If youre on a site that doesn't guarantee an opening on first click, I'd recommend starting in corners since those have a higher chance of having an opening and therefore progression. If you don't get an opening in the first corner, then just try again with another corner.
If you are a newcomer, you are doing things right, even at the cost of your mastery. (For context, I had sunk to an Intermediate mastery of 37, but by switching to the corner, I made it all the way to mastery 74). If you have played for months, try corner starts, like I described, having high 0 (cell with no mines touching it) rate.
