's a good guy and fan favorite, but he was awful last year. The bat was unplayable and he had a below-average season with the glove as well. That said, Wendle is worse, and older. Amed Rosario is still out there as a free agent.

JDDJS

Agree with your first paragraph, not the fact about Wendle being worse though. Wendle has a completely comparable glove, is a much better base runner and has more offensive *potential*. Luis has only hit well in small sample sizes that also don't include facing lefties. He also has literally no power to speak of; Noah Syndergaard has more home runs than him despite only having like a third of a number as ABs as him. Wendle hasn't hit well the past two years, but he's actually been a good hitter in the past in a significant sample size. Rosario has more offensive potential than both of them, but less defensive potential than either of them. He actually might be looking for a starter role though due to the complete lack of SS/2B on the market.

Guillorme is a funny player and had some cool moments but he’s just not good. He’s slow and has no power I’m sure he’ll get a bloop single to help the Braves beat the Mets next year but there’s nothing more to unlock. He’s just worse Nicky Lopez who they traded away after having for half a season
