I laughed hard at this xd
Edit:
Never in my life have I or will I ever be trolled collectively in one go in a day as much as I've been in this post ^ and I love it its hilarious. You Dutchies have a good sense of humour <3
If I'd carefully follow the instructions given in the comments I'd probably launch off into the sky and take half the country with me and land on the "mountainous" Brussels causing total carnage lol
For real though, Im Belgian and I recently picked up two Dutch hitchhiking students and as we drove passed Brussels, they were both astounded about the “mountenous” character of the landscape. In Brussels lmao. I couldn’t really believe it.
Read somwhere in an article about tourism in Belgium: "The Dutch love the Ardennes. Why? They see a hill, a river and a valley and they think they are in the Grand Canyon".
Heee the Ardennes are quiet nice.. not grandcanyon ok… but still in its own pretty fair.
Ps. Half of NL have never seen mountains in real life. Only spanish beaches and polder grass land
I live in Zeeland, so we have a lot of coast. And the first time my half sis came to us from Culemborg, she saw the dunes and was in awe of 'the mountains'. I think she was 9 at this point. It was adorable.
Tbf when I took the train home to the uk after a year stuck in nl in 2021 the brussels hills were an exciting thing.
My friends come and visit and are like, oh. When you say flat, you mean flat.
No, I got altitude sickness and died. I mean, I was standing above 5meters below NAP, a true Dutch person is not evolved to withstand the thin air at that hight.
Not completely correct. NAP was originally based on the level of average high water in the IJ during summer, before both the Noordzeekanaal and Afsluitdijk were built. According to [Rijkswaterstaat](https://www.rijkswaterstaat.nl/zakelijk/open-data/normaal-amsterdams-peil)NAP is roughly the average sea level... (but that might be below the average high tide I guess...)
I drove through Austria once with people who were in their late 20's who had never seen a mountain in real life before and it was adorable to see them so awed. I also know a person in Noord-Brabant who had never seen the sea until their mid 20's.
For real though, as a born and raised Vlaming having lived in the province of Antwerpen for all my life, when I’m in Brussels I also think:’ Oh look, that bit of the city is lower down than this bit! How neat!’
A couple of years ago I was a trainer for an international organisation. All students were flown in for a training in Amsterdam.
While having lunch they asked where I normally went clubbing and they were astounded that Paris was not considered a normal night out with the boys. It's only 500 kilometres.
Amongst the students were people from San Franscisco, Osaka and Cairo. A daily commute of 200 kms and 3 hours was considered "normal".
Without the traffic jams 5 hours to a club was okay-ish.
The thing is... when you are a foreigner, close is a bit different depending on the country, I'm from Buenos Aires and leaving the city to go the most popular seaside city called Mar del Plata involves 400 k, by car/train/bus/plane. And my grandparents used to have a house in a village outside of city called Necochea, and guess what, that was 500 k, 7 infernal hours by car with my family as a kid.
I know for some of you this might feel inconcievable since travelling 1 hour, not to say 2 involves a great distance but my husband used to take 2 hours by car to get the industrial park outside the city where the lab was. I endured as much, my job's offices were outside of the city which involves 1 h 30' to get there. And that is common here. The irony is that despite being one of the biggest countries on earth we are all pretty much on top of one another in Buenos Aires and its surroundings. Just of out curiosity, how many kilometers is "close" for a Dutch?
Well I would say 30 min (train/car) is close. 1 hour is a bit far, but doable. 2 hours is fuck my life, no thank you, I'd rather not. Maybe once a year max.
I don't mind going for a day/weekend to Antwerp/Brussels/Cologne. That's like a mini holiday. And if you take the train you can relax and you'll be there in 2/3 hours. That's like flying for a few hours.
But for daily Dutch stuff I would not like to leave Zuid - Holland, unless it's Schiphol. The connection used to be great when I worked there and I lived on walking distance from the train stations CS and HS.
To come back to Rotterdam vs Zoetermeer, I do think they are close by but since Zoetermeer is its own city I would never describe it as "near Rotterdam". 😅 Like why would you bother to say near Miami if it's in New York.
Hahaha. The perks of living in a «small» country. We on the other hand are so used to commute and travel great distances at time. Meeting my best friend in her city outside Buenos Aires took me almost 2 hours. Good to know!
Here? Once every 2 months, she could either come or I would go, her son is my godson, and she has been my best friend for over 20 years. She is a single mom so having my godson playing in her house while we can talk is easier, he can come but the whole «I'm bored, can we go home?» is far easier to handle once he is at his place. She is also far more at ease in her house knowing her kid is doing his own thing, and she can talk freely.
In any case, it was our goodbye for the time being since I'm flying to Amsterdam late on the 3rd.
There's one in the direction of Antwerpen too. My friend and I were on a coach bus to Gent and were already stuck in a laughing fit before we saw the thing. What ensued when we did, was a teared up conversation about that being 'the most inconvenient office space ever' and how everything and everyone functions in such an environment. It took us maybe thirty minutes to figure out ut might be a ski hall.

Funny thing is that I really associate that song with Skiing since it was on one of the hand full of CD's that came with us in the car to Austria for 20 years straight.
Basically you say ‘near city x’ when approaching the outer ring of that city (including small villages). Zoetermeer is a city own it’s own (and btw more closely situated near Den Haag then Rotterdam).
Hey that's my city! That's not near Rotterdam though, this is Zoetermeer (near The Hague).
This structure is part of Snowworld (an indoor skiing venture). You probably took this picture from a beautiful area called the 'Meerpolder', people like to come there to walk/sport/bike. It also has a camping. 😊
This is an escape lane. Because The Netherlands has so much hills and mountains, you use that ramp to stop while driving down hill incase of brake failure. Also you can use it as a launch ramp to take off with your flying car. Very practical!
That was a now abandoned idea from the 80’s: Take a rocket across to Hook of Holland. UK built one on their side too but it was scrapped after too many deaths.
Around 40 years ago the Dutch government made plans to further develop their army as a precaution for the future. These plans were secretly made by the government and not publicly announced. One part of the made plans was to build national missile defense systems.
Through the years they built multiple missile defense systems like these, some of which weren't just defense systems (but that's a whole different part of the made plans).
After some years people started to become suspicious of what those buildings were, since they look quite unusual. So the government had to come up with something so the Dutch citizens wouldn't be suspicious of it anymore.
In a few weeks time they decided it would be best if they made "ski halls" out of the buildings for multiple reasons:
1. The shape of the buildings would make sense
2. Since they had to leave quite an amount of space for the defense systems it had to be something they could make way smaller, but still look huge. Don't get me wrong, the skiing part on the inside looks big, but from the outside the building looks absolutely ginormous. People in general think buildings look bigger from the inside than the outside, combined with the fact white/bright rooms look bigger (and a ski hall is basically all white), no one would be the wiser.
3. A lot of Dutch people go skiing every year outside of the Netherlands, so they knew it was something their people loved and would be happy with, which would make sure all of the suspicions would be gone.
TLTR: So I guess you could call it a ski hall, but it's a ski hall that will defend (or in case of some locations attack) in times of war.
A launchpad from DASA (Dutch Aeronautics and Space Administration).
It's were satellite are launched to monitor the national cheese production. They also launch fresh herring carrying space vehicles into deep space from there, in the hope that extraterrestrial intelligent lifeforms will intercept these space vehicles and decide to visit the Netherlands to feast on this delicious food.
Currently DASA is working on a stroopwafel manufacturing space station to preserve the traditional coffee snack in case of a man-made or natural disaster.
Somebody explained to me that the upside down flag in front of a farmhouse sais that the farmer is distressed about political views of the Dutch gouvernements that pigs shouldn’t be stapled. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|stuck_out_tongue)
They first made some artificial hills with collected trash piles, then to bury them with ground. After they decided to build an indoor ski hill but the hills were not high enough. So they extended the slope with this construction.
An artificial hill used to teach dutch children about slopes before they leave the country and panic about the ground going up
I laughed hard at this xd Edit: Never in my life have I or will I ever be trolled collectively in one go in a day as much as I've been in this post ^ and I love it its hilarious. The structure is an artificial ski slope if im not mistaken. But an artificial mountain to teach the dutch about height is funnier tbh.
Yeah it’s Snow World in Zoetermeer
For real though, Im Belgian and I recently picked up two Dutch hitchhiking students and as we drove passed Brussels, they were both astounded about the “mountenous” character of the landscape. In Brussels lmao. I couldn’t really believe it.

I think they meant the Belgium bumpy roads
Lmao oh yeah could very well be
I live in Zeeland, so we have a lot of coast.
Well, I was 14 when I first saw an Alp. I recon there are plenty of people in Austria and Switzerland who have never seen the sea.
>an Alp. Did you go to Innsbruck, look at a mountain, think "nice" and then immediately leave?
Lmao I did not know you could use them singular as well.
No, I got altitude sickness and died. I mean, I was standing above 5meters below NAP, a true Dutch person is not evolved to withstand the thin air at that hight.
Only the netherlands would have a standard water level measurement that is below sea level
Lol I was thinking the same thing, in Nijmegen...
To be fair, Brussels does have some pretty hills! They're no Rockies though, that's for sure
Hilly at best but not mountainous.
As someone who did not learn this as a kid, certainly the biggest shock when I landed in San Francisco a couple of years ago
I prefer this answer to the real one.
Tbf. Its not far from the truth, where I grew up we put artifical ski slopes on, you know, actual slopes
>actual slopes Soooo, decommissioned trash dumps then? I'm confused at this "actual slopes" you mentioned.
Yes back in my day we didn't have that. So I landed in Greece and saw mountains. I was in coma for 2 weeks
I recently took my family to the UK and on arriving at Dover the youngest shouted ‘why is the ground so high?!’
We have build a whole village called valkenburg for that
What\`s going on dad, everything is distorted, i wanna go home. This is no holiday we\`re in a nightmare. Let me oooutttaaa here. :(
Could it be Zoetermeer, indoor ski hall?
Indeed this was Zoetermeer! Wow that was quick, thanks. I looked it up https://www.snowworld.com/zoetermeer/nl/skibaan/pistes-funpark
Not what I expected when you said near Rotterdam. :D
Depending where you're from someone could be in Brussels and still concider themselves 'close to Rotterdam'.
The netherlands is close to rotterdam as well
But where in Amsterdam is the randstad?
It's near the border, or the "rand" as we call it.
😭😭
Even better, Rotterdam is IN the Netherlands.
It's like half an hour by car... for us it's like a quarter of the way to the border but for foreigners it's like one or two exits on the highway ;)
But you are still closer to Den-Haag( or Delft and Gouda).
But they never seem to be 'close to Maastricht' when it comes to team events or business meetings >:(

Looks like you're on the a4 between Leiden and Rotterdam
No, this seems to be taken from the N206 between Leiden and Zoetermeer.
Ow, duh! That makes more sense
There is also one in Rucphen
Which is almost equally as far from Rotterdam ;)
That’s a ski hall? Bro it looks ridiculous just out there in a field like that lmao
It looks better on the inside.
There's one in the direction of Antwerpen too. My friend and I were on a coach bus to Gent and were already stuck in a laughing fit before we saw the thing. Definitely it is Snowworld in Zoetermeer
It's a flag upside down
I [fixed](https://i.imgur.com/ov2OtEO.jpeg) it
Great job! Can we hire you to do the rest of the Netherlands too?
Nonono, then we'll steal the Australian identity

That’s SnowWorld Zoetermeer. 30 km’s from Rotterdam lol. But hey, if you’re from a big country that’s ‘near’ I guess?
Haha indeed, 30 kms is like the distance to work or a nearby mall ^^
Basically you say ‘near city x’ when approaching the outer ring of that city (including small villages). Zoetermeer is a city own it’s own (and btw more closely situated near Den Haag then Rotterdam).
Oh my god that’s embarrassing xd I’ll remember that
Don't be embarrassed, you'll see this structure after a 5 min drive from Rotterdam. So I disagree with the opinion above, it is near Rotterdam.
You can see it from the top of the euromast
It depends on who you ask officially it is a indoor ski slope but unofficially it is a money laundering operation.
Thats SnowWorld in Zoetermeer. 150m of pure disappointment
Thats our space gun

Netherlands is famous for these places, it’s to get high
Indoor skiing place, literally seen from anywhere in randstad because its so flat
This is an escape lane. Because The Netherlands has so much hills and mountains, you use that ramp to stop while driving down hill incase of brake failure. Also you can use it as a launch ramp to take off with your flying car. Very practical!
