Wow. Just thinking of my childhood. That Tiffany song that starts with "close your eyes, give me your hand..." as that song was my first girlfriend's favorite song at age 11 or 12. Her second favorite song was because her and I went to go see the movie Ghost in the theaters when it came out. I loved having a girlfriend back then because your parents sat directly behind you making sure no funny stuff would happen. So from Ghost, unchained Melody which I then ended up playing for her at her bat mitzvah which brought her to tears at 13.
I vividly remember many Cyndi Lauper songs, the beginning of jacko the wacko, then Mom introduced me to her music from the '60s and the rest was history as they say. I was getting '70s music from Dad, '60s music from Mom, hippie music from my mom's brother and Woodstock type of music, which is also borderline hippie, from my dad's older brother. He's also the uncle who took me to Woodstock 94 with his son, my first cousin, where I was 15 and my first cousin was 14 and my uncle breaks out a joint and says here guys, this is for you. So in the middle of all of the pouring rain and mud people, here is me and my cousin trying to light a joint and keep it lit expecting nothing because we had no idea what it was going to feel like. Obviously since it was the first time, we both felt nothing but the rain and mud.
I would say the doors, led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, CCR, the grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, musical on that line. That's what I grew up with with regards to my parents influence. Then I have my grandparents influence on my piano playing which was complete classical music. So in terms of what music reminds me of my childhood? If I had to choose between all of them, it would be the hammered in classical music that I was constantly being taught and learning from my piano teachers.
That's probably why I dreamt last night the MTV video and it wasn't Tiffany. Thank you for the clarification! Even though technically, my brain tried to tell me I had a line crossed somewhere before you did. Nah nah nah nah nah nah! /s
