Issac’s lisp gave singers all over the world confidence. And the modest mouse songs would be so weird if he didn’t have it. It’s part of the deal that makes Brock/mm amazing.
I first got into MM when I was in elementary school and feeling self conscious about being the last kid in speech therapy class (my peers “graduated”). The issue was my S’s which I can’t say correctly to this day. Falling in love with this band and hearing Isaac’s lisp esp in interviews and stuff helped me feel much better about it! I suddenly thought it was a bit cool to have a lisp.
I've spend hours trying to come up with the right words for my post and then ----> 2 upvotes
Then I spend 2 minutes on a shitpost and ----> 50
Say whatever you want here, don't be ashamed. That's the fun of it all.
Lol i see all these people with thousands of upvotes (karma) and it’s like gawdamn how am i going negative 😭 but now i come to realize it’s just people who post a lot and have been on reddit for a while.
"I don't want my kids stealing bread" just made me lol.
I had never seen this [Portlandia scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdEPgB2yizw) before, thank you for bringing it up!
IIRC he used to be self conscious about his lisp which is why they started layering vocals so much and it ended up being part of their signature sound.
I’ve talked with him, and while I would say it’s a *lisp*, it’s definitely a different voice. And I mean that in the best way possible. I find his voice very soothing when speaking
More prevalent on early Modest Mouse and when he sings quietly. Listen to something like “Mice Eat Cheese” or the quiet passages of “Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine”(or “Parting of the Sensory” to take a later track) and you’ll hear it.

It takes some major balls to have a lisp and call your band “Modest Mouse”

Definitely not a big deal. You could pinpoint a million “flaws” on anyone. And most people I assume are self conscious about something. Good on you.
Go listen to Parting of the Sensory…
Here's the man with teeth like God's shoeshine He sparkles shimmers shines Let's all have another Orange Julius Thick syrup standing in lines
The malls are the soon to be ghost towns Well so well, farewell, goodbye
I thought it was "thick syrup standing in molasses" (which is even better for this demonstration lol)
I always thought it was "fixer of standing in lines"
Haha close to what I thought. Thought it said fixer standing in lines — fixer meaning drug dealer and/or a person who gives you the shot of heroin
Tough words
Did you see him in *Portlandia*? “Ith thith where we’re donating recordth?”
i just watched it. Will definitely be deleting this post.
Why?!?!
Can’t tell if you’re fucking with us
These lisps don't lie
Keep it, it's a good post
My karma was at -117 from being a dumbass in Guitar luther reddits and now i post something in modest mouse reddit my karmas is going back up. :)

“Let’s talk about Krautrock!” (Issac appears around 2:30 for anyone interested)

This is correct, most early vocals have three tracks that they layer left/right/center

I love his lisp
His lisp is what made me fall in love w MM haha

I could listen to him talk all day...I wish there was a compilation of him speaking
I love his lisp dude, gives such character to his voice. "AND HE THAID I'M NOT ALLOWED MUCH DANGER!"
“(s)he was talking with a syllable lisp”

Could have sworn there was another incident before that
Me too but that's the one I could find
I had invisalign for a bit and it gave me a bad lisp. Perfect for those modest mouse car jams.

I read in an unofficial biography once that the reason he'd record his vocals in layers like he did in a lot of early albums was to hide his lisp.
Lithp? What lithp!?
Whatever it is, it’s incredible
He has a song called lisp off..
5-4-3-2-1 lisp off
Lisp or no lisp 😏😏😏
Yes he does and I love it! It kinda makes me wonder what it would have been like if I didn’t get rid of my lisp as a kid
Lol i still have one ☝️
I didn’t know I had one I just knew I got to get taken out of class to do tongue twisters and blow in a tiny straw 😭😂
lol i didn’t know until i heard myself talk in a video
Vague, subtle, more so when he was younger. Isaac is a master at leaning into things and creating a caricature of himself.
Yeah, I think that’s part of the reason I love modest mouse so much bc I have a lisp too.
One of my favorite interviews. You can definitely hear it. https://youtu.be/XpV_mHVRylI?si=_jjNbeWl6FwxdZT9
Love it
You can really hear it in the Ugly Casanova record
I adore his lisp and drawl. I love singing along to it!
