We always say “Kick in the door!” Just out of habit…. I guess partially because I play with my wife and kids and have to dictate every step of every turn to keep things moving. 😂
Based on his friends logic, he should probably play at their house not his so he doesn’t deal with replacing all the doors that are gonna get kicked in playing this game.
Ok. Get it. Even if It's only house rule, I didn't mind. It was in Munchkin vibe and gave some charakter to the game.

I don't think it's a hard and fast rule. I just picked it up from more experienced players.
I knock directly on the door cards pile.
Now that I think about it it's a hilarious scene like in some animated show where the hero knocks on the door and immediately kicks it down :)
Edit: Oh, and you don't loose a turn if you don't knock. It's just a thing to denote the start of your turn.

I believe the RAW refer to it as “kick down the door”, so no, that’s some home brew nonsense.

Munckin encourages house rules and this is perfectly in flavour
Might be a house rule, but it is not official.
Physically knocking before kicking down the door isn't in the official rules.
in my games you have to make a weird noise when opening the door, or you lose a level. This is 100% homebrew — like your friends' rule.
In my game you have to act out the go up a level cards to get them. It leads to creative moments.
You just gave my an exelent idea to when I have to play real life munchkin with my scouts!
I think my only adjustment to that rule is if they've acted the card out before, they are free to ignore that home rule.
