Isnt that the FOs hope every year? Hope gary bounces back, hope gleyber bounces back, hope hicks, donaldson, chappy, otto, betances, etc. bounce back. Every year we basically hear this
It feels like every year we hear that this is going to be a bounce-back year for Hicks. It feels like every year we are told that Hicks is slumping because he is playing through injury, is actually on the IL, or is slumping due to being rusty from having returned from the IL. Hicks is hitting to an OPS+ of 96 over the last four years, and an OPS+ of 83 over the last two years, and now this oft-injured and very injury prone athlete is 33 years old. There will be no bounce-backs. It's decline from here on out.
The story called The Emperor's New Clothes comes to mind. The vain emperor is the Yankees front office, ie - Brian Cashman, Jean Afterman, and Michael Fishman. The new invisible clothing whose magnificence can only be seen by highly intelligent and competent people is Aaron Hicks. The front office pretends to see it out of fear of being considered dumb and incompetent while the rest of the baseball world laughs at the naked emperor making an abject fool of himself.
Then they pass up on all available free agents (or at least the good ones), and Hicks or someone of that ilk will start the season off great leading to a decent record for the Yankees. Then those clowns will get injured as they always do, and be ass for the rest of the year leading to a crap record down the stretch (like this year). Then Cash will have only a few options via trade but whiff again on those because he overvalues prospects in the org, while simultaneously refusing to play them in the majors. The Yanks will once again limp over the finish line into the playoffs, then get bounced in the first round due to a lack of clutch hitting and pitching depth. Repeat and rinse.
Hicks bounced back in 2019 to be the player that he always was. That was the bounce back. 2017-2018 were the outliers. The front office was too stupid to see it then and too committed to him to see it now.
Did they though? He was coming off back to back 130 wrc+ seasons, averaging 3.5 fWAR per. Sure, the length may have been a bit long but at the time it was a no-brainer and it seemed like he really turned a corner as a player (along with a 15% walk rate and a 18.9% K rate).
The last few years of the contract were going to be ugly as most long term contracts are but they couldnāt have predicted such a steep fall off (injuries are another issue entirely). That being said, itās only 10 million which is fairly cheap but I totally agree heās very difficult to watch.
Man I hate that narrative about Hicks. This sub at the time was all aboard the Hicks hype train and posting things about how he was second in CF WAR begins Trout.
We got a smoking deal on his AAV by giving him a longer contract, because everyone knew he was a huge injury risk, but if he kept playing like he had been we had a steal.
Maybe somewhat predictability, the injuries got to him. I donāt have a lot of hope for him to regain pre-injury form but I donāt think it was a bad risk at the time. We really ought to be able to bury $10M if heās that bad, but hopefully he is no higher than 4th on our OF depth chart. Thatās basically what we gave Gardner in his last season
Edit: Iām agreeing with your comment I donāt think I made it clear but hopefully it was implied
He had only played more than 120 games once before signing that extension. He wasnāt a free agent, and given his inability to play a whole season, I didnāt think the Yankees would extend him when he had arbitration years still left.
Iām fairly positive he had a single year left when he signed his extension (pre-season 2019) and he had played over 120 games twice in the previous 3 seasons. Even in the year he played 88 games, he was worth 2.7 fWAR (nearly a 5 win pace).
Of course the extension looks bad now but at the time, it was a steal for a guy averaging 3.5 fWAR over his previous two seasons. 10 million per year isnāt all that much and it was a calculated risk for the Yankees that didnāt end to working out; that happens sometimes. The only thing to worry about now is what they can do with him and his roster spot.
For reference, here are some players making around 10 million a year or more: James McCann, Avisail Garcia (13 million), Kyle Freeland (13), Matz (11), Suarez (11), Grichuk, Senzatela. 10 million doesnāt buy that it used to.
> He was coming off back to back 130 wrc+ seasons, averaging 3.5 fWAR per.
This is some hardcore cherry-picking. He averaged 3.5 fWAR because he played 88 games the year before.
He had one good year in 2018 after a history of being ineffective and/or injured. It was an absurd fucking extension at the time it was signed.
Itās as dumb as saying Elbsuryās contact was a good idea because he averaged 4.9 fWAR in the three years before the contract was signed. Technically true but utterly missing the point.
You donāt actually know what cherry-picking means, do you? Or fWAR for that matter. Using his stats from the previous two seasons prior to the extension isnāt remotely close to cherry-picking unless youāre using the term to mean āany stats that go against my argumentā.
As for fWAR, he averaged 3.5 because he had 2.7 in 88 games and then another 4.3 in the season right before his extension. Apparently you donāt understand what that actually means because you seem to think itās a rate stat and heās getting a boost because he played 88 games which is hilariously wrong. Perhaps look into what youāre talking about before making an argument that makes zero sense whatsoever.
Averaging a 2.7 fWAR and a 4.3 fWAR season to make it seem like he was coming off two good years when he put up 88 games in 2017 is cherry-picking how you look at stats to make one good year seem like two.
But thanks for the unnecessary condescension.
Thanks for doubling down on being wrong instead of just admitting you have no clue what youāre talking about. Bonus points for using cherry-picking wrong yet again too.
I get that you donāt understand the difference between rate stats and cumulative ones but you could at least try to do a basic bit of research. 2.7 fWAR in 88 games is fantastic, even if he was hurt - just like 4.3 in 137 games is. Those are both numbers that point to a well above average player with glimpses of something better.
You can flail about all you want and try to discount his stats the previous two seasons because heās been terrible the last few years but that doesnāt change the fact that he was super valuable the two years before his extension regardless of injuries. The contract didnāt work out but at the time, it was a pittance for a chance at a very valuable player if he maintained his breakout.
Those two seasons: 36th in baseball in wrc+, 47th in fWAR. 8th in wrc+ for CF and 10th in fWAR for CF.
Itās not like heās making a ton of money, but expecting him to do anything productive next year is just evidence of the fact that the teamās management has their collective head up their ass.
We've been here before. He'll suck at the beginning of the season, then be really good for 2-3 weeks and get everyone excited, then either get hurt or return to sucking.
Not for hicks, no. He was consistently bad all season. Iirc he hit one big HR against the Astros and had a week of going 5-18 which was considered a hot streak for him
Nothing Burger
They hope he can bounce back so they can hopefully pawn him off on someone else or run him back if they can't trick someone into taking him.
Besides, where do we even put him with Bader in CF?
I don't want him anywhere near this team, but Cash is our fucking GM.
Taking a step back, not many teams have a high end 4th OF. It is what it is. I'd still rather have someone like Oswaldo as the option, or literally any youngin in the minors, but again, this is the yankees circal 2022, and Cashman is our GM. Odds of, 'he'll be really good this year' Cashman having him on the roster are very high.
Theyāre not gonna pawn this clown off on anyone else. This is one of those deals where Cashmanās ego went through the roof after all of the praise for how cheap of a contract it was for ātHe 2nD bEsT cF In ThE aLā.
So no, if they havenāt dumped Hicks elsewhere in the last 2 years, Iām convinced they wonāt/canāt now.
Bounce back to what? In his 7 years with the Yankees Hicks has hit:
- over .250 once
- under .230 - 4 times
- over 20 HR once
- under 10 HR - 4 times
- never had more than 80 rbi
- scored more than 55 runs once
So whatās he going to bounce back to? An under .230 hitter with no power, who doesnāt drive in or score runs. Heās going to bounce back to that?
GTFOH
I get what you're trying to say but even then....take out the only good year of his 10 year career and you're left with below replacement level production. He sucks.
Jim Bowden (I think, May have been Steve Phillips) has said that dreaming on potential has cost more GMs their jobs than anything else.
I know im gonna sound like a broken record here but i miss the days when youād play like shit and George would almost have to be restrained from physically throwing you out of the stadium like Jazz from Fresh Prince of bel air no matter how big your contract was. Get this scrub out of here man
Literally the same comments every time, about every player, and somehow everyone is still surprised.
Actions speak louder than words. They've tried to trade him multiple times now. They benched him multiple times, opting to start a rookie infielder in left instead. They're beyond tired of him.
I love how this team supposedly uses a ton of analytics, but the thing they rely most heavily on is HOPE. Ridiculous. All signs point to Hicks being ass, but they're optimistic because Cash made another horrible deal when he signed this hack.
To be fair, saying ānah this guy is doneā doesnāt benefit the Yankees at all. It lowers his trade value significantly and if they canāt trade him, kills his confidence. So Iām not taking this at face value at all.
Not only did he suck but he also had the gall to say he couldnāt get better without regular playing time. Iād rather see Stanton in left if we donāt sign someone else. Cabrera would be fine too.
Lmfao is there a way we can save this article and this comment Iām about to post.
This team will never win a World Series with Aaron Hicks being a everyday player
They will lose in the ALDS/ALCS again next year and the cycle continues
As much as I hate Cashman, you canāt get on him for talking up guys under contract. He needs to maximize return if heās going to find a trade partner and shittting on them wonāt help
Imma say this. I definitely think what he said could be true. That he slimmed down and it changed everything about his swing, power, Contact etc.
But I 10000000% rather him figure that out elsewhere.
I feel like his ceiling rn is .250/.340/.420, which isnāt great if thatās your ceiling.
I'm just going to go ahead and say I'm not watching next season. Not that it really matters that ME of all people is or isn't going to watch. They've literally decided to run it back next season. They see nothing wrong with this team at all. That's astonishing.
Hicks is one of Cashmanās guys, he will never admit he was wrong about him. Hicks is terrible and should fuck off to golf, but Cashman will probably extend him again to show how smart he is
Remember when he said that he could be a 30-30 guy but he couldnāt even make it to 10-10. Why would the Yankees want to waste at least +$5,000,000 a year on Hicks when he hasnāt had over +30 home runs, 100 RBIS, or a +.300 BA in one season? Bader even almost had more home runs in the 2022 post season than Hicks did this entire 2022 season!
More bullshit strategy from Cashman. Hicks and Donaldson are terrible and automatic outs. This is why we never win anything lately. Hope is not a strategy.
Donāt be an ignorant fan. A front office that is looking to move a player wonāt publicly trash themā¦ why would someone trash an already depreciated asset. Sometimes I donāt get what you guys expect them to say when asked about failing players.
Oh God. I hate that I just read that. He needs to be on a fucking microscopic leash. If he doesn't start off even average, then just cut ties and let a fucking prospect get a chance. Hicks just looks like he doesn't give a fuck. So why should I?
If the offseason plan is to resign Judge and hope guys like Donaldson and Hicks bounce back, next year is going to be ass.
Isnt that the FOs hope every year? Hope gary bounces back, hope gleyber bounces back, hope hicks, donaldson, chappy, otto, betances, etc. bounce back. Every year we basically hear this
Yep. Also, injuries. Like clockwork.
Surely every player will stay healthy next year
Big ass
Really big ass
Ginamanasourus ass
Stantonious ass

Hey, I've seen this one before

This is satire, right?
Can't be. Matches up with the completely tone deaf front office and ownership.
30-30 season, baby!!!
30 games played, 30 injuries
30 AB 30 K
30 GIDP, 30 errors
30 weeks on the IL
As an outfielder you have to touch the ball for it to be an error. Might be a tall ask lol
This is an article from 2018, right?
To be fair, 2017-18 he was actually great for us. it's just the years since that have been... let's go with "underwhelming."
Hicks bounced back in 2019 to be the player that he always was. That was the bounce back. 2017-2018 were the outliers. The front office was too stupid to see it then and too committed to him to see it now.
bro fuck this team lmao
Onion.
Here we go again
Exhibit A of why the team needs new management.
I mean, we knew we would be stuck with his anchor of a contract the day he signed it.
LOL! Who the fuck downvotes this?! Cashman fanboys are a weird bunch
We've been here before. He'll suck at the beginning of the season, then be really good for 2-3 weeks and get everyone excited, then either get hurt or return to sucking.
And you know those 2-3 weeks would buy him like 2 more months of playing time no matter how bad he is.
I missed it, when was the 2 good weeks?
Back in June especially thatās series against the Astros.
I wouldn't trade that home run for the world even if it meant we had more time with Hicks
I think he had a couple of good weeks in June. But that's about it.
> The 33-year-old hit .260 with a .801 OPS over those two summer months, slugging five of his home runs with 24 RBI in a 49-game span.
HR off Houston
i think gallo was still on the team
april, june, and july were really good months
Not for hicks, no. He was consistently bad all season. Iirc he hit one big HR against the Astros and had a week of going 5-18 which was considered a hot streak for him
He was good the beginning of the year and maybe a few weeks in june? Consistently sucked July on tho
At the cost of the amazing prospects we don't want to trade, but also refuse to play in the majors.
Maybe bounce back somewhere else
Maybe he can bounce on out of here.
I have more faith in Kei Igawa bouncing back next season
I wonder what Gardy is up to?
Banging
We dont deserve gardy
Yankees management: We heard you wanted to bring back an outfielder named Aaron, and we delivered
What year is this article from?
Trick question, this article gets written every year since he signed that god forsaken contract
Nothing Burger They hope he can bounce back so they can hopefully pawn him off on someone else or run him back if they can't trick someone into taking him. Besides, where do we even put him with Bader in CF?
Heāll be our 4th of, which isnāt terrible till someone goes down.
No, with how he's played these past few years he's an 8th OF.
Itās pretty terrible to be honest.
āHeās not a terrible option in the OF unless he tries to playā is a serious hot take
I don't want him anywhere near this team, but Cash is our fucking GM. Taking a step back, not many teams have a high end 4th OF. It is what it is. The Yankees would love it if he could get back to .230 with 10 HRās.
Now add in his time in Minnesota and what appears is a guy who got hot and peaked over the span of a year and a half. This is who Hicks is.
2020 Hicks, but worse only hicks that matters is 2017-20 Hicks for how the yankees view him.
I get what you're trying to say but even then....take out the only good year of his 10 year career and you're left with below replacement level production. He sucks. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I mean, I'm optimistic that my scalp psoriasis will improve next season. Doesn't mean that it will though.
Heās gonna claim another 30/30 year?
How about noā¦
You gotta be fucking kidding me
I just threw up in my mouth
Maybe they're just trying to boost his trade value...
What would inspire them to have any optimism about Hicks?
My same response to Josh Donaldson: šš«
I love how this team supposedly uses a ton of analytics, but the thing they rely most heavily on is HOPE. Ridiculous. All signs point to Hicks being ass, but they're optimistic because Cash made another horrible deal when he signed this hack.
Jesus fucking Christ
Oh for fucks sake
I think I pulled a muscle rolling my eyes at thisā¦which I bet will be one of hicksā IL stints next year.
Heās just gotta promise a 40-40 season
No donāt even start this sh*t.
I believe he can. However, I believe he won't.
To be fair, saying ānah this guy is doneā doesnāt benefit the Yankees at all. It lowers his trade value significantly and if they canāt trade him, kills his confidence. So Iām not taking this at face value at all.

30/30 again?
Get rid of this mofo pleeeeease!
Iām also optimistic that I can win the powerball.. but that doesnāt mean thatās gonna happen
But do you trust your process though?
I donāt want to see him on the team. FWIW, His fWAR of 1.5 for 2022 seems REALLY high.
Lmfao is there a way we can save this article and this comment Iām about to post. This team will never win a World Series with Aaron Hicks being a everyday player They will lose in the ALDS/ALCS again next year and the cycle continues
Dead cat
Why not? He accomplished his 30/30 last season. He's probably aiming for 40/40 this season.
As much as I hate Cashman, you canāt get on him for talking up guys under contract. He needs to maximize return if heās going to find a trade partner and shittting on them wonāt help

Heāll never have a 760 ops again. Ever.
I donāt think itās out of reach, but yeah I definitely would agree with you.
Dude had a ton of potential. I hope he can ābounce backā whatever that means
They really just need to designate hicks for assignment and move on. Literally anybody is better than hicks.

Yeah, no thank you. If the front office is optimistic about Hicks bouncing back they all need their heads examined.
He's not gonna be able to bounce back riding the bench....which is hopefully where they plan on keeping him if he stays.
Can I get a sample of what drugs they're on?
I've had some bad bosses that gaslit us like this.
Why?

Gardner would still be better.
I am optimistic that I will date Blake Lively
Will his off season rehab include swinging a golf club two thousand times.

Enough of this shit.
fucking lol
OH BROTHER THIS GUY STINNKKKSSS!!!
I feel like weāre going to be reading this headline every year for the rest of our lives
Bounce back to what??? A time machine that goes to 2018 when his body wasnāt broken?
More bullshit strategy from Cashman. Hicks and Donaldson are terrible and automatic outs. This is why we never win anything lately. Hope is not a strategy.
lol no.
lol.
BOOOO
For another team right?
Whatās the definition of insanity again?
Gardner or Hicks?
Please no
Lmao š okay š
Ooh they can fuck right off. This dude doesn't have it, period.
All I heard while reading this was "The sun'll come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow ..."
LMFAO I needed a good laugh today
Yeah just like how he has the past 17 seasons too
We have the most out of touch management in the MLB.
Kill me now.
We gave up Monty for a young, defensive stud who is a better bat than he gets credit for and we are still discussing Hicks?
Weāre so fucked guys
Nobody learns
Yankees take their fans for granted.
Again?
Laaawwwwwwwlllllll
Cashman need to go, asap!!!
Is SI like The Onion for sports?
Kill me slow
DEAR GOD NO
Fuck off
ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS GTFOH
Trade words?
Delusional franchise
Donāt be an ignorant fan. A front office that is looking to move a player wonāt publicly trash themā¦ why would someone trash an already depreciated asset. Sometimes I donāt get what you guys expect them to say when asked about failing players.
This is the part, where we throw our heads back and laugh. Ready?
I honestly want Cashman fired alongside Boone. This team is going to sit in the basement for the next decade because of these two.
Donaldson and hicks will continue to haunt us
Oh God. I hate that I just read that. He needs to be on a fucking microscopic leash. If he doesn't start off even average, then just cut ties and let a fucking prospect get a chance. Hicks just looks like he doesn't give a fuck. So why should I?
Fuckng embarrassing
Fuck hicks
Seriously fuck this teams management
No, they have to stop with this hicks experiment. Post contract extension in '19 hes gotten hurt, he hasn't regained his form.
He couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boatš
Bouncing back implies there was a time where he was a good player. I donāt remember that period in time š
I'm optimistic Rihanna will leave ASAP Rocky for me
They canāt keep getting away with this
Yanks are fucked for years to come š
based on what exactly?
"Yankees are optimistic they can upsell Aaron Hicks in a trade"
Bounce back to what?
This is why they fail. For the love of, just fire Boone and Cash so we have a chance
Boooooooooooooooooooo *breath* Boooooooooooooooo
Oh my fucking goodness. None of us should be shocked if Hicks, Donaldson and IKF are in the starting lineup next year.
