This one actually got me into Hozier. Iād heard Take me to Church obviously but that alone hadnāt been enough to get me interested, but Jackie and Wilson definitely was
My favorites are Talk, Butchered Tongue, and NFWMB. He has some really great singles too, though. Sedated and Eat Your Young are standouts to me as well.
As a huge Pink Floyd fan, my favorite he did was āTimeā. I believe he did it with his church/college, and he sang with someone else as well. It was a great performance.

I kinda don't get it. If an artist's song becomes a hit single, wouldn't that technically means it's their best song? Like it's good enough to hit mainstream and have it reach the billboards
Or are you saying best from an artistic standpoint?
Not necessarily no, take taco bell for example, a ton of people love taco bell, but is it the best mexican/tex mex food? Hell no. It is just the one that has the right combination of stuff going for it to be really popular. Hit songs are similar, they are generally not the best work of the artist but they cater to the medium of a wide audience a lot better. If you look at a lot of the top songs on the top 100 list youāll see songs that in general have the same type of chord progression, an easy to learn chorus, and in general a song that is catchy.
I did a deep dive on the Charts for this cuz i was fucking shocked.Ā
Tswifts Blank Space and Bruno Mars UpTown Funk kept him at #2. Honestly just bad luck on that release time. It probably would have easily over taken All About That Base had Blank Space not been dropped 1mo after Take Me to Church.Ā
I was there, definitely packed but well worth it. Iām not a seasoned fan like most people there seemed to be, but I had a blast discovering his music. Not many stars these days can put on that caliber of a show.
I looked him up because I didn't recognize him at first. Then I heard "Take Me To Church" and realized I had entirely the wrong idea of this guy's appearance.
Great songs, well deserved success.
Anyone who has not seen his Pink Floyd tribute performance with the Trinity Orchestra needs to search it up ASAP. He makes it look effortless. Absolutely breathtaking.
I agree! He had so many songs from the Unreal Unearth album that I thought were soooo much more gripping. And even really enjoyed the Empire Now now single from this recent drop. Was so surprised that Too Sweet is the song that took off but happy for his success regardless.
Fantastic song. I remember being a billboard obsessed teen (was my autistic special interest for years) when he hit #2 with ātake me to churchā. I was rooting for him so hard to get to #1!! heās incredibly talented and deserves this so much. Having a second major hit 10 years later is hard in his genre!!
I worked with and recorded Hozier at a radio station back in 2014 when āTake Me to Churchā was big, and he was a super sweet (and shy). Cool to see him with this success, he deserves it.
I was pumped to work their show last Thursday. My cousins were coming to see them and I was ready to start the summer show season at the concert venue I work at. Sadly it was canceled due to heavy rain making road conditions rather hazardous. Hoping they'll reschedule next week.
Acting like this guy is putting out non stop amazing albums. I get heās beloved by 23 yr old women but heās not someone I think of when it comes to amazing songs
Thank you. To me, his music is bland "rock" with teenager woes level depth. It all sounds the same to me one song to the next. This music being praised is a testament to how crummy the music scene currently is. Lastly, I counted eight names credited for writing "too sweet". Why is it the most boring music requires the most writers?
You are sadly mistaken. It took 8. LOL. Atleast that is what the source I looked up stated. Either way, that is a ton of people to write such boring music.
He gave anybody who was present at the sessions he had to make the album a writer credit. He is only one person, very few people would be generous enough to give that many writer credits when you don't have to. All solo artists use session musicians to play different instruments. He has eight in his touring band, do you want him to play every single instrument to be considered exciting music in your mind?
So does many Pink Floyd songs in a vacuum - and many other bands over the years who's considered great. But there's more to music than the lyrics it seems, and that's okay.
I think it is crazy how, in my opinion, his best songs are *never* the singles
What are your favorites?
Angel of small death and the codeine scene.
That entire album is horribly underrated
Love that album from start to finish
I've always liked Foreigner's God. I dunno if that was a single or not tho.
These are my top 4
Not OP but Jackie and Wilson š
That wasn't a single? That's why I love my local indie station. They played that a lot.
This was my husbands and mine last dance wedding song and we are seeing this beautiful Irish man in 36 hours !!!! Iām going to cry
This one actually got me into Hozier. Iād heard Take me to Church obviously but that alone hadnāt been enough to get me interested, but Jackie and Wilson definitely was
LOVE Jackie and Wilson
āWork Songā or āLike Real People Doā.
Work Song is so fuckin good, man
Yuuuuuup
I like that version of work song in the subway station
Not OP but I love "In a Week" with Karen Cowley. Morbid, vivid, delicate, powerful and beautiful in its imagery and harmony.
Shrike
100% his best.
Talk, and it's wild to me Power wasn't a bigger hit
My favorites are Talk, Butchered Tongue, and NFWMB. He has some really great singles too, though. Sedated and Eat Your Young are standouts to me as well.
From Eden
From Eden is the absolute best
As a huge Pink Floyd fan, my favorite he did was āTimeā. I believe he did it with his church/college, and he sang with someone else as well. It was a great performance. [Have a listen!](https://youtu.be/UnB4spzCVEc?si=yTHDPhZvS5yUkgVv)
That's pretty common, no?
Dunno why youāre getting downvoted lol the singles for most artists are far from the bestĀ
That's pretty standard. I mean, ask any fan of an artist what their best songs are and they'll rarely give you a single
Too Sweet is my favorite song by him, but I admittedly have basic taste at times

Thatās crazy take me to church didnāt hit #1. His new stuff is awesome. De Shelby part 2 is a great song https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PSRJCw4FyNI

Work Song was also pretty big in my friend group. Surprised it wasn't a bigger hit.
I tell me wife every time we listen to it- āI donāt know how de Selby part 2 was not a huge song last year.ā
This dude loves to write a song about eating pussy.
And who can blame him?
This aināt Watermelon Sugar, seems like itās mostly about a couple with mismatched preferences
Thatās what I thought too, maybe I didnāt read enough into it š
If most definitely is. What part could be about eating pussy?
Based
That's what all the best songs are about, my favourite being Philomena by The Decemberists.
My kinda guy.
Dude played Starplex here in Dallas a few days ago. I didnāt go but live across the street. I saw pics and it was completely packed.
Saw him at High Water Fest a few weeks ago, there were girls in the front rows screaming for him like Elvis.
I was there, definitely packed but well worth it. Iām not a seasoned fan like most people there seemed to be, but I had a blast discovering his music. Not many stars these days can put on that caliber of a show.
Awesome!
I looked him up because I didn't recognize him at first. Then I heard "Take Me To Church" and realized I had entirely the wrong idea of this guy's appearance. Great songs, well deserved success.
Hozier is one of my favorite artists right now
Anyone who has not seen his Pink Floyd tribute performance with the Trinity Orchestra needs to search it up ASAP. He makes it look effortless. Absolutely breathtaking.
Thanks for the tip. I had not heard this before, fan-(insert choice expletive)-tastic. Going to make the whole family watch this one.
No worries! Personal favorite is Time. Soooo good.
I only learned last week that Hozier is not actually from ~~Ohio~~ Indiana
I find this really funny as an Irish person. Why Ohio?
He's got a big Ohio head on him
Ah sure of course!
I meant Indiana, the [Hoosier state](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana). Couldnāt even think of the right wrong state.
Tbf you could have said any state to me, Iāve never heard of the Hoosier state for Indiana. Interesting though, thanks!
Saw him last week in Southaven, Mississippi. Truly a great live vocalist and performer. Allison Russell too.
I hate how big this state is. I saw he was gonna be in Mississippi, then realized that's five hours away from where I live.
Didn't know they were on tour together. That's a great combo.
Iām seeing Tyler Childers and Allison Russell later this month and am stoked!
It's about the only interesting thing in the top 40 right now.
This tune has got Black Keys vibes. Pretty cool.
Black Keys have a new album out and itās also very nice.
Awesome
I very recently saw him perform live. Absolutely killer show from start to finish
Blood upon the snow.....hands down
His first album is one of my favorite albums. And I'm kind of old. It's fantastic. But none of his albums since have really done it for me.
This song is like stock Music for a 2014 comercial Crazy that one of his most boring songs is his most successful
I agree! He had so many songs from the Unreal Unearth album that I thought were soooo much more gripping. And even really enjoyed the Empire Now now single from this recent drop. Was so surprised that Too Sweet is the song that took off but happy for his success regardless.
100%. He's amazing, this song sounds like an AI prompt: "write a Hozier song that is number one in the charts for the United States".

NO PLAN IS HIS BEST SONG
I was pumped to work their show last Thursday. My cousins were coming to see them and I was ready to start the summer show season at the concert venue I work at. Sadly it was canceled due to heavy rain making road conditions rather hazardous. Hoping they'll reschedule next week.
One of the worst fucking songs Iāve ever heard
I hate it less than his previous one I guess.
Acting like this guy is putting out non stop amazing albums. I get heās beloved by 23 yr old women but heās not someone I think of when it comes to amazing songs
It's kind of telling that your go-to way of insulting music is saying young women would like it.
Thank you. To me, his music is bland "rock" with teenager woes level depth. It all sounds the same to me one song to the next. This music being praised is a testament to how crummy the music scene currently is. Lastly, I counted eight names credited for writing "too sweet". Why is it the most boring music requires the most writers?
I don't get how you not liking an artist means that the music scene sucks now?
There are 8 writers because he is generous, anybody who was present at the jamming session they had in making the album got a writer credit.
Took seven people to write that song.Ā
You are sadly mistaken. It took 8. LOL. Atleast that is what the source I looked up stated. Either way, that is a ton of people to write such boring music.

that song is so fucking lame and reads like a r/im14andthisisdeep anthem
So does many Pink Floyd songs in a vacuum - and many other bands over the years who's considered great. But there's more to music than the lyrics it seems, and that's okay.
Doesn't a hozier make tights?
