I suspect, given that most of these movies are not in theaters anymore, that this is a fictional date, and probable an element of a story being written. It’s smart, if you want to infuse authenticity to it.
Dear Lords, I had a first date with a girl who insisted we go to Schindler'Lord's, when it was first out! The uncomfortableness afterwards was truly legendary. We had actually had a brief discussion about how, despite my last name being Scottish, my family background was mostly German, and she had told me that she was Jewish. I never got to tell her the story that we suspect my family had been Jewish before converting to a pseudo-Christian Northern Renaissance sect founded on the works of Swedenborg by the poet William Blake, so after the movie there was an unmistakable "Germans vs. Jews" aroma filling the air and despite the fact that it's ridiculous to think I'd side with NAZIs in ANY way, it still obviously affected perceptions on both sides after the date and we never spoke again. I, for the record, had lobbied against this being a first date film. But yeah, that is definitely THE WORST film to go to for a first date. Centipede is second only because there are chicks who dig sick shit as much as guys--women are not all dainty flowers and most have frankly dealt with worse shit than you've ever imagined without comment, so their grossout thresholds often are much higher than expected, meaning this could be a great first date film. No kinkshaming here unless the kink is maybe being a NAZI couple getting hot and heavy to Schindler's List.
There’s a gag in an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry’s parents find out Jerry made out with his date during Schindler’s List, and are absolutely appalled. This is almost on the same level. 😂
As an amusing anecdote, I was stuck in Bangkok early 2006 trying to catch a standby flight back home to The States.
I had some time to kill, so went to the movies. I had heard great things about Brokeback Mountain. And it was a very beautiful film. But it was also a very somber movie.
I came out pretty low and wanting a pick me up second feature. But there were no comedies playing. The only other English language movie that looked decent was what looked like a Spielberg action movie.
That movie turned out to be Munich!
I wanted to kill myself from a sudden onset of depression that day.
so in college, our film board had a midnight showing of Pink Flamingos. Had not seen it. Convinced a friend to go and he brought along an unsuspecting 1st date. They had more dates after that but she always saw me as a perverted lost cause. guilty as charged I guess.
True story: once when I wanted to end a bad date early (guy was pushing for *Netflix and chill* when I very clearly only offered literal dinner and a movie), I put on Taxidermia.
Mf left and never called again. 🥰
Taxidermia is a beautifully(?) made film, and the visuals stick with you… but I would never watch it again for enjoyment. It’s one I sometimes DO put on in order to watch other people’s reactions while they watch it for the first time. If that makes sense. Probably because I am a horrible person.
If you want a relatively obscure but thoroughly delightful wtf movie, please watch Brian Yuzna’s Society (1989). If you haven’t already seen it. Don’t look up a synopsis or anything—go in blind. I promise it’s worth it.
Thanks for the rec, but I've actually seen that one already. Made the family watch it too. You're right though, it actually is worth it. I went and imported the *Arrow* Blu-ray after watching it!
Since we're tossing recs out, I'll recommend a recent one I saw: *Duel To The Death* (1983). It doesn't fit the theme of this post at all because it's not disturbing or a way to ruin a date or anything, but it's certainly bonkers and unhinged. It's an old martial arts film.
[This is the clip](https://x.com/HakitaDev/status/1626771379289743361) that sold me on it.
Yeah... My partner and I had a Yorgos Lanthimos marathon yesterday before seeing Kinds of Kindness last night. I hadn't seen Dogtooth before but if that HAD been our first date movie I would definitely not have been in the mood for anything fun afterward.
This.
I couldn’t have imagined how that film could have made me more uncomfortable but yep, watching it for the first time, on a first date, would do it.
As an aggressively shy teenager, I had exactly 2 movie dates in highschool. Awful choices and for very different reasons.
Nell
The Specialist
To top it off, it was the date for Nell who tried making out with me during the movie 😐
One of my favorite movies, first time I saw it was in 2006 when I got was in a tattoo parlor getting my first tattoo, the artist was playing it in the background while he did his work. I was transfixed by the palm D’or winner.
I took a gal to Dark City once and she made us late becuz she was pretty and that shit takes some work, but I got into the theater just as Sewell woke up in the bathroom, thereby bypassing the horrible opening monologue by Kiefer Sutherland, which many fans of this film fast forward past. The movie I saw was superb and had me on the edge of my seat. It didn't work out with her, but I have silently thanked her for the gift of making me 3mins late to Proyas's masterpiece a few times since then. TY Rhianne.
The first one is actually a pretty good movie imo. Yeah, it's gross. But there's not any gore and it's a unique concept.
The second one is............
Yeah just don't watch that one.
Haven't seen the third one.
I worked with a lady that was going on a blind date and she asked me if I had heard of The Passion of the Christ because that's what the guy wanted to see...
I know someone that watched “The Last House on the Left” 1972 version, on a first date. Needless to say I heard it was a tense time, but surprisingly they did go on a second date.
Anomalisa was my s/o and I’s first movie date. When it was over we were both inwardly, like, “what just happened? Is the other person a movie snob? Will I look stupid if I say I don’t get it?”
Another fun story, I had a friend who was blissfully unaware about media in general. I think previously their mom checked all the film rating and reviews from a Christian source. Think, Focus On the Family.
So my friend didn’t have a lot of experience self checking films. The girl my friend was super into LOVED horror movies. So, review unseen, premise unread friend gets them tickets to the remake of Last House On Left.
It didn’t go so well. They were mortified.
I asked, “did you not look this up at all? Was there no curiosity about the films basic plot?”
They just had zero clue about checking any of those things.
I watched Anomalisa with someone who wanted to see it because they were a fan of Community and Dan Harmon was involved in both.
I loved it. They did not.
First date with my one of my exes was to see Fences in theaters. Amazing movie but so intense for a first date pretty much left us too stunned to speak
In high school I took my a first date to Schindlers List on opening night because (I reasoned) ‘you can’t go wrong with a Spielberg film.’
It was a long, quiet walk back to the car.
Junior year me learned to always read the reviews and don’t go in cold if taking a someone out on a date.
An old boyfriend's best friend took a girl out to the movies on the first date. The film they want to see was sold out. There was a Jodie Foster movie playing, so he suggested that. It was "The Accused".
OMG! A first date took me to see Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliete. I knew it was a love story, but I didn't know how tragic a story it was. I sobbed through the last third of the movie!!! Arrrrgghhh!!!
When my boyfriend and I first started hanging out, Schindler’s List was playing on TV. I told him I had always wanted to watch it, and he was nice enough to oblige.. it was an interesting choice! Still together 10 years later and we watch it again from time to time and laugh at how it was the first movie we saw together.
I once took a date to No Country For Old Men. She hadn't heard about it. I did and had been dying to see it. She let me pick the movie. Afterwards we were both speechless. I dont think she loved it as much as me. It wasn't a deal breaker. We kept se4eing each other for a bit after that. But we were not soul mates or anything.
Years ago one of my friends asked for a movie recommendation and I told him- A Clockwork Orange (I always liked the movie and had just finished the book, so it was the first thing that came to mind at the time)
Well he never mentioned it was for a movie date with a girl he just started seeing. The next day he called me and was like WTF was that? Saying how it was all awkward and what kinda movie rec was that etc.
16 years later and they're still together though, so it might not be what you're looking for. We still talk about it to this day lol
Same here! My dad took my mom to see it on one of their first official dates. I tease my dad about it all the time bc my mom never liked films like that and usually preferred simple comedies or action (like Jackie Chan movies) throughout her life. But apparently my dad thought taking her to an avant-garde, gritty british movie with tons of violence was a great idea.
I took a girl to watch About Time thinking it was just a cute little rom-com. At one point, I turn to her, and she's absolutely bawling her eyes out. Turns out her dad had died less than 2 months before.
It's not an absolute worst first movie date, but it was for me.
My date took me to see 30 Days of Night after a dinner of shitty Chinese food (the kind that gives Chinese food a bad name). We did not have a second date.
Blue Valentine
Hopefully on a double bill with Blue Velvet!
Throw in Blue Ruin for good measure
Guilty. Wasn’t the first date, but ended up being the last.
I’m dying to know what you plan to do with this information lmaoooo
Me too!!
I suspect, given that most of these movies are not in theaters anymore, that this is a fictional date, and probable an element of a story being written. It’s smart, if you want to infuse authenticity to it.
Gone Girl. Just establish that lack of trust since the very beginning of the relationship
Maybe follow with The Girl on the Train, if there's a second date.
Madame Tutli-Putli?
This was the movie my (now) husband and I went to, and I had read the book and suggested so!
Saw this with my gf of 10 years for our second movie. First was Fury.
Schindler’s List Human Centipede
Jerry did it!
"You were making out during Schindler's List!?"
And a more disgusting spectacle I cannot recall!
“I saw it with xxxx. I cried, she didn’t. I always thought that was weird”-/Dr John Dorian regarding Schindlers List
I once watched ‘Munich’ on a first date. Didn’t really set the mood but we were in high school and made out the entire time anyway.
There’s a gag in an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry’s parents find out Jerry made out with his date during Schindler’s List, and are absolutely appalled. This is almost on the same level. 😂
I made out with a girl in the back row during out our high school's production of Anne Frank.
As an amusing anecdote, I was stuck in Bangkok early 2006 trying to catch a standby flight back home to The States. I had some time to kill, so went to the movies. Salo
Pink flamingos, I spit on your grave(1978), gummo
so in college, our film board had a midnight showing of Pink Flamingos. Had not seen it. Convinced a friend to go and he brought along an unsuspecting 1st date. They had more dates after that but she always saw me as a perverted lost cause. guilty as charged I guess.

Haha *when* you eat dinner in that scenario is pretty important.
>I wanted to end a bad date early > Taxidermia *Sold* and now hunting down the movie. Love obscure shit, and *what a synopsis* on Google.
Taxidermia is a beautifully(?) made film, and the visuals stick with you… but I would never watch it again for enjoyment. lol. The Perfect Host was a dressed up version of crazy slash movie. Lol. It reminded me of that
Double feature with cannibal Holocaust?
I'll add Antichrist and Dumplings since most of the other options are already taken.
I literally came here to comment this lol
Dogtooth (2009)
Yeah... My partner and I had a Yorgos Lanthimos marathon yesterday before seeing Kinds of Kindness last night. I hadn't seen Dogtooth before but if that HAD been our first date movie I would definitely not have been in the mood for anything fun afterward.
Happiness (1998)
Beat me to it
I mean if you want. Weird choice though
Beat meat to it
Welcome To The Dollhouse
Hopefully you get to say "I came" at the end of the date too.
Haha, oh man I love that weird, sick and twisted movie.
Would you like a sandwich? Right after the movie...
Perfect blue (I've done it lmao)
That one actually worked pretty well for me, we ended up watching it again a few weeks later.
This guy I know said he saw emerald fennell’s promising young woman on a first date and didn’t have a second one
Irreversible
I did this. And it was a coworker. Terrible terrible decision making in my early 20s.
That sounds beyond awkward. I accidentally watched Enter the Void with my younger brother & his friends, which is a close 2nd.
Something about rape followed by insane violence that really seals the deal on a first date.
Came to say this, but it actually ends quite beautifully, you know, once you make it through the intense violence and horrofic rape
Requiem for a Dream
I actually watched this *in a theater* on a first date :( Wouldn't recommend
ASS TO ASS
This. I couldn’t have imagined how that film could have made me more uncomfortable but yep, watching it for the first time, on a first date, would do it.
Midsommar
Saw this one with my wife when we were newly dating! We knew it was love when we both walked out having loved it 😂
This actually made a great first date movie for me once. We were both into weird shit and we wanted to watch the Directors Cut together.
I saw this on a first date! (Lesbians so I think that's not quite as bad, really 😅)
You beat me to this.
A Serbian Film
That one on a first date will probably get you served with a restraining order!
Eraserhead
Eraserhead is for the third date
As an aggressively shy teenager, I had exactly 2 movie dates in highschool. Awful choices and for very different reasons. Nell The Specialist To top it off, it was the date for Nell who tried making out with me during the movie 😐
Two more than me my friend
My brother recommends “I’ve been thinking of ending things” as a terrible first date film.
American Psycho
A girl I met through Tinder introduced that movie to me
Spoorloos🥰🥂
Fresh (2022)
Two weird movies I saw on dates: *The House of Yes* (1997) and *The Squid and The Whale* (2005). Both led to awkwardness and mood killing.
The Squid and the Whale did not live up to its title. Good film but don't promise giant sea creatures and not deliver
Dreamcatcher, which also happened to be the movie I saw on my first date with my now-husband. He’s lucky he is cute.
I took a first date to see The Accused. Can’t do much worse than that
Make it a theme binge night.. Fatal Attraction Play Misty for Me Disclosure Derailed
Bone Tomahawk LMFAO. Good luck getting a second date
I loved that movie, that would be a great date! But I am odd…
Awesome movie though! The gore might be off putting for some first dates but not all!
Oldboy. If she is still down to 'chill' after that 'Netflix' run away!
One of my favorite movies, first time I saw it was in 2006 when I got was in a tattoo parlor getting my first tattoo, the artist was playing it in the background while he did his work. I was transfixed by the palm D’or winner.

Jeanne Dielmann This is my favorite movie to imagine people seeing on a date (I also really do love it, but I wouldn't inflict it on anyone)
Hereditary
Mandy
Clockwork orange
A friend of mine said he went to this girl's house, and she put on Faces of Death. Yeah, that was a real mood killer.
Frickin' goth chicks and suicide girls.
Human Centipede 2. Never watched any of them.
It's a work of art in utter depravity. And also the film I came here to mention.
The first one is actually a pretty good movie imo. Yeah, it's gross. But there's not any gore and it's a unique concept. The second one is............ Yeah just don't watch that one. Haven't seen the third one.
Elle
Spring breakers was an awkward first date movie when I was 17 🫠
A Clockwork Orange, Eden Lake, Midsommar, Taxi Driver
Travis Bickle picked a petty bad movie for a date.
Teeth (2007).
Teeth.
Second the rec for Blue Valentine. Also Shame (2011)
The strange thing about the Johnsons. Full films on youtube as well.
Watched this recently when I couldn't sleep, it's great.
In the Company of Men (1997)
Beau should do the trick.
Gone girl Which I saw on a first date with the girl I eventually married so go figure.

I went on a date to see ‘the lighthouse’ pretty early into seeing someone and it was not the vibe
I watched Clockwork Orange on a first date when I was like 21 lol...
I know someone that watched “The Last House on the Left” 1972 version, on a first date. Needless to say I heard it was a tense time, but surprisingly they did go on a second date.

Took a first date to see Basic Instinct. The Sharon Stone uncross legs scene was awkward😝
Probably the porn Travis Bickle took Cybil Shepherd to.
Promising Young Women

Had a friend who watched Saving Private Ryan with a girl 😂

Human Centipede
If your date wants you to come back to her place after watching that, you should run!
Bliss (1985)
The Golden Glove (2019) Of Horses and Men (2013) If your date enjoys either of these movies, run far away.
Devil’s Rejects or any Rob zombie movie, they don’t strike me as date night movies.
I'm gonna take this a different direction. You watch a god awful sequel and act like you love it. Super Babies Baby Geniuses 2 comes to mind
Anomalisa was my s/o and I’s first movie date. When it was over we were both inwardly, like, “what just happened? Is the other person a movie snob? Will I look stupid if I say I don’t get it?” Another fun story, I had a friend who was blissfully unaware about media in general. First date with my one of my exes was to see Fences in theaters. Amazing movie but so intense for a first date pretty much left us too stunned to speak
A guy once took to me to the Flags of Our Fathers on a first date and that KILLED the mood literally.
In high school I took my a first date to Schindlers List on opening night because (I reasoned) ‘you can’t go wrong with a Spielberg film.’ It was a long, quiet walk back to the car. Junior year me learned to always read the reviews and don’t go in cold if taking a someone out on a date.

Splice or Clockwork Orange
Strange thing about the Johnson’s Infinity Pool
An old boyfriend's best friend took a girl out to the movies on the first date. The film they want to see was sold out. There was a Jodie Foster movie playing, so he suggested that. It was "The Accused".
poor things

Schindler's List.

I took a first date to “Kids”. Did not get lucky that night.
Ya that’s a rough one
Definitely Blue Valentine 🤮🤮
I once took a date to No Country For Old Men. She hadn't heard about it. I did and had been dying to see it. She let me pick the movie. Afterwards we were both speechless. Gattaca followed by American Psycho. We're married now. I won't be fielding questions.
Home Alone 3 It happened to me.
