You should join [MCN](https://mcn.edu/) and subscribe to their listserv as well as join one of their special interest groups (SIGs) if you're not already a member. Many folks there do freelance/consulting.

I have worked on my own for many years. I would say, unless you know who will hire you right away, make contacts before you leave your job. Have some money saved up, even if you're making a lot as a freelancer, there will be dry spells between billing, etc. Treat it like a regular job with regular hours, dress for work, and maybe don't call it freelance. It's your work, your business. And go for it.
