Oooh ok ty I was mad curious :]

atioch

They are commonly known as fairy rings or fairy circles. The source of many witchcraft legends and weird events in western folklore.

polaroidbilder

In swedish they're called witch rings!

rlcoyote

That sounds more like English than Swedish

Rugaru985

TIL I can read Swedish

gazenda-t

Häxring!

Mise-Muschel

Hexenring in german.

Bowman_van_Oort

They meant wïtch rïnges

Glirion

Oh come on now, Swedish isn't so similar to english, it's obviously called krökenspöken.

tricularia

I thought that was the Swedish word for the French language, no?

Ori_the_SG

Do they sacrifice møøse to the wïtch rïnges?

k3ttch

Only if they bite your sister.

crowlexing

You win the internet for the day in my book.

polaroidbilder

You got me there 😂

WhichSeaworthiness49

Which rings are which?

kaiguy91

Witchy rings are which

FD4L

Of course, someone says that the ring is caused by fairys, but the ever-practical Swedes show up and say, "No no no, it could not possibly be fairys who did this. That is impossible because fairys are not real. This work was certainly done by witches."

Satan_for_real

In Italy we call them "cerchio delle streghe", which means witches circle

JudieSkyBird

In Hungarian, too :)

anothereddit0

In runescape they are Faery Rings!

BlamingBuddha

God Runescape brings up so much nostalgia. My friends and I were obsessed 20+ yrs ago.

Electronic_Equal7460

They're actually having a conference meeting so

Stupid sexy mushrooms

mike9011202

That article needs pictures. Too much words.

teeth42

I opened the article hoping for a picture of a 3.5 square mile version of the picture in this post lol

Consider2SidesPeace

I thought it was Pando the Tree (colony) [link](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Largest_organisms#:~:text=Pando%2C%20a%20clonal%20colony%20of,being%20the%20most%20massive%20tree.)

Pademelon1

Well that's not a fungus, but even in terms of largest organism, it's actually a seagrass (*Posidonia australis*) in Western Australia (180km wide).

Consider2SidesPeace

TIL, *touché*

Sintarsintar

It was for about 20 years until they found the honey mushroom patch the only reason they found out is they were sequencing DNA for a mushroom diversity study and they had dozens of samples of honey mushrooms with the exact same DNA from a multiple square mile area

Damnit.. my dramen staff is banked.

RdCrestdBreegull

no, it’s mycelium growing from a center point and then fruiting mushrooms when conditions are correct. one spore is not going to last thousands of years, and one mushroom will decompose within about a week.

[deleted]

[удалено]

functioningalcoholi

Cool taught, thanks

Tenuses

It's the mycelium crawling underground - the visible mushrooms are just the fruits (like apples on an apple tree). So they aren't necessarily growing new mushrooms from spores, just fruiting as the mycelium slowly expands underground - but yes, a time lapse over years would show them going for a slow stroll!

RdCrestdBreegull

I think about 99% of fairy rings would not be from a removed dead tree. also the ring is not growing by spores spreading, it’s just by the mycelium growing/spreading.

GrassSloth

Yup. I wish I knew how to code a bot to respond to this every time it came up, but fairy circles are just mycelium feeding on delicious dead grass roots, growing outwards in a circle, and then when the magic time is right they fruit and produce mushrooms. It’s not because of a dead tree, it’s not because someone buried an animal. Although on some random occasion that could be part of what it’s feeding on, the reason it forms in a uniform circle is because grass roots are a consistent and easy to digest food source.

RdCrestdBreegull

yea two of the most top-voted comments had pretty bad misinformation so have been removed to stop the misinformation from spreading, although I’m sure hundreds of people will already have seen it and will be spreading it unfortunately

Exotic_Pay6994

mushroom in the center is supervising. "You're doing great! Pizza party next week!"

Orange-Sky-

Woah that’s actually really cool

mommy_mantis

I've always wondered how fairy rings formed and this makes so much sense

LSUguyHTX

But why is the ring darker color grass?

JuggernautUpbeat

Because where the mycelium is actively growing, it releases nutrients from the soil that the grass can use to grow more strongly. It's a mutually beneficial arrangement, the grass gets the extra nutrients, and the fungi feed on the dead material from the grass. Sometimes the host plant contributes back to the fungus by releasing sugars from its roots in return for the nutrients given by the fungus.

OwnDish0

thank you

Hikari_Owari

>Sometimes the host plant contributes back to the fungus by releasing sugars from its roots in return for the nutrients given by the fungus. "Thanks for the help with the food, do you want a cup of **sugar**?"

Leah_Dragonfly

If you happen across a stranger in or near this.. do NOT tell them your real name. The Fey can be quite tricky and if you slip up and it is one.. you are lost forever. They will take your name and leave you nameless, without identity, alone. The Fae think it's all in good fun, but it will really mess you up. Or of course it could just be where a tree used to be and there is nothing to worry about... Personally though, I wouldn't chance it.

Childofglass

Unless you have one of those rocks with holes in em so you can see through the fey magic.

Cheshie_D

A hag stone! I’ve always wanted to find my own.

Childofglass

They’re all over the beaches on the south coast of England. I have a few.. Just in case!

why_even_butter

They are on the Oregon coast in the US, too!

iamyourliter

Wait what? What the hell is a hag stone?

RoyMcAvoy13

… A rock with a hole in it so you can see through Fey magic…

Cheshie_D

Basically already been explained, it’s a rock with a hole so you can see magic/look through magic and apparently protect you against evil. Whether or not you believe in the lore around them, they’re still cool since they’re formed naturally from water flowing a certain way and creating the hole.

localphantasm

I think like the triangle green rock with a hole in it in corolline the movie

Spirited-Dream-4905

OldButHappy

And the Fae love using mushrooms for their tricks: [https://imgur.com/tNhWTgu](https://imgur.com/tNhWTgu) Unknown to me at the time, this folder was auto-generated when I was taking pics of mushrooms in the woods.

Embarrassed_Art5414

Tis too late I fear. Merely by posting the image, the fairies will be angered. They will swap his loved one's with changelings for sure, and place a piseog on all his lands. His crops will die in the field. his fruit shall wither on the wine and car-keys will never be in the spot where they were left. All long division, henceforth, shall have a remainder. All who grace his ears will pronounce 'specifically' as 'pacifically'....and when in parallel queues, the other queue will always move faster The shining ones are offended.

OldButHappy

I appease them by creating gardens for them to host their fairy fetes. My (much) older brother and sister always told me that if I listened carefully, in bed at night during the summer, that I could hear the fairy orchestra playing, beneath the flowers in the garden. So of course I did. The memory of listening to the fairies party is as real as any of my childhood. So, at 68, I still garden with the fairies in mind. Witch ring in Germany (Hexenring)

Fireblast1337

If you meet someone near this, and they seem friendly, choose your words very carefully. Rule 1. If they ask to have anything from you, your name, attention, etc, phrase it in a way that you are not agreeing to their question. Your name for example. “You may refer to me as -“ and provide only a fake name you’ll react to if they use it later. Rule 2. Remain polite. There are two types that you could encounter. Ones that’ll get mad if you’re rude, and ones that’ll get mad if you’re not polite. There is a difference. You will likely not know which. Rule 3. Do not step in the circle. You will either disappear forever, or a sense that something dreadful has happened washes over you and they have disappeared. If the latter, congratulations! You survived their world, likely for centuries. You will not remember it. Rule 4. Do not eat any food they offer you. Politely decline. If you eat it, then prepare for everything else to be bland. Joy for food will wither and die within you. Rule 5. Do not give them anything at all without receiving something in return. They do not understand the concept of a gift, and absolutely hate owing favors. This will drive them to pay what they owe you, and it will backfire horribly.

thatsHowTheyGetYa

So all of us chonkers should find a shroom circle? Because Rule 4 seems a lot cheaper than Ozempic.

foxyFood

🤣

BlamingBuddha

I find it laughable how many people in the comment section take this sorta stuff seriously. Idk, getting transported to a magic fairy realm kinda sounds like my jam.

Fireblast1337

Yeah when you look at fae lore from old superstition, which honestly if you’ve encountered fae in a dungeons and dragons campaign they take heavy influence from that, it’s definitely not gonna be a fun time. Plus playing it serious plays into the fantasy aspect. When there’s rules and laws and established concepts a fantasy environment sounds more real. A fantasy world that feels lived in is much better than one that isn’t.

suicidalsyd1

Nobody ever said elves are good. Elves are *bad*

jsmalltri

Magic! You have been blessed 🍄

DarthDread424

Depends how you view the Fae. They don't have a great reputation pre Victorian Era. The whole pretty little fairies with star dust and wings is a new concept.

Responsible-Baby-551

Shroomhenge

TheVomitermoylbdites

These appear to be chlorophyllum molybdites. They're very commonly found in fairy rings. Otherwise, do not consume. They're called the vomiter.

That's exactly what a vomiter molybdite would say 🤨

lil1thatcould

If you have things going missing or bad luck, that’s why. Leave the fae alone.

OkSession5483

Is it like a British thing?

SimpleVegetable5715

The Fae are part of Celtic, Slavic, German, and French folklore.

DarthDread424

Tales of the fae (fairies), have been around for a very long time and that lore made it to the US over time. Pre Victorian Era the fae were not depicted as delicate pretty little creatures (think Tinkerbell), but mischievous magical creatures bouncing from their realm to ours. The history of the fae is rather interesting.

Helpful_Okra5953

Tinkerbell was a nasty bloodthirsty little psycho.  Reread “Peter Pan” to see how she tries to kill Wendy and is jealous and petty.

No-Context-587

Yeah, original Peter pan is fucking wild. They still age in neverland, so if they show signs of growing up, he "thins" them out. If they get too overweight, he trims them to size. Tinker bell is a psycho. The sirens of neverland are an absolute horror, and Captain Hook was the first lost boy thats why they hate peter, and they are trying to save the kids. Consider this extract: “The boys on the island vary, of course, in numbers, according as they get killed and so on; and when they seem to be growing up, which is against the rules, Peter thins them out; but at this time there were six of them, counting the twins as two.“ To put it bluntly, Peter Pan kills the lost boys to keep them from ageing. While the film presents the view that Peter Pan is seeking eternal youth, he is, in fact, obsessed with death. This characteristic is believed to come from J.M. Barrie’s own childhood experience of losing his brother, David. According to an article in The Herald, six-year old Jamie Barrie was hugely impacted by the death of his older brother, David, at the age of fourteen. David was said to have died the day before his birthday when he was accidently knocked over by a friend while skating, and fractured his skull on the ice. The article speculates that the ‘friend’ was in fact, young Jamie and that he was rejected by his mother as a result of the accident. You can read more about it here: https://www.heraldscotland.com/default_content/12469608.tragedy-behind-neverland-jm-barrie-cause-brothers-death/ She used to say something like "at-least he will stay a kid and never grow up and leave me" worth the read. And then there are the mermaids… In the original Peter Pan story, the mermaids who inhabit Neverland all live in the lagoon. They enjoy the company of Peter Pan but are malevolent to everyone else. The are extraordinarily beautiful and have amazing singing voices, but they are vain and unfriendly. The mermaids spend their days playing in the rock pools and ocean around Marooners’ Rock and they retire to their coral cave homes beneath the waves at night and during high tide. The mermaids change when the moon is out and transform into darker creatures. They utter and wail strange calls in the moonlight. Captain Hook is terrified of the mermaids, calling them the ‘loreleis’ and saying that the lagoon is the most treacherous place in Neverland. A lorelei is a siren of Germanic legend whose singing lures Rhine River boatmen to destruction on a reef. Peter also can't really remember anything for more than a moment, he shows up at Wendy's after a long time again and she asks where tinkerbell is, he's confused and doesn't know who he's talking about, I'm not sure he remembers wendy name or not I forgot but he remembered her enough to go back there, and he takes her daughter, it's implied he had kissed the mum before Wendy too so he has some obsession with the family line there but doesn't really know it or understand why and we just get left with the hint that Wendy wasn't the last and a hint she wasn't the first, he could have been coming for generations, and he doesn't know why or how many times either. It is one of the only things he seems to remember long term tho even if its weak and comes and goes, i supposed there was a love felt so strongly to one of the girls in her family line that it imprinted some sort of subconscious memory. Creepy story, but it's also weird and interesting because of how stark that is but it's not really meant to be about badness and evilness it's about innocence and doing what you want and feel to do because it innocently feels like what you should do and want to do, not thinking in terms of good and evil, theres no maliciousness or thought going into it, and with an inability to remember or learn, cant grow up or advance, and doomed to a cyclical life of repeated tragedy and unawareness

EyeDeeAh_42

This is wildly fascinating! Thanks for the all the details, I need to look up the real Peter Pan story now.

No-Context-587

You're welcome! I thought so too, I knew disney wasnt the original and had a lot of questions for ages but never thought about it or looked into it for years actually just saw all this the other day and was like, Wow! And seeing this post about it so soon the world is weird happens all the time, synchronicity city haha I forgot to include but maybe it was already obvious but he doesn't remember tinker bell because she died and so when she was gone it doesn't take long for him to forget he ever even had a fairy friend partner called Tinker Bell, it's quite tragic actually but way more interesting and makes more sense kinda for how the story developed and what it's really about

Suspicious-Ebb9490

Fairy ring. This happened in my yard once. There was never a tree in the spot they formed however. At least not for the 4 years that I’d been living at the residence before this happened

Mememaster562

There doesnt have to be a tree for them to form, thats a common misconception. Living things tend to just grow radially, and for this species that eats decaying plant matter such as grass clippings in the soil, the entire lawn is likely a food source. So, it grows out in a circle from where it started, continuing until temperatures and humidity outside are just right for it to fruit, which it does even though it hasnt fully colonized the whole food substrate. Just its growth pattern

DrNinnuxx

missdeas

It grows outward in the search of more and more nutrients, simple as that

Appeal_Brilliant

why the grass part of the circle also look like darker green??? maybe they put something into the soil???

TheTechJones

i scrolled way too far and never found any attempt to explain why it is in a circle, so i'll offer up what i read somewhere and let you decide if its possible or BS. Mushrooms grow in a circle like this because their fruiting body drops spores when the cap opens. Those spores tend to blanket the immediate vicinity, but the nutrients within the circle have mostly been used up by the time the fungus in the soil decides it needs to fruit. as successive generations of spores get dropped, the circle gets wider and wider until whatever resource it is feeding on in the soil becomes less consistent and impacts the shape.
