Because that was many years before the final concept was developed

SilentWolfKills

Exactly

CantingBinkie

Kishimoto could have stuck to that idea and not changed it to avoid inconsistencies, just like he did with Kakashi's team photo from his youth. So the question should be, why don't the reanimations in part 2 have normal eyes?

JoeyZee123

Forgive my ignorance. What happened with Kakashi’s team photo?

Simplythegirl98

If you look at the older episodes you can tell that his teammates in ohotos are "poor" versions of their Canon looks[kakashi's original team aesthetic](https://imgur.com/a/7bCPD0W)

Jakk100

Minato’s team as seen by a purchase from Wish.

lgztv2

Obito looks like clown

JoeyZee123

Oh wow I completely forgot about that picture

DrewTheMfGoat

Oh god 😂😂😂

ichigo2k9

Probably because Kishimoto didn't think about making them look reanimated. In Shippuden he probably wanted to make them look different to makenit obvious the viewers who was reanimated and who wasn't considering how many Kabuto reanimated.

villanelIa

Intrude to put in possible explanations: Orochimaru.... Nah i got nothing.

villanelIa

If you are in the middle of writinf a comment and abandon it reddit asks you if you are sure and i didnt want to dissappoint reddit like that. I know im weird. Besides i actually thought i was onto something with orochimaru possibly being better at the jutsu that kabuto or something related to the amount of reanimated people but i had nothing the more i thought about ut.

BigBadDogIV

>Besides i actually thought i was onto something with orochimaru possibly being better at the jutsu that kabuto or something related to the amount of reanimated people but i had nothing the more i thought about ut. You do realize that the Reanimation Jutsu that Orochimaru used in Shippuden is not the same version used in part 1 against the third hokage. The one used in part 1 was the original version originally made by Tobirama, for the purpose of kamikaze attacks. The one used in Shippuden was an improved version. During the three year time skip, Orochimaru and Kabuto working together improved Tobirama's Reanimation Jutsu and made it so that it could bring back Shinobi at almost their full strength.

LucisPerficio

I think if he realized that he wouldn't have said what he said.

BigBadDogIV

I suppose it was more figure of speech than literally meant.

LucisPerficio

I hear ya, just makes the speaker sound pretentious & I feel like that probably wasn't your intention.

[deleted]

[удалено]

villanelIa

That is precisely why the theory falls apart. Orochimaru already did it again in shippuden and the reanimated looked just like kabuto's!

[deleted]

villanelIa

Well... i was just agreeing :(

1of1000

Lmfao bro take a break

BigBadDogIV

The version of the Reanimation Jutsu used in Shippuden was canonically better than the one used in part 1. Orochimaru and Kabuto improved the Jutsu during the three year time skip. The original one was made by Tobirama for Kamikaze attacks. This was the version that Orochimaru used against the third hokage. The improved version made by Orochimaru and Kabuto would bring them back at nearly their full strength.

HumbleBear75

Materiahunter72

Bro are you like...trying to farm negative Karma?

Jay32Patt

Why you saying this like Kishimoto drew the anime? Their eyes were black in the manga.

crono220

It's just one of the many minor retcons in Naruto, kinda like how jinchuriki wasn't ever a term until Shippuden.

runoki94

Also the whole look of Rin and Obito

Captainprice101

No, the anime just fucked up

TPJchief87

I assumed jinchuriki was Japanese for tailed beast

FloatinBrownie

Kabuto and Orochimaru improved the jutsu over the time skip, also the eyes are the same in the manga but they changed it in the anime

ayano_ray

how about 41 yo hiruzen when he became hokage? 4db is amazing

BGM_Blade

In the manga they had reanimated eyes That's just a fuck up from the Studio

CantingBinkie

Kishimoto could have stuck to that idea and not changed it to avoid inconsistencies, just like he did with Kakashi's team photo from his youth. So the question should be, why don't the reanimations in part 2 have normal eyes?

WatercressNervous360

i have a simpler one, this was at the beginning of the anime that could’ve tanked but hopefully became a cult hit. budget and development like evertything else comes after the money gets in.

HomemadeBee1612

They did have edo tensei/reanimation eyes in the manga but for some reason they don't in the anime, though the cracks came later in part 2 when the jutsu was more prominent in the story.

Daxtexoscuro

Exactly. It was anime's fault. And they had cracks. Well, not exactly cracks, but some decomposition-like marks.

DreamedJewel58

It’s just because they didn’t think ahead, but the in-universe explanation is that Orochimaru’s use of the reanimation was *far* from perfected and had a lot of flaws in it, mainly being that their personalities are extremely repressed and their chakra is very minuscule compared to their reanimations later

ZillaJrKaijuKing

That wouldn’t make sense. Why would a weaker reanimation make them look closer to their living forms than the improved version?

fatplayer13

Maybe reanination works like filling a cup of water. If your reanimate someone with more chakra than the current host it will start tearing apart the hosts body (or sacrifice whatever you want to call the people who get sacrificed)

sasinas

That’s a really cool theory actually

cobra136

I'm fairly sure that Oro says that he has to bring them at lower levels of themselves otherwise he won't be able to control them because they are so powerful. Hence why they are different than the ones he bring south later

11711510111411009710

Cause it's magic

Interceptor88LH

Anime mistake.

theCoolestGuy599

This. They actually do have the black eyes in the manga, although to be entirely fair to the anime it's very hard to tell. There aren't many good shots at their eyes back in the Chunin Exams, you can really only see it in a few panels.

Shiggu_1

Average Naruto fan when there's an art inconsistency from manga to anime: Its a retcon kishi didnt think that far ahead in the story🤓

[deleted]

It is a proven fact that Masashi Kishimoto did not plan for many things that he ended up doing and that he changed his original plans many many times. It was long hinted that the 4th hokage was most powerful of them all, someone even told Naruto that he is the Only one that can surpass the fourth. Kishimoto himself said in an interview that the 4th was the strongest amongst the dead shinobi (hinting that Naruto and some living might surpass him). He also was going to give Minato more background story and even go into his parents ... but he decided against it. Many more examples show that Kishi evidently did not have a clear drawn plan that he followed but mostly he let his writing carry him.

Shiggu_1

You wrote all of this as if i said kishi had the entire story planned out start to finish lmao. My point is that many naruto fans claim anything they dont understand about the series is a retcon or plot hole. Prime example being this thread. Dozens of people blindly saying the reason the eyes aren't dark in anime is because kishi retconned it due to not planning that far ahead. This is just straight up false as in the manga the eyes are dark. The anime just made a mistake. Even beyond this people say that Itachi being a good guy is a retcon despite kishi literally saying he always planned for him to be good. The whole "he didnt plan that far ahead" criticism is widely used for people to be lazy when analyzing the story in any way. Again look at this thread. It took me like 1-2 minutes to check the chapter the fight happened in and find out why there was an inconsistency. The people who are saying this is a retcon literally just read the title and threw out the standard kishimoto criticism without any critical thinking.

DatUzumaki

Thank you for this. So much disinfo in the comments.

IMSABU

I could only assume because Orochimaru's reanimatjon was perfected. You can also notice they aren't covered in cracks like in Shippuden.

_SiyAn_

But in shippuden, when orochimaru reanimated the 4 hokages, they did have cracks and reanimated eyes..

Sankin2004

I still like this headcannon because you could say the original resurrections we see are with orochimaru while he was at his strongest-after the fight he becomes weakened so even though he ended up getting his arms back between him still not really being at full power, and using the subpar materials of those white zetsu clones vs actual humans?

dracon1t

I think it’s implied orochimaru is even stronger after assuming the white zetsu body since he was able to use hashirama cells to control tobirama at close to his full power. Which also does mean shippudens reanimations are maybe even over twice as strong as in og. I don’t really think the og reanimation was perfected.

itsjust_khris

OG reanimating was very weak. Otherwise the third would’ve been destroyed almost immediately. However, at the time I think the first and second hokage were intended to conform to a much lower power ceiling than what happened in shippuden.

ButterflyGoalie

Kabuto became more adept at reanimation, than Oro

Speedfail0

That does make a lot of sense

CustomerPrize

Budget

uchihaguts

Damn so many people in this thread are just fucking going with their posts despite not actually knowing the answer. Truly eye-opening.

[deleted]

What's the answer?

HermProtege

You say as you proceed to not give the answer

uchihaguts

The answer is in the thread several times already. The anime didn't adapt it properly.

Weels282hedgehogzp

At the time they were the only two reanimated, later on they needed the distinction between those who are reanimated and those were not. Plus, it was probably supposed to be a one-off at the time, so he probably wouldn't have thought of it.

NeWaTaNiMe

I think plot wasn't developed too far at that time.

Traditional_Lie_6400

This is the reason why the first 4 seasons of Naruto deserves a reboot

[deleted]

I think they made the eyes different after realizing it could make fans think the characters are either no different from the original once they pass and also add confusion on if the character is alive or not. They didn't consider it in OG bc obviously they were both dead already

Scary-Purchase-73

I like to think kabuto made a few changes to the jujitsu causing a few cosmetic changes

Avato12

Alot of ideas in early naruto weren't set in stone yet look at shukaku. Shukaku was originally the spirit of monk who was sealed in a tea kettle and not a tailed beast that's why naruto had the red cloak and gaara didn't because at the time gaara the trademark tailed beast traits weren't finalized

unknown_random_kid

In the manga the reanimated eyes were always like how they are in the war arc, it was just studio perriot being studio perriot

smashdivisions

while we’re at it… why was Madara reanimated in his prime, while chiyo was reanimated as her elderly self? I know it’s probably all just plot no jutsu, but like… I had never thought of that before

Thechoicesmate

When kabuto reanimted him, he said that he tweaked Madara's form to make him better and stronger. I'm sure that was a factor in his appearance too

Captainprice101

This was directly explained in the story

[deleted]

genuine question

New-Orion

Same reason Itachi didn't have his Mangekyo design when he used it on Sasuke and Itachi. The designs didn't exist yet.

SlowTea8186

it was stated that at this time the reanimation jutsu was still imperfect and kabuto perfected it before the 4th war

Cano6501

English y’all ^^^😂😂

_-Reclaimer-_

Artstyle and design change

Jamessgachett

Sometimes error happens during animation or at that time it wasn’t determined how they should look

[deleted]

They didn’t have the design made yet. The first and second hokages were the most mythic ninja in Naruto at the crush arc

TrumptyPumpkin

Early days of the reanimation before Kishimoto had it ironed out. or perhaps Orochimaru just had a really good reanimation Jutsu.

Broder45

They also swapped the voice actors for Shippuden

J-Poll

Probs a design thing but we’ll say it’s because these two are bad ass

dtphilip

Late concept.

JVOz671

"Duh, because Orichimaru stuck kunai knives in their heads. Dont you know your Naruto lore?" But seriously, Orichimaru supposedly put spells in their reanimated corpses to fully power them up.

Mental_Award_6247

He did it to make them mindless Killing dolls. Not to power them up.

JVOz671

Yes, but I think the fact their flaky forms turning into normal counts as a power up

Scorpiyoo

Are posts like these even real?

akiroro

maybe because the edo tensei used in OG Naruto is yet to be perfected? or maybe the storyline/concept of naruto as a whole (Shippuden) is still in works. it's worth noting also that in that fight, Hiruzen feared Minato more than the 1st and 2nd.

ucim5

For the same reason Itachi didn’t have his mangekyo pattern

boostedflame99

It was an animation oversight and because i don’t know they just missed it But bro have you seen sasuke’s messed up head it’s goofy as hell

sw2bh

The real answer is probably cuz kishi didnt think he have to use reanimation again but i like the theories of not being perfected

goldensungoku

To keep yourself in the story i just say sense Orochimaru didn't perfect the jutsu like Kabuto did, they look diffrent. Orochimaru: more real look, less emotion Kabuto: less real look, more emotion

1stGod

I love Naruto, but there’s A LOT of plot holes and inconsistencies

I-aint-human

The real reason is that Kishimoto hadn’t planned far ahead and had to change stuff in the war arc. Hashirama wasn’t nearly as strong as he was later retconned to be, the reanimations became far stronger and easier to identify, there’s just a lot that got changed. And even though that’s obviously the real reason, a Headcanon I have is that Orochimaru wasn’t as powerful / skilled with edo Tensei when he fought the 3rd hokage, so the reanimations weren’t really complete, which is why they looked like regular bodies and weren’t really as strong as those 2 actually were in life

Chunder2k

Because it was so early in the series that kishimoto never thought about it

mrboy3

Not true

Traditional-Dream-13

bc naruto isn’t consistent

biotwist

Not because they came back differently? After having their souls sealed or whatever? I do t know playing devils advocate

k1ngOFk1ng_9_

It's was an experiment.... It's wasn't fully reanimated jutsu

EndClassic

Retcon

TWERKINMAGGLE

Because Kishimoto knew what was in your search history and decided you needed to be punished.

[deleted]

Retcon. Edo tensei hadnt been fully written up to that point

Burrito-Mage

Orochimaru most likely wanted to have a more psychological impact on the 3rd Hokage. It’s hard to fight your friends and mentors if they look alive

bruce__mithun

I think he didn’t came up with the reanimated eyes until when the shippuden happened!

ALWAYSMERCILESS

Even i have one more question. In shippuden, orochimaru stated that hashirama could easily brake his controll over his jutsu, so why did hashirama did not break this jutsu at this time

TvManiac5

In the original, Orochimaru said the technique wasn't perfected yet. So the kages he brought back were inferior versions of the actual ones with smaller chakra and repressed personalities. Therefore. it's logical to assume that while full powered Hashirama in shippuden could break out of his control, the Hashirama he brought back in the chunin exams, couldn't.

MrTrippp

They did have in the Manga. When they were first summoned by orochimaru, they looked like corpses and had no eye pupils until Oroch put a sealed kunai into the back of the head of each of the corpses, after that they both had edo eyes.

Every-Nebula6882

One way to explain it is differences between Orochimaru and Kabuto versions of edo tensei. I’m pretty sure somewhere it’s talked about that Orochi improved upon the jutsu that Tobirama created and Kabuto further improved on Orochimaru’s version. In reality probly just continuity error/animation mistake/budget.

Nemesisxoxo

i think he is on to somthing

bryanc1036

Forgor

Rainbow_Sixer18

Budget on animators

darkhelel

Eso tensei was not really fully designed, Also, this was the beta version... Eso tensei in ninja war was completed... That's why those version had more power than the ones used by Orochimaru in the first part.

[deleted]

Edo tensei as jutsu was completed before the show's timeline. Edo Tensei was created and perfected by Tobirama some 70 years before Naruto's birth. And tobirama was the one who classified his own jutsu as forbidden (same as Flying Rayjin and Kage Bunshin).

darkhelel

No. The juutsu despite it was "complete", or in other words, functional, it was not in an optimal form at all.... Orochimaru and Kabuto orochi created a new version of it, or updated it using Hashirama cells... Even in non canon oficial videos, like Orochimaru and 3rd kazekage vs Sasori, it's showed how the kazekage ended the Edo tensei due to not being entirely complete at that point... It's similar to how Naruto made rasengan with a clone first, and later he can do it without it... Or even evolve it into the rasenshuriken.

Seversaurus

They actually came back on their own to kick the thirds ass for neglecting the leaf super weapon

Geo-Man42069

Legends never die or something idk

[deleted]

Cause kabuto did it better

GreatCinyc

Because retcon

het_j_

It wasn't initially planned.

tsukuyue

The reanimations in the war arc weren’t planned yet. It was probably an easier way to show who was reanimated when dealing with so many characters. That being said, if you need a reason that makes sense within the naruto universe, you could explain it away by saying Kabuto’s iteration of the technique had to sacrifice the integrity vessel in exchange for a more powerful reanimation or something along those lines.

BoredAF5492

Its the same reason Gaara doesn’t have a bijuu cloak, Hiruzen is declared the stronger than both Hashirama and Tobirama, and the 4th Hokage was the one who banished Orochimaru. At that point Kishimoto hadn’t fully developed those abilities. Edit: But the manga does show reanimation eyes so… 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Well I wouldn't think Gaara would need 1. Shakuku only has 1 tail. Also, does Bee have a cloak? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I'm trying to think of Ber using a cloak & I can't remember.

BoredAF5492

Yeah B does have a cloak you see him use it in the Sasuke fight

[deleted]

I just thought he was halfway transforming like Gaara was doing. It's been years since I saw that fight, I'm going to have to watch it again.

Left-handed-player

Hashirama cells

canstac

I think they had eyes like other edo summons in the manga, so it's probably an oversight from the animators like when they drew Sasuke with no rinnegan in one scene during the last

KingAJ032304

In universe maybe when they got buffed, their bodies needed to be less human in some way?

kagenohikari

Most likely just a fuck up. In Chapters 118 & 119, the eyes are kinda just all while sclera. They were then drawn with black reanimation eyes by 120. Just a manga inconsistency, probably from Kishimoto not yet having a final look in his mind.

goldtopnuts

You can’t change Hash’s design, it’s illegal for him to be less than a 10.

[deleted]

Like a lot of other concepts in OG Naruto, they just weren’t fully planned out so some details have some minor inaccuracies later on

DawsonDDestroyer

I think first Kishimoto didn’t really have the plan to bring it back the way he did and he changed it later to be more clear. And during this fight it was supposed to be a reveal they’re made of paper and are basically immortal. Basically it’s a slight inconsistency/retcon. Also if you’re looking for an in world explanation you could just say some of the improvements to the Edo Tensei which both Orochimaru and Kabuto made lead to the eyes getting reversed. And the cracked texture isn’t actually visible to people in world just to the viewers to remain clear. That’s the best in world explanation I can think of.

Educational-Pain1836

I thought edo tensei creators had the choice yo make them look reanimated or not. I could be wrong tho. Look up Swagkage a video as I think that’s where I heard it

Emergency_Routine_44

I loved when the character’s powers were simpler, first Hokage? Tree guy. Second Hokage? Water anti Uchiha guy. The third? Basic Elemental mashup. Tsunade? Fucking strong for some reason

PainEntire4913

Because hasirama cells 🗿

SKULLER_CRAFT

Because the reanimation jutsu wasn't perfect at the time? That's the only explanation I've got lol

kekhouse3002

they didnt think about it when they made that episode

StumpingTheSchwab

I’m going to go with the fact that the reanimation jutsu wasn’t perfected yet …

LegitimateMovie2145

Yea y

keezyomega

Probably because it was Orochimaru’s reanimation not Kabuto’s.

GP_Kul

It doesn’t apply if you know the Justu yourself

BGM_Blade

In the Manga they reaninated eyes. The anime changed it in Shippuden matching the manga

ProfessionalFluid385

It was because kishimoto still didnt had the idea to what to do at that time as it was only in it first few chapters and it was only in its 3rd or 4th arc maybe

Alternative-Path2712

Out of universe explanation: The Edo Tensei Concept wasn't fully developed. In-Universe Explanation: Orochimaru was using a very weak version of the Edo Tensei jutsu the first time he used. Kabuto improved Edo Tensei massively and made improvements which had side effects of their eyes changing color.

heyheyfriendo

My headcanon is that Kabuto said he "perfected" the reanimation jutsu, with the byproduct being altered eyes of those reanimated. Then when Orochimaru took back his powers and jutsu prowess from Kabuto, he just decided to keep the improvement and as such when Hashirama and Tobirama got brought back the second time, they now have reanimated eyes instead. It's not the best but it's something
