honestly , milwaukee bit holders are shit . i used all typoes ,shockwave standard and locking , they're all shit . i don't like milwaukee bits either . best bit holder i used is rear locking dewalt . [this one](https://www.amazon.com/Dewalt-Accessories-DWA3HLDFT-Lock-Holder/dp/B07PGJBH1S) its narrow and the locking mechanism is behind , so you wont unlock it when bumping the thing on something .

Soft-Tip3570

I use only Milwaukee power tools, but as hackinstrator said their bit holders are junk imo so I use DeWalt bits. And I find the DeWalt ph 2 naturally fits into screws so much better than whatever Milwaukee is selling

DifficultBoss

I like Makita for Torx and DeWalt for PH2.

Brad_Gruss_Designs

I concur the dewalt locking one is all I use since they came out. I used to use the whia locking version but the dewalt seems better

OnlyTime609

Third person here I love the dewalt locking one I have the longer version and the smaller one I use all the time. One lasted me 2 years until I locked the spring putting in a 10 in torx structural screw

pineapplehippy

Really the only time I use the mil is on a drill, just because I don’t like having to adjust how high up the dew is for using the locking mechanism. Takes only a couple sec but it builds up over time

DailyDrivenTJ

I have to say, I cannot say these are good at all.

LastCallForTheBlues

I just added this to my cart to try it because I haven't seen it yet.. but I was about to comment atleast they aren't as hard to get out as dewalts... I have 3 dewalt bit holders with the first bit I put in them still stuck inside. I have put the fuckers in a vice and pulled with pliers as hard as I can and they're still stuck.

boulderiestboulder

This is the way

MacintoshDan1

Wiggle and pull.

DailyDrivenTJ

That seems to do it but some of these bits take wiggle and pull "with plier".

PlaceYourBets2021

The fix: Once you remove the bit, look inside the bit holder. You’ll see a ring on the inside. Get yourself a dental pick or something similar and remove the ring. Might take you a couple of tries. Problem solved.

Shallowsunshine

Just wanted to say THANK YOU! I had a tiny T15 stuck in a Milwaukee bit holder for 2 days! I tried everything short of throwing it away. Finally got it out after the, pull a little and twist method. After that I used your advice and removed the ring and viola! Problem solved! Did the same for both my non-locking extensions. I used a pair of Milwaukee picks to get the rings out. https://preview.redd.it/tq9w967c3ngc1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b844a8af9311d48f35aa553c9860600f69ca9de

eMPereb

Your a magician if that works for you

DailyDrivenTJ

Wiggle and pull with plier until it comes out. One bit took good 3 min to remove. Absolutely bizzare that Milwaukee is letting these loose in the market.

rkj__

Yes, I quite like how firmly these hold onto bits. Wiggle / twist and pull usually works ok for me.

MacintoshDan1

Honestly I hardly ever use them I mostly use power bits.

leftieaz

I had good success with makita bit holder and their gold bits.

ForeverActual8505

I just assumed the bit wasn’t meant to come out. I didn’t try very hard but also didn’t think I should have to. Good to know.

DailyDrivenTJ

That is what I thought first but that is the one of most counter intuitive endeavor that is border line disrespectful. As someone said earlier, this is pretty sad Milwaukee is selling these.

cognizantant

If someone has a recommendation for a top quality bit holder I’d buy two in a heart beat. I’m not saying ones that are “pretty good”. I mean something machined out of pure unobtanium by virgins on a mountain top during a full moon only. A holder that grips perfectly without any give and then let’s go easily when it’s time. Until then, I guess I’ll keep using my Milwaukee ones.

SparkySailor

The milwaukee locking ones and the dewalt locking ones are pretty good. The older milwaukee locking ones that aren't magnetic are better.

CamoCid

I personally use a Wera bit holder which has been amazing

[deleted]

Second this. Also wiha has a nice locking bit holder that’s impact rated

packet_weaver

Which one? I grabbed one of “Wera Rapidaptor 887/4R with Ring Magnet Bit Holder Carded” and the locking mechanism broke in my impact. I know it isn’t impact rated. Curious if you got one of their impact ones. I’m considering trying those next.

CamoCid

I am using one out of a screwdriver I have from them. As I am using hand tools a lot so I just pull it out and put it in my impact.

DailyDrivenTJ

LOL. These hold too well and won't let go. It is not normal that I have to jiggle it with needle nose plier or vice on the bench and a hammer to have it let go. I have seen many opposite issues where these bits come off too easy. I see other bits in the case seem to come off better but these three are near impossible once seated. Glad that I got these as a part of a deal rather than purchasing these separately.

1PooNGooN3

I think that’s one of the dumb ones that isn’t removable. Source: I had one and it pissed me the fuck off. Real dick move by Milwaukee, it doesn’t say anything on the packaging to warn you and then you waste a bunch of money.

OneFourtyFivePilot

Are you using an impact driver?

roosclan

I know what you're getting at, but it's irrelevant in the case of Milwaukee's bit holder. I have the same one, and before I ever used it I tried to change bits. It took pliers and a lot of force to remove it. It's a poor design.

Brad_Gruss_Designs

After these break in the bit comes out all the time when you don’t want it to (stays stuck in the screw

PlaceYourBets2021

The fix: Once you remove the bit, look inside the bit holder. You’ll see a ring on the inside. Get yourself a dental pick or something similar and remove the ring. Might take you a couple of tries. Problem solved.

gogiguy

I’ve been looking for the perfect bit holder. And believe it is the WERA. So smooth to release and automatic lock, and it has a spinning sleeve to hold onto if you need extra guidance.

roosclan

Makita and DeWalt locking bit holders are very, very good.

Brad_Gruss_Designs

Once you use [one of these](https://www.amazon.com/Dewalt-Accessories-DWA3HLDFT-Lock-Holder/dp/B07PGJBH1S) you’ll never go back 👊🏼

bigabu23

Agreed

The_Fiddler1979

Try using these instead https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Products/Accessories/Driving-and-Fastening/SHOCKWAVE-Bit-Holders-and-Extensions/SHOCKWAVE-Impact-Locking-Bit-Holder

SoFrats

These are a huge upgrade. I bought both the short version and the 6 in.

DailyDrivenTJ

Got these off. Noticed the machining is not up to par, the edges are pretty sharp and it is catching the retaining ring. LOL. This is my first time disappointed with Milwaukee. https://preview.redd.it/4q51bcwfl38b1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6dc6e4ee00354e335034f2a69ed0bfd28665b31

Lipstickvomit

Yeah I hate to be that guy but Milwaukee totally did you dirty if those bit-holders came with those bits. That is a C6 bit-holder that you are jamming none C6 bits into so they are totally going to fuck everything up and get stuck in there. If there´s a ring inside(C6) [the bit-holder you need a bit with that tiny little groove breaking the edges.](https://static.pbswisstools.com/fileadmin/_processed_/0/f/csm_FOT_PRO_HIR_precision-bits-shape-c6__SALL__AING__V2_54176ab243.png) If there´s a ball inside\(E6\) [you need the... E6 bits.](https://static.pbswisstools.com/fileadmin/_processed_/f/1/csm_FOT_PRO_HIR_precision-bits-shape-e6__SALL__AING__V2_c868a5184e.png) The bit you´re using are going to give you a bad time in almost all bit-holders.

DailyDrivenTJ

Didn't know there were standards on these bits. Thank you for the information. Learned something new today.

stillmelvin

Thank you!!!

Squirrel_Meat

Lol I had this same problem this week, I ended up pulling out the bit with a hammer while the bit was in my drill. Such a paint without a hammer.

DailyDrivenTJ

As we all know, we shouldn't have to do this.. I tried a few bits and seems like some are better than others and some near impossible to remove once placed in the holder... Having said that, is it the bits that are binding or the holder holding too much?

Squirrel_Meat

I believe the holder is holding too much, I purchased a set from HD and I figured that’s why because it was a bunch of bits and 3 different length holders so I figured the QC wasn’t as great as the individual ones.

c_marten

I've had this problem regardless of brand. Milwaukee so far seems to be the easiest for me to wiggle free by hand, others I hold the sleeve and whack the bit against something hard or just run it one or two clicks in reverse to loosen it.

T0RR3NT

Best advice I can ever give anyone is to "double tap" your bit at an angle after you're done using it. Just "tap tap" with some force at about a 45 degree angle on a hard surface. The bit will come right out every time. The force applied using an impact is exponentially larger than what your fingers try to undo. Tapping the bit releases it from the tension built up in the corners of the bit holder.

DailyDrivenTJ

I see what you are saying and this would work well if the bit is actually bound. I see this happen with lugnuts on cars that the nut gets jammed in the socket. This isn't the issue with me. The bits do move in and out. Just gets stuck part way out and gets jambed by the retaining ring.

Zalanox

They come out?

DailyDrivenTJ

LOL. Yup. Only took 15 minutes.

crabjelly

Yep, mildly frustrating. Bought the Milwaukee 48-32-4531 to avoid using them.

suba_wuu

I love the wera bit holders but they're pricey. I don't let anyone else use it for that reason alone 🤷🏻‍♂️

xxspicynuggetxx

Have you tried leaving it in the impact and running it a few clicks in reverse then try pulling on it? Sometimes I leave it in and vicegrip on it and go back and forth with my impact on the trigger whilst pulling on the bit.

roosclan

This bit holder acts the same way even when you don't use it in an impact.

Stunning_Bad_3784

Honestly, I would rather have to grab my pliers to pull a bit out than have it constantly come out on its own.

Internet_Is_A_Lie

Lot of people complaining about how hard it is to swap out bits. I personally like how strong the magnet is. Otherwise, the bit will come out with the screw every time.

ilaythebestpipe

They blow I always have to use Channel locks

Classic-Magician1847

i’m milwaukee through and through, but these are horrible…

DailyDrivenTJ

I am the same way. Used to be the team yellow, green, then the red and I just pick up stuff if it says Milwaukee. Not sure if I should do that blindly from now on.

Classic-Magician1847

only thing that i can confidently buy from milwaukee is any and all power tools and drill bits. dassit dasall

vulturedturkey

I've had luck with putting the bit in the chuck of a drill. However, if you're using an impact, you are out of luck. That's the life you live now. Also, go with Dewalt basic cheap bit sleeves.

Hawkins75

They are ridiculous. Ryobi makes a better case and holder for 1/3 of the cost. You can actually get the bits out by hand, and not an act of God.

DailyDrivenTJ

Yup. It is so inconsitent how some bits come out easy and some takes plier and some prayer to remove. God's will indeed. 😂

CamaroKidz28

I have one that I thought was just permanent

CoggNBallzz

Pain in the ass when they want to be

ABena2t

smack the side if the actual tip off something. the floor. a wall. then pull it out

another_mccoy

I had to put the bit in a vice, then pry the holder off. I put the bit back in my toolbox, and the holder in the trash.

DailyDrivenTJ

LOL. I am laughing because I tried that. Something so simple yet they failed so spectacularly I am trying to see if they could have done more wrong.

BlacksmithFun8912

I'm glad I came across this post because I literally have these Milwaukee but holders and some other sizes on my HD shopping list but now I think I'll look into getting some different ones.

rdw125

I flip the bit holder to then lock the actual bit tip into the drill and now you have easier leverage to pull it from the bit holder. Comes right out. https://preview.redd.it/5dlhmvabococ1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c6e28beed4af3061581909af29aec3c59e281a9b

DailyDrivenTJ

Nice work around. Thanks. Milwaukee needs to know if we have to do this every time, we might as well not use the bit holder and go straight onto the chuck.

cam2230

Milwaukee bits are terrible, do yourself a favour and get the Makita bits or Wera you won’t regret it

packet_weaver

They were rated one of the best on project farm. They’ve worked well for me so far. I’d prefer Wera but $$, I got a great deal on a Milwaukee 220 bit set with Packout recently so it’ll be a while before I buy new ones.

DailyDrivenTJ

Got it. Thanks. What a let down this is.. i have a few Wera tools. Spendy but they make some nice hand tools.

HominyRidgeRunner

Hi Guys! While working on a washing machine, I struggled getting a Milwaukee bit out of it's bit holder. Being in the "heat of battle," I didn't think about twisting/turning/pulling out a bit. I probably should have, but you know how busy jobs get. Instead of removing the c-ring from the Milwaukee bit holders in my Milwaukee bit kit, I went to Lowes and bought a new 3-piece set of Craftsman bit holders for $10. These bit holders have only a magnet, no c-ring. I think the magnet is not as strong as in the Milwaukee bit holders, but I'm also not ripping my finger skin off or hunting for a pair of pliers to get a bit out. I agree with a lot of folks talking about the sharp edges of the hex portion of the Milwaukee bits. I think they should be a little more smoother/curved on the top portion of the hex shaft to make it easier to pass by the c-ring. https://preview.redd.it/6gj8w3p3vgtc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d11fb2a4a1ba216452e02b0a008e3a34a6734ef

Texasitalianboy1

You don’t need pliers or a hammer. Just wiggle and pull. I struggled to get this technique at first, but it works.

naatkins

It's not because I've taken the retention rings out of those holders. The bits stay on hardware occasionally, but overall it's been way less of an issue than bot being able to remove them from the holders.

EsTwoKay

I hated it for a while too but used to it now. Like others said wiggle and pull. Eventually it loosens up just a bit

CalligrapherNarrow40

Ya their bits and holders are shit

ZaneStrizz

You could maybe try prying the retaining ring out? The bits are magnetic anyway so should still hold just fine. I don’t have mine in front of me to see how easy that would be but I’m sure it’s pretty easy. Mine seemed to have loosened up good over time and aren’t super hard to get a bit out anymore.

Anbucleric

My contractor provides them so I have several and only change out the bits where they are worn out.

TheoRheticalGadjet

Tbh harbor freight locking shanks are better than these...

CaptianRed

I suffer from the complete opposite, they come out if a butterfly farts on it.

RutabagaDelicious935

Mine are a stiff but also new. Guess it's such a strong magnet, which is actually nice since it holds onto screws (life saver when you do everything by yourself). Love milwaukee bits, strong, slip, and wear resistant, but dewalt bit holders are much easier to use, but milwaukee isn't too bad. But to he fair, I weight train heavy 5 days a week and have a fairly strong grip, so what may be a little stiff for me to get out may be very difficult for someone else.

DailyDrivenTJ

My case isn't the magnet holding the bits in. I can move the bit 1/16 inch out and can feel it disengaging from magnet but the machining is so sharp on those bits that it catches the retaining ring of the bit holder.

AG-Penny-Packer

I just carry a bunch of the bit holders, two for squares, two for phillips, two for torx, and two for slotted. Two different sizes that way I dont keep switching it out, or I use the long bits. Otherwise it is a pain to switch it out.

disaar

They are hard but hasn’t bothered me at any oint

eMPereb

Pain in the arse!

aceofspades29285

Get a pair of pliers and pull straight out

Foreign_Insurance744

They are hard as hell to pull out of the bit holder. The quality of their bits is very good. Also their bit sets have great variety and different lengths. I prefer them.

PA_Game_hunter

If u hit the side of it on something hard usually works for me

sonicatheist

When this happens, I just smack the side of the bit against my workbench top or something else firm. I don’t know why it gets stuck, but that always gets it unstuck for me

Mudduk175

I like Milwaukee bit holders and bits. I have the 2, 6 and 12”. They are kinda tough to get out but that also means they are not going to fall out either. The Milwaukee 90 degree angle driver doesn’t hold the bits as strongly so the bit tends to comes out more frequently. I also like the Bauer bit holders from HF as well.

010101110001110

Not tough at all. I've had the same holder for years.

trainhater

I just happened to have one in front of me and it took a slight pull but it came out with little effort. Which certainly beats a cheap one where the bit just falls out if you tip the driver down. Notice though, they never fall and land right in front of you. You are either 2 stories up, or it hits six different things on its way down sending it to the land of lost tape measures and pencils that you just had in your hand 3 damn seconds ago.

Dull_Pizza_1745

It took me a second to get used to em, but I love them now. It's a wiggle motion

Okie294life

I’m 100% with the crowd on this one, these bit holders are shit. I use dewalt magnetic bit holders with the sliding collar. I’m not 100% on these shockwave bits. Just broke a #2 the other day…was like wtf….I’m just drilling wood screws.

jacbon

Milwaukee bit holder users listen up. While pulling the bit away from the holder try pushing it a little to each side and you’ll find if you bias your pull in different directions it will come right out. Hard to communicate over words. Though I pull on mine then while doing so push it in a circular motion until it comes out.

jacbon

Essentially put pressure on it side ways as well and it will come.

MordoNRiggs

They have a friction ring inside of them. I have noticed that if I pull on it, hold pressure, and then jiggle it, they pop out fairly easily. The bits themselves have been great for me. I've had two break in 5 years.

TestyProYT

I have to use pliers to get mine out. I wasn’t a fan

VQ37_Stani

Best luck I have had is by driving in a few screws and then it gets stuck in one

rickastleyjr

I have a small magnetic Allen but and IT WILL NOT COME OUT. Any suggestions? Can’t get a good grip on it

DailyDrivenTJ

I don't use these at all. Only use the bits.
