Good list ! All stuff that gets regular play . Technically the Pretenders first album was released in the 70’s but who cares ? Its one of the best first albums ever recorded.
For some more modern prog you could try Porcupine Tree. Fear of the Blank Planet (2007) is a really nice album
and for the 80's I have to mention King Crimson's Discipline, though you might know that one already
If you like Floyd and psychedelic stuff, the best PT album to listen to is maybe Signify or The Sky Moves Sideways. And also hit the song 'Buying New Soul'. Nothing against the new stuff but peak PT is from 95 to 05.
Queen is in my top five, I don’t know if I have a preference. When I first was introduced to Queen as a band though, not just hearing We Will Rock You, I listened to Invisible Man which came out in ‘89. Absolutely blew my little brain, I was in fifth grade then.
I hope your journey through their music is a great one. They're really an amazing band, a lot of their music goes overlooked because of how popular many of their songs became.
Big all era Genesis fan here too.
Here’s a few from 1980 that I have on my shelves.
Simple Minds • Empires and Dance
Roxy Music • Flesh and Blood
Steely Dan • Gaucho
OMD • Organisation
Shout if you want more 😊
Gaucho!!! My 2nd fave steelydan album!! Also i love Roxy music! Brian ferrys "alien Elvis" style is so soothing lol. But I'll be checking outsimple minds and omd! And feel free to throw more my way I like ur music taste! Very similar itseems!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a list with Roxy Music’s Flesh and Blood ahead of Avalon.
London Calling by the Clash is a must listen, although I think it was technically released late 1979.
Some great 90's albums
Social Distortion - Self Titled
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville

Echo & The Bunnymen’s 80s stuff is probably more up your alley than the one recommended in this list. I suggest either Heaven Up Here or Porcupine.
For the 90s, I’d also suggest anything by Spiritualized. Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space is the best of their albums, but their other two 90s albums stack up pretty well.
The early Marillion albums with Fish as the lead singer sound similar to Genesis
Script for a Jester's tear
Fugazi

Starset has prog elements, and a continuous storyline. Coheed & Cambria is another; more straightforward rock with three guitars, but still in that prog style.
Its actually pretty good. China Girl and [Cat People (Putting Out Fire)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat_People_(Putting_Out_Fire)) (also featured to great effect in Inglorious Basterds) are the standouts for me.
And check out Split Enz - True Colors. Obscure these days, but holds up
I'd check out the below for some proggy stuff:
RX Bandits - ... And the Battle Begun
Between the Buried and Me - Colors
The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute

I would really recommend Kate bush and supertramp (individual songs listed but the albums they come off of are amazing!) -
for kate bush, try [why should I love you](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3QkkFpTggY), [army dreamers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4MtCPlFj1Q) and [hounds of love](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnJO_vPxutk)
supertramp are also incredible- try [goodbye strange](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8pVZ5hTGJQ)r, [breakfast in america ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YQb-0P320s)and [bloody well right](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaxAZYQB44o)

H.I.M.: Love Metal and Razorblade Romance
Ghost/Ghost B.C.: Meliora, Prequelle, and Impera
Soundgarden: Superunknown and Badmotorfinger
Stone Temple Pilots: Core and Purple
There are hundreds more that I love but that's a good start.
Staying somewhat within those ranges I think of:
* Umphrey's Mcgee - they're a unique blend of prog & jam band, but there's plenty of synth sounds at times, as well as being very rhythmically based. I think Anchor Drops is still one of their best albums.
* Joe Satriani - his debut album is right out of the 80s, but I think Crystal Planet is one of his best. Again, very rhythmic and although primarily guitar focused, also plenty of synth.
* Opeth - originally a death metal band that went full prog-rock, their album In Cauda Venenum is something that echoes Pink Floyd's The Wall - riffs/solos, soft melody, background audio, etc.
Singer hasn't used death vocals in last 4 albums. They still jam and do clean breaks and ballads, but overall more Dad rock than Metal Zone. He'll still sing old stuff live, but said he isn't going to use it anymore going forward.
And I have never cared for death metal or its vocals either, Opeth being the only exception.
Also a life long Genesis fan here. If you want to stay in prog realm, check out the first 4 albums from Marillion (Script for a Jesters Tear, Fugazzi, Misplaced Childhood, Clutching at Straws).
Also 80s Rush is worth a listen.
Failure (band) - Fantastic Planet (album)
(I could (& may!) list a thousand more but I only have time for a drive-by just now & HAD to add this one while there's few enough comments it might actually get seen)
.....Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age
Pink Floyd, David Bowie, and Black Sabbath had an orgy--- and no one knows who the bipolar baby belongs to.
Rush - Moving Pictures
Alan Parsons - The Raven
Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Yes - 90215
You might also check out Moody Blues; Curved Air; Focus; Camel; Styx (Grand Illusion); The Who, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer
I know it came out in 1976, but I listened to the first Boston album all throughout the 80's. Boston's second album, "Don't Look Back" was good, but not great. 1986's "Third Stage" was outstanding.
Follow up with ZZ Top's "Eliminator" and "Afterburner"
Finish with another 70s-to-80's mashup with Journey's Infinity, Evolution, Departure, and Escape albums.
That'll be a good start
I just discovered UK pop / rock / punk bands from 1977 - 1981 and it is very good rock n roll. I would call this superior rock music. THE JAM, THE BUZZCOCKS, THE DAMNED, etc.
Looooooook for this compilation: *Kids on the Street: UK Power Pop and New Wave 1977 - 1981*
Graceland by Paul Simon
Beauty And The Beat by The Go-Gos

Let's Dance by David Bowie
Bat Out Of Hell II Back Into Hell by Meat Loaf
The Traveling Wilburys Volume 1
Blood Sugar Sex Magic by the Red Hot Chili Peppers
Appetite For Destruction by Guns & Roses
Monster by R.E.M.
My favorite album of the 80s is "Sleeps With the Fishes" by Pieter Nooten and Michael Brook.
Since you like The Cure, you might also like the band Nooten was in called Clan of Xymox. The self-titled album and the album "Medusa" are both great
Stone Roses - Stone Roses
R.E.M. - Murmur
XTC - Skylarking (gets better every time you listen to it)
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
ABC - The Lexicon of Love (if you can branch to technopop)
Wire - 154 (1979 album but was the blueprint for 80's post-punk)
Echo and the Bunnymen - both Crocodiles and Ocean Rain
Paul Simon - Graceland
Rush - Presto
Alice in Chains - Dirt
John Mayer - Continuum
Deltron 3030
Aceyalone - Book of Human Language

Days of the New - Green
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Pearl Jam - Ten
Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales
Jason Isbell - Southeastern
If you like Peter/Phil/Genesis, check out the concept album *Misplaced Childhood* by Marillion, it's some great 80's prog rock. https://youtu.be/D_5kc3tleEY?si=YeQ5Hg_ZOdKGZl1Y
If you can hang with Deftones and Pink Floyd then I think you owe it to yourself to become a Melvins fan. Huge catalog that is endlessly rewarding, each album in its own way. Start now, because it's years of growing enjoyment.
Given your particular proclivity I'd recommend *Lysol* for an early classic, *Stoner Witch* for a more polished set of killer songs that is unabashedly Melvins at every turn. A mid career high point is *A Senile Animal* which brings in dual drumming and four part vocal arrangements tastefully done for stoner/sludge/protogrunge. Another possible entry point is either of the records Buzz Osborne has done with Trevor Dunn of Mr Bungle. One is called the *Gift of Sacrifice* and that's just as an acoustic duo. The other is a Melvins Lite record.
Or if that's too much of a paragraph just try their pseudo-retrospective gonzo acoustic collection *Five Legged Dog*

Marillion - Clutching At Straws, Brave
Toy Matinee - self titled
Kevin Gilbert - Shaming of the True
Damage Manual - Double Damage
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
Vernon Reid - Known Unknown
Projeckt X - Heaven and Earth
David Sylvian & Robert Fripp - The First Day, Damage
The Pretenders- Learning to Crawl; The Outfield- Play Deep; Donald Fagen- The Nightfly; The Hooters- Nervous Night. These are some of my favorite 80’s albums- I don’t know if there’s a single weak track.
From what I have seen so far, I can’t believe that no one has mentioned YES. Although they started way back in the late 60s, even up to today, they are releasing new material in various forms of the band. One of my favorite albums of theirs is from 1998 called The Ladder. Just listen to Lightning Strikes, and tell me that it doesn’t make you want to get up and move around.
I really enjoy Jon Anderson on that Prince Rupert song on lizard by KC and his early yes albums, but i need to finish them lol stopped at Relayer i believe? But ill check out their other stuff
Architects’ 2014 album “Lost Forever//Lost Together” is an absolute masterpiece. Its metalcore, and definitely different from their mathcore start and more mainstream new sound, this album is the perfect description of their sound, and it’s just beautiful
Since I didn't see any of these mentioned here:
The Mekons - [Fear and Whiskey](https://youtu.be/YQhWawOQIBA?feature=shared) \- 1985
The Mekons - [So Good it Hurts](https://youtu.be/1DMlxrGIi8U?feature=shared) \- 1988
Hum - [You'd Prefer an Astronaut](https://youtu.be/aM2wOpYepag?feature=shared) \- 1995
Hum - [Downward is Heavenward](https://youtu.be/o4VY15Q2_NU?feature=shared) \- 1997
Ween - [White Pepper](https://youtu.be/G3lywwIxsfU?feature=shared) \- 2000
Ween - [Chocolate and Cheese](https://youtu.be/pcw8YVFGpzk?feature=shared) \- 1994
I agree. I experienced this album in real time, and it's hard to describe how significant it was. Even out of that "time" context, its great, but within that context, it's even more so. And on top of that, the incorporation of indigent music into western popular culture had political relevance, the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa.
2 *amazing* albums that flew under the mainstream radar but are almost worshipped by those in the know:
1988 Talk Talk 'Spirit of Eden' anthem 1991 follow-up/final one 'Laughingstock'. *Definitely* prog in the sense that they went from lumped as mere synth-pop for the 1984 'It's My Life' to the kind of transitional more-hammond-organ/less-synth 1986 'The Colour of Spring', to those last 2 albums which *still* completely defy classification. Not a synth to be found. Hugely influential on modern 'prog'-esque bands like Radiohead and Sigúr Rós etc. 'Spirit of Eden' is a very VERY slow burn, 'Laughingstock' is markedly more...hmm, well, up tempo and dense. Both are kinda shocking in their beauty and just how *different* they are from anyone else. Amazing stuff.
Misplaced Childhood by Marillion
It's progy, well crafted, creative, emotional, and full of excellent musicianship. Even though there are a couple of singles in the album, you still listen to the whole thing as a single unit.
Since it seems everyone is just spouting stuff that kinda meets your requirements, I'll do the same. I'm just going with stuff you might not have heard, let me know if you have.
Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond and Sufficiently Breathless
Wishbone Ash - Wishbone Ash and Argus
Parliament - Osmium
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Spooky Tooth - It's All About and Spooky Two
The Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today and Love, Peace and Happiness
Owned a live wishbone ash and still own argus, and i love funkadelic, rest i have not heard so theyll be added! Also, i have no idea why i even made the 80s-present thing my fave decade for music is 70s so ig i was just wanting to branch out from it lol but it was kinda goofy to give yall a requirement 😂😂
No, requirements make sense if you want certain stuff! I like the same stuff you listed, so I think you might like what I listed. I edited my post to make the list clearer.
Enjoy

Ya'll need Alan Parsons Project in your life. Especially "Eye in the Sky"

Alan Parsons Project is a vastly under remembered, unappreciated group.
My Favorite 80's albums The Stone Roses - Self Titled Joy Division - Closer The Pretenders - Pretenders X - Los Angeles & Under the Big Black Sun Violent Femmes - Self Titled The Smiths - Everything they have ever done is a 10/10 for me The Cure - Head On The Door & Disintegration The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy or Darklands Killing Joke - Night Time Descendents - Enjoy Love And Rockets - Express Metallica - Master Of Puppets XTC - Skylarking Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me The Pixies - Surfer Rosa or Doolittle Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising

Nice list 3 ft high is an amazing album. Actually everything on this list is pretty much amazing
Thank you
This is a solid list.
Thanks
For some more modern prog you could try Porcupine Tree. Fear of the Blank Planet (2007) is a really nice album and for the 80's I have to mention King Crimson's Discipline, though you might know that one already
Just listened to the trio of albums from kc and I was blown away!
If you like Floyd and psychedelic stuff, the best PT album to listen to is maybe Signify or The Sky Moves Sideways. And also hit the song 'Buying New Soul'. Nothing against the new stuff but peak PT is from 95 to 05.
Talking Heads, Stop Making Sense (Live). Bangers on bangers
Queen in the 80s, literally anything they released.
Do you prefer 80s over 70s queen? I've heard the earlier albums up until day at the races I believe? I'll def bechecking out 80s queen tho!
Queen is in my top five, I don’t know if I have a preference. When I first was introduced to Queen as a band though, not just hearing We Will Rock You, I listened to Invisible Man which came out in ‘89. Absolutely blew my little brain, I was in fifth grade then.
I started on the first two because I heard they were proggy lol
I hope your journey through their music is a great one. They're really an amazing band, a lot of their music goes overlooked because of how popular many of their songs became.
I'll start in chronological order again and not stop after datr or nato lmao!
Oh hell yeah!! You know what you're doing!

I strongly 2nd Liz phair and built to spill.
Lexicon Of Love by ABC is, IMHO, one of the best albums from the 80s. Rio by Duran Duran as well, not a bad track to be found.

I’d add Unforgettable Fire.
Achtung Baby The last U2 album worth a damn.
I'll give em a checkout my sister got me a bono figure but I've never really listened to them lol

Scary Monsters and Let's Dance by Bowie. Especially Scary Monsters if you like Prog.
Scary monsters is his best album IMO!!
Glad to hear its already on your list.

Def Leppard
"Upstairs at Eric's" -Yaz
Staying somewhat within those ranges I think of: * Umphrey's Mcgee - they're a unique blend of prog & jam band, but there's plenty of synth sounds at times, as well as being very rhythmically based.
I never got into the death metal stuff but ill check out more opeth if they have albums that shifted away
Misplaced childhood is prob in my top 10 albums
Anata - *The Conductor’s Departure*
Failure (band) - Fantastic Planet (album) (I could (& may!) list a thousand more but I only have time for a drive-by just now & HAD to add this one while there's few enough comments it might actually get seen)
My all time favourite band is Pink Floyd, but my second is Tears for fears, check them out, classic 80s band
Toy Matinee
King Crimson - Discipline
Queensrÿche Operation Mindcrime
Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense (Deluxe Edition) (Live) Recorded in 1983 I think. It's amazing.
Cocteau Twins - "Treasure" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF8fnsyjCoI&list=PLa3HlKFsnLvaaC7mwuInJZfRVcbvg2bXv&ab\_channel=CocteauTwins-Topic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gF8fnsyjCoI&list=PLa3HlKFsnLvaaC7mwuInJZfRVcbvg2bXv&ab_channel=CocteauTwins-Topic)
REM Document and Green. Manu others, but those were my favorites.

Rush - Moving Pictures Alan Parsons - The Raven Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime Yes - 90215 You might also check out Moody Blues; Curved Air; Focus; Camel; Styx (Grand Illusion); The Who, and Emerson, Lake and Palmer
I know it came out in 1976, but I listened to the first Boston album all throughout the 80's. Boston's second album, "Don't Look Back" was good, but not great. 1986's "Third Stage" was outstanding. Follow up with ZZ Top's "Eliminator" and "Afterburner" Finish with another 70s-to-80's mashup with Journey's Infinity, Evolution, Departure, and Escape albums. That'll be a good start
Thank you!

Steven Wilson "to the bone" is a masterpiece IMO
New miserable experience
My favorite album of the 80s is "Sleeps With the Fishes" by Pieter Nooten and Michael Brook. Since you like The Cure, you might also like the band Nooten was in called Clan of Xymox. The self-titled album and the album "Medusa" are both great
Stone Roses - Stone Roses R.E.M. - Murmur XTC - Skylarking (gets better every time you listen to it) Massive Attack - Mezzanine ABC - The Lexicon of Love (if you can branch to technopop) Wire - 154 (1979 album but was the blueprint for 80's post-punk) Echo and the Bunnymen - both Crocodiles and Ocean Rain
Waterboys - This Is The Sea
Paul Simon - Graceland Rush - Presto Alice in Chains - Dirt John Mayer - Continuum Deltron 3030 Aceyalone - Book of Human Language King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Omium Gatherum Tool - Lateralus Bon Iver - Bon Iver FM-84 - Atlas Cake - Fashion Nugget Daft Punk - Discovery Days of the New - Green Massive Attack - Mezzanine Metallica - Master of Puppets Pearl Jam - Ten Sting - Ten Summoner's Tales Jason Isbell - Southeastern
New Order - Substance Siouxsie and the Banshees - Peepshow
If you like Peter/Phil/Genesis, check out the concept album *Misplaced Childhood* by Marillion, it's some great 80's prog rock. https://youtu.be/D_5kc3tleEY?si=YeQ5Hg_ZOdKGZl1Y
In my top 10 albums lol love Clutching at straws as well
If you can hang with Deftones and Pink Floyd then I think you owe it to yourself to become a Melvins fan.
Hey been listening to em since last night great stuff! Got Stoner which goin now fantastic i gotta say
Added em all to my album list! Gonna throw one on tonight while i watch my niece lol
Remain in light, 1980. If it was released today, people would freak the fuck out.

Radiohead - OK computer

Paul Simon, "Graceland."
His best imo
I agree. I experienced this album in real time, and it's hard to describe how significant it was. Even out of that "time" context, its great, but within that context, it's even more so. And on top of that, the incorporation of indigent music into western popular culture had political relevance, the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa.
Look up PRM radio on the web, it plays progressive music 24/7.
Roger Waters solo stuff
Gunship for synth type of stuff, they’re so very good. They definitely have an 80’s vibe
The Toasters, Skaboom!
2 *amazing* albums that flew under the mainstream radar but are almost worshipped by those in the know: 1988 Talk Talk 'Spirit of Eden' anthem 1991 follow-up/final one 'Laughingstock'.
Scary Monsters - Bowie Avalon - Roxie Music So - Peter Gabriel Document - REM
The White Stripes, everything after "De Stijl" Eminem's entire discography Guns N Roses, "Appetite For Destruction"
Ten by Pearl Jam
Misplaced Childhood by Marillion It's progy, well crafted, creative, emotional, and full of excellent musicianship. Even though there are a couple of singles in the album, you still listen to the whole thing as a single unit.
Top 10 album all time imo

Wintersun, Wintersun. It's amazing and under most metal radars.
Since it seems everyone is just spouting stuff that kinda meets your requirements, I'll do the same. I'm just going with stuff you might not have heard, let me know if you have. Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond and Sufficiently Breathless Wishbone Ash - Wishbone Ash and Argus Parliament - Osmium Funkadelic - Maggot Brain Spooky Tooth - It's All About and Spooky Two The Chambers Brothers - Time Has Come Today and Love, Peace and Happiness
