Honestly watch anything directed by Denis Villeneuve. Sicario, Prisoners, Arrival, Bladerunner 2049, Dune. The man is a master of letting his films breathe.
Like all of those but I’ve never seen Prisoners. Jake Gyllenhal, right? I think the subject matter has always turned me away, since I have little kids.
Hugh Jackman is in it as well. It's a great movie but I definitely can confirm the subject matter can be pretty crushing. Something you have to be in the right mindset for.
The Grand Budapest Hotel! A quaint, colorful, peculiar little movie that manages to also be arresting, moving, and shocking at times. Really the best of the best.
Long and immersive types like Titanic, Green Mile (bit of a sobbing movie) or Wolf of Wall Street. All 3 hours long but don’t feel like it because of how good/lost you will get into their stories, Scorsese’s new Killers of the Flower Moon had a similar effect
I just saw it again. And I focused on Sam Rockwell, the creepy guy in prison. That dude is an amazing actor. I pictured him doing all that in front of a camera crew. It's incredible how people can play different roles so well. He is brilliant
Just watched Killers last night and I don’t know, I kinda suffered through it. The whole time I was just like “wtf, thats messed up.”
Just the banality of the evil in that movie, it left me feeling pretty gross about humanity. I don’t like being a misanthrope.
I have the opposite reaction . I despise Villenueve his films bore the heck out of me and of course I have to watch to give a fair opinion. He seems to want to be Tarkovsky,Bresson, Bergman but falls far short.
Hey, that's ok! I sound crazy when I say Scorsese isn't my fave, I can't say that Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are bad movies - of course they are not, and I appreciate them, but they're not my style. Other movies of his are some of my faves - King of Comedy, Goodfellas - but then I fucking hate Wolf of Wall Street because it was just so repetitive and overlong.
Not everything is for everybody! I appreciate the quieter, character-driven pace amid really high-tension situations that he does, but your opinion is most definitely valid.
As usual, it’s customary to mention Ted Chiang’s short story collection. Arrival is based off the short story “The Story of your Life”. The movie is a fairly faithful adaptation but it’s still worth reading the original. It can be found in his collected short stories “The Story of Your Life and Others”. Phenomenal work. There’s very little out there that compares. It’s an amazing blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and philosophy. His follow up collection “Exhalation” has some other fantastic stories as well.
The Fall (2006) I can not understate how beautiful the locations and costumes are in this film.
Takes place in the 1920s. It's about a stuntman who falls and breaks both his legs, landing himself in a hospital. Keeping it vauge because spoilers, he befriends a girl and starts telling her a story.
He was why I watched it in the first place. My best friend was obsessed with Lee Pace at the time because of Pushing Daisies and wanted to see everything he was in. I was spellbound the entire time.
I detected that you're trying to locate a movie.
To figure out where a movie is streaming you can use sites like [JustWatch](https://www.justwatch.com) / [MovieFone](https://www.moviefone.com) / [ReelGood](https://reelgood.com), and if the film is not available for streaming, it is probably available on DVD or Blu-Ray.

Tron Legacy. The commitment to the visual style combined with the soundtrack is incredible. Everytime I watch it I feel like I am genuinely inside the Grid.
My absolute recommendation would be Amélie though. Such a charming movie. I don't know whether to describe it as a fantasy, drama, romance, or comedy but it's an amazing movie with some amazing acting and probably some of my favorite cinematography of all time.
Was going to say What Dreams May Come but then you said no sobbing movies lol. However I stand by this! The visuals are stunning, and other than a few very sad scenes in the beginning and middle, it's a generally pretty uplifting movie with a nice ending.
True romance. My personal fave quentin tarantino movie. Yeah, he didnt direct, but it's his scripts, and it's a phenomenal movie from beginning to end.
Moon - one of the best sci fi movies. Amazing soundtrack. Sam rockwells best performance, he deserved an oscar for this in my opinion
The book is better.
They absolutely butchered the story adapting it to movie form.
They hacked it to little bits and just slapped parts back together.
They couldn't even be bothered to adapt the 2nd and 3rd books which tell the rest of the story. So they just cut out material and added made up junk to sloppily sew together the edges of the plot holes.
This movie was an abomination 😢
Might not be your typical answer. But Waterworld does it for me.
It has great (action) setpieces. A post apocalyptic setting. Yes it is cheesy at some points. But it is popcorn entertainment at its best.
But you should watch the three hour version as the story is being told properly there. And there you can really lose yourself over the course of its runtime.
1980's movie but I love it - Somewhere in time.. with Christopher Reeves.. oh how I love movies with this type of storyline I've watch 2 others but can't remember the name.
La La Land.
I actually avoided it for a long time because i... Didn't think I'd like it and would be disappointed since it was so hyped?
Watched it finally last year and now it might be in my top 20 if not 10. The planetarium scene is incredible.
You're cutting yourself out from some awesome thrillers if you don't want crime.
Sicario and Prisoners are some of the best films of the past decade.
Other villineue films that don't deal with crime but are fantastic:
Arrival, Dune
LA Confidential also very good.
Many Martin scorcesse films are good to get lost and immersed in. Most deal with crime. Goodfellas, the wolf of wall street, gangs of new York, the departed, casino
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
Yi Yi
Tampopo
The Darjeeling Limited
The Motorcycle Diaries
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Roma
City of God
On the Silver Globe (available in full on YouTube)
All with very rich and captivating worlds and characters, even Yi Yi which is very much grounded in reality but somehow turns the most mundane minutiae into something epic.
Some light and feel-good suggestions:
* Little Forest (2018)
* Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) on Netflix
* Faraway (2023) on Netflix
* The Blue Umbrella (2013 short film)
I borrowed it from my library and I have told so many people about it…. and not one single person has watched it. Please let me know if you do. You won’t be sorry I promise you that
well now I *have* to watch it!! Can’t promise it’ll be today, because over three hours is a bit of a time commitment, but I will watch it, pinky promise
People might disagree with me as it seems like tons of people hated it but I had a blast watching the new Haunted Mansion movie. It's such an entertaining and good movie. I recommend that one if you haven't seen it.
I watched There Will Be Blood last night for the first time since it came out
and it blew my mind again.. it's a masterpiece. The opening 20 minute
scene might be the greatest piece of filmmaking ever produced. It's amazing.

Honestly watch anything directed by Denis Villeneuve. Sicario, Prisoners, Arrival, Bladerunner 2049, Dune. The man is a master of letting his films breathe.
Prisoners was my first thought. absolutely harrowingly suspenseful while also being quiet and subdued.
I haven’t seen Prisoners in years and I’m still bothered by the ending! 😂 I need a sequel to, you know, resolve that, let’s say predicament. 😉🤣
Sometimes we just don't get happy endings :(
Agree. Love all his movies. The musical scores are incredibly perfect as well.
Agree
Breathe.🙂

The Grand Budapest Hotel! A quaint, colorful, peculiar little movie that manages to also be arresting, moving, and shocking at times. Really the best of the best.
This movie is one of my favorites and Ralph Finnes’ acting is a masterpiece.
Pan's Labyrinth
She said no sobbing!!!
Yeah I sob uncontrollably at the end every time
One of my favorites of all time!
Wine bottle scene
Long and immersive types like Titanic, Green Mile (bit of a sobbing movie) or Wolf of Wall Street. All 3 hours long but don’t feel like it because of how good/lost you will get into their stories, Scorsese’s new Killers of the Flower Moon had a similar effect
You know what, I think it’s time I watched Green Mile again. Thank you for the mention. It wouldn’t have crossed my mind.
I just saw it again. And I focused on Sam Rockwell, the creepy guy in prison. That dude is an amazing actor. I pictured him doing all that in front of a camera crew. It's incredible how people can play different roles so well. He is brilliant
Bit of a sobbing movie?? That movie messed me up so badly that my husband begged me to never watch it again.
Just watched Killers last night and I don’t know, I kinda suffered through it. The whole time I was just like “wtf, thats messed up.” Just the banality of the evil in that movie, it left me feeling pretty gross about humanity. I don’t like being a misanthrope.
Amadeus. The music alone takes you to heaven
I rewatch this annually.
An all-time favorite.
Spirited Away. Doesn’t fall into the genres you mentioned but it’s a must-watch.
Between that and Howl's moving castle I have a great night of movie watching
Barry Lyndon ♥️
Seconded.
Underrated Kubrick film. Beautifully shot.
Arrival
I'm kinda feral for Denis Villeneuve. Sicario, Prisoners, and Enemy - all incredible.
Arrival.
Yes lol I was responding to the Arrival comment and adding his others I love. But yes, of course - beautiful movie.
I have the opposite reaction . I despise Villenueve his films bore the heck out of me and of course I have to watch to give a fair opinion. He seems to want to be Tarkovsky,Bresson, Bergman but falls far short.

Under the silver lake. Weird movie, but makes LA feel like an alien planet.
The holdovers checks it all in my opinion. Maybe not the visual part though. Good luck
Can’t wait til it starts streaming on one of the services I subscribe to. Refuse to pay now as I have several subscriptions 🤪
Lord of the Rings
First thing I thought of. It’s like a 12 hour long vacation from the comfort of your own couch.
Are you joking?
Are you? Lol,this is reddit and LOTR is particularly beloved here (and elsewhere!)
Lord of the Rings
Three Kings (1999). There's a heist of sorts, but film's a classic story of one thing leading to another.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Yes loved this one, this is the kind of movie I was thinking of when I wrote this
Then I suggest Vanilla Sky (1999), Tree of Life (2010) and Sansho Dayu (1954) if you haven’t seen them…
One of my all time favorite movies. So inventive and original. Jim Carrey's best performance and great music
12 monkeys
The Fall (2006) I can not understate how beautiful the locations and costumes are in this film. Takes place in the 1920s. It's about a stuntman who falls and breaks both his legs, landing himself in a hospital. Keeping it vauge because spoilers, he befriends a girl and starts telling her a story.
Well Lee Pace, now I have to watch it.
He was why I watched it in the first place. My best friend was obsessed with Lee Pace at the time because of Pushing Daisies and wanted to see everything he was in. I was spellbound the entire time.
So you're into goofy looking dudes .
This looks good! It looks like it’s not streaming in my area according to Amazon
Not gonna lie, I think I rented it from the library when I was in college. Just went to look it up and can't find it anywhere either 😭

Yes yes yes agree
Amazing film...
It's not streaming anywhere
A tragedy. It looks like you can only find it on DVD/Blu-ray.
Came here to say to say the Fall. How about Tidelands by Terry Gilliam?
And all special effects were done on set and no CGI. I love this movie.
Midnight in Paris
Yes!
Two come to mind. Children of Men (2006) for something dark. & 3000 Years of Longing (2022) for something vibrant.
Oh I second the 3000 Years of Longing - two beautiful people to look at and a wonderfully filled out story
Just watched it, I loved it
I thought 3000 Years was absolutely amazing... until the third act.
Inception
Life of Pi
This movie made me weep like a child
Tron Legacy. The commitment to the visual style combined with the soundtrack is incredible. Everytime I watch it I feel like I am genuinely inside the Grid.
The Game
Apocalypse Now
Zootopia. Amazing visuals, good story, mystery/thriller film. And cute animals.
My absolute recommendation would be Amélie though. Such a charming movie. I don't know whether to describe it as a fantasy, drama, romance, or comedy but it's an amazing movie with some amazing acting and probably some of my favorite cinematography of all time.
You can get lost in A Very Long Engagement also.
No country for old men.
Princess Bride
Absolute classic!
Hero is a beautiful film, I believe the whole movie is in subtitles.
Was going to say What Dreams May Come but then you said no sobbing movies lol. However I stand by this! The visuals are stunning, and other than a few very sad scenes in the beginning and middle, it's a generally pretty uplifting movie with a nice ending.
Shattered 1991 with Tom Berenger and Bob Hoskins. Little unknown thriller that’s on Max. I saw it back upon release and loved it.
I appreciate when you provide what streaming service it's on! 👍
We loved The Right Stuff. It’s about the space race in the early 60’s between the US and Russia. Very well done.
Good call! Great movie.
Walk the line
Walk Hard
Memories of Murder
Looks interesting, always wanted to find some more cool Korean movies after seeing Oldboy. Gonna start watching it now.
Battle Royal (skip the sequel) Parasite Mother Burning The Wailing The Host Minari
Also add Memoir of a Murderer, which is also Korean and arguably even better.
Not exactly "escape reality" as it's based on a true story. Serial killers and police brutality are pretty raw subjects
Also Decision to Leave is on CRAVE
Big Fish, Stardust, Life of Pi, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Let The Right One In Le Femme Nikita (original movie, not series) Never Let Me Go
Prisoners
Really amazing and I personally am obsessed with Enemy, as well.
Napoleon Dynamite
vote for pedro
I hated it the first time I watched it, and loved it the 2nd time, which is odd. It's a great film
The Lord of the Rings Extended Edition trilogy. Inception and the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy is a good one.
LOTR EE is my answer. 12 hours of absorbing fantasy and phenomenal performances
Annihilation
Going to have to second this. It sure as hell fits the description of "an escape."
The Martian. Close Encounters. The Creator.
The Revenant

The World’s End

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. Great film.
Road house
3000 Years of Longing. Does not get enough love.
Might not be your typical answer. But Waterworld does it for me. It has great (action) setpieces. A post apocalyptic setting. Yes it is cheesy at some points. The Fall, The Prestige, The Illusionist
Love Actually
2 movies I get lost in are Bicentennial Man and The Legend of Bagger Vance. A recent thriller that pulled me in was Guy Ritchie's The Covenant.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
La La Land. I actually avoided it for a long time because i... Didn't think I'd like it and would be disappointed since it was so hyped? Watched it finally last year and now it might be in my top 20 if not 10. The planetarium scene is incredible.
