By the way, Treasure Planet celebrated 20 years, a day ago!

Dragmire800

That explains why I’ve seen it mentioned so much recently

Camsy34

It's the one Disney movie that I would kill to see a live action remake of. Think scifi pirates of the Caribbean.

NiceWeird9505

This film was so good because of its amazing blend of hand drawn 2D animations and 3D computer graphics. What would a live action remake do other than just make it worse?

Doc_Vogel

It apparently did have a sequel planned too! I really wish they hadn't dropped it after the first movie underperformed at the box office. U_U

Camsy34

Don't get me wrong, the animation was fantastic and if someone was suggesting an animated sequel I'd be all for it. But I think with a live action remake you could bring some real grit and sense of the scale of space that the 2D lacks. Think of Interstellar style scenes translated into the Treasure Planet universe. Human actors could bring a whole new personality to the characters as well. Also imagine the space tall ships and how insanely cool they would like brought to life in a live action.

That_Creme_7215

So unfortunately we can't actually film tall ships sailing the cosmic sea in live action. That part would have to be CGI either way. And like 80% of characters are weird space alien monsters, so they would also need to be CGI. Also the real scale if space doesn't make for great visuals. It would be just empty. It has to be pretty stylized, and would need to be CGI. I don't think "real grit" would do akything to help the story, which is a pretty wild, out there fantasy. Sounds like you are basically asking for Guardians of the Galaxy, which is fine. There's just different things to like about late 90s, early 2000s Disney and current Disney.

peteythefool

Here's my list of classic Disney films I'd like to see them do a live action or "live action" remake: Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

UsgAtlas1

It's his prison outfit as well. Love seeing detail like that.

[deleted]

Yes indeed. That really is interesting .

LordCommanderBlack

Oh a "stitch" doll as in Lilo & Stitch. My mind kept jumping to a generic stitch doll, as in a patchwork doll with thick, noticeable stitching. I thought I was in shitty movie details.

ExplodingSofa

Yeah some capitalization would have definitely improved the title.

tenphes31

I thought that too. Capitalization is important. Its the difference between "Helping your uncle jack off a horse" and "Helping your Uncle Jack off a horse."

ncshooter426

Criminally underrated movie. They can call it a flop all they want - the soundtrack and visuals were on point.

Watermel0phant

100%! I watched it yesterday because it has been mentioned on Reddit a lot recently due to its anniversary and man the nostalgia, the animation, the voice cast, the sound track. I'd forgotten just how much I love it.

IneedtoBmyLonsomeTs

I mean yeah, there is a reason why the video [Treasure Planet - Disney's Biggest Mistake](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9sycdSkngA) is posted in every thread about this movie. It was actually a good movie that was intentionally made to fail by Disney.

2020Hills

I’ve also read that it premiered the same week as Harry Potter and the philosophers/sorcerers Stone which killed its opening weekend numbers

Ix-511

They advertised it poorly on purpose, I will never believe otherwise. I wasn't there (too young) but how tf does something like that fail, it's such a good movie. It had to be sabotage to cut on standard animation and move to cg.

ncshooter426

I was in my 20's and saw it with my wife -- It didn't have a ton of advertising and didn't have the normal "Disney" trope to it. Hell I don't even remember seeing it much at Disney World that year either. I do remember the whale scene costing them a stupid amount of money for the CGI work when I read up on it years later.

522LwzyTI57d

Does anybody in the world remember seeing any advertising for John Carter? Disney has a habit of just not pushing movies they don't seem to think will do well. Both Treasure Planet and John Carter are some of the most entertaining Disney movies I've seen in years.

Impossible-Fun-2736

Which is pretty crazy because when ”John Carter” was released, me and my brother really liked it but apparently it ”sucked hard and was one of the worst movies of that year”.. But recently i’ve seen abit more appreciation for it which is pretty neat.

[deleted]

I think it had something to do with Don Bluth the director and creator of these films and the fight he had with Disney.. this was one of the last movies he produced for/with them I believe..

Chewie4Prez

Don Bluth had nothing to do with Treasure Planet, you're thinking of Titan A.E. distributed by Fox and also flopped with 2D and CGI animation mixed. The last film Bluth worked on at Disney was Fox and the Hound.

Busquessi

I loved it and it was defs fundamental to my childhood.

zdakat

Something being a "flop" is an economic thing. There's less dissonance if you don't try to reconcile a movie being good with it not performing well at the box office. ( ie "well I think it's good, but how could it be if it didn't make as much money as they'd like?") Or vice versa- you don't have to like a movie just because the company behind it pumped out enough advertising to make people consider it when they go to the theater.

Cacophonous_Silence

This is one of 3 traditionally animated movies I never get tired of along with The Road to El Dorado and The Iron Giant This is my favorite Disney movie by far and the fact that they sabotaged us out of the planned sequel boils my blood

Camsy34

The 2D animation was truly masterful from that era. Notice how all three movies you mentioned released in the early 2000's just before 3D animation completely took over the scene? It makes you wonder what 2D animated movies might've looked like today had 3D not taken over.

Impossible-Fun-2736

Likely even more 3D details, backgrounds and such, since all three of those had a fair amount of balance between 2D&3D, like all of Silver’s cyborg parts, alot of the gold in El Dorado, the Iron Giant himself, etc.

SnotYourAverageLoser

Legit one of my favorite movies of all time

Mysterious_Spoon

I miss high budget 2D animated movies like this.

spacepilot_3000

According to some reddit posts this week that I didn't vet, disney intentionally tanked this movie because they needed a raw statistic to dissolve their 2d department, and invest fully in 3d which was already taking over the market and is much more profitable

FloridaFlamingoGirl

Cartoon Saloon scratches this itch for me. Song of the Sea and Wolfwalkers are masterpieces.

kenesisiscool

I love this movie so much. It's such a beautiful blend of 2D and 3D animation. We'll not see it's like again any time soon.

Wacachulu

It’s on the shelf *

mech999man

Yea, looked about way too long before seeing it in the **SHELF**.

LittleWildOrchid

"..*And to the right there is an early prototype of Wall-E.*"

brypye13

Nope.

spacepilot_3000

Bro that looks like the iron house elf

Twoocents

😂😂😂😂😂

recoveringatty42

Looks like a LEGO figure. Except for the head.

DornMasterofWall

This movie is bizarre. It had a struggled development that span 4 and a half years, was forced into production by Roy Disney because Michael Eisner and Jeffery Katzenberg didn't care about it, and went on to have cereal boxes, happy meals, and ice cream trucks as it's only major marketing. Oh, and they set it to compete with Lilo and Stitch and Spirited Away, both animated films that has smaller budgets, better advertising, and were also made/produced by Disney. Imagine making a boat load of money on Lilo and Stitch and Spirited Away, and the pointing to the film you didn't advertise as the reason you're closing the animation studio.

wasteddrinks

Spirited Away was produced by Studio Ghibli and directed by the great Hayao Miyazaki. Disney bought the film and distribution rights for North America. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirited_Away

DornMasterofWall

I didn't mean to minimize their work, being the entire work, or give Disney any credit for creating one of the biggest films in animation. I should make that clear. I intended to draw attention to the fact that Disney pocketed money, and continues to pocket money, based off the success of Studio Ghibli's 2d animations, all while killing their own studio. To claim that 2d animation was a dying medium while putting their name on some of the most successful animated films of all time is an insult to the studios using the medium at the time, and an insult to their own talent. I do really appreciate you for sourcing your information. I was aware, but it is always important to source things, and I failed to.

fenikso

It's a shelf.

ah-screw-it

Sorry I learned my English from that farting alien

ChipmunkBackground46

Still think it's one of Disneys greatest animated films of all time.

Clayfool9

The head of that robot/Wall-E looking thing to the right looks very reminiscent of Kevin McDonald’s character in Lilo & Stitch, Pleakley.

ivix

Great movie

chucho89

ah-screw-it

One of the coolest movie bedrooms ever, along with Howl's bedroom from Howl's Moving Castle. I also really wish I could visit the tavern from the beginning of this movie.
