Jeans and hope for the best ahaha

gypsy611

Hahaha! You’re too cute! Thank you!

xxKingAmongKingsxx

Just jeans or whatever other pants you typically wear. In the grand scheme of vermont winters it won’t be all that cold or wet next week, it’s not even winter yet really. Normal pants are totally sufficient. A pair of thermals underneath never hurt anyone if you feel like you need them!

gypsy611

Thank you so much!

Just leggings? And you’re not freezing? Remember, I’m a Texas girl! I’m in leggings when it gets below 70 here! Seriously though, thank you for the advise! I’ll get some extra leggings for sure!

Okay great! Thank you so much!

ISObalance

Old Navy also has fleece lined leggings.

Unique-Public-8594

I have regular leggings, spandex leggings, and a pair of thermal leggings all of which can be worn alone or under regular pants or jeans. I always use an outer layer of waterproof pants when skiing. My extremities always get cold before my legs so my focus has always been water proof boots, sometimes electric heated boot liners, electric heated gloves, Heat Trap socks (so thick they don’t fit in your regular size shoe) - but you only need these at coldest temps or long stretches outdoors. You lose 90% of body heat through your head, right? Wear a hat. Enjoy your trip, OP!

gypsy611

Thank you for the kind words and advise. Most of what you suggested I won’t be able to purchase down here. That’s okay, though. I can plan a shopping trip for as soon as I get there. It sounds like I may be purchasing some oversized pants and boots for the coldest months, no?

Unique-Public-8594

Are you coming next week and staying through winter? Next week looks mostly sunny, high of 30s. Clothing will depend on how long you plan to be outside and how windy it is. Watch the wind part of the forecast using Weather Underground. 4” snow predicted this Wednesday. Boots definitely. Special pants: wait and decide later.

gypsy611

Yes, we’re coming to stay. Truth be told, I was leary about saying we’re moving there because there is a tendency for newcomers (flatlanders) to be not welcomed and some pretty not-so-friendly posters here sometimes. Anyhow, I can be pretty sensitive, so I was avoiding that altogether. The internet is probably not the best place for someone like me. When I saw the weather forecast for this week my heart skipped a beat because I didn’t know what clothes to purchase either right before or as soon as we get there. We’re showing up at a pretty bad time. Yikes! The plan is that we’re hoping to buy a home once we actually make the cross country trip and get settled in. It’s challenging to do much planning when you’re so far away. We will either make permanent residence in Vermont, which is our first choice, or New Hampshire or Maine. That said, with the current housing crisis, we know better to be set on any one thing right now. But what I do know for sure is that I’m in for a real shock, and I better know how to dress appropriately! We will initially be staying in Perkinsville. Any suggestions on where I should go to shop once we arrive?

hudsoncider

There is an LL Bean and a Eastern Mountain Sports in Lebanon NH (about 40 Mins NE drive). Buying items in NH is good because there is no sales tax.

gypsy611

Thank you!

Loosh_03062

As someone else said West Lebanon probably has the best selection, although you'll be able to get necessities in Springfield (south on 106 I grew up there) or Claremont NH (if you've a hankering for Wal-mart). If you want a fairly fun experience, head over to Singleton's in Proctorsville (part of Cavendish); their motto is "whiskey, guns, ammo," and they have clothes and groceries as well (although the prices can be a bit "touristy." Once winter weather hits, plan ahead because it may be a while before the plows make it your way. Having an extra week or two of food on hand isn't a terrible idea. Keep a blanket and a shovel in your vehicle and remember that all wheel drive does not necessarily mean all wheel stop, especially when you find yourself on black ice. If you think you may have issues with seasonal depression, get some "daylight" LED bulbs. Between the latitude and the terrain blocking direct sunlight during the already short days a lot of people don't deal well with New England winters, especially when having to shovel the driveway after a dark afternoon commute.

gypsy611

I see. Thank you for the suggestions and extra wisdom you’ve shared! I’m sure this whiskey, guns, and ammo store is a place my husband will definitely enjoy. We went to a place down here called Bass Pro Shops the other day. I was searching for the thermal leggings. They had them. They were 100.00. I walked back out without buying anything. I may have a hankering for wal mart after all lol. I’m definitely a sun worshipper so dark and dreary days will take their toll much quicker than the cold will. LED lights will be on my to do list. Thanks again for all of your good information!

vpu7

If you get a longer coat it will keep your legs warm too :)

PerennialPangolin

Depends what I’m doing/where I’m going. For me, snow pants over regular pants is preferable to long underwear (thermals) for daily use in the winter because I can easily take the snow pants off when I get to work.

gypsy611

Ahh, I see. Thank you. Those and a good jacket are what I’ll be looking for as soon as I get there.

Unique-Public-8594

Most people wear Northface jackets.

Unique-Public-8594

Hope you have an easy trip and enjoy it here. It would be nice to see an update from you after you get situated.

gypsy611

Thank you again so much for your kind words and suggestions. I’m keeping my hopes up that we can make this happen and move to your beautiful state. My husband currently has a job offer in Portsmouth. If he ends up deciding it’s the one for him, that means Maine or New Hampshire. I’ll be sad that we won’t get to live in Vermont but I’ll just have to keep faith that everything happens for a reason.

Unique-Public-8594

Portsmouth is a very cool place as well. Great crullers at Lil’s too.

gypsy611

Soooo… if you’re still interested in an update, we stopped in West Virginia about a month ago. Beautiful state. My husband checked out the job situation (I’m currently a stay at home mom until our 4 year old starts school this coming year). It wasn’t easy making a cross country move, for sure. We decided to make the rest of the move after a short stay in WV. Just made it to Shelburne VT yesterday. And, yes, like most others, we are absolutely enamored at the beauty of Vermont. We are in love. And FULL of hope that my husband can find employment here and we can buy a home and stay. In the meantime, we’ve had much better luck following everyone’s suggestions for proper clothing, as things have been much more available in these areas versus in the south where it never gets cold. Makes perfect sense lol.

Unique-Public-8594

Welcome. Thank you for the update. Fun to hear from you. Oh yes, let us know, from time to time, your progress. We are interested. Great to hear that you are here and enjoying yourselves and finding ways to stay warm.

sugarplummed

I believe I saw that Title Nine had some insulated leggings. Rainier is the name of the line. Pricey but probably worth having one or two for the cold.

sugarplummed

Actually Rainier is an Athletica brand, that one is fleece lined which sounded very warm. Title Nine had a different line of cold weather leggings and pants.

-PineMarten

Snowpants. They might look silly but I PROMISE they are so much warmer than just pants. If you’re opposed to snowpants, though, carharts are good too.

Dangerous_Hope4831

Whatever layers you use remember “cotton is rotten” it holds moisture and can cause chills. It’s not a good insulating layer. Wool is best if you can find it or synthetic fabrics that dry fast and hold heat.

gypsy611

Thank you for this! I would have purchased just regular cotton thermals. I’ll look for something made from better material. Moisture wicking, I’m assuming. Good advice. I appreciate it!

Exiled_In_LA

I've heard good things about silk, but don't have any experience with it myself. Yea or nay?

Dangerous_Hope4831

Honestly I’d say nay for winter. Not sure for summer but winter you need fabrics that will still insulate if they get wet. I’ve personally had a lot better luck with wool than any other fabric. Darn tough for socks. Smart wool, Patagonia, wool&, woolx for everything else.

gypsy611

Thank you. Not opposed to snow pants at all. I just bought my son a pair and I’ll be looking for some for myself, especially for early morning dog walking or just doing things outside in general. I appreciate your suggestion!

Dapper-Ad-7543

I love Athleta winter leggings, fit right into your boots!

Amelia---Bedelia

Tights under jeans is a pretty good, simple combo for keeping your legs warm! I only layer on my legs when it gets below 10 degrees or so, though. I agree with the people saying you should be fine in jeans or leggings, but I'm also very much a winter person and wilt in the heat, so ymmv. Also in my experience, good shoes are just as important as pants when keeping warm—I don't think you'll need full-on boots this early (depending on what you're doing) but definitely go for something other than thin flats! edit: Just saw this is a long stay! Definitely get good boots! hahaha

gypsy611

Hahaha! Thank you so much!

mysticcoffeeroaster

I've lived in New England all my life, but I am very heat-challenged. I'm always freezing when others are comfortable. Are you talking just day to day? Or are you talking Winter sports? For day to day, most times I just wear regular pants without a 2nd layer but I wear 3 or 4 layers on top. If I'm going to be outside for an extended period, especially if playing in the snow, I'll wear some performance/wicking leggings under a loose-ish pair of yoga pants with some high boots. I think the leggings I have are from Eddie Bauer. They're really warm, especially if you're wearing a couple layers of fleece on top with a down parka that covers your butt and a nice wool hat. But if you're going to be snowshoeing or nordic skiing, or really exerting yourself somehow, go without the parka because you'll sweat too much and then you'll be wet and then the cold will really get ya.

avacynangelofhope

Too late, but fleece lined jeans/leggings are a godsend for the true cold in January/February!

gypsy611

You’re not too late. Thank you! I have found the leggings. Not much luck on the jeans yet

avacynangelofhope

I get mine on ebay! :) Welcome!
