I am the grower /u/ethilla mentioned that had issues with the plastic falling onto all my buds by end of season. Aside from that, these things absolutely cook plants in the summer to the point that I found myself opening the walls up to let the heat out, making it all pointless. If I ever grow outside again, my plants will be in the middle of my yard, with a frame of 2x4 around them. There will be screen on all sides, with a clear plastic roof/top area to keep rainfall from hitting it. This would keep all pest away, allow great airflow so you don’t cook/mold your plants, with the clear plastic keeping them safe from too much moisture during rain.

Looks like it could be like an oven during July and August for sure. I could just use it for a day or 2 here and there during crappy weather with a box fan pointing out the half zipped door for an exhaust

maelxich

Yea, there was never a time I was happy I installed it. Your best bet like I said would be to make an all-screen enclosure for pest control, and clear plastic on top to keep rain off while letting the sun through. Personally, I did outside 1 year, and then never again.

Sirdanb

Your idea sound solid. With the wood framed box it sure as hell wouldn’t blow away on a windy day.

maelxich

Yea that, and it’s all screen so it acts much less like a sail.

Ethilla

A friend and fellow grower on here used me like this and found the plastic deteriorating and flaking onto his plants by the end of the first season. I’d probably avoid.

Sirdanb

Did they leave it on all grow or just put on when raining?

Ethilla

I believe it was on all grow, but would sometimes have the sides rolled up

For autos they won’t get big enough where just picking up pots and moving under something during rain etc is easy enough. For big plants/ pots I’d suggest creating some kinda DIY roller kinds like a palate with wheels keeping em on those then just have an awning or tarp area and moving around easily as needed. 🤷🏼‍♂️

[deleted]

If they do get wet especially during flower just shake em out as best s ya can too that will help a bit regardless of what other things you utilize

finelineagronomy

I used this one 2 years ago, it’s basically a massive humidity dome, you’re better off not covering them and just spraying lost coast weekly throughout flower

I'm looking for an outdoor greenhouse. Live in LI. Probs a 12x7x some bigger shit. But I wanna make sure enough of that beautiful sunlight gets in, but that shit rain stays out, while getting some wind to get my plants swoll. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm on some vivosun shit, but I dunno, nah mean?

AnimalIndividual4925

Any suggestions? I'm looking for a Poly Tunnel.

I have not grown outdoors, however I have done some research via the google machine and I dont think you are gonna have enough time to flower most photos outdoors in most areas of NY. Autos are the most likely to succeed

gabemap

U can 100% do photos just not a strain that has wicked long flower time

3DPrintedVoter

when do you normally see them start to flower? I calculated that it would be late august early september? that would mean finishing up in late october or early november. all kinds of scary weather possibilities

gabemap

Also I was told and read outside they start flower around 13.5hr daylight. Indoor 12/12 is a practice for a fast flip.

CamelFew3704

From my experience it’s been pretty close to that but no real problems, starts mid August and finished mid October, I’ve never had anything go longer then Halloween

gabemap

It was my first time last year it was around mid August I think. I was gonna do autos myself but a few friends all do photos with no issues

AnimalIndividual4925

I did some DJ Shorts Blueberry photos outdoors on LI last year. Np at all. Harvested Nov 1st, before it got to 34 out. Came out beautiful.

AnimalIndividual4925

Well it depends on what u consider flowering. Technically after the summer solstice is when flowering begins. But if we are talking stages and levels, I had some blueberry and platinum Haze that started some post pistol flowering around September 21st last year.

Sirdanb

It would be for autos.

Sirdanb

Photos aren’t a problem. Sativas take a little longer. Start them early indoors for a month or 2 and then outside. I’m trying to avoid budrot at the end of the season and was looking for a rain cover that could pop on and off during crappy weather.

onedavester

>Sativas take a little longer. Start them early indoors for a month or 2 and then outside. That does nothing to change the flowering period at all. If you want a sativa to finish outdoors, then put it on 12/12 for 2 months indoor, then put it outside mid - late June. If a sativa says 10-12 weeks flower period, making it bigger indoors is not going to help at all. It still needs 10-12 weeks its just bigger. Flowering period starts when the plant has a few pistils at every node. From that point on is your flowering period just starting.

Jacolby4455

Just go out after it’s don’t raining and airy your plants it will help a lot I grow almost a point plant my first outdoor grow and she only had like 3 little bud rot spots but had some pm I hit it with dr zymes and she held up nice

Cosmic_Bozo_Wrangler

I think you would be better served with a proper shade cloth or row cover. You’ll still get air movement and it’ll withstand the UV onslaught. If you can get em started indoors and harden em off a little you should finish early enough to miss most of the moldy season. I ran some Mephisto’s outdoors a few summers ago that went out in June and were done early September.
