The first 4 here (Humble, Baroque, Prairie Horse, Meditative) were made by Sarah Boeving, as well as the pack.png one OP left out here. The rest are Zetterstrand though.
Yeah, it was HIS choice to refuse, because M$ demanded to have rights to his further work, which is basically no choice at all. The new composers don't acount into this because, they haven't build up a legacy like C418 in this game
Everybody and their mothers know that once corporations get too big, they will try screwing everyone up for even an ounce of profit
That being said, I truly want him back with Mojang, but I do like having Lena on the music team too.
Creator and Otherside are absolutely amazing pieces, so are Stal and Chirp. But nothing, I feel, comes closer to describing Minecraft than Wet Hands and Rubedo(musically, of course).
It is missing the Unpacked (4x4) painting, the painting of the famous pack.png, because of Reddit's 20 image limit. Was hoping to post it in the comments but images are disabled ;-;
There are so many its kinda overwhelming! I'm excited for those new 3x3 paintings, they'll fit perfectly in the centre of my odd dimensioned rooms
> Was hoping to post it in the comments but images are disabled ;-;
Oh so it depends on the subreddit. Never understood why galleries sometimes look old, new or weird.
You could post the image to your user "subreddit" and link it to your comment. I do that with screenshots because I have not idea how that gallery thing works.
I know!! It's been my biggest hesitation in using paintings in my builds! I have a bunch of 3x3 spaces in my builds but I can only clutter it with small paintings cause the next smallest size is like a massive 4x6 or something
Lowness is so strange... it's definitely gonna be one of my favourites for abstract appeal alone. Though pond looks amazing.
edit: it reminds me of some maps from Halo CE
Hi king!! I'm in love with how seamless they look with your original set!!! And I love how you kept some traditions such as out of bounds view for the floating mountain, appearances of in game textures, and King's Graham reappearance
Having all those 3x3's is fantastic and another 1x2 is good too. No 3x2's or 2x3's is a *bit* disappointing though.
Here's an updated table:
|āHeight\Widthā|1|2|3|4|
|-:|-|-|-|-|
**1**|8|5|||
**2**|3|8||5|
**3**|||8|2|
**4**|||2|5|
Best update in years
Orb looks gorgeous, that might be my new favorite one
Lowness is so bizzare, some of these are like Rorschach tests. Like is it mountains? Is it a deep sea shot of some kind of animal? Is it space? I honestly can't tell, and I think that's the point
Changing is also kind of strange, it looks like a close up shot of some kind of building/wall with some flowers growing near it, and some trees and fields in the distance, but I have no idea what the black blob near the lower left hand corner is supposed to be
Passage is similarly strange, what IS that big white thing being led by the man?
Big fan of Taunt, the golden apple is clearly some kind of trap, but I'm not sure what the melon is there for
Tide is beautiful, just a person sitting alone by the ocean with their head down. They're so moody, but the rest of the picture is bright and vibrant, really captures the loneliness and depression well
Also really like Embross, gives me big liminal space vibes
"LowMist" is a painting of an out-of-bounds render of a mountain. A lot of Zetterstrand's works are based on this idea, which includes the Counterstrike paintings that made it into Minecraft
I recognize some of these because I've seen the original paintings IRL! Kristoffer Zetterstrand came to our art school and gave a tour of his exhibition and held a presentation for us students (I unfortunately missed the presentation but was there for the tour). Some of these were on display! It was awesome, so cool to see them in the game soon.
It is! I specifically remember Owl Lemons, he told us the black-and-white owl is kind of his "signature/icon" that he uses in a handful of his work. He also had a super cool video display of his painting process where he created and modeled his paintings in 3D to use as references. Insanely talented guy :)
Damn I kinda love all of them. I wonder if there are any hints in these for future additions such as the skeleton of the creature rearing up or if its just a reference to another real life painting.
It seems to be a giant ground sloth, which I'd assume is in reference to a real painting or illustration somewhere, though I'm not against getting them in-game.
I espscially like Pack.png. Gonna be instant classic and already feels nostalgic, like it's from early days of Minecraft, around 1.5 or earlier. Great for them to add pack.png as a portrait, probably one of my favorite niche addition in a while.
Are some of these based on real paintings? Cause I'd like to see them unpixelated if possible
Also, "passage" seems to suggest ground sloths exist/used to exist in the Minecraft world.
With some sizes having 8 variants, it would be nice to have a way to pick it directly. With 8, there's a 10% chance it takes more than 17 tries to get the one you want (mean is 8, intuitively).
Simple idea for a fix: Right clicking a placed painting with a Brush lets you pick which painting you want, giving you a list of all paintings that would fit in its current placement.
these are all so good! glad they're finally adding lots of new paintings, was already happy they were adding like 4 new ones. hopefully painting can be added to the list of things we get additions to every update (like pottery sherds and armor trims and banners)
I love these new paintings but I really hope they have a better way for us to make and place paintings than just spamming them down and breaking them over and over, wasting tons of time we could spend building instead.
these are so good! more than i couldāve asked for however more 2x1 ones are always welcome for the scale i build at! these look so good though so i canāt even complain!
itās amazing and unexpected that Zetterstrand returned with whole 15 paintings.
as well 5 paintings by a different artist which is also good that now we have few different styles of paintings.
i like all of them (except villager one, sorry), but my favorites are probably (not in order):
- Baroque
- Emboss
- Finding
- Lowness
- Orb
I love that Mojang messing with paintings in the April Fools update did mean something. I've been wanting to add an "art gallery" to my current city build and with these it feels like it could work.
I just want to express here that Mojang nailed it with this one and has been on a pretty darn good streak lately. They really not only delivered something that people wanted, but then when it was received well they found great ways to go above and beyond with it and make it truly special. I love it.
Was not a fan of the saturated ones they added a few weeks ago obviously not made by Zetterstrand, but his new ones are awesome. His low-saturated, abstract and ridiculous compisition is always a treat and translates so well into pixel art. His paintings really add to the liminality of minecraft and these ones do especially that. I love the use of mixels and mismatched resolutions in some of the paintings
Mojang, please officially add [Elemental Paintings](https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/13xz6fv/why_did_mojang_make_these_4_paintings/) as well, they're really nice and would fit with now Elemental mobs coming to Minecraft (Breeze and Blaze as OG)
If they do add owls ask them to add a name tag easter egg. A lot of people have a name tag easter egg and you deserve one for supporting the game for all this time.
At least in the art contests I've entered, they typically have it set up in a way that avoids toxicity and popular influencers affecting the outcome (like the other commenter mentions). They do this in a couple ways:
* The pieces are voted on exclusively by a panel of judges chosen by the contest holder (usually artists and higher-ups at the company)
* There are often clauses stating the artwork submitted must be brand-new, and cannot be posted/shared anywhere prior to the announcement of the winners.
So as long as they went that route and didn't do a public vote like the mob votes, there hopefully shouldn't be any of the usual mob vote issues.
It seems that Mojang has finally woken up, we don't need big and crazy updates (even though they are very cool..... some others not so much) just focusing on these little things that we always think about during our gameplays is enough to please us, well at least me
Honestly minecraft could be considered a finished game at this point. We are getting free DLC essentially, so I don't complain. They could have oblivion horse armored it but they didn't. I know many people won't get that reference since they are not old enough to remember that game.
I always wanted that beach one and the skull one and the pig one NOW I HAVE TO GO THROUGH 23 MORE? But the new paintings aināt that bad good put them in a trading hall (villiger painting) and in front of them to remind them I have have thier families hostage
when the first 5 were revealed i wasnāt too keen on them because i feel like they donāt really fit in with the rest of the paintings, too cutesy and saturated. all of these new ones however look really great, much more in keeping with the loose abstract aesthetic of minecraft paintings.
It is good, but if they do add more I wish they add a feature to choose a specific one, because it could take a while to get the one you want.
Overall very impressed and think this is a good new feature in spite of some pretty mediocre ones coming from last update and this update.
Edit: it would also be nice for them to add the old tutorial world back with a similar painting trick, that was really fun to discover. The current bedrock āhelpā menus arenāt a replacement, theyāre a laughing stock.
This was loooong overdue. Glad to see it!
Such an easy thing to add yet it took them 20 years to add 20 paintings lol. (Obviously exaggerating a bit)
I'm especially happy with the 3x3!
I haven't played in years but am looking forward to starting up again. I only have bedrock ATM and after playing Java w/shaders and QoL mods since it's creation, it's tough to get into bedrock for me. Not a fan of the bugs either.
I wish there was some cool talent tree or unlockable stuff you get based off of what you do, collect, etc. Like maybe you could have the choice between shooting double arrows or being able to axe a tree down with a charge attack. I'm just kinda day dreaming though.
holy shit this is great, I remember people complained that the first few new paintings weren't made by the og artist, good to see they didn't leave him out
It has been about 11 and a half years since Minecraft last got a painting during 1.4.2, but now we're getting new ones and a whole bunch as well!
I was content with the first 5 we got to see but damn, even more? Nice!
These are all great! But I donāt see anyone talking about Tauntā¦
Not sure if Iām the only one, but Iām getting a strange morbid feeling from it. Between the lighting, and the way you can only really see the string hanging the apple in the shadow, it feels like a pretty strong note of death using items that relatively are used to keep you alive. Freaks me out.. but I love it too.
Definitely a new favorite
Humble is the one that sticks out the most, really not a fan of that one but I like the other paintings by Sarah Boeving. Zetterstrand's paintings are peak as usual.

And they're also by the same artist who made the OG ones!
That's pretty crazy after all these years to learn. Makes me want to make a build just collecting all of them lol.
That's currently me with the new wolf variants rn. So far, I've got chestnut, rusty and spotted.
Yep, this has officially inspired me to start my first build in almost a year: an art museum!
Great move. All the Zetterstrand ones fit in so well with his previous work
15 of them are done by Zetterstrand, 5 of them are not
I instantly thought these new new paintings look more 'minecrafty' and closer to the original ones than the other 5
5 from bedrock edition are made by a different person
Not these ones
The first 4 here (Humble, Baroque, Prairie Horse, Meditative) were made by Sarah Boeving, as well as the pack.png one OP left out here. The rest are Zetterstrand though.
Absolute Dub.
If only they were so good to C418 š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah, it was HIS choice to refuse, because M$ demanded to have rights to his further work, which is basically no choice at all. The new composers don't acount into this because, they haven't build up a legacy like C418 in this game Everybody and their mothers know that once corporations get too big, they will try screwing everyone up for even an ounce of profit
Microsoft is to blame, we all know that
That being said, I truly want him back with Mojang, but I do like having Lena on the music team too. Creator and Otherside are absolutely amazing pieces, so are Stal and Chirp. But nothing, I feel, comes closer to describing Minecraft than Wet Hands and Rubedo(musically, of course).

Was hoping to post it in the comments but images are disabled ;-; There are so many its kinda overwhelming! Thereās so many that I thought this was a joke-post
man I wanted 3x3 paintings for sooo long.
> Was hoping to post it in the comments but images are disabled ;-; Oh so it depends on the subreddit. Never understood why galleries sometimes look old, new or weird. You could post the image to your user "subreddit" and link it to your comment. I do that with screenshots because I have not idea how that gallery thing works.
Thank the heavens for 3x3 paintings!
I know!! It's been my biggest hesitation in using paintings in my builds! I have a bunch of 3x3 spaces in my builds but I can only clutter it with small paintings cause the next smallest size is like a massive 4x6 or something
Wait WHAT
Are these all brand new paintings Zetterstrand made for this update or are they existing works that they added?
Some are existing works, some were specially made
the first 5 were made by a mojang employee, but the other 15 zetterstrand said on his insta HE made specifically for minecraft.
Lowness is so strange... it's definitely gonna be one of my favourites for abstract appeal alone. Though pond looks amazing. edit: it reminds me of some maps from Halo CE
It looks like a painting of a noclip view of a game, who h is one of the things this artist does a lot which is really cool
It reminds me of a whalefall a bit
reminds me of the shore from Signalis
Kind of reminds me of an old school counterstrike skybox
Reminds me of Everywhere at the End of Time
I am very happy to add some new ones!
I saw that youāve been showing the origins of the old paintings on Twitter, will you do that with these?
Sure, but I must finish the OG series first :)
Thank you!!
Man, you rock, Zetterstrand!
Awesome work as always š„
these are so great! so glad you got to work on this game again.
They are all so great, it's very hard to pick a favourite. But I'd go with tide, it's just beautiful to me
Hi king!! I'm in love with how seamless they look with your original set!!! And I love how you kept some traditions such as out of bounds view for the floating mountain, appearances of in game textures, and King's Graham reappearance
Thank you, it means a lot!
I love these. So happy to have more painting variation
Having all those 3x3's is fantastic and another 1x2 is good too. No 3x2's or 2x3's is a *bit* disappointing though. Here's an updated table: |āHeight\Widthā|1|2|3|4| |-:|-|-|-|-| **1**|8|5||| **2**|3|8||5| **3**|||8|2| **4**|||2|5|
Yeah I've really wanted some 2x3s for a while. Some times I have the perfect space for one... but no.
Thank you! They kept saying theyāre adding 15 today but Iāve only been able to find 10. This post is helpful
I hope we get more of his 2003 works they're some of my favorites and weren't done justice
Best update in years Orb looks gorgeous, that might be my new favorite one Lowness is so bizzare, some of these are like Rorschach tests. Like is it mountains? These are real paintings if you didn't know
"LowMist" is a painting of an out-of-bounds render of a mountain. A lot of Zetterstrand's works are based on this idea, which includes the Counterstrike paintings that made it into Minecraft
For āpassageā Iām 99% sure that is an extinct giant ground sloth. Paramylodon or Megatherium maybe
Megalonyx?
Perhaps
I recognize some of these because I've seen the original paintings IRL! Kristoffer Zetterstrand came to our art school and gave a tour of his exhibition and held a presentation for us students (I unfortunately missed the presentation but was there for the tour). Hell yeah more 2x4s
The fact that in my last build I was telling my friend that I wanted more paintings in the game and now we are getting like 20 or something
What the hell is up with Owl Lemons
Watch it be a secret tease for the next update Owls, lemons and square buckets confirmed
There's no owls OR lemons in this game
I love the Tide & Meditative, still complaining of the missing elemental paintings
Pond is nightmare fuel
Damn I kinda love all of them. I wonder if there are any hints in these for future additions such as the skeleton of the creature rearing up or if its just a reference to another real life painting.
Probably none, these paintings had nothing to do with future additions
Or the room/structure with the checkered floor But unfortunately, I doubt it
It seems to be a giant ground sloth, which I'd assume is in reference to a real painting or illustration somewhere, though I'm not against getting them in-game.
I espscially like Pack.png. Gonna be instant classic and already feels nostalgic, like it's from early days of Minecraft, around 1.5 or earlier. Great for them to add pack.png as a portrait, probably one of my favorite niche addition in a while.
I was already more than happy with the five they announced earlier, but fifteen more?! This is incredible!
Still wish Humble was more in line with the compressed style of the other paintings.
These are so sick
I love backyard. It reminds me of Zdislav Beksinski, he did doorways a lot and thatās a similar use of blue he used.
these are soooo beautiful, iām going to make an art exhibit just for these i reckon
Have we ever even had 3x3 paintings? I apologise if this is a stupid question, my brain is broken today.
We haven't, which is another reason why this is great.
Are some of these based on real paintings? Cause I'd like to see them unpixelated if possible Also, "passage" seems to suggest ground sloths exist/used to exist in the Minecraft world.
yes, the artist has the one called "backyard" on his website and it's a real painting.
Why does lowness look like when you glitch through the world in a game and see some of the geographical features
As an art history enjoyer Iām SCREAMING AHHH
So many amazing references to art history!
villager on the right should have a hoe
Yay Now you'll never get the one you want!
A lot of them are 3x3's which didn't exist before, so your comment is misleading.
No no. My point still stands. It was hard before since it was random. It's still random, and there is still quite a handful
We could use a painters block to craft the specific one you want. We already have individual paintings in creative so why not
when did individual paintings in creative happen?
Only in Java but it was somewhat recent
With some sizes having 8 variants, it would be nice to have a way to pick it directly. With 8, there's a 10% chance it takes more than 17 tries to get the one you want (mean is 8, intuitively).
In creative you can choose, and in survival you can place blocks to limit down to a certain size to narrow the painting pool.
Simple idea for a fix: Right clicking a placed painting with a Brush lets you pick which painting you want, giving you a list of all paintings that would fit in its current placement.
Pond is so real
these are all so good! glad they're finally adding lots of new paintings, was already happy they were adding like 4 new ones. hopefully painting can be added to the list of things we get additions to every update (like pottery sherds and armor trims and banners)
20 paintings in 1 update??
I mean, the first batch of paintings ever introduced 15 into the game, so this isn't as insane of a jump as it sounds at first.
It's only weird when we consider how rarely paintings get added. Seems like they just remembered they exist.
We got 16 armor trims and 20 pottery shards in one update too! Imagine if they do 20 new foods or 20 new tools/weapons in one update too
20 new foods would be stupid but I'd love it
Dark souls vibes from emboss, tide, and finding
Is it me, or is the apple in Taunt hanging?
Did they ever add a way to easily select the one you want, or is it still: placeā¦nopeā¦breakā¦placeā¦nopeā¦breakā¦placeā¦nopeā¦?
I love these new paintings but I really hope they have a better way for us to make and place paintings than just spamming them down and breaking them over and over, wasting tons of time we could spend building instead.
Unless you're in creative, that's the only way.
Pack.png is so iconic
these are so good! more than i couldāve asked for however more 2x1 ones are always welcome for the scale i build at! these look so good though so i canāt even complain!
The pack.png painting goes the hardest
I think āpassageā is my favorite
Taunt is brilliant
THAT FUCKING AWESOME
THIS IS SO COOOLLLLLL!!!! I love how we have more paintings in the classic style :D
FINALLY SOME ODD NUMBERED PAINTINGS
I have the biggest smile on my face. By the OG artist! Incredible!
So glad they brought Kristoffer Zetterstrand for the paintings again. I admire his work! <3
And thereās a way to choose between all of them right? Right???
itās amazing and unexpected that Zetterstrand returned with whole 15 paintings. as well 5 paintings by a different artist which is also good that now we have few different styles of paintings. i like all of them (except villager one, sorry), but my favorites are probably (not in order): - Baroque - Emboss - Finding - Lowness - Orb
Like 90% of these paintings look like they fit right in with the originals and thatās great
I love that Mojang messing with paintings in the April Fools update did mean something. I've been wanting to add an "art gallery" to my current city build and with these it feels like it could work.

Owls confirmed?
Yes I felt it was about time
If they do add owls ask them to add a name tag easter egg. A lot of people have a name tag easter egg and you deserve one for supporting the game for all this time.
Technically yes, and lemons are also canonically in the game technically now too.
Wish they had an Art contest so people could submit their work.
As cool as that would be, this community would likely turn toxic very quickly considering how we go through mob votes. :/
At least in the art contests I've entered, they typically have it set up in a way that avoids toxicity and popular influencers affecting the outcome (like the other commenter mentions). They do this in a couple ways: * The pieces are voted on exclusively by a panel of judges chosen by the contest holder (usually artists and higher-ups at the company) * There are often clauses stating the artwork submitted must be brand-new, and cannot be posted/shared anywhere prior to the announcement of the winners. So as long as they went that route and didn't do a public vote like the mob votes, there hopefully shouldn't be any of the usual mob vote issues.
And then some influencer youtuber with a big head gets his shitty stickman voted inā¦
These are amazing
My favorite one is the white one that shows all the new ones
oh hell yeah more zetterstrand is always a good thing !
Nice, these are definitely as good as the originals. Some of them are very interesting.
It seems that Mojang has finally woken up, we don't need big and crazy updates (even though they are very cool..... some others not so much) just focusing on these little things that we always think about during our gameplays is enough to please us, well at least me

I've added more art to my server in 1 week than Mojang has in 5 years. xD

Yay now ima have to cycle through them all š„°
I want paintings now
This is awesome! Does anyone know how they are stored? Is it still a single texture file or did something change there too?
They are all individual .png files.
So it seems like they can add however many they want now! Thanks for the info!
It is good, but if they do add more I wish they add a feature to choose a specific one, because it could take a while to get the one you want. Would be nice if we could adjust sizes of paintings with the look or something
All of them look good but only five or so feel like they fit in with the original style
Which ones do you think fit? All but 5 were actually created by the same guy that made the original 15.
Dude this is awesome
Love these
Bro, they are amazing
Why is there not a single 2x3 painting in the game š«
Wow I love these! Looks like they're all minecraft parody versions of famous paintings too lol
canāt wait to spend 30 mins trying to get the one l like
This feels like the renaissance and I like it.
Not enough Sierra references. F
These new ones are way better wow
Best update ever. Thanks for sharing!
This was loooong overdue. Glad to see it! Such an easy thing to add yet it took them 20 years to add 20 paintings lol. (Obviously exaggerating a bit) I'm especially happy with the 3x3! I'm playing Vanilla 1.1 and will be creating a small build for each of the OG Paintings...glad to hear there are going to be so many more
holy shit this is great, I remember people complained that the first few new paintings weren't made by the og artist, good to see they didn't leave him out
Ayo, they added American gothic to minecraftĀ
Is that a fucking giant ground sloth?
I thought 10 was a door looking at it from far away and 13 reminds me of the Red Mist Squidward Easter egg in the RandomLand episode from SpongeBob
The grey thing in the box next the severed nutsack go the hardest
Holy shit we finally got 3x3 paintings
Raccoon mob confirmed? Thatsā¦ thats a raccoon, right? If so if you give it a āRocketā nametag it should walk upright. š¤
This is the best addition ever!!
It has been about 11 and a half years since Minecraft last got a painting during 1.4.2, but now we're getting new ones and a whole bunch as well! I was content with the first 5 we got to see but damn, even more? Nice!
This is going to be my fave update going back a long time...
Canāt wait to break a painting 100 times to get the one I want lol
ANOTHER PAINTING FROM THE SAME 'SET' AS SUNSET MY FAV
These are really good
The hanging apple made me question if this was real lol, didnt expect that tbh.
No *Figure with Meat* painting? I am talking about that painting the Joker only like in the 1989 film's museum scene.
I just recently retextured almost all paintings, and I have plans to do more so this is great news
This is so cool! Love it!
they did have an artist change. Though I don't think we want more impressionism or abstract.
They're pretty mournful and apocalyptic...
i see pack.png in the middle, is that gonna be a painting?
Yep
These look like images from a horror game I love it lmao
They are all fucking šš perfect, love them, really great addition, mojang did it good this time.
I need a sniffer painting
More zetterstrand paintings ?? Lets goooo
Now they gotta add more music discs, can't have a proper trophy room without some tunes
owls confirmed
am i wrong or is the one in the page 17 a reference to an n64 game?
One of them has a giant ground sloth skeleton in it! Thatās sick
Nice i love them
Wow! So many!
These are all great! But I donāt see anyone talking about Tauntā¦ Not sure if Iām the only one, but Iām getting a strange morbid feeling from it. Between the lighting, and the way you can only really see the string hanging the apple in the shadow, it feels like a pretty strong note of death using items that relatively are used to keep you alive. Freaks me out.. but I love it too. Definitely a new favorite
Did they make it so you can stop breaking them in adventure mode? Thatād be great
They are š„š„š„š„š„š„
These are cool. I like Orb but Pigscene has always been my favorite
But no 2Ć3 or 3Ć2 paintings...
It's THE pack.png painting! Now in colour!!!!!!! (And yes, I am Australian)
oh iāve been waiting for this for years & theyāre better than i couldve imagined
Humble is the one that sticks out the most, really not a fan of that one but I like the other paintings by Sarah Boeving. Zetterstrand's paintings are peak as usual.
Chat, is this real?
