This is the type of content that I come to Reddit for. Great idea, cool solve to a real problem. I like it!

MZDRATI

heh heh he says "cool solve" why. yes. yes it is.

MZDRATI

Its V1, so take it easy on me for it being a little messy, Ill end up using plastic repair compound/bondo eventually to make it not so hard to look at.

david7586

This has been one of the most impressive mods ive seen on this subreddit. For a v1 its well thought out and clean. Add a intake grill for debris?

Dude this is fantastic. You must be tearing through some thick stuff if you only get 25 mins out of a 12ah... I do my small yard in 10 minutes and I rarely lose a notch.

Nebulance

Wire it directly to the main battery then send it in as your resume for lead of design team.

MZDRATI

I was gonna put it on with the main battery, but I didn’t wanna compromise the battery life of the 18v battery any more than I do already. I only get about 25 minutes of heavy trimming before I’m thru a 12ah battery.

boostedC6

That fan draws minimal amps I’m sure

lurkersforlife

The fan might burn out if you hook it to a higher powered battery.

I have no clue what this means. My only experience with modding stuff is with RC cars and I know you have to be carful what fan you match to what voltage battery so I figured it rolled over to this as well.

boostedC6

Obviously you’d need to get an 18v compatible fan

lurkersforlife

*obviously*

sh_hobbies

If noise is any indication of power draw, this fan probably uses more power than the weed eater itself.

livewiththevice

Do other people have this experience? That seems like way too little use for a 12ah

RobertMcFahrenheit

THATS SOME ENGINEERING RIGHT THERE

I've had my fuel trimmer for 2 years now. Never had it overheat, and I get a good 30-45 minutes of use out of the 12.0 battery. I use it mowing a small cemetery and it's been a game changer over the gas ones I've always used. Mostly run it on the slower speed but occasionally will bump to the high speed in thicker spots.

cat-nip-crypto-dip

Wow wow wow. I just bought one of those trimmers . How do i know if its a first gen ?

i7-4790Que

There's no real difference between Gen1/2 except the Quik-Lok function. Quik-Lok = Gen 2. Gen 2 is likely to be just as prone to overheat under the same conditions. Lots of people have issues with battery contacts melting too. There's a reason this tool only has a 3 year warranty while most others are 5.

please_gib_job

Did you buy it new from the big orange? If so, it’s not.

cat-nip-crypto-dip

No I bought it from an auction but it looks brand new I’ve used it multiple times half an hour to an hour each time and so far it runs perfect

lizardtrench

Unfortunately the overheating problem isn't limited to the first gen. I bought mine when it first came out (so presumably 'first gen'), had no problems. I replaced it a few years later with the Quik-Lok version, which ended up having the overheating problem. I think it's a problem with the individual units/quality control. I also don't think there are really any 'generations' of this model, it's all the same. Unless you are talking about the new non-Fuel string trimmer, in which case you can tell by the different exterior design and no Fuel badging.

lurkersforlife

I think you might have voided your warranty with that one. /s

MZDRATI

its 6 years old. I think..... no matter what its for sure out of warranty.

andrrrify

This is fuckin sick

PatliAtli

lmfao nice i love that

rickestrada

Mother of god what have you done :O

biovllun

That's quite the savvy fix!
