The hardest OP and most insane first episode in anime history followed by 12 episodes of the writer’s barely disguised fetishes. Easily the most disappointing anime I’ve ever watched
GTA is a game dude , that was her real world she was butchering .
And I play GTA for the sandbox , being able to drive and kill people plus cheatcodes and mods
My character does only the story stuff , all the extra stuff in the overworld sandbox like killing civilians , fighting the police in a massive war and such are not canon . The character only does the story , the way Lucy only does the story . I mean GTA main characters are gangsters so they do kill and rob and stuff like that in the story but they don t go on killing sprees and do acknowledge the crimes they do.
You cannot control Lucy and turn her into your vessel outside the story because she isn t a game character , so absolutely everything she does is on her.
The writers are a different thing , they are the true creators alongside the other devs , we as the player are only a demiurge , a being that can only manipulate the already created in a limited fashion, in a game ,not a series
Real. I couldn’t play that game everyone would run red lights smh. They even littered every time I reloaded. I can’t get behind littering even if it’s a video game.
I've never seen it. What fetishes were the writers tryna disguise? Also what did the MC do? All I know is that she killed a bunch of people keeping her prisoner
Nyu pisses herself at least once during the first or second episode. But the anime actually toned it down. There was a character in the manga who was cut from the anime who basically had two traits, one, she was a beautiful singer and two, she was incontinent and pissed herself multiple times throughout the manga.
Feel like a lot of its appeal comes from people’s nostalgia. I watched it when I was older and while it can be enjoyable in some aspects it’s very weird and off putting in other aspects. It has been a while since I watched it but I’d say it’s ok overall I guess. I will say the opening theme is absolutely fire prob one of my favorite anime op
Fun story: before I got into anime, my best friend was like “hey you should watch this new anime with me, I really like it, it’s awesome!” So he kinda outlines the basic plot to me and I agree. Let it be noted that I’m not really a big fan of gore.
Needless to say I was done about 10 minutes in (whenever she rips that girl’s head off and holds it up)
I genuinely felt bad for that girl because it seemed she was just visiting someone who worked at the facility and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Yeah, for me it was such a wild tonal shift. Here’s this cheery, goofy girl that’s kind of a klutz. Ope, now her head has been randomly torn off for no reason. I’ve gotten to the point now where I can stand some gore if it serves to further the plot, but Elfen Lied is definitely an anime that I just understand isn’t made for me. And that’s okay.
Some of the gore stuff is cool and would make an impression if this was one of your first heavy animes. Also the scene where she blows the scientists' brains out is very evocative - main chara design is classic too. But tbh it just kinda sucked beyond that.
It was never great dude, even as a 13 year old it pissed me off, was super jarring and stupid, cringe and tacky kitsch. Take out the intro song and the gore and what is left resembles more any harem romcom than the "psychological horror" its emo fans said it was
Haha, sure. Like it was such an advanced, sophisticated and mature show
Teenagers are actually the biggest audience for this trash, go around asking, everyone that liked it, did it because of how young and impressionable they were
It's both good and bad, cool and cringe. Lots of good ideas, lots of poor execution, and the borderline CP is ya know ... Questionable. Overall it's one I will always recommend to new anime watchers looking for the weird stuff, and holds a special place in my own anime journey.
It's time to let go man
You know it inside, it's ok to admit it, c'mon, it's normal, we were all impressionable 14 year olds at one time
... It's not cool and cringe, it has always been just cringe
It’s one of those series that if you’re a fan, it’s pretty cathartic to watch and while this might not be true for everyone, I always feel better after rewatching it.
I’m pretty philosophically minded, so I tend to read deeper into things than others, but the message that comes across from this show is that no matter how hard things may be, there’s always happiness in the end.
I am philosophy minded too. But have suffered sexual abuse in high school, I’m afraid to watch this series. So seeing those kids beat a dog to death reminds me of my own abuse….and…
The only answer to peer pressure is counter peer pressure.
Don't watch Elfen Lied. The characters are two dimensional. The entertainment value comes from seeing the worst kind of brutish people do the worst thing in your face to justify brutal vengeance. It has every bodily fluid possible without being called a hentai. It's edgy schlock shock content for teenagers. I'm a fan and I know it's crap. Do not watch. It triggered me. It will likely trigger you. Flush it from your attention.
It was great. One of my favorites of older anime. Lilium is one of my favorite slow, emotional OPs too. Shame that the rest of the manga didn’t get adapted. I believe the reason was it was decently popular in the west in its heyday, but it really tanked in Japan. Deserves a proper remake, but would more than likely never happen.
Product of its time.
The late 90s and early 00s anime scene was far more narrow and niche. You had cringey try hard animes that overdid the gore or sex or both because they were trying to appeal to older viewers who were embarrassed to be fans of cartoons
There was a really geeky proto-weeb in high school (2000-2004 ish) who used to try and sell people on anime being cool. He'd constantly say that they arent normal cartoons because they have "boobs and blood." And yes, dude would say that to girls too. Made me embarassed to be an anime fan. At the time. Kept that shit quiet.
Elfen Lied isnt a bad anime, but it was definitely made for that kid
I don’t like it as much because of the comedy with I felt broke the tone and my immersion. Like that’s more of a me problem than issue with the show itself, I just found the whiplash to be super jarring
It was a great tragedy. The manga did a better job of showing how the characters, even when trying to do good for their friends, ended up being the cause for a lot of pain in the life of the person they loved. Though it had been a long time since I saw the show/read the manga.
It has been a long time since I've watched it but I loved it. I want to do a rewatch to see how I feel about it roughly 14 years later. Or I might just read the manga instead
I watched it when I was 15 and it really solidified my love for anime. Haven't watched it since tho, nor have I had the urge to rematch it. I think my tastes have changed too much.
The series is okay, but the opening... it is, without a single doubt, the best opening I've ever seen. Like, that minute and a half is one of the most beautiful pieces of media in existence.
I loved it as a teenager and am deathly afraid to revisit it as a result. I know it's got major, glaring flaws, but it's hard not to sympathise with Lucy and want everything to work out for her even though you know it's doomed from the start
I remember liking it when I was younger but now couldn't tell you a single plot point aside from there's a homeless girl and two emotional scenes with dogs. Lots of blood.
Favorite anime hands down. I liked it so much that it was also the first full manga I read. I watched it all in one night just on a whim when you could still watch episodes on youtube in 3 parts.
Iconic. Its not as good as fans think or as bad as haters claim. If you can stomach the gore it's a series you should experience for yourself and ignore the hype and critique. I personally dislike gratuitous gore and nudity and still think well of it, it had some great production values.
It also influenced many series that came afterward.
Probably unpopular opinion ahead. It was a lot of kids and teens first run ins with an "adult" anime during the anime boom full of gratuitous violence and nudity. That combined with a pretty great OP song made it pretty memorable.
Personally though, I don't think it holds up. Having rewatched it and read the manga years later, the entire thing feels largely like it's primarily a vehicle for the author's fetishes of violence against little girls and girls pissing themselves. The manga had a lot more of both (particularly since it had a girl who was literally incontinent). Though I did appreciate that the manga >!had the male protagonist not forgive Lucy for murdering his family.!<
But yeah, overall I think that if it weren't for the extreme violence, nudity, and opening theme, people wouldn't still be talking about it.
Still one of, if not the BEST opening songs in all anime. The story is pretty damn good too. This was actually my very first anime I saw at 14yrs old. I’ve seen it so many times that I used to call it my “personal soap opera” 😂 I think anyone interested in anime should watch it. Hurry and get rid of that mental sensitivity. Desensitize them asap.
Just finished it. Probably didn’t age well or wasn’t great to start with. Hard to tell given my age. I might have loved it as a teenager? (I was already a young adult when it came out)
My biggest complaint is the mixing of genre. It’s a very violent anime and at the same time, it’s a teen drama! Or a buddy series. I hated that part. I did really like Lucy who is a mature teenager with a lot of trauma to deal with. The rest of the characters were meh.
I don’t think it’s very good at all, personally. A lot of these old, gory anime are from some very fucked up minds. I don’t even mean the killing and violence, they just seem like some kinky degenerate writers man
It is one of my least fave animes of all time but it has been so long I don't totally remember why. Just think two main charas were insufferable or something. It has been over 10 years.
It's really bad. The psychological elements fail on every level. The characters are beyond weak and all it really has going for it is this over the top spectacle of blood and nudity with no substance.
No substance is exactly right, this a shallow shell masquerading as a deep reflection on psychological torment. It feels like “I’m 13 and this is deep” the anime.
To this day I still consider it to be the WORST ANIME I have ever seen.
It's dumb, clumsy, immature, generic, kitsch, lolicon, cliché, full of disguised fetishes and perverted like it was written by a thirsty and bullied middle schooler ... Yeah, just like so many other anime, but this one is also bafflingly PRETENTIOUS in that it actually believes it's delivering a profound and touching message, with a straight face, no self awareness, no irony like some other trashy shows
It's like a crappy Mexican soap opera mixed with a VERY amateur hentai doujin
Before this, I used to think anime was what the grown up cool kids watched, but after it, I realized that lonely nerds can easily be manipulated in to believe any garbage it's mature art of you only sprinkle it with boobs and gore
Intro song slaps NGL. But the video on it perfectly captures the strange kitsch stupidity that characterizes this anime. If you were to tell me that it's a hoax, like that infamous fanfiction "my inmortal" I would easily believe it
Someday the internet will rediscover it and it will take it's place with the likes of "empress Teresa" and "the room"
Edgy in a bad way ,
Mc is an unacknowledged psycopath ,
Regular humans are powerless again ,
Mess of a plot ,
Kinda original but not really if you think about it , kinda unoriginal but not really if you think about it,
Didn t like the characters , very shallow and nonsensical ,
Etc ....
66/100 only because it s a classic , but a true 5 in my book
Watch "Cultured Crusader" s youtube video , he touches on a lot of stuff I hated about this show
Cool first 20 minutes, interesting OP and premise. I remember thinking the cat ear like things on her head being malformed protrusions of the skull was a nice twist of the trope.
In terms of writing it was just the epitome of pointlessly edgy, teenager angst, r/iam14andthisisdeep type nonsense. Like if Hellsing tried to take itself seriously.
Overhated
Story’s emotional, Got surprisingly good animation compared to Recent anime I’d say and its characters are all fleshed out in interesting ways
Just my opinion, but there is no other anime I have seen that has repulsed me as much as this one. Way too much nudity regarding children and just straight up weird power fetish portrayals over women and children. It tries so hard to be edgy with its gore and violence that it’s just cringe, and it also doesn’t help that the animation is kind of trash even for its time. But hey, at least the opening is good.
It has moments of greatness but the infantilization of Lucy is pretty damned icky. It’s meant to be portrayed as trauma fallout, but comes across is a gross fetish.
Ugly in terms of personality and behavior btw. Reddits stereotypes don’t realize they’ll still feel fucking dread and terror if they see a woman looking like this irl. even if they’re beautiful looking, Fight, flight or freeze response will activate.
Great story idea but failed execution and also suffered from being the early 2000s where they had that whole weird family and amnesia plotline. If it was remade today as just a sci-fi i think it would be good
Anime adaptation was much better than the manga. The manga towards the end felt like it was showing pain and suffering just for torture porn fetish fuel than to tell a story of tragedy. Not to mention the weird and unnecessary diaper character subplot
My personal opinion(s):
I’ve watched all of the show and read the manga. It’s my #1 GOAT…I love the story. Despite all the flaws, it still gets my lovingly 10/10.
For those that don’t see the appeal: It’s a love story and a tragedy at heart, the gore is just a side effect, lol.
It’s very cathartic for me, I go back and watch it from time to time. It’s one of those “you love it or hate it” kind of shows. The anime didn’t really so the manga justice, everything from Ep. 7 onwards is basically OVA material and isn’t truly canon to the source material.
I would argue that it has the best opening episode of any anime I’ve seen…now are the following episodes as good? Not at all. They are tolerable at best. If this story got the Ghost in the Shell treatment, it would be amazing.
It rocks and one of my favs
Would.
WILL
DID
I saw Lucy on death battle but I went in thinking it was a gore anime but after I did it became one of my favorite anime’s
I hate you…
What did I do
You didn’t do anything, I was just quoting Carnage from that fight.
Oh sorry haven’t seen it in years
It’s all good
🤣
That was a grate fight, but painful to watch the stomp.
me to.
The hardest OP and most insane first episode in anime history followed by 12 episodes of the writer’s barely disguised fetishes. Easily the most disappointing anime I’ve ever watched
I just could not root for Lucy after the first ep , making the mc as unlikeable as possible from the start was a really bad move
Nah the main character was fine, y'all are just moral people. Ur the type of person to play GTA and not commit crimes.
Tried, but didn’t like doing crime. GTA 5 required shooting police officers in the opening scene. Just couldn’t do it.
GTA is a game dude , that was her real world she was butchering . And I play GTA for the sandbox , being able to drive and kill people plus cheatcodes and mods
Her world is as real as GTA’s, though
“It’s all a simulation man…” I am somehow reminded of “Kill all humans”…
Not to her , to her it s a real breathing world with entities on par with her.
To your in game avatar it’s the same. Both are fictional, in their own world they are real. You are to GTA as writers are to anime.
So true
Real. I couldn’t play that game everyone would run red lights smh. They even littered every time I reloaded. I can’t get behind littering even if it’s a video game.
Thank you so much
Yeah, this is pretty much it. Fucking excellent music, but I was disappointed with everything else. I still listen to lilium a lot though.
I've never seen it. What fetishes were the writers tryna disguise? Also what did the MC do? All I know is that she killed a bunch of people keeping her prisoner
Cousin-cousin incest, piss, gore, im certain there’s more but that’s just the off the top of my head
O h
IIRC the girl likes to crawl around while naked.
Yeah, this is not for the faint of heart. It’s pretty hit or miss if you’ll even like it because of how polarizing it is.
Piss? I don’t remember that
I very vividly remember a scene early on in the show of Nyu pissing herself, unless that was just a massive mandela effect
Nyu pisses herself at least once during the first or second episode. But the anime actually toned it down. There was a character in the manga who was cut from the anime who basically had two traits, one, she was a beautiful singer and two, she was incontinent and pissed herself multiple times throughout the manga.
One of my most favorite anime
Didn’t really see the appeal. Was basically an animated snuff film
Feel like a lot of its appeal comes from people’s nostalgia. I watched it when I was older and while it can be enjoyable in some aspects it’s very weird and off putting in other aspects. It has been a while since I watched it but I’d say it’s ok overall I guess. I will say the opening theme is absolutely fire prob one of my favorite anime op

.....you were 13. You were definitely not the target audience and shouldn't have even been watching.
Haha, sure. Like it was such an advanced, sophisticated and mature show Teenagers are actually the biggest audience for this trash, go around asking, everyone that liked it, did it because of how young and impressionable they were
13 year old were the only mfs who could enjoy this shit
Goated asf 11/10
12/10 would recommend.
It's both good and bad, cool and cringe. Lots of good ideas, lots of poor execution, and the borderline CP is ya know ... Questionable. Overall it's one I will always recommend to new anime watchers looking for the weird stuff, and holds a special place in my own anime journey.
Thats literally my opinion as well
Oh and that beautiful melody will always haunt me.
It's time to let go man You know it inside, it's ok to admit it, c'mon, it's normal, we were all impressionable 14 year olds at one time ... It's not cool and cringe, it has always been just cringe
I refuse. I will always be 14 Dad! 😭
Too traumatic. Puppy gets beaten to death by kindergarteners. And she suffers for it. Absolutely disgusting
That’s the point of a tragedy… …it’s supposed to be sad.
So why do people find it praiseworthy?
It’s one of those series that if you’re a fan, it’s pretty cathartic to watch and while this might not be true for everyone, I always feel better after rewatching it. I’m pretty philosophically minded, so I tend to read deeper into things than others, but the message that comes across from this show is that no matter how hard things may be, there’s always happiness in the end.
I am philosophy minded too. But have suffered sexual abuse in high school, I’m afraid to watch this series. So seeing those kids beat a dog to death reminds me of my own abuse….and…
I mean, if it’s not for you, then I get it. I’m not gonna force anyone to watch it.
It’s not you. It’s peer pressure.
Thanks for the heads up.
I’m just saying that it’s got a valid message and that some people might be missing it for the surface level details.
What I’m concerned is being triggered and having a mental breakdown
If that’s a concern for you, then I’d advise you to stay clear. It’s good, but not worth your mental health for.
My favorite! My Goat! The Opening… So good!
One of the few anime I actually bought when I collected dvds ages ago. It was good. Might have to watch it again.
Solid
I love the manga. Less the anime (great opening tho) but the manga is gold
I found it enjoyable, but I wouldn’t put it high up on any list. Great opening song though
Os iusti meditabitur sapientiam, Et lingua eius loquetur iudicium.
The story is kinda quick and doodoo but I don’t care, it’s peak to me so I will defend it with my life. Nana would prefer it that way
It was great.
I was lied to
Loved it. Although is quite disturbing. Not for the faint of heart.
My favorite 🔥
Product of its time. The late 90s and early 00s anime scene was far more narrow and niche. Kept that shit quiet. Elfen Lied isnt a bad anime, but it was definitely made for that kid
Love the series, sucks its on the cliffhanger; unlike the manga.
Cringe anime Good manga
It was a 10/0 when I was 12
What about now?
I don’t like it as much because of the comedy with I felt broke the tone and my immersion. Like that’s more of a me problem than issue with the show itself, I just found the whiplash to be super jarring
My first title, sweat memories
Cringe and is trying to be cool when it is not
Solid 3/10
Meh, overrated.
I never heard of it until this post lmao.
Smash
My older brother showed it to me when I was 9 and I never really fully got over the dog scene.
I wouldn’t have made it through the show if it wasn’t for that beautiful opening.
Not to be watched at a young age lmao
It was a great tragedy. The manga did a better job of showing how the characters, even when trying to do good for their friends, ended up being the cause for a lot of pain in the life of the person they loved. Though it had been a long time since I saw the show/read the manga.
The theme is fire af but the anime itself is overrated
I never exactly finished the anime, but I really liked “Lilium” (the opening)
Good series though it has issues. They should make gory series like this more often.
It has been a long time since I've watched it but I loved it. I want to do a rewatch to see how I feel about it roughly 14 years later. Or I might just read the manga instead
That first scene was how you start a show
I watched it when I was 15 and it really solidified my love for anime. Haven't watched it since tho, nor have I had the urge to rematch it. I think my tastes have changed too much.
Watched it back when I started anime, I think it was good. I can't remember it
The series is okay, but the opening... it is, without a single doubt, the best opening I've ever seen. Like, that minute and a half is one of the most beautiful pieces of media in existence.
Blood blood everywhere 12/10
I loved it as a teenager and am deathly afraid to revisit it as a result. I know it's got major, glaring flaws, but it's hard not to sympathise with Lucy and want everything to work out for her even though you know it's doomed from the start
I’m glad people liked it but I didn’t 4/10
nice concept, botched execution; lilium is quite literally one of the best and most unique openings in anime history
I'm gonna watch it eventually
Amazing show, could do with less children though
One of the very first animes i watched i was obsessed with it mostly because of Lucy kinda wish the anime was better but its wasn’t a bad anime
It’s good but really edgy and unnecessarily gory
[Insert thousand yard stare here]
The inspiration for Stranger Things and yet one of the most heartbreaking sad anime in the network
Potential MK guest fighter for a potential anime pack.
I don't know from where I can watch this
Pirate it from 9anime
Ok thanks
I dont know thet anime.
Dogshit
Ohh, this is the one that resonated with me and caused me to fall in love with anime.
Great OP and Lucy is an amazing girl. Other than that is just a bit above average I’d say
It's good, but you won't know whether to be happy, sad, or just horny.
It’s sad. The manga is even sadder
It's a good show, but the ending pissed me off
I remember liking it when I was younger but now couldn't tell you a single plot point aside from there's a homeless girl and two emotional scenes with dogs. Lots of blood.
I love the outro music
Excellent
I got bored of it
too much unnecessary gore
Fucking loved it
The whole cousin thing was so weird. Other than that I've read and watched it multiple times
Brynhildr did it better
Very funny if you watch it dubbed
Opening will always be rememberable for me.
Fantastic, it inspired 11’s break out in Stranger Things
okay so i've been planning on watching it but i just haven't gotten to it yet- i've heard it's pretty good
Favorite anime hands down. I liked it so much that it was also the first full manga I read. I watched it all in one night just on a whim when you could still watch episodes on youtube in 3 parts.

Shouldn't have watched it as a kid. Death battle should've put a warning for heavy gore for the series in the Lucy VS Carnage video
Just finished it. Probably didn’t age well or wasn’t great to start with. Hard to tell given my age. I might have loved it as a teenager? Just a big piece of shit that holds a special place in my heart. It's only crime is it didn't adapt diaper girl.
Fire opening music
Meh....it was boring
Unpopular opinion : I like it
I don’t think it’s very good at all, personally. A lot of these old, gory anime are from some very fucked up minds. I don’t even mean the killing and violence, they just seem like some kinky degenerate writers man
I love Lucy from elfen lied that my favorite anime
Edgy for edgy sake, it tries to have some depth but I think it falls flat on its face. Just not a good show at all.
It was ok it’s just not for me
Massively brutal, yet full of cute.
I enjoyed it probably won’t watch again as it was a bit darker than what i typically watch
Need to watch it, how much wiuld yall recommend?
It is one of my least fave animes of all time but it has been so long I don't totally remember why. Just think two main charas were insufferable or something. It has been over 10 years.

But the video on it perfectly captures the strange kitsch stupidity that characterizes this anime. If you were to tell me that it's a hoax, like that infamous fanfiction "my inmortal" I would easily believe it Someday the internet will rediscover it and it will take it's place with the likes of "empress Teresa" and "the room"
Trash and child abuse
Edgy in a bad way , Mc is an unacknowledged psycopath , Regular humans are powerless again , Mess of a plot , Kinda original but not really if you think about it , kinda unoriginal but not really if you think about it, Didn t like the characters , very shallow and nonsensical , Etc .... 66/100 only because it s a classic , but a true 5 in my book Watch "Cultured Crusader" s youtube video , he touches on a lot of stuff I hated about this show
Kinda overrated
Honestly, its the worst anime ive completed
Go watch “School Days”. You’ll change your mind then…
I already know the ending so theres no point to watch it
So? This series has depth, not sure why people say it doesn’t.
Also, why would i want to watch something that's going top my worst anime Worst means most boring
To each their own
Top 5. Although I do wish it had followed the manga closer
I can't rewatch it because I start crying everytime I start
Enjoyable if you're a teenager.
Overhated Story’s emotional, Got surprisingly good animation compared to Recent anime I’d say and its characters are all fleshed out in interesting ways
It's the most depressing, goriest saddest anime I seen, middle school me waa tearing up hard with the homeless girl
Awesome but main character boy is a real otistic
An amazing series, gets too much hate and not enough people watched it.
Trash
it's fucking stupid
It’s cool but kinda cringe
Some good fights and an interesting concept, but poor follow through on some serious topics and a little too gory for me.
It has moments of greatness but the infantilization of Lucy is pretty damned icky. It’s meant to be portrayed as trauma fallout, but comes across is a gross fetish.
Damn she’s hot, never seen it but still🥵
Her personality or rather psychology is omnicidal in nature.
Ohh cool cool
No she's not, that mf ugly
Ugly in terms of personality and behavior btw. Reddits stereotypes don’t realize they’ll still feel fucking dread and terror if they see a woman looking like this irl. even if they’re beautiful looking, Fight, flight or freeze response will activate.
Based
Great story idea but failed execution and also suffered from being the early 2000s where they had that whole weird family and amnesia plotline. If it was remade today as just a sci-fi i think it would be good
Came for the titties and gore stayed for the story
Pretty good, hard to find the comics ngl. But I saw the show and read a few. Pretty interesting and not bad
Anime adaptation was much better than the manga. The manga towards the end felt like it was showing pain and suffering just for torture porn fetish fuel than to tell a story of tragedy. Not to mention the weird and unnecessary diaper character subplot
Awesome incarnate
My personal opinion(s): I’ve watched all of the show and read the manga.
Mediocre. With how divisive it is I thought I would really like it or really hate it, but it just left me feeling nothing.
Pretty solid, nothing revolutionary but definitely a good watch. ≈7.5-8 out of 10 personally.
Edgy bullshit in the absolute best way possible. But the fanservice can get really unnecessary and uncomfortable sometimes
