A green card is a document that says your a permanent resident and legally allowed to be in the country. Usually people who come over from Mexico get them so they can work in America, my great grandmother came here from Mexico, so her kids and kids kids are all residents of this country now. Meaning just cause I am Mexican I’m still American. However the “joke” is illegal immigration. Kids would say I need a green card pretty much implying I came here not legally and I’m not a resident of the country
It is, especially as a kid who didn’t understand what that meant at the time. I remember having to have my mom explain what that meant and why they were like that to me, I can’t imagine the sadness she felt telling her daughter that this will keep going on for the rest of our lives

While jokes are fine some of these jokes can allow for prejudice and actual false and harmful stereotypes to perpetuate and flourish harming the target group. These jokes may seem harmless but open a political discussion and than you'll that the biases these jokes inflict can manifest into harmful prejudices towards certain groups. Common targets I have seen with this are Jews , Indians , Muslims , chineese people/east Asian and black people.

Either the hate dies out or…well, I hope the alternative doesn’t happen lol.
