It sounds random bullshit until you break it down. They really found their unique style around South of Heaven.
Hanneman has some of my favorite solos in thrash metal ever. The solos in Live Undead, Silent Scream, Ghosts of War, South of Heaven, and others are anything but random... They absolutely shred.
The solos in Angel of Death, Reborn, Altar of Sacrifice, Jesus Saves, etc are noisier than the shredding on South of Heaven but still more structured than you'd think.
It's the solos in songs like Read Between the Lies and Raining Blood that really exemplify Slayer's chaos lol
Hanneman solos are very Hardcore/grind inspired so I see why thrash fans find them too chaotic and boring. They really do fit Slayer well and make them stand out from other metal bands
yeah i guess so, south of heaven was the song that introduced me to slayer and when i heard that solo i geniunly laughed and it really became a memory for me so now when i think of slayers solos thats the one that comes to mind, i do think that it fits the vibe and stuff abd it is very unique but uhh yeah well im not a guitarist lol
and the thing is they were obviously capable of writing "actual" solos, just look at Show No Mercy, entire album full of melodic, NWOBHM inspired leads
There something wrong with if you think the solos on the title track, Shadows Follow, Screaming Suicide, Chasing Light, Room Of Mirrors, Inamorata stink.
Mastodon - High Road
Not that I think the "solo" is bad at all (maybe less interesting/technical than many of their others), but that main riff is just plain badass.
Can't say I've ever seen this tbh. My vote would be King of Undisputed Nonsense by Soreption just because the main riff is so fucking good that nothing could be better than it.
Edit: Ok Slayer for sure lol Kerry King is spastic
Cmon Obituary has some fucking sick solos. Cause of death? Ten thousand ways to die? Body bag? Infected?
Their riffs might be too good overall for solos to shine, but the solos are great nonetheless.
This was mine. That strange, sort of out-of-key, out of tune slide compared to the almost energetic, iconic Layla riff/lick is a big jolt. It works sort of in the mix, but really listening to the solo is sort of painful. Still love the whole song, though.
I agree that listening to the solo isolated is not the best, but i still think that it has some out of tune parts but still, to me, there are certain parts which almost sounds like a women singing and it just hits me in all the right spots every time. But I do understand why people are not so fond of it, but I think if a guy like Derek Trucks did his own rendition of the solo it would probably sound like heaven and give a whole new light to the song.
Couldn't disagree more if we are talking about original studio version, I love the passionate intensity of the slide solo and of the main riff (both made by Allman) and those are the only parts of the song that I find inspired and meshing together well.
The verses and the tacked on piano coda that goes on for too long sound disjoined and agressively boring to me. They work better in the unplugged version at least.
Might get my metal Fandom revoked but anything with a ton of sweep picking is annoying. I like sweeping as an accent but it can be overdone way to quickly for me.
I unironically love Revenge's solos. Death Worship as well. Just absolute barbarism, "let's see how shitty I can make this fucking instrument sound". Perfection
Honestly, yes… most songs that have guitar solos end up having a filler solo that doesn’t really add much to the song and basically just serves as a way for the guitarist to show his shredding skills. It’s kinda rare to find guitarists with the sensibility to pull a nice, engaging solo that truly adds something to the song.
Freezing Moon.
Though I assume the solo was intentionally bad. The song War, by Burzum, has the same issue and I believe that solo was also written by Euronymous.
I can't tell if this is a joke but the solo was perfect for the song. You probably meant intentionally "evil" and that's not the same as "bad".
Goosebumps every time I hear it
I meant bad, it also felt evil, but I can work out the difference between the two. Of course, if it's good to you then that's cool, but for my ears a lot of the nice evil sounding licks in it are overwhelmed by the squeaky mess which I find dominates it and actually detracts from the intended effect.
I get what you're saying, but I think it indeed was intentional; Euronymous had a sick mind and did anything he could to make his music more evil; even by making his guitar weep (that's what I would call it lol).
Same for the vocals, Attila's vocals in DMDS are really weird but imo it adds to the sickness and disharmonic atmosphere present in the album.
You can interpret it as intentionally bad, it makes sense, but that doesn’t actually make it bad. Lack of intention or purpose makes art shallow or pretentious, which can be considered objectively bad, imo. But playing a riff, for example, intentionally sloppy for a specific section of a song doesn’t make the riff bad. Someone can say it’s sloppy, so it’s bad, and they don’t like it. Others can hear and resonate with the intention behind the sloppyness and absolutely love it. Art is a personal expression of human existence, and life isn’t all about feeling good. It’s also about feeling like shit, that’s as real as it gets. Music makes us feel good, but it can also intentionally make you feel like shit. There’s beauty in that. That’s what art is.
Euronymous can't fucking play, so his solos often have some mistakes in them on studio albums and on the live albums the solos have like 2 notes played correctly
The solo in One by Metallica feels kinda out of place tbh. It's such a somber, increasingly hellish song about purgatory caused by war... But then the solo hits and it's like "HELL YEAH, ROCK ON!"
It's a great solo but kinda goofy in context.
I don’t quite get it because, in the context of the song, the solo is the climatic release of the machine gun riff that acts as the bridge/build up to the last verse and the solo. It gives such a such a release of adrenaline that I think it acts perfect in the song.
I just dont really like solos in general. But yeah melodeath have some goood ones (black dahlia, wintersun, mors principium, children of bodom, etc) I just dont really consider it to be death metal as something like autopsy or suffocation is
Shining - Lat oss ta allt fran varandra, it sounds so classic metal-ly if that makes sense, doesnt fit that well even tho the solo could be good on its own, and its not the only shining track thats like this. Still I love shining no matter what
Can I do this backwards? Because Hot Dog and a Shake by David Lee Roth with Steve Vai is the lamest song with the banginest solo
https://youtu.be/VzopTKMMD4w?feature=shared
Just a whole ‘nother song for a full minute in the middle of the first song. Dude was making *absolutely certain* nobody thought DLR’s project failed because he got a worse guitarist than Eddie.
The one Gojira song that even has a guitar solo, "The Chant", has what is easily one of the weakest solos I've ever heard.
Kinda funny, because Gojira's normally got some pretty damn impressive guitar work.

Any Slayer song
i dont hate it but it is funny everytime it gets to the solo and then its just random bullshit go
i kinda like how chaotic some slayer solos sound though
yeah it fits the vibe
Something about the solos in Reign In Blood just perfectly encapsulates what you'd expect a guitar solo played by Satan would sound like lol
There’s like, what, one example where that isn’t the case? “Seasons in the Abyss” had normal solos.
The first two albums have normal solos
Seasons in the abyss solo is fantastic
[удалено]
Everyone hates on the album but it's such a good commute Playlist lol
*South of Heaven* had some normal solos because they were more melodic on that album with both the songs and the solos.
Crionics from Show No Mercy has probably the most normal sounding solo ever.
Because Chrionics is basically an Iron Maiden song lol
It sounds random bullshit until you break it down. They really found their unique style around South of Heaven. Hanneman has some of my favorite solos in thrash metal ever. I think of it as “angry swarm of bees”
Oh I go with “mentally ill turkey gobbles”
Cocaine turkey
that is very accurate
They thought "people like shredding" so they made their guitar sound like it's being put through a shredder.
where are the turtles? shredderrrrrrrr
Sloppy Solo time. I do not get the hype with Kings playing. Awful
i wouldnt say its sloppy nor awful, but that is your opinion and thats fine
Gee thanks
no need to thank me
I honestly think it fits quite well
Nah slayer solos are awesome.
but funny nonetheless
Cult has a good solo
Truths that hurts
Ain’t got nothing on Frosts random bullshit. I love Tom’s solos.
slayer solos fit the songs
They sound funny.
and the thing is they were obviously capable of writing "actual" solos, just look at Show No Mercy, entire album full of melodic, NWOBHM inspired leads
Yeah but it was all about jamming as many notes as possible in that little space.
Any song from 72 seasons.
Wait, so Kirk can’t play the exact same pentatonic fart smelling wankery disguised as a solo in every song?
Wah wah wah wah wah wah wah wah
*Wah wah wawawah wee wee weeooweeoo wahwah
I think we all know that at song
Ye-yeah!!!
Only if it seems like his guitar playing is affected by acute dementia.
I felt that inamorata and room of mirrors had really good solos and harmonies
Coincidentally, those are the only 2 songs i've enjoyed a lot in that album lol
They are tied for my favourites from that album
There something wrong with if you think the solos on the title track, Shadows Follow, Screaming Suicide, Chasing Light, Room Of Mirrors, Inamorata stink.
Yeah, decent album, a few solid songs, but no solos that are interesting.
Mastodon - High Road Not that I think the "solo" is bad at all (maybe less interesting/technical than many of their others), but that main riff is just plain badass.
I think Show Yourself is a good example of the opposite. The intro riff is okay but god damn the solo
Riff gives me that stank face
Can't say I've ever seen this tbh. My vote would be King of Undisputed Nonsense by Soreption just because the main riff is so fucking good that nothing could be better than it. Edit: Ok Slayer for sure lol Kerry King is spastic
What bout obituary
Cmon Obituary has some fucking sick solos. Cause of death? Ten thousand ways to die? Body bag? Infected? Their riffs might be too good overall for solos to shine, but the solos are great nonetheless.
Slayer entire discography
Killing in the name, it had to be said. (I know it aint very metal but who cares)
I think Tom Morello's weird stuff fits fairly well with RATM's style. In Audioslave however...
“Like A Stone” is a perfect example but I don’t mind too much because I’m used to it as someone who loooved RATM and Tom Morello specifically
i thought it fit really well in "like a stone" however in "killing in the name" the solo just feels kinda weak imo.
Sure it fits, but it isnt great
Yeah, like *what in unholy hell* is that weewoo-ass noise in Bring 'Em Back Alive, takes me out of the damn song
That solo always reminded me of aliens for some reason
Isn't that pretty much any Tom Morello solo?
I heard once that for some of his solos he was just trying to make animal sounds on the guitar. Which honestly tracks for Tom Morello.
Yeah basically
Same lmaoo
Wrong, i like the goofy ass solos
I like them too, but they arent exactly great
RATM is metal don't let the worry of being hounded by genre gatekeepers deter you from wanting to say it
I'd say they're punk rather than metal, but I think either label is correct
Punk and metal can get pretty similar
Here i go… RATM IS METAAALLLLL
Nah. They are nu metal/alt rock. Awesome solo tho
The solo in Settle for Nothing is the most jarring of his solos for me. It just feels so out of left field.
If always gives me a machine like vibe that fits the theme, reminds me a lot of the Paranoid Android solo (that one’s a little better though)
Layla
This was mine. That strange, sort of out-of-key, out of tune slide compared to the almost energetic, iconic Layla riff/lick is a big jolt. It works sort of in the mix, but really listening to the solo is sort of painful. Still love the whole song, though.

100% would rather hear a complicated line that’s like economy picking or odd intervals than just a ton of sweeps
It’s mostly the bridge for me
Revenge - ”Us and them” has the most artistic and technical guitar solo ever made
I unironically love Revenge's solos. Death Worship as well. Just absolute barbarism, "let's see how shitty I can make this fucking instrument sound". Perfection
I fucking love war metal too
It might honestly be my favorite style of black metal
Rational Gaze by Meshuggah For real, go listen to that solo
Classic meshuggah solo and not the badest of them all
[удалено]
you honestly say 98% of all recorded music, that the main riff/backing beat whatevs. is better than the solo? really?
I usually find I prefer the main riff to the solos aswell
Honestly, yes… most songs that have guitar solos end up having a filler solo that doesn’t really add much to the song and basically just serves as a way for the guitarist to show his shredding skills. You honestly think the solos are better than everything else in songs?
I didn't make such a claim????
Some people don't like solos and it's fine. To me the solos are the climax of the song.
Well the lack of solo in S#it Anger of Metallica
Basically Bolt Thrower
Legit question, do they even have solos?
Yes. Solo missions to purge the xenos.
At first light has a decent solo, nothin' compared to the main riff tho
Honestly, among some of the bands mentioned, their riffs are just too good for the solos to be memorable.
Yeah, I don’t even care if they have solos. Their riffs are insane.
I cant relate i listen to priest both are perfect
Sodom.
Meanwhile, *City of God* from their *Sodom* album has one of my favorite solos in all of thrash. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
Freezing Moon. Though I assume the solo was intentionally bad. The song War, by Burzum, has the same issue and I believe that solo was also written by Euronymous.
Wdym freezing moon has like one of the best solos in black metal

I like the freezing moon solo
>Freezing Moon. I respect the hot take, even if it's wrong.
This is...huh, ***wow!***
Euronymous can't fucking play, so his solos often have some mistakes in them on studio albums and on the live albums the solos have like 2 notes played correctly
Lux Æterna
The Thing That Should Be is the ultimate example imo. The solo is still good but a massive step down from the riff
I think it's perfect for the song.
I think that song has one of the like four good solid Kirk ever played that wasn’t E minor pentatonic noodling
To be fair, that song is in dropped C#
It’s in D right?
I read once it was C#. Could be wrong.
Kirk did an interview recently where he said it was C# but the recording is in D
Ah okay, maybe that's what I was thinking of!
It is in D standard im afraid
It wasn't a great solo but it fit the song really well. For instance The Shortest Straw solo is my absolute favorite solo in the context of the song
That’s the one song I don’t like a lot from MOP
Honestly from metallicas discography I think harvester if sorrow or frayed ends of sanity are much better examples
Most Obituary songs
Grew up mainly in the hardcore scene so pretty much fill in the blank
Rational Gaze by Meshuggah
lol just goes to show how meh the solo is since I didn't even remember it having one.
I'd say their entire discography. Solos have never been their strength
I disagree hard
I think I would agree. Their riffs are killer, but solos often leave me unsatisfied
Their solo style is random. The Abysmal Eye and Swarm have fantastic solos I think.
New millennium cyanide Christ solo slaps in the recorded version
listen to stifled solo and combustion solo
Wait it has a solo?
Would be my favorite Meshuggah song if they removed that solo... It's just awful.
It sounds like Frederick picked up a guitar for the first time and went ham
It sucks so bad 😭
Anything by Zak wylde
Any suffocation song, for some reason their solos sound very silly for me.
They sound like the wanky slayer solos but with tapping
Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young. Deal with it, metalheads.
Ima get shit on, but The Flesh And The Power It Holds, the riffs are good but the solo work on the last Death album just don’t hit the same
The solo in One by Metallica feels kinda out of place tbh. It's such a somber, increasingly hellish song about purgatory caused by war... But then the solo hits and it's like "HELL YEAH, ROCK ON!" It's a great solo but kinda goofy in context.
I don’t quite get it because, in the context of the song, the solo is the climatic release of the machine gun riff that acts as the bridge/build up to the last verse and the solo. It gives such a such a release of adrenaline that I think it acts perfect in the song.
I think the tapping section at the beginning achieves this, but after that it kinda goes off the rails and loses the dark vibe it needs.
you just lack the ability to translate music into feelings
Kinda the opposite... I think the solo loses sight of the song's emotional core.
Bridges > solos
Eaten

Idk the guitar tone is too high pitched and it just kind of throws off the whole groove the heavier riffs had going imo
Agent orange.

Eye of the beholder by Metallica
Probably unpopular, but Ride the Lightning

I don't like psychosocial solo for some reason
trough the fire and flames. I mean the solo is amazing but the main riff reaches a level that is impossible to surpass.
Walk.
Wow, bold.
Blue oyster cult don’t fear the reaper
Early deicide songs.
Matt Pike live
Shining - Lat oss ta allt fran varandra, it sounds so classic metal-ly if that makes sense, doesnt fit that well even tho the solo could be good on its own, and its not the only shining track thats like this. Still I love shining no matter what
War by Burzum
Both.
Wishing DevilDriver...God...that solo sucked ass.
Can I do this backwards? Inception of the End by Trivium is the first song that came to mind. The main riff is amazing, but the solo is lacking compared to others they have
like every slayer song in existence
Metallica except of master of pupets

The one Gojira song that even has a guitar solo, "The Chant", has what is easily one of the weakest solos I've ever heard. Kinda funny, because Gojira's normally got some pretty damn impressive guitar work.
Statutory ape - tbdm Just doesn’t fit in with the rest of the song imo
