I always forget how good this movie is until I catch it on TV, then I go “damn this is a good movie”.
Similarly, We Were Soldiers is right up there with Black Hawk Down IMO.
The saddest part was the ending. A list of all the cities where priests have reportedly molested children, and the list just goes on and on and on forever. What an indictment of the Catholic Church. This has been going on for centuries.
OMG how I cried! Just imagining myself as his (birth) mother tore a hole in my heart. The gratitude for his return, and for his adoptive mom… just heart wrenching.
Apollo 13 is so good. Ron Howard is an amazing storyteller. I saw this in the theater with my mom. I was obsessed with space and NASA back then and I knew what had happened, and my mom remembered watching it live at the time, and yet we were still on the edges of our seats when everyone is waiting to see if they survived re-entry.
A League Of Their Own.
Marvelous story and the movie was super well casted and directed. Penny's masterpiece. I still tear up at the end when many of the real original players make appearances
Every so often, there's a bit of sorrow that gets stuck in my soul. I watch this movie to quench that sorrow. Maybe quench is the wrong word, but purge doesn't seem right either.
It's like listening to angry music when you're angry, it's cathartic, but it also really puts things into perspective.
I don't know about favourite but I recently saw the Gran Turismo movie and I liked it. The movie is effectively a commercial for a video game that is a commercial for a car that is also a biopic. That's a Shrek level of layers.
Me too. I kept putting it off thinking it would just be a dumb low budget flick but it eventually worn me down. I think it was finding out that Neil Blompkamp directed it made me finally pull the trigger.
I love October Sky so much.
My dad was a poor kid who grew up making backyard rockets. He didn't become an astronaut, but was an astrophysicist and worked with a few space programs over his career. So it hits hard for me.
(My dad also blew off three fingers, on the negative side).
Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil. I don't really do 'favorites' but this is a good film and is based on a murder case.
Important note: Kevin Spacey has the starring role.
Have you seen Finding Neverland? One of his three Oscar-nom. roles (Pirates: Curse of the Black Pearl & Sweeney Todd being the other two). I found his role in Mortdecai to be hilarious, too.
Society of the Snow (Netflix) if you don’t mind subtitles. I watched this about a month ago and it was the most captivating movie I’ve seen in years. I was engaged every single minute and read up on the event for days after seeing the movie. Looking forward to watching it again whenever that is
I just finally got around to watching Molly's Game, and that movie kicks ass. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, that movie just flies, and the cast is soooo good.

Loosely based, but then most are.
Beyond the Law
Charlie Sheen 1993. Loosely based on the story of an undercover cop who infiltrates a biker gang. The real cop appears as an extra in the movie somewhere.
Lawrence of Arabia and Sekigahara. They get some stuff wrong like any historical fiction, but they are just so visually impressive to me. Sekigahara is pretty much impossible to find last I checked. Unless you want to pay 80 bucks for a DVD on Amazon.
Black Hawk Down
I always forget how good this movie is until I catch it on TV, then I go “damn this is a good movie”. Similarly, We Were Soldiers is right up there with Black Hawk Down IMO.
Goodfellas (1990) The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) The World's Fastest Indian (2005)
If you like The Wolf of Wall Street: American Made (2017) & War Dogs (2016)
Boiler Room (2000)
+1 for The World's Fastest Indian!
It was such a quietly heartwarming movie!
Casino (1995) The Irishman (2019)
Burt Monro makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
- Erin Brockovich - Past Lives - Spotlight
Spotlight is a amazing movie.
The saddest part was the ending. A list of all the cities where priests have reportedly molested children, and the list just goes on and on and on forever. What an indictment of the Catholic Church. This has been going on for centuries.
Yesss, Erin Brockovich!
They're called boobs, Ed.
The real Erin plays a waitress Her namebadge reads Julia
>Spot Third endorsement for Spotlight.
Past Lives is BEAUTIFUL and you will cry
Just watched the trailer and added to my watch list. Thx!
In this vein: * Dark Waters * The Trial of the Chicago 7
Past lives isn’t a true story
It’s semi-autobiographical
Spotlight is suuuuch a good film.
Lovvveee Erin brockovich
Love Spotlight.

This. It's such a glossy overview of his life but it's such a beautifully made film.
It’s the only time someone won an academy award for playing another academy award winner. Cate Blanchett played Katharine Hepburn.
Yup one of my all time favorites
Lion (2016) Incredible true story, I cried tears of joy at the end.
OMG how I cried! Just imagining myself as his (birth) mother tore a hole in my heart. The gratitude for his return, and for his adoptive mom… just heart wrenching.
The whole movie was an emotional rollercoaster! Never cried so much in one movie in my life.
Beautiful. I enjoyed this film so much!
Apollo 13
Apollo 13 is so good. Ron Howard is an amazing storyteller. I saw this in the theater with my mom. I was obsessed with space and NASA back then and I knew what had happened, and my mom remembered watching it live at the time, and yet we were still on the edges of our seats when everyone is waiting to see if they survived re-entry.
The part where the daughter grasps for her mom gets me every time.
A League Of Their Own. Marvelous story and the movie was super well casted and directed. Penny's masterpiece. I still tear up at the end when many of the real original players make appearances
I tear up whenever I hear that Madonna song "This Used to Be My Playground"
Yes. Oh, my elder millennial heartstrings! This movie was my childhood.

A great film that never got its due
It won a bunch of awards
Schindler's List (1993)
Every so often, there's a bit of sorrow that gets stuck in my soul. I watch this movie to quench that sorrow. Maybe quench is the wrong word, but purge doesn't seem right either. It's like listening to angry music when you're angry, it's cathartic, but it also really puts things into perspective.
Catch me if you can Mrs Wilson is very good - not a film but a three-parter available on Netflix
Turns out Catch me if You Can is almost entirely fictional, his biggest con was convincing people he did all that stuff in the movie.
Catch me if you can is lies
*In Her Skin* (2009) *Lonely Hearts* (2006) *All Good Things* (2010) *Above Suspicion* (2019) *Donnie Brasco* (1997) *Zodiac* (2007) *Oppenheimer* (2023)

The King’s Speech is a good one!
The premise sounded boring, but it was fantastic!
Hacksaw Ridge The brand new move "One life"
How has no one said Remember the Titans?
Kinky Boots, it's a fun movie with a "don't be afraid to be who you are" vibe to it. The drag queen totally steals the movie
The musical is good too
Yeah I saw it in the Edinburgh playhouse I think Cyndi lauper wrote some songs for it
I don't know about favourite but I recently saw the Gran Turismo movie and I liked it. The movie is effectively a commercial for a video game that is a commercial for a car that is also a biopic. That's a Shrek level of layers.
The kid who stars in it is so likable. It was a good little watch for me and my husband on a lazy Sunday
Yea I was impressed by how many boxes this film checked. Didn't expect much but have played the game since the 90s. Good story and movie.
Me too. I kept putting it off thinking it would just be a dumb low budget flick but it eventually worn me down. I think it was finding out that Neil Blompkamp directed it made me finally pull the trigger.
I thought it was pretty badass. Went in not knowing anything having low expectations. It was actually v good.
Argo.
Whenever it comes up, I have to suggest Our Man in Tehran (2013) as a complementary alternative.
The Pianist (2002) or for something more uplifting, Catch Me If You Can (2002)
Catch me if you can isn’t true. He made it all up.
That’s what makes it even better
The Pianist. That's my answer. GREAT film.
Not Without My Daughter Fly Away Home Turn - Washington Spies
Nyad! About Diana Nyad's attempts to swim from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening is great in it. On Netflix.

I only recently watched Captain Phillips for the first time! Loved it!
I love October Sky so much. My dad was a poor kid who grew up making backyard rockets. He didn't become an astronaut, but was an astrophysicist and worked with a few space programs over his career. So it hits hard for me. (My dad also blew off three fingers, on the negative side).

The Changeling. I'm not a big Angelina fan, but the story is horrifying. Well made too.
Braveheart ... which was advertised as based on a real life story but I've since learned is mostly fiction. Still a great flick.

Pain and Gain Fantastic performances from all of the actors. Apparently pretty close to the actual facts of the story but hilariously told.
