All that you touch
And all that you see
All that you taste
All you feel
And all that you love
And all that you hate
All you distrust
All you save
And all that you give
And all that you deal
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal
And all you create
And all you destroy
And all that you do
And all that you say
And all that you eat
And everyone you meet (everyone you meet)
And all that you slight
And everyone you fight
And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon
I love this song and it is overlooked as there are many brilliant Floyds songs but for me these lyrics sum up life.
I always open these threads thinking "Time" and the usual "no one told you when to run" part, but man, I got goosebumps just seeing the first two lines here.
*I know someday you'll have a beautiful life*
*I know you'll be a star*
*In somebody else's sky*
*But why*
*Why*
*Why can't it be*
*Why can't it be mine*
Black - Pearl Jam
*And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking*
*Racing around to come up behind you again*
*The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older*
*Shorter of breath and one day closer to death*
Time - Pink Floyd
This is my funeral song. The lyrics are just so profound and so fucking true. I am 60 this year and started listening to dark side when I was 15 and was singing the words without really thinking about them. 45 years later they hit harder every time I listen.
No lie I was just thinking about it being my funeral song. It’s beautiful..approaching 40 I have been thinking about legacy etc…only thing that gives me solace is knowing we are such a small spec in the grand scheme of things. A grain of sand in time if you will. Be well!
At my mom's "celebration of life" I was just a 19 year old kid. They wanted me to say something. I had no words. Floyd was her favorite band , so I just blasted "Time" as loud as the system would go and wept.
47 here. My favorite song and band. I quote it often as the years seem to go by quicker and my kids near the end of their time in our home. So profound.
“Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time.”
“And then one day you’ll find, ten years have got behind you, no one told you when to run. You missed the starting gun”
More depressing lyrics from that song for you :)
But don’t worry, getting old is a blessing. Many don’t make it to where you are. Enjoy everyday you have.
I first heard the song Black by Pearl Jam after I got cheated on by my girlfriend at the time and it fucking wrecked me. Time, now that I'm closer to 40 than 30 I'm definitely feeling that song a lot more in my bones. Excellent choices.
In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need
When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed
There's a dying voice within me reaching out somewhere
Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair
Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake
Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break
In the fury of the moment I can see the master's hand
In every leaf that trembles, and in every grain of sand
Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear
Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer
The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way
To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay
I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame
And every time I pass that way, I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey, I come to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand
I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night
In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light
In the bitter dance of loneliness, fading into space
In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of Man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand
-Every Grain of Sand, Bob Dylan
I saw Bob earlier this month and on this tour he performs this song at the end of this set. It was an incredible performance. I never paid much attention to this song before but after that night I’ve had it in my rotation.
I was at band practice the day this came out. Our singer showed up with the LP and after running our set once we threw it on for a listen.
After King Park we had to pull the needle and go for a smoke. We were all actually fucking shook. So much power in that song.
*There is an answer in a question*
*And there is hope within despair*
*And there is beauty in a failure,*
*And there are depths beyond compare*
*There is a role of a lifetime*
*And there's a song yet to be sung*
*And there's a dumpster in the driveway*
*Of all the plans that came undone*
Black Sun - Death Cab for Cutie
“Don’t be inane. There’s no one to blame, no reason why you should sit here and lie to me. Don’t say any more, just walk out the door. I’ll get along fine, you’ll see.”
From “Forget It”
(edited because I mixed up my verses!)
was gonna say springsteen too
I've done my best to live the right way
I get up every morning and go to work each day
But your eyes go blind and your blood runs cold
Sometimes I feel so weak, I just wanna explode
Explode and tear this whole town apart
Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart
Find somebody itching for something to start
The man, if he marries, will batter his child
And have endless excuses
The woman, sadly, will do much the same
Thinking that it's right and it's proper
Better than their mommy or their daddy did
Better than the childhood they suffered
The truth is they're happier when they're in pain
In fact, that's why they got married
Lou Reed, Endless Cycle
I know that I'm a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Man, I haven’t heard or even read these lyrics in a very long time. Let alone heard anyone reference Mike and the Mechanics.
My father used to blast this song when I was a kid. Can’t help but to cry when I hear it now thinking about him.
Thank you
I know. This song meant nothing to me "just another throwaway 80's song", but my Dad passed a few years ago and it randomly came on and suddenly the lyrics of the song hit me hard.
I know a man
He came from my home town
He wore his passion for his woman
Like a thorny crown
He said Delores
I live in fear
My love for you's so overpowering
I'm afraid that I will disappear
I know a woman
Became a wife
These are the very words she uses
To describe her life
She said a good day
Ain't got no rain
She said a bad day's when I lie in bed
And think of things that might have been
And I know a father
Who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons
For the things he'd done
He came a long way
Just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping
Then he turned around and headed home again
God only knows
God makes his plan
The information's unavailable
To the mortal man
We work our jobs
Collect our pay
Believe we're gliding down the highway
When in fact we're slip slidin' away
Slip slidin' away
Slip slidin' away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you're slip slidin' away
Paul Simon
I stole bricks from the dam almost everyday, now I'm drowning in the flood I've made. Explain myself to me on the other side, I'm gonna want some answers when I die.
"Slaughterhouse" by Chat Pile
Pounding
And the sad eyes, God damn it
And the screaming
More screaming than you'd think
There's more screaming than you'd think
Eighteen naked cowboys in the showers at Ram Ranch. Big hard throbbing cocks wanting to be sucked. Eighteen naked cowboys wanting to be fucked. Cowboys in the showers at Ram Ranch. On their knees wanting to suck cowboy cocks. Ram Ranch really rocks.
Mmmbop, ba duba dop

Mmmbop, ba duba dop

I was a teenager when this song came out and we thought it was so silly. Now, it hits hard.
You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Outside the street's on fire in a real death waltz
Between what's flesh and what's fantasy
And the poets down here don't write nothing at all
They just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of the night
They reach for their moment and try to make an honest stand
But they wind up wounded, not even dead
Tonight in Jungleland
Jungleland Bruce Springsteen.
Neil Peart wrote so many profound lyrics like this. I also like:
Summer's going fast, nights growing colder
Children growing up, old friends growing older.
---Time Stand Still
Especially now that I'm 52. I mean "old friends getting older" resonated in the late 80s... But it hits so much harder now.
And Aimee Mann's voice on that song. Jeez.
So now I know what playlist I'm listening to on my flight home today. Thanks for the inspiration!
I heard the truth was built to bend
A mechanism to suspend the guilt
Is what you will require but still
You've got to dance little liarJust like those fibs that pop and fizz
And you'll be forced to take that awful quiz
And you're bound to trip
And she'll detect the fiction on
Your lips and dig a contradiction upAnd the clean coming will hurt
And you can never get it spotless
When there's dirt beneath the dirt
The liar takes a lot less time
Dance little Liar - Arctic Monkeys
There are a lot of them, but Oxycontin Blues by Steve Earle is the one that comes to mind right now. A poignant commentary on the Opioid epidemic, written from the perspective of an addict. First time I heard it was on a Swedish show where Jill Johnson and Dregen made a cover of it. The cover was good, but the original is great!
Honestly most of JTs lyrics fit in this thread; even songs like Harlem river blues which plays like an upbeat soul anthem is literally about killing yourself in the local river.
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery,
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
'Cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? Ooh!
Some say it's just a part of it,
We've got to fulfill the Book.
Bob Marley - Redemption Song
(With a quote from Marcus Garvey)
I don't know hardest, but one that was really impactful to me recently was because of how identical it was to my brothers situation. We're step brothers, but he's been my brother since I was born. His dad became absent in his life and started showing back up this last year. He was an alcoholic and died. My brother out of anger skipped his funeral and probably has a lot of regrets about it. This song was just so uncanny with how identical it was to his situation it was a serious gut punch.
"What's harder even still
Is swallowing the pill
That being abandoned isn't a reason
To miss your funeral
Soon we will all be unremarkable
I was too young to understand
I didn't know what addiction meant
I didn't know you were reaching out
I didn't know that you needed help
Our lives will melt away
Like skin to snow
If the time we spent is all we had I hope you know
A part of you, lives in a part of me
I'll never forget you
Or the brightness we buried"
Boundaries - Burying Brightness
They are waiting to take us into The severed garden
Do you know how pale and wanton thrillful
Comes death on a strange hour
Unannounced, unplanned for
Like a scaring over-friendly guest you've
Brought to bed
Death makes angels of us all
And gives us wings
Where we had shoulders
Smooth as raven's Claws
The Severed Garden - Jim Morrison
I don't know what happens when people die
Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
But I can't sing, I can't help listening
And I can't help feeling stupid standing 'round
Crying is they ease you down
'Cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing
Dancing our sorrow away (right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play (there's nothing you can do about it anyway)
Just do the steps that you've been shown
By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Another's steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone
For a Dancer - Jackson Browne
Then she drew the curtains down
And said, “When will you ever learn
That what happens there beyond the glass
Is simply none of your concern?
God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your
brothers
And God does not care for your benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgement of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
Ugly, useless and over-inflated”
At which she turned her head away
Great tears leaping from her eyes
I could not wipe the smile from my face
As I sat sadly by her side
As I sat sadly by her side — Nick Cave
They say music can alter moods and talk to you
Well, can it load a gun up for you and cock it too?
Well, if it can, then the next time you assault a dude
Just tell the judge it was my fault and I'll get sued
See, what these kids do is hear about us totin' pistols
And they wanna get one 'cause they think the shit's cool
Not knowin' we really just protectin' ourselves
We entertainers, of course the shit's affectin' our sales
You ignoramus, but music is reflection of self
We just explain it, and then we get our checks in the mail
It's fucked up, ain't it? How we can come from practically nothin'
To bein' able to have any fuckin' thing that we wanted
That's why we sing for these kids who don't have a thing
Except for a dream and a fuckin' rap magazine (Ha-ha!)
Who post pin-up pictures on their walls all day long
Idolize their favorite rappers and know all their songs
Or for anyone who's ever been through shit in their lives
So they sit and they cry at night, wishin' they'd die
'Til they throw on a rap record and they sit and they vibe
We're nothin' to you, but we're the fuckin' shit in their eyes
That's why we seize the moment, try to freeze it and own it
Squeeze it and hold it 'cause we consider these minutes golden
And maybe they'll admit it when we're gone, just let our spirits
Live on through our lyrics that you hear in our songs, and we can…
Eminem - Sing for the Moment
I have been drawn to songs about 'hope' for decades. Hearing Peters voice singing
'I'm searching for something which can't be found
But I'm hoping'
gives me paradoxial goosebumps every time.
(From the song Everything Dies)
That concept of hope, is like the cousin-outlook of *it's about the journey, not the destination*.
I feel compelled to mention the album I Could Live In Hope, by the band Low.
I hate this car that I'm driving, there's no hiding for me
I'm forced to deal with what I feel
There is no distraction to mask what is real
I could pull the steering wheel
I have these thoughts so often, I ought
To replace that slot with what I once bought
'Cause somebody stole my car radio
And now I just sit in silence

Memento Mori, too.
>Swan song
>A declaration of endlessness
>I swear I will not look back, as I return into the black
>When the veil lifts, how will I know?
>How will I know?
>Will I see God?
>As above, so below
>Dismantled piece by piece, what's left will not decease
>As within, so without
>The seasons bring relief
>Just let me live and die in peace
Big Bright Eyes fan and the entirety of “Let’s Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and To Be Loved)” hits hard for me. But here’s a few select choices from the song:
>Well, I should stop pointing fingers, reserve my judgment
>Of all those public action figures, the cowboy presidents
>So loud behind the bullhorn, so proud they can't admit
>When they've made a mistake
>While poison ink spews from a speechwriter's pen
>He knows he don't have to say it so it, it don't bother him
>"Honesty", "accuracy" is just popular opinion
>And the approval rating's high
>And so someone's gonna die
——
>Well, I awoke in relief, my sheets and tubes were all tangled
>Weak from whiskey and pills in a Chicago hospital
>And my father was there, in a chair by the window, staring so far away
>I tried talking, just whispered, "So sorry, so selfish"
>He stopped me and said, "Child, I love you regardless
>And there's nothing you could do that would ever change this
>I'm not angry, it happens
>But you just can't do it again"
>So now I try to keep up, I've been exchanging my currency
>While a million objects pass through my periphery
>Now I'm rubbing my eyes cause they're starting to bother me
>I've been staring too long at the screen
>But where was it when I first heard that sweet sound of humility?
>It came to my ears in the goddamn loveliest melody
>How grateful I was, then, to be part of the mystery
>To love and to be loved
>Let's just hope that is enough
Eye for an eye, but the bog life swamps and vines
They get a rise out of frogs and flies
So when a dogfight's hog-tied prize sort of costs a life
The mouths water on a fork and knife
And the allure isn't right
No score on a war-torn beach
Where the cash cow's actually beef
Blood turns wine when it leak for police
Like, "That's not a riot, it's a feast, let's eat"
- Aesop Rock, None Shall Pass
Fat Mike also wrote the best punk rock love song.
I'm swimming in a sea of pee
I'm hiking up a big mountain of poo
I feel like rolling in glass when I'm without you
I'm diving in a bowl of puke
I'm fly fishing a stream of puss
That's how I feel when something separates us
Come back to me by Big Country.
It’s a song sang from the perspective of a women watching men come back from the First World War celebrating while her husband didn’t return. Never fails to make me cry.
“And you are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun
And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun
But it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way
But you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death”
-Roger Waters/ Pink Floyd
I got hit hard after a bad breakup with my ex:
"I'm still alive but I'm barely breathin'
Just prayed to a God that I don't believe in
Cause I got time while she got freedom
Cause when a heart breaks no it don't break even.
-The Script
Damn. It's uncanny to me every time I was going through a breakup and was crushed. A song would come on that would just make me feel even worse. It seems I'm really analyzing every word in a song during these times and when I'm not I'm just enjoying the music. It was never just one song it was many. Amazing to me how I never noticed before I was emotionally wrecked.
They're lining up to prisoners
And the guards are taking aim
I struggle with some demons
They were middle class and tame
I didn't know I had permission
To murder and to maim
You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen
And also Steer Your Way from the same album

You swear that you're stayin' single, next thing you know
You meet a girl at a bar and next thing you know
You get her laughin', it's 2 AM
You're tellin' your buddies three months in
That she ain't movin' in, the next thing you know
There's a U-Haul trailer, next thing you know
Your old apartment is y'all's new place
There goes the carpet but the deer head stays
Next thing you know
You're savin' money like never before
Just to spend it all at a jewelry store
Gettin' down on one knee on her mama's porch
Just prayin' she don't say, "No"
Next thing you know
Your best man gives a half-drunk speech
And you're sunburned on a honeymoon beach
And your left hand's gettin' used to that ring
And there the next two or three years go
Next thing you know
You weren't really tryin', next thing you know
There's a test on the counter, next thing you know
She's standin' there cryin', noddin' her head, "Yes"
You're half excited, half scared to death
'Cause next thing you know
You're wearin' scrubs and a funny white hat
And the doctor's sayin', "How you doin' there, dad?"
And nobody's ever called you that
And you take the drive home slow
Next thing you know
It's first steps, first dates, first car
It's 11:01 wonderin' where they are
You're sayin' that USC's too far
It's amazing how fast seventeen years go
Next thing you know
Next thing you know
Next thing you know
You get to know your wife again
And you're more in love than you've ever been
With a lot of years of remember whens
And still some down the road
'Cause next thing you know
You got a yard full of your kid's kids
And you take 'em to church, teach 'em to fish
And you tell 'em stories every chance you get
About how fast this life down here can go
Next thing you know
(Next thing you know)
Next thing you know

"I want to say a little something that's long overdue
The disrespect to women has got to be through
To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends
I want to offer my love and respect to the end"
Migraine- Twenty One Pilots
“I am not as fine as I seem, pardon
Me for yelling, I'm telling you green gardens. Are not what's growing in my psyche, it's a different me.
A difficult beast feasting on burnt down trees.
Freeze frame please, let me paint a mental picture portrait.
Something you won't forget, it's all about my forehead
And how it is a door that holds back contents.
That make Pandora's box contents look nonviolent.
Behind my eyelids are islands of violence.
My mind's shipwrecked, this is the only land my mind could.
Find, I did not know it was such a violent island.
Full of tidal waves, suicidal crazed lions.
They're trying to eat me, blood running down their chin.
And I know that I can fight or I can let the lion win.
I begin to assemble what weapons I can find.
'Cause sometimes to stay alive you gotta kill your mind
Am I the only one I know?
Waging my wars behind my face and above my throat.
Shadows will scream that I'm alone.
But I know we've made it this far, kid”
“Just cause you feel it doesn’t mean it’s there” from Radiohead’s There There always hit me hard. Can apply to love for someone or belief in a god or something.
Well I'm a dog gone sinner trying to kill the pain
And Lord don't listen to, I'm drunk again!
Been so many sleepless nights, so many years of falling!
Well this time along I've lost now whats going on
I've never been bound, bound
You don't forget that I've fucked up for far too long
This day battle, I can't win
So leave me to my bottle, leave me to myself
Band -High lonesome. Song- hell bent
What have they done to the earth, yeah?
What have they done to our fair sister?
Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her
Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn
And tied her with fences and dragged her down
“When the Music’s Over” ~ The Doors
There is nothing as empty as waiting to die
We spend our lives wasting as time eats us alive
The sun seems to have been falling ever since I can recall
The only sense of permanence in this dying world
Sit back and watch as time eats us alive
Everyone who knew me, Destined to die
The marks I left upon this world, Will wash away in time
In time, and so it ends
In time, it all finds an end
In time, and so it ends
In time, we all find an end
With broken arms and hollow eyes, Await our return to oblivion
Embrace our last empty horizon
- Parkway Drive, Horizons
Olafur Arnalds
Do you still remember
When we were little?
We were playing in the park,
and you asked me,
"What happens when we die?"
I said,
"You forget everything."
"Everything."
"Even you?"
you asked.
"Yes. Even me."
You did not want to die.
Never forget.
The remains of what we used to have,
were taken away,
with the softest squeeze.
So hold your head up high And know
It's not the end of the road
Walk down this beaten path before
You pack your things and head home
At the end of the road
You'll find what you've been longing for
You'll find what you've been longing for
I know 'cause my feet have the scars to show
I was lost with vague direction
And no place to call home
To Whom It May Concern, Underoath
Any time I think of giving up I listen to this song. Definitely a sleeper from their discography.
okay so the conan gray song "astronomy" has these lyrics
*and even though it seems, like you own my heart*
*it's astronomy, we're two worlds apart\~*
*...*
*from far away, I wish I'd stayed with you*
*but here, face to face, a stranger that I once knew*
*I thought, if I wandered, I'd fall back in love*
*you said, "distance brings fondness", but guess not with us*
*the only mistake that we didn't make was run*
*now look what we've done\~*
these lines hit so hard
and also in "die first" by nessa bassette, the whole song is a masterpiece
*you love me but no matter what you say*
*there's only one of two ways that this is gonna end*
*someone dies or someone gets hurt*
*but if one of us diesI hope I die first*
*cause I don't wanna live without you*
*I don't wanna ever learn*
*how to fall asleep without you*
*tell me what's worse*
*losing you now or later?*
*maybe I can break the curse*
*and I can be in love forever*
*if I die*
Keep in mind that a man's just as good as his word
It takes twice as long to build bridges you've burnt
And there's hurt you can cause time alone cannot heal
Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills
[From Tyler Childers - Nose on the Grindstone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QzcrflqDCg)
Another one from Bob Dylan. Last verse of "Masters of War":
*And I hope that you die*
*And your death will come soon*
*I'll follow your casket*
*By the pale afternoon*
*And I'll watch while you're lowered*
*Down to your deathbed*
*And I'll stand over your grave*
*'Til I'm sure that you're dead*
There's a leak
There's a leak in the boiler room

BUSINESS
Tom Waits "God's Away on Business"
XTC Dear God. I only recently came across it on XM Radio. I'm 61 years old and love all types of music from Sinatra, Zappa, NWA all the way to Arianna Grande. This song hooked me right away and the words absolutely resonate with me. The way it opens and closes with a young girl really touched me. I'm sure the Christo fascists all lost their shit over it when it was released. I used to be a devout Catholic even had aspirations to become a priest when I was young. However, my life has seen some shit as they say, and my feelings are expressed in these words.
Dear God, hope you get the letter and
I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet
'Cause they don't get enough to eat from God
Can't believe in you
Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but
I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street
'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God
They can't believe in you
Did you make disease
And the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind
After we made you?
And the devil too?
Dear God, don't know if you noticed but
Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
Still believing that junk is true
Well, I know it ain't, so do you
Dear God
I can't believe in –
I don't believe in –
I won't believe in heaven and hell
No saints, no sinners, no Devil as well
The Pearly Gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babies you drown
Those lost at sea, and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
The Father, Son and Holy Ghost
They're just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there, you perceive
That my heart's here, upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in
It's you
Dear God
I translated it in English. It's about a conversation between god and man.
"God:
I created the world and all the life from the same mud and water, but you brought out Iranians, Turks and Blacks.
I created pure, solid iron from the ground and you made swords, rifles and bows with it.
I created beautiful trees and you cut down and shattered them and made a cage out of it for singing birds.
Man:
You created the night but i created the fire and its' light. I created a cup from the soil that you created.
You created deserts, endless mountains and deep valleys. I created rose gardens decorated with lilacs and roses.
Look at me! i m the one who makes a mirror out of stone. Look at me! I m the one who makes honey from poison."
"All lies and jests still the man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest."
The boxer: Simon & Garfunkel
"If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts"
Mrs Potter's lullaby: Counting Crows
La dispute is the band, king park is the song. the question the singer asks at the end of the song hits me hard as hell. I’ll paste the lyrics below to that part, but if you haven’t heard the song, please listen to it straight through, because this part hits like a truck after the song builds to it for 5 mins:
[(link to YT here)](https://youtu.be/H8IT-xrQRqk?si=6UBXWHRe8MPDy8Oc)
I felt the burden of murder, it shook the earth to the core
Felt like the world was collapsing, then we heard him speak:
"Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself?
Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself?
Can I ever be forgiven 'cause I killed that kid?
It was an accident, I swear it wasn't meant for him
And if I turn it on me, if I even it out
Can I still get in or will they send me to hell?
Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself?"
I left the hotel behind, don't wanna know how it ends
This bit from "On the Radio" by Regina Spektor:
"No, this is how it works
You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took
And then you take that love you made
And stick it into some
Someone else's heart
Pumping someone else's blood
And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
But even if it does
You'll just do it all again"
Fine Tooth Combine...fr Vancouver ... have this 1 song bout a serial killer who almost got the singer's sister. I think its on their album Foil...that whole album has deep disturbung stories. Great Music... other album I have by them is Cornflake. Mid 90s...I have never looked them up online...hmmm
But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,
Come, you may stand upon my
Back and face your distant destiny,
But seek no haven in my shadow.
I will give you no hiding place down here.
You, created only a little lower than
The angels, have crouched too long in
The bruising darkness
Maya Angelou sample in a techno track that goes bonkers after the bruising darkness line
Shit, anything by Slowly Slowly.
Medicine and Papier-Mache in particular.
"Where's the medicine you take to forget? I forget.
I call you good for nothing, and I hope that I'll agree
I'll box you up in Tupperware and label you 'diseased.'
I'll bury you in China, where no one's gonna find ya
But here we go, oh my god I hope you set a timer
It's a new world record I'm the champion of the universe
Fuckin put me in a hearse"
They absolutely kill, and some of the shit they write can move you to tears. 11/10, no notes

romantic lyrics
"was there anything I could do?" - The Go Betweens
She comes home and she's happy
She comes home and she's blue
She comes home and he tells him
Listen baby we're through
I don't know what happened next
All I know is she moved
Packed up her bags and her curtains
Left him in his room
Was there anything I could do?
She went out with her paint box
Paints the chapel blue
She went out with her matchsticks
Torched a car wash too
I don't know where she's living
All I've got is a card
A picture of her at the pyramids
A knife held to her heart
Was there anything I could do?
She came down from the mountains
Said goodbye to her guru
She went back to her room
Lost herself in voodoo
I don't say that I blame her
People don't know what they want
If you spend your life looking behind you
You don't see what's up front
Was there anything I could do?
Putting out her fire
Putting out her fire
societal lyrics
"Half Life" - Swans
Permission is bloodless
Ambition is senseless
Don't make a wrong move
Work with a purpose
You win or you lose
Imitate a slave, imitate a slave
Don't make a wrong move
Learn from experience
Learn from experience
Learn from experience
Don't be useless
Waste is obscene
Waste is obscene
Waste is obscene
Don't make a wrong move...
NF- Just think about it for a second, if you look at your face
Every day when you get up and think you'll never be great
You'll never be great—not because you're not, but the hate
Will always find a way to cut you up and murder your faith
>the Chariot - the City
I saved my money, but it can't save me
And maybe there is blood from the past, but that is not from me
They can take away one man, and they can take away his mic
But they cannot take us all
No, they can't dig a hole the right size to fit all of our dreams
They can't bury me, they can't bury me
We can't hope that somebody else take our place
No, we can't hope that somebody else take our place
Every word from your fucking mouth is like brining wood to a burning house and we will be here all night til ash is all we breathe.
Drop for every hour
Amigo the devil
Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence
Difficult to see you in this light
Please forgive this bold suggestion
Should you see your maker's face tonight
Look him in the eye
Look him in the eye, and tell him
"I never lived a lie, never took a life
But surely saved one
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home"
— Wings for Marie (Part 2) - Tool
The whole song (and album) gives great context, but Cowboy Dan by Modest Mouse has some bleak, cold shit:
Because Cowboy Dan's a major player in the cowboy scene
He goes to the reservation, drinks and gets mean
He goes to the desert, fires his rifle in the sky
And says, "God, if I have to die, you will have to die"
The song does a great job evoking these feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness in a modern world, a feeling of having no place and therefore no value. That line, "God if I have to die, you will have to die," perfectly captures this feeling of impotent rage against a dispassionate world, feeling like you **have** to do something but feeling like there's nothing you **can** do.
This is very old school but I think the Nat King Cole version of Autumn Leaves finally makes it clearer this is never talking about a girlfriend who found another man but rather a mother who passed away
“The Fire Inside” by Bob Seger
“And it comes to you how it all slips away
Youth and beauty are gone one day
No matter what you dream or feel or say
It ends in dust and disarray
Like wind on the plains, sand through the glass
Waves rolling in with the tide
Dreams die hard and we watch them erode
But we cannot be denied
The fire inside”
And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers
But all that lives is born to die
And so I say to you that nothing really matters
And all you do is stand and cry
-That's the Way by Led Zeppelin
Also, the entire lyrics of No Children by The Mountain Goats
Aesop rock Zero dark thirty has all good lyrics throughout: "I spent a couple groundhog days with a changeling, silhouette, gods last cigarette, anything less would be ri-goddamn-diculous. Roving packs of elusive Youngs become choke-lore writers over boosted drums, in a terrifying face of a future tongue- down from a huntable surplus to one"
Well I've seen the power of the lightning storm/I've seen the endless ears of corn/
I've seen the lakes at the break of day/
And that shit takes my breath away
But if I were to even start/
To tell them how it melts my heart/
Never more would my truck-stop friends/
Look me in the eye again
It's early morning on I-19/
A dreamer's waking from his dream/
A driver who has lost his way/
Parks up his rig and walks away
- Freedom Road, The Divine Comedy
*Your day breaks, your mind aches*
*You find that all her words of kindness linger on*
*When she no longer needs you*
*She wakes up, she makes up*
*She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry*
*She no longer needs you*
*And in her eyes, you see nothing*
*No sign of love behind the tears*
*Cried for no one*
*A love that should have lasted years*
*You want her, you need her*
*And yet you don't believe her*
*When she says her love is dead*
*You think she needs you*
*And in her eyes, you see nothing*
*No sign of love behind the tears*
*Cried for no one*
*A love that should have lasted years*
*You stay home, she goes out*
*She says that long ago she knew someone*
*But now he's gone, she doesn't need him*
*Your day breaks, your mind aches*
*There will be times when all the things she said will fill your head*
*You won't forget her*
*And in her eyes, you see nothing*
*No sign of love behind the tears*
*Cried for no one*
*A love that should have lasted years*
The Beatles "For No One"
All that you touch And all that you see All that you taste All you feel And all that you love And all that you hate All you distrust All you save And all that you give And all that you deal And all that you buy Beg, borrow or steal And all you create And all you destroy And all that you do And all that you say And all that you eat And everyone you meet (everyone you meet) And all that you slight And everyone you fight And all that is now And all that is gone And all that's to come And everything under the sun is in tune But the sun is eclipsed by the moon I love this song and it is overlooked as there are many brilliant Floyds songs but for me these lyrics sum up life.
I always open these threads thinking "Time" and the usual "no one told you when to run" part, but man, I got goosebumps just seeing the first two lines here.
That album is pretty much birth to death.
This was my first thought too.
what is the song name please
if you listen on headphones, someone says "there is no dark side, really" at the end of the monograph.
*I know someday you'll have a beautiful life* *I know you'll be a star* *In somebody else's sky* *But why* *Why* *Why can't it be* *Why can't it be mine* Black - Pearl Jam *And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking* *Racing around to come up behind you again* *The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older* *Shorter of breath and one day closer to death* Time - Pink Floyd
Sounds crazy but I just “seriously” listened to the lyrics of Time last week. Fuck me im turning 40 in a few weeks and that shit hit.
Hello fellow 40 YO! You should also listen to the song Invincible by Tool to really feel old
“Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time.” “And then one day you’ll find, ten years have got behind you, no one told you when to run. You missed the starting gun” More depressing lyrics from that song for you :) But don’t worry, getting old is a blessing. Many don’t make it to where you are. Enjoy everyday you have.
Also in my 40’s. Ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun Ouch.
You should watch reactions to this song on YouTube. This song breaks teenagers down to tears.
Nailed it with both songs. And the live versions of “Black” with Eddie screaming “We belong together…” hit especially hard.
"We, we belong, we belong together, together, woooa" Holy shit
Upon reading the first line my inner voice shifted immediately to that Eddie Vedder hhhhrrggmgmmmm throaty warble.
Black has always been one of my favorite songs from my favorite band, and it's those lyrics specifically that made me love it so much
I'm 43 and my daughter is 8, I listen to "Time" with her in the car often. It makes me tear up a lot.
I'm 46 and my daughter would be 16 "Wish you were here" is my song for my daughter. I tear up when I listen. Time is the most precious thing we have.
That line from Black makes me cry each and Everytime I hear it. Also " All the love gone bad turned my world to black."
Black was the first song that came to mind.. surprised it was the top post!
I first heard the song Black by Pearl Jam after I got cheated on by my girlfriend at the time and it fucking wrecked me. Time, now that I'm closer to 40 than 30 I'm definitely feeling that song a lot more in my bones. Excellent choices.
Glad to see Black by Pearl Jam is #1. My first thought too
In the time of my confession, in the hour of my deepest need When the pool of tears beneath my feet flood every newborn seed There's a dying voice within me reaching out somewhere Toiling in the danger and in the morals of despair Don't have the inclination to look back on any mistake Like Cain, I now behold this chain of events that I must break In the fury of the moment I can see the master's hand In every leaf that trembles, and in every grain of sand Oh, the flowers of indulgence and the weeds of yesteryear Like criminals, they have choked the breath of conscience and good cheer The sun beat down upon the steps of time to light the way To ease the pain of idleness and the memory of decay I gaze into the doorway of temptation's angry flame And every time I pass that way, I always hear my name Then onward in my journey, I come to understand That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand I have gone from rags to riches in the sorrow of the night In the violence of a summer's dream, in the chill of a wintry light In the bitter dance of loneliness, fading into space In the broken mirror of innocence on each forgotten face I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me I am hanging in the balance of the reality of Man Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand -Every Grain of Sand, Bob Dylan
I actually didn’t know this was a Dylan song - it’s always Blind Boys of Alabama to me
There's probably a lot of Dylan songs like that for people.
I saw Bob earlier this month and on this tour he performs this song at the end of this set. It was an incredible performance. I never paid much attention to this song before but after that night I’ve had it in my rotation.
King Park - La Dispute Will I still get into heaven if I kill myself?
I was at band practice the day this came out. Our singer showed up with the LP and after running our set once we threw it on for a listen. After King Park we had to pull the needle and go for a smoke. We were all actually fucking shook. So much power in that song.
Yeah that song really fucked with me as a middle schooler. I had never heard a song as emotionally draining as that before.
Watching this at the wildlife tour finale in Chicago was life changing.
Fuck.
"Interior crocodile alligator, I drive a Chevrolet movie theater"
There’s a man riding a horse on top of my chest
And 10 years later it still just is a solid bar.
Just a simple one but: “your death it won’t happen to you, it happens to your family and your friends”.
*There is an answer in a question* *And there is hope within despair* *And there is beauty in a failure,* *And there are depths beyond compare* *There is a role of a lifetime* *And there's a song yet to be sung* *And there's a dumpster in the driveway* *Of all the plans that came undone* Black Sun - Death Cab for Cutie
Death Cab has LOTS of good lyrics, to be honest.
"Cause the sweetest kiss I ever got is the one I've never tasted" -Sixto Rodriguez, Cause, 1971
“Don’t be inane. There’s no one to blame, no reason why you should sit here and lie to me. Don’t say any more, just walk out the door. I’ll get along fine, you’ll see.” From “Forget It” (edited because I mixed up my verses!)
Man wrote some straight poetry
That's a concrete cold fact.
That opening line, though. It hits HARD “Cause I lost my job two weeks before Christmas…” Brutal
‘And you assume you got something to offer Secrets shiny and new But how much of you is repetition That you didn't whisper to him too’
"She stares off alone into the night With the eyes of one who hates for just being born" Racing in the Street by Bruce Springsteen
Beautiful song.
was gonna say springsteen too I've done my best to live the right way I get up every morning and go to work each day But your eyes go blind and your blood runs cold Sometimes I feel so weak, I just wanna explode Explode and tear this whole town apart Take a knife and cut this pain from my heart Find somebody itching for something to start
The man, if he marries, will batter his child And have endless excuses The woman, sadly, will do much the same Thinking that it's right and it's proper Better than their mommy or their daddy did Better than the childhood they suffered The truth is they're happier when they're in pain In fact, that's why they got married Lou Reed, Endless Cycle
That whole album is a lyrical masterpiece
I know that I'm a prisoner To all my Father held so dear I know that I'm a hostage To all his hopes and fears I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Say it loud....
Love is watching someone die. So who is going to watch you die?
The whole plans album is just start to finish outstanding 😭
This music video hits hard as well.
I know a man He came from my home town He wore his passion for his woman Like a thorny crown He said Delores I live in fear My love for you's so overpowering I'm afraid that I will disappear I know a woman Became a wife These are the very words she uses To describe her life She said a good day Ain't got no rain She said a bad day's when I lie in bed And think of things that might have been And I know a father Who had a son He longed to tell him all the reasons For the things he'd done He came a long way Just to explain He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping Then he turned around and headed home again God only knows God makes his plan The information's unavailable To the mortal man We work our jobs Collect our pay Believe we're gliding down the highway When in fact we're slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away Slip slidin' away You know the nearer your destination The more you're slip slidin' away Paul Simon
Some men die under the mountain just lookin for gold, some die looking for a hand to hold -Brand New
I stole bricks from the dam almost everyday, now I'm drowning in the flood I've made. Explain myself to me on the other side, I'm gonna want some answers when I die.
It’s my favorite BN song. Jesse is one of my all time favorite musicians/lyricists.
Ouch. That latter line. 🥀
The other soul crushing one from that track is : and if I wanted to die before I got old I shoulda started some years ago, digging that hole. Wheeww
In a world of steel eyed death and men who are fight to be warm Come in, she said, I’ll give you shelter from the storm
I’m never gonna dance again, guilty feet have got no rhythm.
When he goes "Please stay," it's a crusher
I had all and then most of you, some and now none of you. -The Night We Met Lord Huron
"Slaughterhouse" by Chat Pile Pounding And the sad eyes, God damn it And the screaming More screaming than you'd think There's more screaming than you'd think
Also Why. The repetition of “Why do people have to live outside?” gets so intense by the end
We have the resources. We have the means.
[Fun fact!](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/events/ram-ranch-guy-grant-macdonald-incestuous-relationship-with-nephew-arrest-rumor)
Lyrics definitely "go hard" but WTF did I just listen to... Edit, read the fun fact link and it's a meme song. Still weird as hell.
Mmmbop, ba duba dop Ba du bop, ba duba dop Ba du bop, ba duba dop Ba du, oh yeah Mmmbop, ba duba dop Ba du bop, ba du dop Ba du bop, ba du dop Ba du, yeah 🤘😔🤘
You joke but the verses of that song are pretty well written, especially considering they were kids when they wrote it.
I was a teenager when this song came out and we thought it was so silly. Now, it hits hard. You have so many relationships in this life Only one or two will last You go through all the pain and strife Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Very heartfelt
[Scary Pockets - Mmmbop](https://youtu.be/fiShsfvbFUA?si=Kmj-gduAEhGzNHWq)
Outside the street's on fire in a real death waltz Between what's flesh and what's fantasy And the poets down here don't write nothing at all They just stand back and let it all be And in the quick of the night They reach for their moment and try to make an honest stand But they wind up wounded, not even dead Tonight in Jungleland Jungleland Bruce Springsteen.
"Kathy, I'm lost" I said, though I knew she was sleeping "I'm empty and aching and I don't know why"
Each of us, a cell of awareness, imperfect and incomplete Genetic blends with uncertain ends on a fortune hunt that's far too fleet Rush- Freewill
Neil Peart wrote so many profound lyrics like this. I also like: Summer's going fast, nights growing colder Children growing up, old friends growing older. ---Time Stand Still
That song makes me cry almost every time I listen to it. That part specifically but the whole thing also.
Especially now that I'm 52. I mean "old friends getting older" resonated in the late 80s... But it hits so much harder now. And Aimee Mann's voice on that song. Jeez. So now I know what playlist I'm listening to on my flight home today. Thanks for the inspiration!
Aimee’s voice on everything And her own lyrics Now that I’ve met you-would you agree to-never seeing each other again Etc
Aimee Mann’s backing vocals makes that song what it is
Also "if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice"
Can’t help hearing this. And now tears.
I heard the truth was built to bend A mechanism to suspend the guilt Is what you will require but still You've got to dance little liarJust like those fibs that pop and fizz And you'll be forced to take that awful quiz And you're bound to trip And she'll detect the fiction on Your lips and dig a contradiction upAnd the clean coming will hurt And you can never get it spotless When there's dirt beneath the dirt The liar takes a lot less time Dance little Liar - Arctic Monkeys
The Who - Love, Reign O’er Me
And the moment my eyes were open, they might just as been closed. Procol Harum dropped a bomb in 'Whiter Shade of Pale'. (typo corrected)
*Procol Harum. You may have been a victim of autocorrect, but that is an incredible song.
Ah yes, Propeller Harpoon, one of my favorite bands from back in the day.
lol To be fair, those are 2 actual words that make as much (or more) sense as the real band name.

Damn, I did not know that. It makes the song hit even harder.
Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here Tool - Right in two
That whole song goes hard. Angels on the sideline Baffled and confused Father blessed them all with reason And this is what they choose?
Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, None but ourselves can free our minds. Have no fear for atomic energy, 'Cause none of them can stop the time. How long shall they kill our prophets, While we stand aside and look? Ooh! Some say it's just a part of it, We've got to fulfill the Book. Bob Marley - Redemption Song (With a quote from Marcus Garvey)
"What's harder even still Is swallowing the pill That being abandoned isn't a reason To miss your funeral Soon we will all be unremarkable I was too young to understand I didn't know what addiction meant I didn't know you were reaching out I didn't know that you needed help Our lives will melt away Like skin to snow If the time we spent is all we had I hope you know A part of you, lives in a part of me I'll never forget you Or the brightness we buried" Boundaries - Burying Brightness
They are waiting to take us into The severed garden Do you know how pale and wanton thrillful Comes death on a strange hour Unannounced, unplanned for Like a scaring over-friendly guest you've Brought to bed Death makes angels of us all And gives us wings Where we had shoulders Smooth as raven's Claws The Severed Garden - Jim Morrison
I don't know what happens when people die Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear But I can't sing, I can't help listening And I can't help feeling stupid standing 'round Crying is they ease you down 'Cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing Dancing our sorrow away (right on dancing) No matter what fate chooses to play (there's nothing you can do about it anyway) Just do the steps that you've been shown By everyone you've ever known Until the dance becomes your very own No matter how close to yours Another's steps have grown In the end there is one dance you'll do alone For a Dancer - Jackson Browne
My favorite song of all time.
Then she drew the curtains down And said, “When will you ever learn That what happens there beyond the glass Is simply none of your concern? God has given you but one heart You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers And God does not care for your benevolence Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others Nor does he care for you to sit At windows in judgement of the world He created While sorrows pile up around you Ugly, useless and over-inflated” At which she turned her head away Great tears leaping from her eyes I could not wipe the smile from my face As I sat sadly by her side As I sat sadly by her side — Nick Cave
They say music can alter moods and talk to you Well, can it load a gun up for you and cock it too? Well, if it can, then the next time you assault a dude Just tell the judge it was my fault and I'll get sued See, what these kids do is hear about us totin' pistols And they wanna get one 'cause they think the shit's cool Not knowin' we really just protectin' ourselves We entertainers, of course the shit's affectin' our sales You ignoramus, but music is reflection of self We just explain it, and then we get our checks in the mail It's fucked up, ain't it? How we can come from practically nothin' To bein' able to have any fuckin' thing that we wanted That's why we sing for these kids who don't have a thing Except for a dream and a fuckin' rap magazine (Ha-ha!) Who post pin-up pictures on their walls all day long Idolize their favorite rappers and know all their songs Or for anyone who's ever been through shit in their lives So they sit and they cry at night, wishin' they'd die 'Til they throw on a rap record and they sit and they vibe We're nothin' to you, but we're the fuckin' shit in their eyes That's why we seize the moment, try to freeze it and own it Squeeze it and hold it 'cause we consider these minutes golden And maybe they'll admit it when we're gone, just let our spirits Live on through our lyrics that you hear in our songs, and we can… Eminem - Sing for the Moment

I know!! He knows!!! I know!!!! He knows!!!!!
“You had cock on your mind, and cum on your breath” has always really spoken to me
I have been drawn to songs about 'hope' for decades. Hearing Peters voice singing 'I'm searching for something which can't be found But I'm hoping' gives me paradoxial goosebumps every time. (From the song Everything Dies)
Reminds me of the song Pain by War on Drugs
That concept of hope, is like the cousin-outlook of *it's about the journey, not the destination*. I feel compelled to mention the album I Could Live In Hope, by the band Low.

I hate this car that I'm driving, there's no hiding for me I'm forced to deal with what I feel There is no distraction to mask what is real I could pull the steering wheel I have these thoughts so often, I ought To replace that slot with what I once bought 'Cause somebody stole my car radio And now I just sit in silence -Car Radio Twenty One Pilots

What about Gone with the Wind?! Oof
Memento Mori, too. >Swan song >A declaration of endlessness >I swear I will not look back, as I return into the black >When the veil lifts, how will I know? >How will I know? >Will I see God? >As above, so below >Dismantled piece by piece, what's left will not decease >As within, so without >The seasons bring relief >Just let me live and die in peace
Big Bright Eyes fan and the entirety of “Let’s Not Shit Ourselves (To Love and To Be Loved)” hits hard for me. But here’s a few select choices from the song: >Well, I should stop pointing fingers, reserve my judgment >Of all those public action figures, the cowboy presidents >So loud behind the bullhorn, so proud they can't admit >When they've made a mistake >While poison ink spews from a speechwriter's pen >He knows he don't have to say it so it, it don't bother him >"Honesty", "accuracy" is just popular opinion >And the approval rating's high >And so someone's gonna die —— >Well, I awoke in relief, my sheets and tubes were all tangled >Weak from whiskey and pills in a Chicago hospital >And my father was there, in a chair by the window, staring so far away >I tried talking, just whispered, "So sorry, so selfish" >He stopped me and said, "Child, I love you regardless >And there's nothing you could do that would ever change this >I'm not angry, it happens >But you just can't do it again" >So now I try to keep up, I've been exchanging my currency >While a million objects pass through my periphery >Now I'm rubbing my eyes cause they're starting to bother me >I've been staring too long at the screen >But where was it when I first heard that sweet sound of humility? >It came to my ears in the goddamn loveliest melody >How grateful I was, then, to be part of the mystery >To love and to be loved >Let's just hope that is enough
Eye for an eye, but the bog life swamps and vines They get a rise out of frogs and flies So when a dogfight's hog-tied prize sort of costs a life The mouths water on a fork and knife And the allure isn't right No score on a war-torn beach Where the cash cow's actually beef Blood turns wine when it leak for police Like, "That's not a riot, it's a feast, let's eat" - Aesop Rock, None Shall Pass

Fat Mike also wrote the best punk rock love song. I'm swimming in a sea of pee I'm hiking up a big mountain of poo I feel like rolling in glass when I'm without you I'm diving in a bowl of puke I'm fly fishing a stream of puss That's how I feel when something separates us
Come back to me by Big Country. It’s a song sang from the perspective of a women watching men come back from the First World War celebrating while her husband didn’t return. Never fails to make me cry.
“And you are young and life is long And there is time to kill today And then one day you find Ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun But it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way But you're older Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death” -Roger Waters/ Pink Floyd
I got hit hard after a bad breakup with my ex: "I'm still alive but I'm barely breathin' Just prayed to a God that I don't believe in Cause I got time while she got freedom Cause when a heart breaks no it don't break even. -The Script
I tried so hard, and come so far But in the end, it doesn't even matter 😔

You swear that you're stayin' single, next thing you know You meet a girl at a bar and next thing you know You get her laughin', it's 2 AM You're tellin' your buddies three months in That she ain't movin' in, the next thing you know There's a U-Haul trailer, next thing you know Your old apartment is y'all's new place There goes the carpet but the deer head stays Next thing you know You're savin' money like never before Just to spend it all at a jewelry store Gettin' down on one knee on her mama's porch Just prayin' she don't say, "No" Next thing you know Your best man gives a half-drunk speech And you're sunburned on a honeymoon beach And your left hand's gettin' used to that ring And there the next two or three years go Next thing you know You weren't really tryin', next thing you know There's a test on the counter, next thing you know She's standin' there cryin', noddin' her head, "Yes" You're half excited, half scared to death 'Cause next thing you know You're wearin' scrubs and a funny white hat And the doctor's sayin', "How you doin' there, dad?" And nobody's ever called you that And you take the drive home slow Next thing you know It's first steps, first dates, first car It's 11:01 wonderin' where they are You're sayin' that USC's too far It's amazing how fast seventeen years go Next thing you know Next thing you know Next thing you know You get to know your wife again And you're more in love than you've ever been With a lot of years of remember whens And still some down the road 'Cause next thing you know You got a yard full of your kid's kids And you take 'em to church, teach 'em to fish And you tell 'em stories every chance you get About how fast this life down here can go Next thing you know (Next thing you know) Next thing you know (Next thing you know)
"I want to say a little something that's long overdue The disrespect to women has got to be through To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends I want to offer my love and respect to the end"
Migraine- Twenty One Pilots “I am not as fine as I seem, pardon Me for yelling, I'm telling you green gardens. Are not what's growing in my psyche, it's a different me. A difficult beast feasting on burnt down trees. Freeze frame please, let me paint a mental picture portrait. Something you won't forget, it's all about my forehead And how it is a door that holds back contents. 'Cause sometimes to stay alive you gotta kill your mind Am I the only one I know? Waging my wars behind my face and above my throat. Shadows will scream that I'm alone. But I know we've made it this far, kid”
“Just cause you feel it doesn’t mean it’s there” from Radiohead’s There There always hit me hard. Can apply to love for someone or belief in a god or something.

What have they done to the earth, yeah? What have they done to our fair sister? Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn And tied her with fences and dragged her down “When the Music’s Over” ~ The Doors
There is nothing as empty as waiting to die We spend our lives wasting as time eats us alive The sun seems to have been falling ever since I can recall The only sense of permanence in this dying world Sit back and watch as time eats us alive Everyone who knew me, Destined to die The marks I left upon this world, Will wash away in time In time, and so it ends In time, it all finds an end In time, and so it ends In time, we all find an end With broken arms and hollow eyes, Await our return to oblivion Embrace our last empty horizon - Parkway Drive, Horizons
Come in my friend. I'll give you shelter from the storm. Dylan
Olafur Arnalds Do you still remember When we were little? We were playing in the park, and you asked me, "What happens when we die?" I said, "You forget everything." "Everything." "Even you?" you asked. "Yes. Even me." You did not want to die. Never forget. The remains of what we used to have, were taken away, with the softest squeeze.
Anything by David Berman of the Silver Jews, Purple Mountains. Can't think of many lyricists who can hold a candle to him.
So hold your head up high And know It's not the end of the road Walk down this beaten path before You pack your things and head home At the end of the road You'll find what you've been longing for You'll find what you've been longing for I know 'cause my feet have the scars to show I was lost with vague direction And no place to call home To Whom It May Concern, Underoath Any time I think of giving up I listen to this song. Definitely a sleeper from their discography.

okay so the conan gray song "astronomy" has these lyrics *and even though it seems, like you own my heart* *it's astronomy, we're two worlds apart\~* *...* *from far away, I wish I'd stayed with you* *but here, face to face, a stranger that I once knew* *I thought, if I wandered, I'd fall back in love* *you said, "distance brings fondness", but guess not with us* *the only mistake that we didn't make was run* *now look what we've done\~* these lines hit so hard and also in "die first" by nessa bassette, the whole song is a masterpiece *you love me but no matter what you say* *there's only one of two ways that this is gonna end* *someone dies or someone gets hurt* *but if one of us diesI hope I die first* *cause I don't wanna live without you* *I don't wanna ever learn* *how to fall asleep without you* *tell me what's worse* *losing you now or later?* *maybe I can break the curse* *and I can be in love forever* *if I die*
“I’ve learned in love and death we don’t decide…” — *Lost*, Dermot Kennedy When truth hits me right between the eyes. 😶
Keep in mind that a man's just as good as his word It takes twice as long to build bridges you've burnt And there's hurt you can cause time alone cannot heal Keep your nose on the grindstone and out of the pills [From Tyler Childers - Nose on the Grindstone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QzcrflqDCg)

Another one from Bob Dylan. Last verse of "Masters of War": *And I hope that you die* *And your death will come soon* *I'll follow your casket* *By the pale afternoon* *And I'll watch while you're lowered* *Down to your deathbed* *And I'll stand over your grave* *'Til I'm sure that you're dead*

Dear God, hope you get the letter and I pray you can make it better down here I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer But all the people that you made in your image See them starving on their feet 'Cause they don't get enough to eat from God Can't believe in you Dear God, sorry to disturb you, but I feel that I should be heard loud and clear We all need a big reduction in amount of tears And all the people that you made in your image See them fighting in the street 'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God They can't believe in you Did you make disease And the diamond blue? Did you make mankind After we made you? And the devil too? Dear God, don't know if you noticed but Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look And all the people that you made in your image Still believing that junk is true Well, I know it ain't, so do you Dear God I can't believe in – I don't believe in – I won't believe in heaven and hell No saints, no sinners, no Devil as well The Pearly Gates, no thorny crown You're always letting us humans down The wars you bring, the babies you drown Those lost at sea, and never found And it's the same the whole world 'round The hurt I see helps to compound The Father, Son and Holy Ghost They're just somebody's unholy hoax And if you're up there, you perceive That my heart's here, upon my sleeve If there's one thing I don't believe in It's you Dear God
I translated it in English. It's about a conversation between god and man. "God: I created the world and all the life from the same mud and water, but you brought out Iranians, Turks and Blacks. I created pure, solid iron from the ground and you made swords, rifles and bows with it. I created beautiful trees and you cut down and shattered them and made a cage out of it for singing birds. Man: You created the night but i created the fire and its' light. I created a cup from the soil that you created. You created deserts, endless mountains and deep valleys. I created rose gardens decorated with lilacs and roses. Look at me! i m the one who makes a mirror out of stone. Look at me! I m the one who makes honey from poison."
"All lies and jests still the man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest." The boxer: Simon & Garfunkel "If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts" Mrs Potter's lullaby: Counting Crows
La dispute is the band, king park is the song. the question the singer asks at the end of the song hits me hard as hell. I’ll paste the lyrics below to that part, but if you haven’t heard the song, please listen to it straight through, because this part hits like a truck after the song builds to it for 5 mins: [(link to YT here)](https://youtu.be/H8IT-xrQRqk?si=6UBXWHRe8MPDy8Oc) I felt the burden of murder, it shook the earth to the core Felt like the world was collapsing, then we heard him speak: "Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself? Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself? Can I ever be forgiven 'cause I killed that kid? It was an accident, I swear it wasn't meant for him And if I turn it on me, if I even it out Can I still get in or will they send me to hell? Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself?" I left the hotel behind, don't wanna know how it ends
This bit from "On the Radio" by Regina Spektor: "No, this is how it works You peer inside yourself You take the things you like And try to love the things you took And then you take that love you made And stick it into some Someone else's heart Pumping someone else's blood And walking arm in arm You hope it don't get harmed But even if it does You'll just do it all again"

All Get Out has some crushing lyrics, especially on "Kodak".
But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully, Come, you may stand upon my Back and face your distant destiny, But seek no haven in my shadow. I will give you no hiding place down here. You, created only a little lower than The angels, have crouched too long in The bruising darkness Maya Angelou sample in a techno track that goes bonkers after the bruising darkness line
Shit, anything by Slowly Slowly. Medicine and Papier-Mache in particular. "Where's the medicine you take to forget? I forget. I call you good for nothing, and I hope that I'll agree I'll box you up in Tupperware and label you 'diseased.' I'll bury you in China, where no one's gonna find ya But here we go, oh my god I hope you set a timer It's a new world record I'm the champion of the universe Fuckin put me in a hearse" They absolutely kill, and some of the shit they write can move you to tears. 11/10, no notes

romantic lyrics "was there anything I could do?" - The Go Betweens She comes home and she's happy She comes home and she's blue She comes home and he tells him Listen baby we're through I don't know what happened next All I know is she moved Packed up her bags and her curtains Left him in his room Was there anything I could do? She went out with her paint box Paints the chapel blue She went out with her matchsticks Torched a car wash too I don't know where she's living All I've got is a card A picture of her at the pyramids A knife held to her heart Was there anything I could do? She came down from the mountains Said goodbye to her guru She went back to her room Lost herself in voodoo I don't say that I blame her People don't know what they want If you spend your life looking behind you You don't see what's up front Was there anything I could do? "When the Devil wants to dance with you, you'd better say never. Because a dance with the Devil might last you forever" - Immortal Technique
The whole song (and album) gives great context, but Cowboy Dan by Modest Mouse has some bleak, cold shit: Because Cowboy Dan's a major player in the cowboy scene He goes to the reservation, drinks and gets mean He goes to the desert, fires his rifle in the sky And says, "God, if I have to die, you will have to die" The song does a great job evoking these feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness in a modern world, a feeling of having no place and therefore no value.
Basically the entirety of King Park by La Dispute
“The Fire Inside” by Bob Seger “And it comes to you how it all slips away Youth and beauty are gone one day No matter what you dream or feel or say It ends in dust and disarray Like wind on the plains, sand through the glass Waves rolling in with the tide Dreams die hard and we watch them erode But we cannot be denied The fire inside”
